Chapter 69: StarLight

Machia Veil Timeline

3 am, September 9th – Bellatorn Estate, Denewood, Surridge

Nate’s heart stopped.

The congregation stopped, and Nate fell to his knees.

Ethriel, Cairis and other RayCrests above the cottage created a Markarian and everything stood still around them.

Nate embraced Kenya, gazing in disbelief.

“I am glad it was me and not you,” she said, smiling.

“Why did you do that? Why?” asked Nate.

“Rebalance The Parallels.” Her eyes watered. She lifted her hand to his cheek. “It’s the only way,” she said, realising how much blood she was losing.

Nate leaned his forehead on Kenya’s. And they stayed silent.

They closed their eyes and revisited their shared memories.

“Inhabiting simians,” said Nate, “we experienced the blue planet through their eyes.” They both laughed, tears flowing down their cheeks.

“Like fields of lavender and light,” she tried, but paused.

“Illuminating the darkness.” Nate continued. “Upon landing, we flew over rocky landscapes and over the sea.”

Kenya buried herself in him. Nate pressed her close in a tight embrace.

She faded.

His eyes grew wide. “You can’t leave me! You can’t!” he pressed her close.

A shiver ran through Nate’s body. He struggled to understand what had just happened, his gaze fixed on Kenya. He shook his head “No, no, no, no, no, no! Kenya!”

But she was unresponsive.

“We had never seen water before,” he said, trembling. “By nightfall, we floated over the ocean, and we witnessed a thunderstorm,” he held her tight, “we watched mesmerised as the sea swelled like a clash of ocean titans,” he was reliving it. “Gigantic mounds of dark reflecting the moon in shattered-like apparitions. Our hearts heaved with every wave, and every thunderbolt enthused us,” he said, rocking her. “The giants rocked us in this masterpiece of oceanic fury. Rocking back and forth. Every time the titans rose, we whooped with electrified joy.”

“Oh, my darling!” said Aria, embracing him.

But Kenya was gone.

His ears were pounding and with clouded vision he stood and charged against the frozen Archs, barrelling towards one uttering a war cry. He screamed and kicked. He took a branch from the ground, hammering an Arch. Nate fell back to the ground, exhausted.

“No, not again,” said Aria, her hands shaking as tears streamed down her face.

The congregation stood in silence.

He then walked back to Kenya and rocked her in his arms.
