LONG BEACH

PRIME

“We got bigger problems, Colonel,” Soto said a little alarmed.

_____________________________________________________________

< MAP ALERT >

{Unknown hostiles of varying levels beyond your team’s capacity to fight have entered your team’s collective aggro zone. Good luck & DIE WELL!}

_____________________________________________________________

Colonel scoffed at the prompt, then looked at what Soto was talking about as the ground began to shake. He Analyzed the monstrosity with a frown.

_____________________________________________________________

< ANALYZE >

{Monster Name: Greater Ghoul(Undead)(Elite)(Floor boss)

Level:39

HP:560,000

MP:1,000

DR:300

Bane: Fire

Weaknesses: Light magic and Life magic.

Decapitation = True Death.

Description: Ghouls come in many varieties but the one constant between them all is the insatiable appetite for living flesh. Undead Ghouls' appetite is seconded by their strength and constitution. For their level, they will always be stronger and tougher than their frame suggests. Greater ghouls are as mindless as their feral kin, but they do not discriminate between living and dead flesh, adding undead mass to themselves making them more durable. At level 30 they gain +20 to strength and constitution. At their first specialization, they gain an additional Ability. At the second specialization they gain even more constitution depending on their mass. At their third and final specialization, they all become elites battling to become the floor boss absorbing the loser into their mass giving them a portion of the loser’s stats as well as a boost to their strength. Ghoul Elites have a permanent boost to HP (times 10) and damage(times 2). Ghoul Floor Boss have a boost to intelligence though it is mostly negated by their hunger.

EFFECTS: Insatiable Hunger. Undead dexterity, undead Regeneration, viral bite. Undead absorption}

“Well FUCK!” He shared the prompt with the team.

“Shit!” Sugar cursed.

“That’s much worse than I thought it was going to be,” Soto said dryly. ”On the bright side it's a floor boss, finally so hopefully...”

“You’re going to have to explain to me if we survive somehow, how that...” Sugar started, pointing at the massive fifteen-foot-tall behemoth of what could only be described as a walking chunky soup of fucking ghouls. She could see arms, legs, and even mouths trying to escape the turbulent mass of combined bodies, all the while screaming in agony, ecstasy, and abstract horror. “...is a bright side.” Sugar finished yelling.

“I have always been a glass-half-full kind of guy you know?” Soto states with a smile that doesn’t quite hit his eyes.

[Colonel I think you should go with siege weapons. I’ll start the Stronghold] He said on the command channel.

[Agreed. On it.] Colonel responded.

Colonel used his SYNERGISTIC SIGHT to see what kind of things he could build with his new profession skill. The glow was brightest around the flaming barrels and broken tents. His Find Weakness Skill quest updated by one and he smiled again. Then he frowned as more information was given to him, he learned the only option that was COMMON (IE he could make) was flaming pots, and they would require someone to operate. He mentally knew that any weapon he made would require an operator, that was why it was a non-combat trade type.

Colonel cursed his luck, but he didn’t have time to admonish himself. He looked at the homeless man Johnny and came up with an idea.

[What is up with the Stronghold Sergeant Major?] Colonel saw he had a new tab in his HUD.

A magical campfire blazed to life out of nowhere bathing the area with orange light and glowing brightly in Colonel’s sight powers.

Then the real magic happened. The skies above them opened up and let in sunlight for the first time. It was very defused, but it stood out in the darkness of the Dungeon. A wide shaft of defused light centered on their new stronghold like God sent it himself. It started to burn the ghouls hiding in the midst of the homeless and it wasn’t pretty. The ghouls’ skin started to flake quickly once they got closer to their CAMP causing them to stop right outside the walls or risk death.

The NPC all reacted differently. Some ran, some tried to climb the dangerous walls, but much to the team's surprise most of the NPCs fought back. With targets who were weakened by the sunlight and they felt emboldened by it, and some of them were more powerful than they looked.

Colonel used their distraction to see what they had gotten for building a Stronghold.

Johnny was wide-eyed and shocked at the prompts he was getting. Colonel’s HUD added a Party tab next to his Team tab. Johnny looked at Colonel with a mixture of awe, respect, and fear.

[Calm yourself, Johnny, I need you to identify all of the homeless people who are capable of fighting, former service members if possible. Make sure you trust them because we will be putting them to work on some brand-new weapon systems. Is that clear?] Colonel asked Johnny in party chat.

Colonel was taking a chance that the Army trouser Johnny was wearing wasn’t just for show. Colonel knew that a high percentage of homeless men on the streets of Los Angeles were veterans of forgotten wars. Most didn’t trust the Government enough and were too proud to seek the help they needed to get off of the street, or worse tried to get the help only to be denied because of red tape. Most civilians would never understand the frustration of going through pain both physically and mentally, building up the courage to go ask for help, only to be told that you are fine! We’re not fine! None of us are, particularly combat vets. But we will be as long as we are given the resources we require to get better.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

Colonel had volunteered at a ton of soup kitchens in his life and had many conversations with those very men, and some women, but it was overwhelmingly male, their stories broke his heart, as the proverbial we as citizens, had failed our veterans. But all of them, if push came to shove would gladly pick up arms, and defend their country again. Colonel could see it in Johnny’s eyes, he was a warrior.

When Johnny gave a slow nod, Colonel could tell that he was right about him.

[I can’t hear you trooper!] Colonel raised his voice.

[Sir! Yes Sir!] Johnny replied with a start. Then started to salute before catching himself, and put his hands to his side with determination written all over his face.

Colonel nodded his approval.

[Assign them as I build these weapons Sergeant Major] He said to Soto.

[Roger that sir!] Soto answered.

[I can give him a Job it's like a temporary class that only works in the AOI of the Stronghold. Guard Capitan, no he is too low of a tier for that Job, I can give him the Guard Corporal Job. I have a ton of information I got to go through, but we got to make decisions quickly.]

The ground shook again as another Greater Ghoul entered their eyeline. There were two reasons why they weren’t on top of them at this point, one was the overcast sunlight had pushed the darkness much further back, it was hazy, but still was an impediment to the horde of monsters' forward momentum. Two, was because the Greater Ghouls were eating the other ghouls with impunity on their way to their party, they were not in a hurry for some reason. But Prime team would take the extra time to prepare.

Colonel let his non-commission officer handle the newly drafted troops and incorporate them into the fort. He absently thought about how he would pay all of them, but then the Loot prompt reminded him that they were all in this together.

As the first group of homeless people made it to them, Johnny stood on top of the wall guiding them to one of the four gatehouses that Stronghold had made out of the walls Colonel had forged. He thought it looked super cool, but he still worried about how real this game could be. ‘I hope there aren’t any range ghouls because Johnny was an easy target up there.’ He thought.

“VOID BOLT!” Sugar killed a lesser ghoul among the group trying to infiltrate the fort. The ghoul’s head pops off as she hit it point blank in the neck. She quickly starts the chant for another spell. The words were lost to the non-casters of the group except for the last two words.

“ICE SHARD!” Another ghoul was slammed to the ground as a two-foot dagger of ice pinned it to there. Outside of the wall. It struggled to get up as the overcast sunlight started to burn its leaking blood. The poor creature screamed in pitiful agony

“VOID BOLT!” The struggling stopped when the black bolt demolished its head. Sugar coldly moved on.

“FIRE BOLT!” Sugar hit another, this time the ghoul's unnatural screams forced the remaining homeless to hustle inside even faster than before. Sugar’s staff glowed with pulsing energy.

Soto was giving out orders while Colonel was going through a ton of Mana with his new Trade. He pulls two flaming barrels into a crude Greek Fire weapon system with a magical twist. The wide-mouth clay pot with hand holds on each side sat on the ground about three and half feet tall.

Soto had them pick it up together as a crew of four homeless NPCs, and placed at all cardinal directions of the fort as they were made. Colonel’s head was swimming as he pushed his profession, the trade skills associated with it, his Mana, and concentration to its absolute limit. Every 20 seconds or so he would get an influx of Mana from his Disassemble skill that kept his speed of building moving. So much so that it had Tier up.

_____________________________________________________________

He was going to share the prompt with Soto, but his Sergeant Major was doing a great job organizing their new troops. This was the difference between Colonel and other players, while he found the gaming experience entertaining, he always took saving lives seriously, especially his battle buddy and his own lives. So Colonel kept making Greek Fire cannons not wanting to distract his focused Non-commissioned officer.

It took four men and one woman to crew the cannons each. But they had enough of them and some to spare now. After the first four, Colonel started to create another four to provide overlapping fire for the first four and to truly make their Stronghold a defensible position. Forty men and women all with the telltale signs of former service member status, manned the newly formed defensive structures. The wall expanded to accommodate them draining Colonel of even more Mana as it did. Between Disassemble and Kuma’s buff, and all his other effects, he wasn’t being drained too quickly. But it was still a losing battle with time. If they had started doing this earlier they would been in great shape. But if ifs were fish sushi would be on the menu tonight, and not his raid party.

Kuma sat by the fire leveling up and expanding her skill range and potency. The synergy between their team could even be seen in Colonel’s synergistic sight. It manifested as a see-through fog around the CAMP’s AOC. Colonel smiled as he got another prompt. His Battle log was off but he heard Soto and Sugar fight to keep the ghouls at bay as the crew members familiarized themselves with the weapon system. It wasn’t difficult the ghouls were vulnerable in the sunlight of the CAMP.

Colonel smiled. “Yes.” His eyes widened, and his brain felt ice cold as over ninety percent of his remaining Mana disappeared in an instant, he barely reacted still in combat mode, but it had hurt badly.

Objective 3: Save homeless 136/152 remaining

_____________________________________________________________

[Give me a head count Johnny.] Colonel ordered though his party tab was giving him a counter, but Johnny wasn’t adding everyone, only the veterans and competent people he knew personally could do the job needed of them.

[75 Sir, 40 on the weapon systems and 35 around the dog in the center, we are running out of room though.] He answered right away much to Colonel’s surprise and pleasure.

Colonel could see that, as the homeless on Soto’s side started to get to the wall some tried to climb over it, but they were crushed by their fleeing associates.

_____________________________________________________________

Objective 3: Save homeless 130/152 remaining

_____________________________________________________________

Six were quickly crushed against the spikes on the wall in the press of bodies before the chaos was under control. A homeless woman on the wall yelled at them to head to the gatehouse just a few meters away.

Colonel glanced at his map and saw that most of the homeless people were within view of the Camp walls. The others were either behind Bour and Adia or in the clutches of the ghouls themselves. He had a decision to make, a hard one. Does he try to save the rest, or start their defense in earnest? It was a thin line between righteous savior, and thoughtless monster in battle. But protecting the majority of innocence by sacrificing the mostly doom ones never sat right with a leader, even when they knew it was the absolute right decision.

His FIND WEAKNESS skill pinged two lesser ghouls that had infiltrated Soto’s side of the fort. They were both going after Sugar. Every gamer knew that you go after the mage, or healer first, and Sugar was both on his team.

[Sugar watch your back.] Colonel said calmly in team speak at her

To Sugar’s credit, she reacted instantly. Spinning around her black halo and staff glowing red in Colonel’s Trade SIGHT as she unleashed a tennis ball-sized bolt of fire. Eliciting a scream of agony from the closest lesser ghoul. The crowd of homeless were blessedly frozen in shock so they didn’t move, allowing her to see that the second one had leaped at her, she stumbled back in panic.

“RALLY HERE!” Colonel yelled as Sugar appeared still stumbling at his former location, and Colonel was the one standing in front of the leaping ghoul. He smirked. “Man, your ugly.” Colonel snarled at it as he axe kicked the confused ghoul crushing its head into the floor, a second stomp and a loot orb started to form, the ghoul having expired.

[Thanks for the save boss. That was hella close.] She said with an exhausted smile. “That even leveled up my danger sense.” She chuckled.

_____________________________________________________________

< SKILL QUEST UPDATE >

{Find weakness is now Novice 9}

{Skill quest: Find a weakness in 100 different creatures(20/100)}

_____________________________________________________________

[Duck!] Colonel ordered looking at her, dismissing the prompt. They were see-through, but still distracting.

Sugar compiled immediately which saved her life, again, as another Lesser ghoul tried to grab her from behind. Apparently, they weren’t trying to just take out mage they were trying to wreak havoc in the fort. Colonel wasn’t having it.

“Quick Step!” He used his boot mod for the first time and experienced something very different from the teleportation of Rally here.

Eighty of his slowly recovering Mana points were used making his aching brain burn again, and while he was mentally fatigued, everything slowed down, sound disappeared as his body began to move involuntarily forward in a blur of the surroundings. He had cleared the 20-meter distance between the Ghoul and himself in one step.

The shocked look on the Ghoul’s face was priceless before Colonel used his momentum, and over one hundred in Strength and dexterity to rip its head off. A few sprinkles of black corrosive blood splattered on his already ruined top burning the rest of it away. He just ripped off the scraps leaving him shirtless, in barely held together trousers, his gloves and boots, the latter two he had made invisible so he just looked like a barefoot, shirtless homeless veteran, fitting right in actually. Thankfully his constitution was already high enough to overcome the cold weather of the day cycle in the Dungeon night. He felt like he was on a leisurely albeit chilly morning stroll.

A wild eye Sugar looked back at his brutality with horror and a little admiration. “You are...”

“Don’t say it.”

“...a monster Colonel.” She smirked “ I mean that in the best of ways.

“Back to your post Sugar.” Colonel ordered.

She gave a quick jaunty salute, and ran back to the west wall. “Aye, Aye Colonel!”

Colonel didn’t correct her poor battlefield etiquette, she was a civilian after all, beside he wanted people to attack him. He concentrated on his map again looking for red dots near him and his party. He sighed with relief when there weren’t any more.

Kuma was really useful Colonel’s mana was slowly ticking up before his eyes because of her times twenty buff. It wasn’t quite enough for him to keep spamming his active bonus effect and item Mods. But more than enough that they don’t cripple him mentally, he thought as the Mana headache subsided and he could finally relax.

Then Colonel looked up at the now three Greater ghouls who had been idle for a second eating its lessers, but now they were racing towards the fort crushing the lessers and remaining homeless in their wake. The sunlight didn’t seem to have any effect on them.

Colonel knew they were out of time he didn’t want to look at the quest update to see the lives lost. It was more important to defend what they could.

[Open fire, fire at will try and avoid civilians if possible.] He ordered in party chat. He made sure the order came from him, so if civilians died the blame would fall on him. Leadership is about being clear about the task, but more importantly, simplifying it for your subordinates in order for them to be successful.

He analyzed the Greek fire weapons which had upgraded while he was busy saving Sugar.

_____________________________________________________________

Colonel was smiling as his party members started to open fire with fire on the closest lesser ghouls burning them to ash in seconds. This same scenario was playing out from every side of the walls as the ghouls were now closing in.

Some lesser ghoul who were hidden within the homeless crowd ran for their unlife before being cut down in a spray of orange flame.

Colonel’s senses were on high alert as he scanned the battlefield. Something was off he could feel it. Things were going too well. The greater ghouls had stopped right outside of the range of the Greek fire. Their main eyes filled with more intelligence than Clyde thought they should have for mindless killers.

He looked at his map the light green dots were no longer holding back the flood of red dots. Every red dot was heading their way, but most stopped right next to Greater Ghouls which made Colonel even more suspicious. ‘Something is wrong.’ He thought. Then he got another prompt that pushed itself into his mind's eye.

“Time slowed as Colonel’s perception’s novice bonus activated. He doesn’t even have time to celebrate his tier up and level up in his abilities as a timer starts to tick down from eighteen seconds.” The narrator started darkly. “Colonel much to his horror is unfortunately affected by the time slowing down, though the knowledge that it is slowed was enough to take advantage of what was going on.”

“He moved like molasses as he turned his head, first to Soto who was mid-arrow shot, a black mana arrow leaving his bowstring, with a shit-eating grin on his face. Colonel doesn’t see any hostiles around him, even though the press of bodies was more of a hindrance to his vision that he had stupidly not taken into account when he had brought them ALL into the fort.”

Colonel ignored his narrator, though he did agree with it, unfortunately. He turned in Sugar’s direction while bending his knees, grabbing a few loose rocks from the ground, and jumping in the air to get a better vantage point. The slowed time helped him think while his mind was racing.

He saw Sugar’s staff glowing red with fire as she shot it at a too-close ghoul. Colonel could see she was going to hit it since it was just about to attack her instead of another fleeing homeless person.

Colonel relaxed until his eyes snapped to the center of his fort. Even before his head could turn, he saw a beautiful petite Mexican woman, with hard light brown eyes, a round face, highlighted by high cheekbones, and a focused look, lifting her leg up.

What set off alarm bells in his mind was that in his TRADE SIGHT, she glowed purple. Not knowing what Mana type that is was irrelevant, he just knew they had been played. Her focused look was broken as if she felt his gaze, she slowly looked up at him as a vicious smile grew on her face. Then she slammed her foot down on Chibi Kuma’s oversize head.

“NO!” Colonel screamed as time went back to normal with his words. But it was too late.
