NIGHTINGDALE

CLYDE

Clyde was so caught up in the cutscene for the game, that he had forgotten he was in a game, and back home his best friend was probably not doing so well. It sobered his excitement a little.

“How much time do we have? Also, what should I call you?” The black Japanese LAW was not cutting it in his mind anymore. He talked to the back of the LAW’s head as the LAW looked at the battle he had just told Colonel not to look at. Colonel rolled his eyes.

The LAW grumbled. Then visibly calmed himself at being interrupted. He turned to Colonel obviously struggling with the anticipation of wanting to see the intense fight.

“I am Space Ascendent LAW one, The Commandment of Wrath, you may call me Space Wrath if you like, it is my element, realm, and rank. It is truly a pleasure to meet you Legacy. Now finish what you have to do, we will have time for more introductions later, maybe.” The LAW said hurriedly, but respectfully, and not very confident.

“It is great to meet you as well Space Wrath, I am Clyde Jacob Junior, but most people call me Colonel, the pleasure is all mine.” Clyde reverted back to his West Indian etiquette training.

The LAW deadpanned and stared at him. ”You think I don’t know who you are after coming all this way to save you?”

“Um, I don’t know how far we are. Also, I was being polite.”

“You know what would be more polite? You doing what I just told you, to do.”

“Uhhh...” Clyde didn’t know how to react to the statement or the back and forth, then he realized he was in a game. Why would he let this person talk to him like that? Even in real life he never did.

“Okay,” Colonel said losing the will to fight just as quickly as it came, purely because the LAW was right, and Colonel needed to clear all of his prompts, and get his head in the game, and out of the clouds...the nebulae?

“First things first.” He spoke out loud to focus even more. “Let's look at the rest of my title upgrades.” He remembered where he was in the process before being teleported here. He absently wondered if this was technically his first time being kidnapped.

As the new knowledge flooded into his brain he assessed it. He had just gotten the title, and it upgraded right away. His eyes bulge. “Thirty-six attributes per level from just this title alone. Okay, I like it already.” He saw why it was called legendary.

He didn’t like the fact that the EPIC bonus was locked until his 2nd specialization, he hadn’t even gotten to his first yet, but according to his Tool-Tip, he just needed to level up to twenty. He had no idea how difficult that may be, but he will get there with the help of Soto.

_____________________________________________________________

The first thing he noticed was the wording change on his bonus effects. Slight to Minor felt like a significant difference, but he wouldn’t figure it out until he fought again. Twelve more attributes per level, Colonel was being built as a defensive specialist, and this was in line with what he wanted to be... who he wanted to be, so he was going to embrace it.

Now he had to just level to gain the benefits of all of his Titles. He looked at his new Soul Bound title.

_____________________________________________________________

{YOU HAVE GAINED A TITLE}

{WORLD FIRST UPGRADE}

PLATINUM BONUS: Locksmith.

DIAMOND BONUS: LOCKED}

_____________________________________________________________

The title was pretty underwhelming considering its Tier, but he will keep his judgment again until he specialized, twice apparently, after seeing the other world's first bonuses he was excited for it to be honest.

He read the tool tips hoping for more.

_____________________________________________________________

< TOOL TIP >

{WORLD FIRST BONUS: LOCKED both soul Brothers must specialize at least twice each.}

{RARE BONUS: Utility Bonus; Extended range

{PLATINUM BONUS: Defensive Bonus; Locksmith

Having a soul bounded friend means you will never die in chains or behind bars...unless your together.}

{DIAMOND BONUS: LOCKED}

_____________________________________________________________

‘Okay still pretty underwhelming. But that seems to be all I can do for now. He thought the Platinum Bonus was cool but he and Soto were almost always together while playing games. So it wasn’t as useful as it should be, but you never know. “Let me see what my character sheet looks like now.” It had changed a little.

_____________________________________________________________

As soon as he finished looking at his character sheet he looked back up at the fight going on. He smiled at how streamlined it had become. He didn’t know that most players’ character sheets adjusted to the player's individual preferences over time.

Another arrow obliterated a new planet from deep space. Before she died the Neptune-like planet cursed the Titan’s tactics.

“Show yourself you cowardly bitch.” These were the last words she said before dying the final death.

“Oh, are we done playing?” The playful voice of the Titan asked. Even though her voice was heard she still couldn’t be seen.

Clyde looked back at the Dragon fighting the red planet, and Ala. He seemed to have them on the ropes.

The black burn scars on Ala’s moon were still glowing hot as terrestrial style moon stayed away from the dragon’s attacks behind her mother’s defenses.

Their fleets weren't idle. The red planet fleets shot divine Tier Techniques at the dragon who easily dodged them with a grace that belied his size.

“You are down to about half your number,” The dragon began talking calmly while deflecting attacks from both planets, “and your attacks are no longer effective against us, let alone our Dark elf compatriot. The battle is lost, save the lives of your creations at the very least, since you clearly don’t care about each other’s lives.” He said breathing out smoke tired of the whole ordeal.

“Olorun, what is taking so long?” Ala ignored the dragon and yelled at the large dreadnought leading one of her fleets.

In response, a deep, calming, almost grandfatherly voice was heard for the first time, and Colonel noticed the LAW flinch at it.

“All is prepared, worry not my love.” Olorun stood on the deck of his Dreadnought. A tall, dark skin, black man with a clean bald head, that shined from the exchange of powers in the space around him. He paid the light show no mind at all focused on his task.

He was dressed in all-black almost liquid armor outside of his white halo helmet he held under his left arm.

His eyes were filled with galaxies as he had no sclera. He looked at his HUD, the calculations happening so quickly now he couldn’t tell if he always knew the location, or did he just worked out the complex spacial coordinates, and matrices in an instant, either way, his job was done.

He looked up to a massive arrow flying at him and he calmly dawned his helmet while saying a word of power.

“LEFT!”

The arrow curved slightly to the right of Olorun’s ship just as his ship moved to the left.

The Elder race battle came to a screeching halt.

All eyes were on the little dreadnought that just did the impossible. Well, all eyes but the Planet he was protecting. She knew what he was capable of. She took the time to tidal lock her moon to herself so they could escape when the time was right.

Clyde could swear he could hear the LAW’s jaw hit the floor...space?

The LAW in question turned and looked at Colonel with an unreadable expression. Something akin to foreboding. He didn’t like the look. As a former leader of troops, he identified the look as FUBAR!

“I have racked up a massive debt with you for seeing this.” The LAW slowly said in the silence of the moment. “This moment of silence lasted three days according to legend, but time is relative to immortals. The days may feel like a blink of an eye.”

They looked back at the frozen scene, wait, not completely frozen.

Olorun’s white halo helmet was turning black slowly. Starting at the neck, the darkness leisurely crept up the faceplate.

“If we were back on Gaia my cultivation would be crippled because of the debt, if I didn’t give you a quest. But since we are not, I have some flexibility.” Space Wrath said getting Colonel’s attention again.

“What do you mean flexibility?” That was code for being ready for shit to hit the fan in the Army.

He smiled. “It means that I can give you advice instead of quest. Believe me, you want my advice, a quest would be good I guess, but you are on a pretty good one already I don’t want...” He paused. “My boss to know that we were here, so I’d rather not give you a quest. She would know right away as soon as we got back.”

“Okay, what advice do you have for me?” Clyde was just happy to be productive.

“When we get back, you do remember the scenario you were in prior to coming here, right?” The LAW asked.

“Yes, I was on my way to save Soto’s absentminded ass,” Colonel responded.

“Good, very good, you will be brought back to that exact place so be ready.” The LAW’s eyes were unfocused. “Okay, that didn’t lower my debt to you at all.” He said disappointed. He sighed which Colonel found amusing since they were in the vacuum of space.

“Okay,” Colonel paused, “Thanks for the advice, I guess,” Colonel said a little confused

The LAW’s shoulders slump. “I will have to give you a quest it looks like.” He started before suddenly stopping. “Wait,”

The LAW’s third eye opens and nine gold-black concentric rings in all of his eyes light up then looks directly at Colonel floating in space.

The action sent a shiver up Colonel’s spine like someone was peering into his soul.

The reality was not that far off actually. The LAW used a Technique to look at Legacy’s Character Sheet. The sheer difference in power level made it child’s play to read Colonel like a pamphlet, though there are always things that couldn’t be seen, someone with his experience could just read between the lines on those.

“Oh level 1 only, that's good your journey has just started. No profession? Right, you're not supposed to get one until level ten, I haven’t been that low for millions of years I almost forgot. Your attributes are a lot higher than any base specialized fighter of a level ten times higher than you.” He said to himself still reading Colonel like a children’s book, out loud. “More like two tiers actually. Your magic stat is ridiculous even for a tier-4 player. A tier 5 would own you even if you out-stat them, but I can’t wait for you to get to that tier.”

Clyde was a little curious about his capabilities against other sapients. But that was mostly academic. He was a Player versus Environment type of gamer, and Soto was the PVP guy.

“Your Titles are also quite outrageous. Do you have any idea how lucky you are to be thrown into an Open-Rouge Dungeon as your tutorial? Do you even know how rare Open-Rouge Dungeons are?” The LAW’s eyes widen as he gets a new prompt. “Oh, you weren’t even aware you were in a Dungeon... Ahh, I see... you were teleported in. That actually understandable, Open-Rouge Dungeon’s first floor and display the local time on your HUD until you defeat the boss, and or move on to the second floor.”

He looked at Colonel like he was a fine cut of grade A, Wagyu beef.

“You don’t say.” Colonel gave the universal ‘get to the point.’ look.

“I have never heard of the Forger title lean into that when you can, if I haven’t heard of it is probably powerful. For now, use your upgrade bonus effect on something on your character sheet. I won’t tell you what you should upgrade though.” He looked Colonel in the eyes and held them there with a stare. “A person's build is a very personal thing, especially when one becomes a Cultivator. I won’t infringe on your build, you are also a Legacy so your build will always be different than regular players. It is a blessing and a curse.”

“Can I ask what that difference is?” Clyde was really surprised that the game was this in-depth, he had almost forgotten he was in a game.

“I can’t answer that. Even out here, I am still bound by VOWs and Oaths of the Game.” He frowned, “I can however tell you that getting stronger, taking chances, and trying new things will benefit Legacies, and their teammates more than regular players. For instance, it is easier for Legacies to get Titles and skills. You still have the same cap as all other players, but most players don’t ever fill up their skills slots, let alone their title slots in their lifetime. You would want to do that before you reach the Sky realm-” He suddenly stopped. “Oh, debt paid.” He makes a ‘my lips are sealed’ gesture.

“Okay...” Clyde said.

“Okay.” The LAW replied curtly.

“So I should upgrade something?”

The LAW nodded

“Okay, then let's see what this UPGRADE is all about,” Colonel said thinking of the bonus.

_____________________________________________________________

{DIAMOND BONUS: Utility Bonus; Upgrade:

Twice a tier the Player can upgrade a skill, an ability, a class, a bonus, a Mod, an item, a building, or a CORE with a +. The + adds a random positive up to Diamond bonus effect to what is upgraded.

Upgrades available: 2}

_____________________________________________________________

There was a light glow on the words ‘a skill’ and a brighter glow on ‘a bonus’

Colonel instinctually knew that this was his synergistic sight telling him what may be best to upgrade. But he didn’t know the meaning of the brightness. The easy assumption was the brighter it was, the more it needed to be done.

With that decision made, Colonel looked through all of his bonuses he had a lot. All in all, he has six titles with at least three bonuses each. Only two bonuses glowed though, and he wasn’t sure why, they were both so different. He read through them for understanding.

_____________________________________________________________

{PLATINUM BONUS: Defensive; Rally here: Any ally within 4m per PL(Where PL is Power level the combined level of all paths)can request your help, and you will either be transported to them, or swap places with requester. Damage must overcome your DR before it can do damage to either of the players involved, and will reverse damage on player saved transferring that damage to you. Can be triggered per target once every 4 minutes. The base range doubles every Class level. This bonus cool down is reduced every tier.

DIAMOND BONUS: Glimpse; 50% chance to see through subterfuge.}

_____________________________________________________________

Both glowed equally bright, and Colonel didn’t know what to think. He looked at his skills list to see which skills were glowing, but there was only one.

_____________________________________________________________

{SKILL NAME: Defensive Stance(U/D)(PASSIVE/Stacking)

SKILL LEVEL: Novice 0

DESCRIPTION: A Stance is a path of its own. Defensive stance is the protector’s stance. The player temporarily sacrifices immediate mobility for increased defense. As long as you are in a 1 meter plus T(Where T is Tier; Min Tier 1) area of where you are currently standing. When defending, your health pool will continue to get bigger over time, making the player harder to kill the longer you fight goes on without them moving away from their original location. When the player moves from the location all of the gained HP is removed.

SKILL EFFECT: The player gains +1 Constitution per skill level per second while defending in 1 meter area.

Current CON gain:11 per second

STUDENT EFFECT: Pools Regeneration increases over time. Effect based on skill level.

NOVICE EFFECT: The extra HP slowly falls off instead of it all being removed at once. As long as the player is in a 1 meter area of teammates the stacking effect continues.}

_____________________________________________________________

Well, that made that decision easy. This was hands down his best skill so far and was in line with his playing style. “UPGRADE Defensive Stance skill.“ He said out loud.

“Huh?” The LAW said his mind preoccupied with the elder races silently looking at each other.

_____________________________________________________________

< ALERT >

{Would you like to upgrade Defensive Stance skill? You will lose access to this Skill for 48 hours.}

“Yes,” Colonel said, and then the last two words registered. “NO!”

< ALERT >

{General Skill Upgrade activated and is now upgrading

_____________________________________________________________

“AH fuck me!” Colonel yelled as all of the information from his Stance skill disappeared from his mind with a violent pop in his head.

The LAW’s eyes widen in understanding. “Oh, that's going to make things...difficult.”

“Who you telling? That is my go-to skill. Now I have to survive two days without it.” Colonel said sadly.

“You are thinking past the attacking specialized Feral Ghoul, that is good, it means that you have the confidence that you can survive them without this skill.” The LAW tried to encourage.

“Ugh, I forgot I have a brain-hungry clingy girl to get off of Soto as soon as I get back.” The Legacy said while rolling his eyes.

“Yes, that is exactly what you will be doing. A Stance is a very rare general skill only Capper Classers, Artist rank Professionals and Grand Master Skillers get access to one if they even have a slot available for it. So the fact you got it this early in your character build was unheard of in my day. Breakings are not normal, however, so you will definitely benefit from upgrading it. I would not worry about the time too much, Dungeon time is... weird.” Space Wrath said.

“It's all good, what is done is done. We can’t dwell on the past.” Colonel shrugged.

The LAW spreads his arms wide showing the still quiet, and frozen scene in front of them. “Behold the past. This is what happens when you dwell on it too much. Besides, when I said time is weird in Dungeons, I wasn’t kidding they are their own worlds, especially rogue and wild ones.” He continued to educate.

“What do you mean weird?” Colonel asked.

“As in it is inaccurate at best, misleading at worst. Open Dungeons are meant for any amount of groups to enter at the same time. The amount of creatures is always higher in this type of Dungeon. The only Dungeons that have more mobs than Open Dungeons, are Closed War Mode Dungeons, but they are even more rare and are just Epic battles on humongous scales.” The LAW answered.

Clydethought over what he just heard.

He was trying to figure out if he understood half of what he was being told. The good news was with the higher intelligence he had gained, he felt like he could at least remember all of what was said, so he could tell Soto.

Soto was just better at explaining game mechanics, and Colonel knew this information would make him drool.

“You should continue.” The LAW stated to Clyde as he was clearing thinking.

“Yeah, You are of course right, the things I can control first,” Clyde said.

He looked back at his Character Sheet and at the Bonus effects again. There was a third lighter glow over the Upgrade bonus now. ‘That seems like a good idea.’ He mused. ‘But the glow was not as bright as the others.’ He read it again.

_____________________________________________________________

{DIAMOND BONUS: Utility Bonus; Upgrade:

Twice a tier the Player can upgrade a skill, an ability, a class, a bonus, a Mod, an item, a building, or a CORE with a +. The + adds a random positive diamond bonus affect to what is upgraded.

Upgrades available: 1}

_____________________________________________________________

It was clearly a long-game decision. He knew that he should play for the long game, but he felt he had done that already by giving up his Stance skill for a few days.

He inwardly groaned at the thought of fighting without the admittedly cheat of a skill. He shook his head, it had to be one of the bonuses, ‘wait I can upgrade an item?”

Colonel opened his soul storage, before realizing that he was wearing the only item he had received since entering the game.

_____________________________________________________________

< ITEM >

{ITEM NAME: Legacy gloves

Because of your retired war veteran title, your equipment is unreadable by platinum, and below identification skills, abilities, or items.}

_____________________________________________________________

They also had a slight glow to it. Colonel didn’t know what upgrading a legendary piece of gear would do to it, and he wasn’t in the mood to find out. He looked at his current outfit, but when he identified them not only were they trash tier gear their durability was actually degrading over time, he needed to get new clothing soon, or he would be wearing just underwear soon.

His mind and eyes went back to the bonus effects. “So we are caught between upgrading our bonus to see through subterfuge, or our Rally here bonus which is what got us here in the first place.”

As much as this entire experience had been fresh and new, Colonel could see the benefit of Glimpse instantly.

Seeing through more than fifty percent of subterfuge was incredibly that was very appealing. On the other hand, he couldn’t see how Rally here could be upgraded, maybe more range, but nothing else that jumped out at him.

That alone helped him make the decision. The fact that he could not wrap his mind around how Rally Here would be upgraded ultimately left him with one real choice for this tier.

“Upgrade title Bonus Glimpse.” He said with confidence that it was the right choice.

_____________________________________________________________

< ALERT >

{Would you like to upgrade Retired War Veteran+ Diamond bonus Glimpse? You will lose access to this Bonus for 24 hours.}

“Yes,” Colonel said after reading the alert a little slower this time.

_____________________________________________________________

The bonus didn’t hurt as bad as the Stance. “Not bad only one day of being blind in a Dungeon...” Clyde's thoughts came to a screeching halt.

He looked at the LAW with an intense stare. The LAW exchanged a look of surprise as he got a pop-up. “Holy Gaia you are the worst, how is this my fault?” He said to the heavens.

Which was just weird in space.

Colonel shook off the thought and the mad ramblings of the LAW and spoke. “You said we were lucky to be put in a Dungeon or something along those lines right?”

“Yes.” The LAW answered

“Why?”

“Why, what?”

“Why were we lucky, isn't this a tutorial quest?” Colonel asked.

The LAW opened his mouth before shutting it quickly. His eyes narrow at the Legacy in front of him. He reassessed him for a few seconds. He turned and looked back at the paused battle, it was about to ramp up again in a few beats, and he felt it since time was moving by fast.

“The GREAT GAME is... complicated. Each player is supposed to make their own way through, but at the same time getting to higher tiers is impossible without a team or allies.” Space Wrath started slowly.

“Most don’t learn this until much later in their gaming experience. By then, however, they have burnt whatever bridges they had needed to get stronger. Those people don’t have what it takes to get to the higher tiers, and most certainly don’t have what it takes to be an Adventurer.” He paused.

“Adventurers are crucial to the survival of sapient races on their celestial body. The primary mission of all adventurers is the clearing of Dungeons that are too strong for the local area. Baring that, helping with monster and beast swarms and hordes if the Dungeons can’t be cleared in time.”

“One must be a hero in order to be an adventurer. Caring is more important than power. However if you can become one, power is what you will want to seek. If you can survive.”

He paused, and Colonel let it all sink in. The game was giving him a lot of little cool nuggets and he was going to enjoy them.

“So I want to be an Adventurer?” Colonel asked

“Wanting to be one is futile, adventurers are selected not created. One must be invited to become an adventurer. I, am officially inviting you to become an adventurer. Do you accept this great responsibility? Before you do, I will have to tell you adventurers have short lives, compared to their pairs. They answer the call. But most don’t live past seven hundred.” The LAW finished.

“Is that on average, or a hard cap?”

“A bit of both actually. But mostly because at seven hundred years most magic eras die. That is because it takes seven hundred years for all of the non-cleared legendary Dungeons to release their hordes. Legendary Eras are the toughest times for players. Most civilizations don’t make it through those walking powerhouses clawing out of the ocean or unexploded regions of the surface. It is always a worldwide event. The LAWs clean up afterwards and reset the world with the help of the remaining Adventurers and gods. Only to do it again in a few centuries. This is the cycle of Mana. It rises and falls, until the planet becomes RUNIC, or...”

“A breaking?” Colonel finished the sentence.

“Precisely. A breaking, and now you know how the first breaking happened.” He turned and looked back to the battle. “Now let us watch the conclusion of this battle, and see if we can gain some enlightenment.” He said sagely while transitioning to the lotus position.

Clyde didn’t like being dismissed but also wanted to watch the rest of the cutscene. He blinked, “Am I a member of the Adventurers Guild now?”

The LAW turned his head to look at him. “No, you must be invited by three active members or five former members. Two officers can also invite you, but those roaming monsters are usually too busy clearing powerful legendary+ Dungeons all over the multiverse. Now hush and watch.” He finished with a tone that left no room for argument.

“Colonel was again not happy about being treated like a child, but he realized that The GREAT GAME wasn’t just his planet, but what might be a plethora of new, and exotic planets throughout a multiverse.” The narrator said in his mind.

Clyde smiled, he couldn’t wait to tell Soto about this, he was going to trip out.
