Chapter 10: Justice will (not) clean the filth!

Warshawa is a large city, and large cities have big sewers. Big sewers mean lots of filth, and this one is no different on the scale of filthiness than other sewers. The pungent smell of feces hangs in the air, a practical river of it slowly leaves the city to be dumped in the river that leads out of it. Much worse things live in the sewers, slimes that enjoy the large amounts of life cultivated by the large amounts of fertilizer, plants that don't rely on light to survive or can survive from the bioluminescent light from certain mushroom species, and shady people from the surface, seeking to do their business away from the prying eyes of the surface.

Now the sewer has been cursed even further, as a beautiful woman has entered it. The few predators that noticed her move through the sewers avoid the lone woman, their target looks too easy, and that only warrants suspicion. She moves with purpose, but not with a solid destination in mind. She has already encountered a few shady characters, and she feels as if they are sinners, but without the scales she cannot be certain if they have one or more parking violations. She will have to do extensive research into the population of the city above to be able to bring justice to them, and for that she needs a safe place to sleep.

Sin doesn't follow any guidelines, without a safe place to sleep she might be in trouble. As Justitia encounters another few shady characters, she decides to just walk up to them and ask for directions, sinners or not, they might know the area better than her.

"Excuse me sirs, do any of you perchance know of a good place to recover around here?" The people she approached jump in surprise, and a few pull weapons. In the dark they have a hard time seeing Justitia, and even when they bring their torch closer they only see the front of her, meaning they don't see her wings.

"The fuck lady? Where the fuck do you think you are?" A woman dressed in light leather armor asks, but she doesn't look too interested in the answer with her blade out. After a short silence, she is held back by a bearded orc.

"Apologies for my companion ma'am, folks like us tend to get a bit jumpy in the sewers, I'm sure you understand. The auction you are looking for lies in that direction, have a pleasant day." Justitia loosens her hold of her plasma cutter, she didn't even notice she was clenching it. She gives a short bow, and a thank you as she goes on her way. The woman in light armor on the other hand glares daggers at the old orc.

"Why did you do that? We don't even know who she is." The orc loses the smile he wore while he gave the strange woman directions, and gives a serious look at his companion.

"She had no light, yet she saw me give directions. I went out of my way to stand away from any light sources while giving those directions. We did not want to engage with that woman, I swear I saw an odd glow at her hip when you pulled your blades." The group goes silent at their realization that the old man's quick thinking probably just saved them. Even the old man himself doesn't know the extent of how much he just saved them.

Justitia is completely oblivious to what just transpired, as far as she is concerned she was given directions to a place to sleep. However, upon arrival of the directions given she doesn't find a nice bed, she finds a small market in the sewers. That's weird, she was sure that sewers weren't a preferable place for people to be. The place is well lit, and her entry is noticed by plenty of individuals, who see an [Angel] strolling around like she belongs there. People do their best not to stare, but only the more professional merchants succeed in this. They manage to drag people's attention back to things which do have a tangible price tag on them.

Justitia moves to one of the traders, looking for information. This trader has some cages with beds in them, and various potential sinners are within the cages. She doesn't know what makes someone a mutant, but if she had to say, then she could say these were definitely mutants like her. All the people in cages have various animal-like features, ranging from insectoid to avian.

"See anything you like, ma'am?" The merchant clasps his hands, and tries to follow the eyes of the angel visiting his store. His attempt is to no avail, as while it seems she's looking at the wolfman's cage, her gaze seems to be directed at the cage itself.

"These people have a safe sleeping spot, yet they don't seem too happy. Could you tell me why?" Justitia simply cannot fathom someone's basic needs being fulfilled, like food, water, a safe place to sleep, and justice enacted on everyone around them, yet still be unhappy.

"Because they are slaves, ma'am, I see you aren't too familiar with the concept, so I'll elaborate. These people committed crimes, and as punishment were enslaved to work off their debts." A punishment that isn't her blade? Perhaps those who lack justice have attempted to emulate justice for themselves, a commendable effort.

"That is so nice to hear! It would be a shame if everyone had to be executed for their sins! What crimes have they committed?" Justitia is truly elated, maybe the world isn't such a savage and unjust place after all.

"Nice to see a pious person agreeing with the idea, many modern gods and religions aren't big fans of forced labor for crimes done. The wolfman was raiding the countryside, ma'am, his clan pillaged many farming communities. This one didn't get away from the law." Pillage farming communities? That reminds Justitia of the town she pillaged together with the righteous.

They weren't deemed sinful for pillaging that farming community by the scales, therefore the act itself clearly isn't sinful. These people are being punished for no crime at all? That isn't right! That's not justice at all!

Justitia grips her plasma cutter hard, and in the last second of the merchant's life, regret flashes by. His whole body is dusted in an instant, and onlooking goons reach for their weapons. Justitia quickly destroys all the cages of the nearby slaves, some might be sinners, but she can't trust the judgement of the former man who put them there on it. The healthy slaves quickly rush out to grab anything nearby for weapons, while the ones who have been there for a while lay still in their cages, having lost the ability to resist.

Justitia moves to eviscerate everyone who moves to stop her, anyone who obstructs justice is a sinner, anyone who runs is attempting to evade justice, and is a sinner. There isn't much screaming, these people haven't survived this far by being loud. Few are also brave enough to actually engage a threat that got through the first dozen people already, merchants rapidly pack what they can and run.

As Justitia is cleaving through some thugs, she notices one of the slaves snapping a small, expensive-looking sapling in rage. The small tree falls to the ground, felled. Justitia looks on the crime in horror. How could these people use their newfound freedom so poorly?

"Do you have a logging permit?" Justitia's tone is dire, and the slave who was asked simply looks in distress at being addressed. It's clear he does not have a logging permit, and if he did, he certainly would be too slow to show it.

The slave is dusted along with the rest of the sinners, and other slaves look in horror as Justitia turns to them. The clever ones try to stay out of sight, the less clever ones raise weapons.

"Who else here has sinned?" Justitia asks the remaining people, and she will bring justice for every crime. And so the Warshawa black market dies, not with a scream, but a sad whimper.
