Chapter 9: Urban Justice

Chapter 9: Urban Justice

Justitia wakes up in a ghost town, not that she knows what a ghost is. The town was completely abandoned by the people of it, while Justitia never even got the chance to know its name. While she slept the whole population snuck out, and seems to have burned down everything left behind. One of the few houses standing is the one Justitia slept in, but not for a lack of flammability. That becomes clear when Justitia finds a note on the door.

'To the pigeon lady'

Justitia looks briefly at the note, but dismisses it. She is not a pigeon lady, thus this isn't for her. The pigeon lady in question must be nearby to be able to see the note, and that's probably why her house wasn't burned. Justitia thinks on if burning all this stuff is illegal, but decides that these houses might not have had building permits. That would be bad, so many evil houses naturally couldn't be tolerated. Regardless, this means that Justitia is well and truly done here, she requisitions some leftover food from the house she slept in, and flies further eastward. She must get to the east to rally with the anti-sinner forces.

This time, she doesn't bother to walk, and opts to fly instead. She felt like flying was a bad idea against those sinners, but doesn't feel it being that bad against the adventurers that control the land here. She also doesn't need to forage for brown mushrooms anymore, since she has some more food again. Mostly various preserved meats and doughs. She did have to look for quite a while to acquire it, but that makes sense considering the town was expecting a famine.

Justitia flies at a quick pace, disregarding everything she flies across. The various refugees don't notice her, because they are too scared of their surroundings to look up, that oddly dressed army merely has a few pointing fingers, the men most likely think they see some kind of fucked up looking bird. Slowly the patrolling soldiers become more common, not the local soldier types. Those always carry guns. These soldiers all wear standardized metal armors.

It doesn't take long for Justitia to find what she was looking for, an absolutely massive city is sprawled out ahead of her, and unlike the last town this one has a wall, or at least a wall in construction. She lands, and heads for the 'gate' while soldiers on the sides give her odd looks. She doesn't need to take off her blindfold to see them read her [Last Angel] trait. If they don't cause her problems, she will be fine with them...for now.

As she heads to the gate, she is stopped by a slightly better decorated soldier. He calls for someone with a monocle, and the monocled man starts inspecting her.

"What is the reason you stopped me? I do not appreciate being obstructed." Justitia lets her distaste be known, while the sergeant actually looks a bit surprised at her question.

"Standard procedure ma'am, terrorist attacks by a cultist group known as 'The Lost' have caused a great deal of suspicion on travelers, we can't allow entry without screening." The sergeant explains calmly, expecting the same rationality in return.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"You have no authority to hinder me, out of my way." Justitia casually pushes the man aside, and several of the soldiers on the half-constructed gate get their bows out, the sergeant tries to grab her to stop her, but is stopped by the monocled man. He whispers something in the sergeants ear, who promptly calls off the bowmen.

"Welcome to Warshawa ma'am, enjoy your stay." Despite the sergeants kind words, his tone is clearly different. He did not appreciate being snubbed, but co-operates with the [Angel] regardless.

As soon as Justitia enters, she feels something pluck one of her feathers, she immidiately rushes after the figure that darts into an alley, with her blade out. The figure in question clearly wasn't expecting such a heightenend response, and attempts to lose Justitia in the winding alleys. The thief stands no chance, and justice descends on the thief from above. Justitia pins the thief to the ground, and takes a good look at the thief.

Name: {Hidden} Species: Half-Orc Thief {Hidden}

Below the hood of the small figure, Justitia sees the face of a... child. Justitia lowers her blade, she can't judge this yet, she will have to find the parents of the child for now instead.

"Where are your legal guardians child?" The child resists for a bit, and tears begin to well up in his eyes.

"Dead, killed by soldiers that came to collect taxes." The child begins to stop trying to get out of Justitia's tungsten grip, and simply looks at the ground.

"Good, that means justice is administered, who collected these taxes?" The child gives a hateful glare to Justitia, a glare like that would get an older person killed.

"Look around you! This kingdom did, of course!" Kingdom? Justitia doesn't remember the U.N.E. being a kingdom, this kingdom doesn't have the right to collect taxes here. These anti-sinners must not be righteous, but she will have to observe more carefully before administering justice.

Justitia goes to collect her feather, and finds that it has turned...black? She quickly destroys the feather, it can't be black. That isn't right, her feathers are either a pure white, a soft blue, or the yellow of justice. She unconsciously touches her blindfold, and leaves the child behind. Who looks a bit baffled at being left just like that without getting even punched once for theft.

As Justitia moves back on the streets, she finds that this city is much less paranoid than the town. She can still easily tell locals apart from the new people in town, but the ratio is much more in favor of the new people. The locals keep to themselves, and try their best not to looks at anyone, while the new people have practically no paranoia in their eyes at all. It comes to the point where she can tell that they are staring at her, she would much rather have the paranoid looks of the locals than the greedy stares of colonial settlers.

Justitia needs a place that acts as a base of operations if she wants to purge this city of sin, a place where neither sinner nor righteous would go... her gaze settles on a sewer grate, located away from prying eyes.
