CHAPTER XXIX: THE MORE THE MERRIER

LONG BEACH
PRIME
Sugar woke up to Colonel’s concerned, and Soto's grinning face. “Did we win?” Her HUD was blaring at her. “Stupid question, of course, we won, you two are...”
“Don’t say it.” Colonel tried to cut her off.
“...monsters.” She smiled at Colonel.
“She’s not wrong Battle, we are pretty badass.” Soto agreed offering her a hand.
The walls and cannons were slowly dissolving as all of the one-hundred-plus former homeless people were standing in a modified military formation. The Fort had started to break down as soon as the quest was complete.
She took the offered hand and was pulled up easily by Soto. “How long was I out?”
“Not long, I just canceled my Trade skills. We got our last quest in the dungeon, and it was to leave the dungeon.” Colonel answered looking back to the homeless formation with a little pride.
“Yeah, all of the loot globes disappeared, and loot was assigned to the ‘leave the Dungeon quest.’ It's bullshit if you ask me.” Soto complained.
“No one asked you,” Colonel said.
“It’s a figure of speech Jake, chill.” Soto snapped back.
Colonel ignored his friend. “We were waiting on you before we went over all of our prompts.”
“Wait, we were? I thought we weren’t leveling up until she woke up, I already went through mine.” Soto shrugged at Colonel’s glare.
“We agreed to wait, are you serious?”
“As a heart attack.” Was Soto’s smug response.
“Why are you so annoying sometimes?”
“It’s a New York thing.”
Sugar watched their back and forth with a growing smile on her face. “Boys.” She said shaking her head.
Soto stopped mid-sentence. “Anyway the homeless company already leveled their trades, and used their skill tomes, so they are ready. The exit of the Dungeon is the not ominous at all church.” He said sarcastically.
Sugar looked at the church covered in eerie shadows that sent shivers up her spine, but her Danger Sense wasn’t going off, so it was just creepy looking, she guessed. “Okay, so what now? Are we just going to leave? No more Ghouls trying to eat us?”
“For now darling,” Adia said startling the team as she just appeared next to Soto out of his shadow.
Soto jumped back a few meters back. “Don’t do that! I almost shit myself.” he squeaked.
“You are so cute when you are rattled.” She teased. “You sure you don’t want to join my harem?”
“Hey, I am not judging here, I’m from the Bronx, and I have had my fair share of trizzys, but, that was when I was in my late teens and early twenties girl. That’s a young man's game. I am a one-woman man now, and I can barely handle her so yeah no, I will have to decline your very generous offer.” Soto let her down.
She pouted cutely “What about you Sugar?”
“If I thought this was a game, I’d be all over that offer, you are absolutely gorgeous. But everything feels too real, and my ex-husband would kill me if I showed up after what, six months with a girlfriend. By the way, why am I so calm now? I should be freaking out.” Sugar said to the party.
“Short answer, it is the Mana. The more a player levels the less mental trauma affects them. Just like as you get older the better you are at handling new traumas.” Bour stepped up behind Colonel.
Soto jumped back again. “Where the hell are you two coming from?” Soto looked at Colonel “How can you be so calm?”
Colonel shrugged. “I have my mini-map open so I saw them coming.” He smirked. “Also I grew up in a place where people look out for each other not to take advantage of one another. ‘Trinidad and Tobago, everybody wants to go.’” He sang the last sentence.
“Asshole.”
“All this lore is fascinating, but we should really go over our prompts before I get a brain aneurysm from all of the flashing in my HUD.” Clyde looked at Soto, “And by we I mean Sugar and I.”
“Hey! I apologize for doing it earlier than you already.” Soto raised his hands in a placating motion.
“No, you didn’t.”
“I meant to, that should count.”
“Still haven’t.”
“Okay, okay, my bad Battle. Better?”
“You two are weird.” Sugar observed.
“That's fair.” Colonel agreed
“Hey, don’t agree for me. I am perfectly normal.” Soto complained.
“How do you guys go from monster-killing maniacs to babbling idiots so quickly?” Sugar asked chuckling.
“Practice.” They both said in unison, they paused and looked at each other, then fist-bumped.
Sugar groaned. “I really hope this is a game now, if I have to be stuck with you two for the rest of my life, I have a strange feeling it won’t be a long one. And if it is, my kid might actually like you.” She shook her head at the thought. “Oh, I hope my son doesn’t...” She paused as she thought about her son for the first time outside of her flashback.
“But it will be a lot of fun, I guarantee it.” Soto smiled a crooked grin, not seeing Sugar’s mood change.
“Sugar this is a game, we are not this lucky,” Colonel added.
“Facts.” Soto cosigned
“Oh it is real las, but it is also a game, and the players that treat it like a game tend to thrive much more than the people who dwell on it.” Bour chuckled.
Adia eyed Soto “If you think it's a game... why don’t you join me then?” Adia said in a sultry voice.
“You clearly haven’t dated a Puerto Rican woman,” Soto said as Colonel shook his head next to him.
“This is my first time on this planet, should I go get me one?”
“NO!” Colonel and Soto said in unison again, and then they chuckled.
“I’ll explain to her, you go through your prompts. Since Sugar started without you.” Soto pointed at the unfocused and open mouth of Sugar. "Also Jake put some pants on."
Clyde looked down at his mostly burnt pants. “Both of you are traitors, but Roger that,” Colonel said with narrowed eyes.
“You see they are fiercely loyal, futile, and fiery.” Soto started.
“I like fiery,” Adia said.
“Yeah, like burn your house down fiery...”
Clyde doesn’t hear any more as the prompts hit him like a flood.

“Clyde's mouth was wide open, and he was blinking like an idiot.” The narrator joked.
‘Holy shit.’ Colonel thought.
“Legendary was... well legendary after all. The set was perfect for a tank that couldn’t wear armor, and once he got the full set, he will also get a set bonus that will upgrade the entire set again. Be advised just because the clothing is self-cleaning and self-repairing doesn’t mean the player shouldn’t bathe.” The narrator extrapolated.
Colonel heard this and smiled. Every time he thought about the game being real, which he had to admit, it felt that way, he got something like this. He wasn’t that lucky in real life. He looked at the updates of the previous pieces seeing their upgrades.

They all had a self-cleaning function, and they had self-repair. Plus he could see what some of the Legendary mods were going to be. Those mods were probably going to be game-changers based on their names for sure. He shook his head at the powers at his command.
Next, he wanted to see his abilities and skills.

_____________________________________________________________
Again Colonel was convinced this was a game, these skill/spell upgrades were too good for the real world. His Ice Shard was much more deadly and cost almost nothing to cast. The Meteorite strike while still expensive, the base damage had doubled, and his Bulwark passive just made him much more of a tank. He was still susceptible to long-range fire, but his set piece prevented him from dying instantly at the very least. Plus he may get something cool for his Apprentice Effect when he specialized.
He shook his head at his growth, then he checked out his other Skills and abilities. Only one Skill had tiered up.

_____________________________________________________________
It was a little underwhelming, but the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. If people had limited skills, his teammates having access to his was like a free skill for them, so he wasn’t going to complain, plus he didn’t understand ‘the seeing through’ his teammates' part of the prompt. Also, the skill was pretty much second nature now, as much as any part of him as his sense of smell or sight.
_____________________________________________________________
< ABILITY TIER UP >
{+10 Intelligence, +5 Dexterity, +5 LUCK }
{Ability NAME: Legacy Perception(PASSIVE/TOGGLE/TRIGGERED)

_____________________________________________________________
Colonel whistled, “Wow, the Abilities apprentice bonus effects were...nuts.” Academically speaking they were outrageous. One allowed him to look forward in time, frankly an asinine power. The other made his targets easier to kill, and more importantly, him harder to kill. He was very happy with the stat increases as well, it was good getting them outside of the leveling up his class or profession. Which was something he had to look into now. Professions first, he looked at the player log and he had gotten seventeen Constitution, and that wasn’t it.

Colonel grabbed his head as it felt like his brain was on fire. The pain in his brain crippled him. The taste of copper in his mouth was familiar, he had bitten his tongue, again. Unfortunately for him that was keeping him conscious. So he screamed instead of passing out. He fell to his knees.
Soto appeared next to him in an instant, bow drawn and ready to defend his commanding officer. A strong hand touched his shoulder, and Bour was there shaking his head.
“It’s okay lad, he probably just Tiered up his Profession and got a bump to his Magic attribute. Even though he is strong he has still not specialized, so the second Tier always hits like a two-ton war hammer to the balls.”
Adia winced as if remembering her first time. “He will be fine in a few minutes, hopefully, most get a .2-.5 bump in magic depending on trades used and the environment you leveled them up in. I am guessing he got the maximum amount, Some never come back from having their brains develop so rapidly.” She said looking at the Colonel sadly. “Now, correct me if I’m wrong. Did you just describe the female Puerto Ricans? What about the male one?” She gave Soto a disarming smile.
He looked at Colonel grabbing his head and groaning on the ground, blood running from his mouth. “Uhh, well the young men want to be kings, but love being treated like babies by their queens, and the older men like to be left alone until it is time for sexy time... Are you sure he is going to be okay?” He asked again still concerned.
“Absolutely not. Is it weird that I am more turned on right now?” Adia said to Bour who rolled his eyes.
“Yes! Yes, it is.” Sugar said exasperated.
“What? Have you reconsidered joining my harem Sugar?” Adia teased.
“NO! No, I haven’t, especially after you said this game is real.” Sugar replied. “My son is as jealous if not more jealous than Puerto Rican women.”
“Cap!” Soto yelled behind a cough.
Sugar eyed him suspiciously.
“Oh I am not a jealous person,” Adia said, “you can bring your ex husband along if you like, the more the merrier.”
