CHAPTER III: SPECIALIZE

LONG BEACH
CLYDE & SPACE WRATH
Clyde ‘woke up’ a few minutes later to Space Wrath still chanting, and his insides feeling like they had been scrambled. He was still frozen in place, but for some reason, he could move his eyes. He blinked, then he did it again.
[Should I be doing something?] He asked.
Much to his surprise the LAW twitched and almost lost hold of the technique he was using. The Japanese man eyed the legacy suspiciously as he slowed down his casting. He was chanting as well so he couldn’t talk back. Or so Clyde thought.
[You shouldn’t be awake for this part, but if you have full access to your Character Sheet, you should Specialize while you wait, and level up until you have the stat requirements for the Space ascension if you want to.] The LAW said into his mind, but even in his mind he could hear the LAW struggling. It must be a very difficult casting to take up this amount of his concentration.
Clyde blinked again, and the LAW’s power faltered again, this time causing an even sharper pain within the Legacy’s soul. The LAW tried to reel in his power, but he was sweating profusely. He was taking huge breaths trying you get his breathing under control.
[Are you okay man?] Clyde asked concerned.
[No, I am not Cultivators at my level are beings of Essence so down here we lose our powers slowly a Dungeon speeds that up, but I do need to concentrate so do something about your class please.] The LAW’s stress was clear in their mental connection.
[And how do I do that pray-tell?] The legacy asked as another sharp pain hit his soul.
[Specialize!]
[Specialize?]
[Yes Gaia Damnit stop talking to me, do you understand if I mess this up I can kill you and cause your teammates irreparable damage to their builds since their builds are very dependent on your Title.] The LAW’s breathing stabilized as he slowed down the hand signs to get better control over the Technique.
[Okay] The LAW sounded frustrated. So Clyde decided it was time to see what the Specialist hype was all about. When Sugar had done it, she was a completely different person, and afterward, her mage version was more powerful and had a wider array of spells. The heal spell alone probably saved more lives than his actions, because she had healed all of the homeless people’s ailments and they had a plethora of them. If it was a leveling skill she would have gained a ton of levels in it.
He was stalling for some reason. Probably had to do with the pain in his literal soul. He needed a distraction from his pain. Fortunately, his HUD worked just fine through the pain, though it did flicker a few times ominously. Clyde shrugged at that, his father had told him a long time ago, ‘If you got no control, you have three options, seek control through the right channels, live under that control, or blow up what was trying to control you.’
The game was slowly pushing him to the last option. Things about the game were getting to him. It made him wary, not just the pain, but the fact that powerful people don’t have a need for the weak unlike on earth where the weak have power in numbers at least in a democracy. He could see a world of the powerful fully taking advantage of the weaker. That was why the Legacy didn’t want to complain anymore. He was strong and the strong’s duty was to protect the weak. ‘To do that I have to be stronger. Much stronger.’ He looked at the Space Wrath and smiled...well tried to smile his mouth didn’t even twitch.
The LAW’s eyes were closed, and his concentration was all on his task.
‘Maybe I should do the same.’ The Legacy closed his eyes and brought up his character sheet.

Clyde was impressed with his growth, there were a few new things he had to go over before he started. Namely his new Title, and Mark that came with it, and the skill store, and then he could specialize with all of that information. He wanted to start with the Title and Mark since they were connected, and he was familiar with titles, but not with marks.
He opened the Title to beautiful sounds of steel pan music.

< STEEL PAN MELODY >
{YOU HAVE EARNED A TITLE}
{TITLE NAME: Undead Bane(D)
TITLE TIER: Diamond(UPGRADABLE)
DESCRIPTION: Every beast and monster has a bane, it is what balances them. While beasts and monsters level up in unique ways, they all have a weakness that can be exploited once a player learns it. Because of the sheer amount of undead you are responsible for killing you have earned this Title.

Rare Bonus: Stat gain; +3 to Physical stats per level times T(Where T is Tier of the Player)
Platinum Bonus: EXP gain; 40% bonus EXP per tier from killing Undead.
Diamond Bonus: Living dead upgrade; 50% more damage to Living dead by association.}

< TOOL TIP >
{MARKS}
{Marks are a sign that a player is exceptional at something in the GREAT GAME. Marks come in all shapes and sizes, they usually give flat bonuses to the player based on the type of mark earned.}
_____________________________________________________________
{Mark Name: Undead Bane II
Mark Type: Bane Mark
Effect 1: Do true damage to Undead creatures bypassing any defensive power. (100 Undead over two tiers above you killed)
Effect 2: All damage against the undead is Critical Damage. All damage against Living Dead is Greatly increased. EXP bonus on killing undead (1000 Undead over two tiers above you killed.)
Effect 3: LOCKED(Kill 10000 undead at least a tier above you or 25000 total undead at your Tier or above. 5503/10000 a Tier above killed 5521/25000 any.)}
{For being the first to earn this mark you have been gifted 10 skill points.}
_____________________________________________________________
“Clyde loved this title and the mark, he was mad open about the amount of damage he would be able to do against the Undead and to a lesser extent Living Dead. He had to do a double take on the amount of Undead he had killed. He just didn’t remember even getting that many kill notifications. ‘It must be all the kills by our team or raid party. Speaking of which.’ He looked at his second Mark.
_____________________________________________________________
{Mark Name: Raid Boss III
Mark Type: Party Buff
Effect 1: Boost the damage of allies in the Raid party. Current damage. 30% to all, 300% to undead, 30% to living dead.
(For defending and defeating Undead monsters that out-tier you by at least two tiers.)
Effect 2: Raid party size increased; Your Raid party base size is determined by how many people you commanded the first time you formed a raid party. The base size of your Raid party is 250. Current size 2500.
(For protecting over 100 NPC in a hostile environment that should have caused an entire party wipe.)
Effect 3: Bonus Defense of all allies, armor, and structures. 30% to allies, 150% to armor, 90% to structures.
(For coordinating a defense and convincing a large group to defend your stronghold against creatures that out-tiered them by at least 3 tiers.)}
{For being the first to earn this mark you have been gifted +20 skill points.}
< NOTE >
{The next time you form a Raid party you will begin to earn Raid points(RPs) based on the enemies you defeat in battle. Enemies of your Tier and above give out proportional RPs while enemies below the player give out a single RP per kill. Undead enemies give out 300% more RPs because of the Undead Bane mark.}
_____________________________________________________________
The legacy was excited about this Mark, it wasn’t nearly as specific as the first one, but it also made his allies stronger. He also knew that large-scale battles were on the horizon. That was what the Colonel was known for in real life, so getting a chance to lead troops into massive battles came naturally to him. His heart started to race at the thought of victory over his vanquished enemies. He smiled...inwardly.
He looked down at the inside of his left forearm, which was very difficult since he couldn’t move his head, but there the two Marks were. The Undead Mark was a purple and black heart with two check marks on it, the heart slowly beat as he looked at it. The second Mark Raid Party looked like a coat of arms, in the middle was a tower shield with stylish gems embedded in it, to the left was a pair of crosswords, to the right was a compound bow, and on top of the shield was a wand and a staff tipped with pulsing energy.
‘Whoa, those are cool.’ He thought, he looked at the LAW who still had his eyes closed in concentration. He decided to keep going over his new stuff. ‘What’s next? Oh, right the skill store.’
With that thought alone a massive page opened up to the Legacy. On this page were bubbles with the names of skills on them. Each bubble had at least one line attached to another skill bubble. There was a fog of war-style clouds that covered a large majority of the skill bubbles on the page. The Colonel could even zoom out and see a spattering of other skills, but most of the page looked like a game map with only the major cities uncovered. He smiled, there had to be millions of options, it was the first time he was glad that he had limited Skill slots. Then he saw some of the names of the skills and internally smiled even bigger. He knew these Spells some were Sugar’s like Void Bolt and Summon Void Familiar, but some were the ghoul’s spells like Sprint, and Absorb undead, he even saw a section for Techniques, he was intrigued by the fact that he had anything in the section, but much to his surprise he had more techniques and their arts than all the other skills combined. He smiled at the future possibilities, but he was also confused as to why he had so many.
The next prompt gave him some answers. But also showed him that the name Legacy was not just for show.
_____________________________________________________________
< Skill Store >
{Welcome to the skill Store Legacy as it is your first time here you will be offered a quick overview. When most Players make it to Tier 2, they gain access to the skill store. The player can then use their saved-up Skill points to either level up a Skill, buy new skills, or purchase Perks. The skills available for purchase vary wildly per player, but because of your Legacy title you can learn anything with time, legacies have access to any skill they have seen performed(Access doesn’t mean mastery, however.). Be advised not all skills are compatible with human players.
(Your Legendary title bonus eliminates this advisory)
Because you are the first Legacy to choose the branching path the benefits of the skill store are two-fold.
1) All spell purchases will become G-Spells.
2) All skill costs are reduced.}
< skill Cost Breakdown >
{After the first purchase the amount doubles for every new skill in the same category.
First purchase cost on skills
SPELLS: 2.5 skill points per Rank of the spell. Spell Upgrade costs vary.
TRADES: 2.5 skill points for profession-specific Trades and 5 skill points for non-profession-specific Trades. Trade Upgrade costs vary.
SKILL TREES: 10 skill points per tier of Skill. 25 on Sub-Skills. Skill upgrade costs vary.
Techniques: 100 skill points per Technique. 50 points if placed directly into a CORE slot.}
_____________________________________________________________
‘Well, I won’t be buying any Techniques anytime soon I think wasting my limited resources on an unknown would be bad, and considering what I had to go through to get those points I think I’ll take advantage of my Spell upgrades since I can also turn those into Techniques eventually.’ Clyde thought. The list of Spells, Trades, and Skills all light up in different levels of light based on the legacy’s synergistic sight bonus.
He hadn’t looked at his Titles in a bit to catch up, he smiled because some were updated with new information marked by two Asterix.

‘Well, that is something special.’ Clyde was pumped to specialize now. The advancement in his personal power was exciting. He was going to tell the LAW, but when he looked at the man? God? No, he was a LAW which was a being above the gods. Clyde was looking forward to being as strong as them at some point, thinking about all the techniques he had access to. He looked at his level and free EXP.

_____________________________________________________________
‘Whoa’ is all the legacy could think of. These were just his Common through Rare Tier 2 Specializations. The stat gain was minimal compared to what he was getting from his titles, but every little bit counted. The names were simple, but the Specs were anything but. Tough fighter was in line with how he wanted to play for his team. Long Ranger at first seemed more like a Soto thing, but then he realized that his throwables were considered range weapons, all three spells would bring the pain from a distance. But Cannon Mage was simply superior for the style of game Clyde was expecting moving forward. The fort battle showed how a force of a few hundred with great equipment could take on thousands of monsters two to four tiers above them. That battle was intense, and the Colonel knew that was just a hasty defense. He thought that with time and preparation, they wouldn’t have even been infiltrated. But while Cannon Mage was the best option, the Forger thought that he could do that with his profession, he didn’t need his Class to do it. While the powers were different his profession Trade was more meant for permanent structures, and the Spec was more for a moving army, defense, and offense. The time to conjure also turned him off a lot, though as he leveled that would go down he hoped. It didn’t matter he wasn’t choosing a Basic Spec. ‘Ain’t nothing Basic about this guy.’ He looked at the more advanced options.

Clyde almost took Engineer and the Turret spell without thinking. He would be a beast on the battlefield with it. The only thing that stopped him was because the others had some serious pros. Sapper really made him a pyromaniac, both concussive and explosive bombs were super useful. But Minefield kind of turned him off it. It was the best skill, but the Colonel was not a wait for an enemy type of soldier, he was an ‘X gonna give it to you,’ type of soldier, so Sapper was out.
Magi-Brawler on the other hand was really cool. It would also help balance his stats. He saw his DEX was going to fall behind at some point, may as well get a jump on that. But what was the biggest seller of the spec was how deadly it was. One thing Clyde was worried about was armor-wearing humans since AR gave so much defense per point, but Penetration changed that. The big con was he simply couldn’t afford to be a single combat guy. So with the sad thought of being able to take on anyone one-on-one he decided that Magi-brawler was out.
Now back to Engineer, the wording in the breakdown was pretty cool after he reread it. “Mage side and real-world experience, giving a bonus to structures built.” That line stood out. The other two just had his classes, but this Spec was more specific to him personally, and it showed. He wanted all the spells. With his Mana pool, he could make a sixty thousand durability wall he wasn’t quite sure if that was a 1-1 ratio durability to hit points, but if it is that is an insane amount of HP. The bridge was not as useful, but there wasn’t a size limit which he was sure there would have been, but since it wasn’t in the breakdown it might be safe to say the size was big. Clyde had been stuck on the wrong side of the river many times in combat because of bad intel. ‘Sure that bridge in this war-torn country could hold a fully loaded seventy-five ton M1A1 tank, spoiler alert it couldn’t, not even for a few meters.’ Clyde remembered with an internal chuckle.
Turret though... that was the best spell he had read since entering the game. It was probably going to be his choice, it would be pretty hard to change his mind. That was when he looked at his Epic Specs and was ecstatic that he didn’t impulse buy Engineer.
‘W.T.F!’

Clyde was not sure what the quotes meant, but they were all super dope. Gladiator was perfect for his current build and allowed him to finish off enemies more easily. He was already tough to kill, with the Gladiator Spec he would also lean into his fighter side. There was something about specializing when you are in a team. Soto was the Ranger, and Sugar was the Mage, he could stay the fighter route, and the team would be set. Another thing that the Gladiator Spec did was give him much-needed Dexterity and the Strength was higher than any of the other Specs, it would balance out his character, well mostly his Constitution attribute was ridiculous.
The only reason why he didn’t pick it right away was twofold. One, he knew playing the pure fighter style would eventually get boring to him, and two, the words True Class seemed important. The War Specs had wording he just couldn’t ignore.

Yeah if that was not a big “pick this one” sign Clyde would have been blind to not see it. The Legacy thought about them both dropping Gladiator from his mind.
Warlock was absolutely a game-changer for him and his team. With time they could set up a trap-field, and lure their enemies into it. The Poison Bomb was just broken, being doubly effective against armor made it even more deadly, but having it airborne made it dangerous. If their eyes are burning and bleeding, they won’t be attacking his teammates and allies. He internally smiled. Summoning a pet was also a game changer for their team, the only thing that gave him pause was he just didn’t know what kind of pet he would get, but the Legacy was sure that whatever he summoned would be a combat multiplier.
The only problem with the Warlock Spec was that pesky little warning. No other prompt had warned him like that before and that was a little disconcerting. He had a ton of health compared to his starting point over ten times, and it still warned him. But he read it for what it was, once he cast the spell it would kill friend or foe. Clyde was too much of a student of history to not be aware of the dangers of chemical, or biological warfare. He would be making himself a walking weapon of mass destruction.
And a hypocrite.
Besides while it was a tier 5 True Class, which he didn’t know what that even meant, so much so he even tried to get more information on the True Class.

< TOOL-TIP >
{True Class paths are decided on at Tier 4, the prerequisites are given out, and if met, the ability to pick a True Class becomes available at the earliest Tier 5. Learn more at Class Tier 4.}
_____________________________________________________________
Not a ton of information, but enough to tell him that he had completed some special prerequisites to have tier 5 specs available for him at Tier 2. He was not entirely sure what it all meant, but what he did know was that seven was higher than five and Warlord+ was a Tier 7 True class. He logically assessed that he was getting a much higher tiered Spec so he really needed to look at the spec again.
The Warlord’s quote was very familiar to the old soldier in him, and it resonated with an ancient part of his mind. He was always a good soldier, but he was a better leader, when it came to taking land from an enemy of his country, the Colonel had led troops on massive operations and had never had an objective failure. Reading the Genghis Khan quote only made the fire in his heart burn with a fury that he didn’t even know he had in him.
The Spec started to glow brightly in his HUD being slowly activated by his synergistic sight. The two halo spells were glowing equally brightly, while the Bombardment spell was a dull grey.
The Legacy knew that the Bombardment spell was out for the same reason why he moved on from the whole Warlock Spec. He wanted power, yes, but not at the expense of losing control of the battlefield. If anything he wanted more control of the battlefield, and there were only three Specs that gave him more control of the battlefield, one from each section. Cannon Mage, Engineer, and Warlord+.
Clyde thought them over, first thing first he looked at the stats of all while to him it wasn’t as useful every bit still counted, they had a lead, and they had to push it. Cannon mage’s 6 Stats per level was welcomed, but 8 and the 12 for the other two made it hard to choose even if the potential was probably more varied. Cannon Mage was still in the race but it was falling a little behind.
The next thing he compared was the EXP needed to level it up. The higher rank Spec a player took, the more EXP it took to level up to the next tier, and if he knew games and fantasy stories well, that would be cumulative with successive tier-ups. If he needed so much more EXP to level, then he needed to fight higher and higher-tiered foes to level, it would be a grind one that the Colonel knew Soto and him were built for. But that made Cannon Mage more viable, because if he could get to Tier 3 in half the time he would get access to more spells, and whatever bonuses to specializing again.
But what Clyde was hyper-aware of was that getting EXP may not be a problem for him. He had bonuses on top of bonuses that gave him EXP bumps galore. But that benefited both specs differently. It meant if he went with the lower rank one, he might get two tiers out of one, but also if he went with the higher rank one, he might get more powerful options at his third specialization.
‘Ugh!’ It was all so frustrating, at the time, but that was life. Life is about making decisions in the present that will dictate, and impact your future options. We are always balancing on the sacrifice or survival scale. If you sacrifice your time, money, and relationships early in life you will find that survival is much easier later on in life. But if you are just surviving, and not sacrificing you will find that surviving is not living, it is a long slow road to mediocrity. A Legacy can’t afford to be mediocre, A leader can’t afford to be mediocre, and a Jacob can’t afford to be mediocre.
Cannon mage was out fully now. While it was cool and magical, it was not something worth giving up the stats and potential for it.
Engineer still had his favorite spell. Turret was a staple of shooters for decades. They varied wildly between games, but early game turrets were always unbalanced, and in late game, they were damage over time machines. Looking at the spec objectively though, he was pretty sure that his Profession could do everything that the spec could do in time. He would have to look for a personal Turret Trade skill.
Ultimately it came down to Clyde Sr’s old adage. “If you going to do something, do it right. If you are going to do it wrong at least know how to do it right first. Only do it wrong when you don’t have time to do it right. And there is always time to do the right thing.”
He was going to change the game world. He had a responsibility as a Legacy. He knew it in his bones, that he had to be strong to do that. This was his first Dungeon, and look at what he gained. A lot of it was luck, but he had a ton in the stats, so maybe that luck would keep on coming. EXP was not going to be a problem, he had a future Quest that he would have to complete and it involved forcing gods to ascend. He still didn’t know how he was meant to do that. But it made the quote of Warlord even more perfect.
”I am the judgment of the gods, if you weren’t sinners the gods would have never sent me.” The Legacy said in the silence of the Dungeon.
Just as the last words left his mouth, the LAW vomited blood and fell to his knee as he struggled to hold the spell together. His eyes started to bleed profusely, blood flooded out of his nose and trickled out of his ears. “Please tell me that your Bulwark spell didn’t Tier up in the middle of me pushing it to Expert. I just overshot.” The LAW forced out through bloody teeth.
“Oh shit you are right the skill quest was just to specialize...” Clyde spoke freely again.
“Did you just say the Warlord quote? That shouldn’t be available to you for sixty more levels...” He vomited again.
“Brother relax concentrate on the spell...” Pain cut off his words, and changed his body forever as a flash of soundless lighting hit him, and all he knew was black and two floating prompts.
