Chapter 30: The Following Day

030 - The Following Day

Waking up on top of my hugging pillow, I enjoyed the desperate expression of my cute servant that wanted to get up before me for a while, then stood up and dressed myself.

I had much to do today.

First I made my way to the classroom, sending Ann to get her some breakfast and some apples for myself.

After I entered the usual room, I noticed I just had barged in to the lesson.

A young skinny guy without student uniform stopped from walking up and down in front of the class, making a really angry expression and glaring my way.

He should be my history teacher, as far as the timetable goes.

Well, I should probably wait with my stuff until the end of the lesson, or else things could get annoying.

“Young Miss!”

...too late. Might as well make him even more angry now.

I lazily turned back to him, as I had been on my way to the back of the class, and answered with a questioning:

“Hmm?”

Enraged his head turned red, and his voice increased in volume.

“Young Miss, how dare you be that disrespectful towards a teacher, especially when you are late! You will ask the others to tell you what you have missed, and I will ask you next week! If you don’t know EVERYTHING, you’ll have some lessons on the weekend!”

“But I already know everything.” I refuted. “And there’s no way I’m coming on the weekend, I’ve got things to do. And besides, I’m just here to get the curriculum and maybe agree on a test for the whole thing, so I don’t have to come anymore.”

“You can have the test right now, if you think you know everything! If you fail, prepare for some heavy punishment. You still can back out now.”

Having already arrived at my seat, instead of sitting down normally I dragged the chair to the path between the tables and sat down there, challenging him with a mocking smile: “Come on, start asking.”

And so it started, the EPIC RAP BATTLE OF HISTORY!!!!!....*cough*

Being asked so many questions one after the other, with him always nearly shouting and always talking very fast, I should have felt very stressed, but to counteract that and to annoy him I spoke deliberately slow, and always took my time to think about the answer for his questions.

Against my expectations though, the more I answered correctly, the less he was angry with me, rather looking at me with some respect, toning down his voice to normal levels and not even reacting when Ann arrived and brought me three apples that I then ate during his questioning.

Just a minute from the end of the lesson he then, satisfied with me so far, he told me he would overlook me not being around and always giving me best notes, if I only answered his last question: how the fallen angels came to be.

Strangely enough I hadn’t read a single book about that before, like all the other stuff, but there the memory storage in my halo came in handy.

“As far as I know, angels and fallen angels had been one once, being a race that balanced between light and dark, life and death.

In a time of prospering and wealth, the king died of age, and left his two sons to govern. Both of them had wanted to rule, so they split up in two equal groups and fought for control over the flying islands that was their home.

One brother favoured the light, the other the dark, and so their respective groups began to change, turning in our ‘angels’ and ‘fallen angels’.

Finally, their little sister had had enough of the war and took control of the capital city, that contained the control node for all the islands.

She let the dark side, the ‘fallen angels’ islands fall onto the demon lands, and rose up the ‘angels’ lands impossibly high up, just leaving the capital with her inside in the middle to continue keeping an equilibrium between light and dark.

The rising and falling didn’t stop the opposing factions from fighting though, even if they changed their style to mostly letting others fight their wars, angels aiding ‘light’ races and fallen angels aiding the ‘dark’.

That’s all I know.”

“...you’re wrong.” [Teacher]

“Nope, I’m not.”

“Every child knows that the angels used some bad tricks to let our islands fall.” [Student A]

“Yeah, can’t believe you don’t know that!” [Student B]

“And what if what you’re told is wrong? The victor writes the history books, but in that war nobody won. With them hating each other, there’s no wonder they would depict the other side as bad.”

“...I never thought about that this way. I will ask a few others about this theory. In the meanwhile, the lesson has ended, so you can go now.” [Teacher]

With him saying that, all the students started exiting, but I, who was sitting at the teacher’s table and therefore was closer to the door, held out the question sheet they had given me the day before.

When they recognised the paper, I put it on a nearby desk and started walking away: “Next time, for each question, bring me something sweet.”, was the comment I left them on the bottom of the sheet. (Questions and Answers in table at the bottom)

After leaving I made my way to the library, searching for books about Ard.

I would do some rather extreme and dangerous experiments in the area that was lent to me, and I was sure somebody would one day follow me to watch, so I had to create some sort of protection.

Enjoying this book? Seek out the original to ensure the author gets credit.

Recasting a spell every day would be absolutely annoying, and so I had to study Ard, as those were the only spells that lasted long.

Of course there were some symbols and such in my halo-library, but those were very complicated to the point that I could not understand them a bit.

So I had to study Ard from the beginning, not like I had much other things to do.

Ard, the Powers of Symbols, Sigils and Signs

I took a peek into the book to confirm it was about beginning Ard, then walked back towards my room, starting to read after flinging myself on my bed.

After some time I noticed Ann staring at me.

Did she need something?

I looked at her with raised eyebrows and prepared to ask, when I was interrupted by her stomach growling, and she lowered her head abashed.

Cute.

I sent her on a mission for some food, reminding her to speak up next time, then continued reading.

Learning magic is so much better than math, or anything in my old school, really.

Still, that my pillow was happy that I didn’t come with her eating is sad. I’ll have to cuddle with her a lot when she’s back.
