Chapter 11: The Catch

Chapter 11: The Catch

Machia Veil Timeline

23:15 pm, July 8th – Village of Denewood, Surridge

Nate paced the crooked hallway. Running both hands through his hair. Pausing at a window and gazing out onto the silent street.

This is the end of me! I was so close to Mum! Where will I go? If only she walked through Denewood now, it would be okay again. Like it used to be. Remember when you took everything for granted?

Ignoring the voice, he averted his gaze.

I will get another job. I’ll head to Londoom!

He tossed and turned. His gaze flitted across the room, never settling on any part of it.

An hour later, he sat up on the bed and rocked himself back and forth. He missed his parents. He missed his aunts and uncles. The tight-knit Bellaton gang. His much-loved cousins. The staff that saw him grow up. Going hungry and cold filled him with dread. He glanced at the clock. Need to return it. Tomorrow. It ticked louder than ever. The seconds were endless, and the minutes brought him closer to a despair he wanted to forget. Wishing the sun would never rise, wanting to cry yet repressing his tears.

Past midnight

There were shouts in the hallway. It was Forester.

“I insist! This is unlawful entry!”

Nate stood up, agitated. Maybe the Sareton family was after him. There were pounding footsteps and colleagues yelling. Then a gunshot.

Silence.

Nate jumped back. He opened the window and hurled himself into the narrow gap between the two buildings. He kept steady, but the walls were greasy, and he fell through. Limping, he escaped, but a man in a dark suit overtook him and apprehended him.

“What are you doing? Let me go!” he said, struggling to break free from his tight hold. Another man arrived.

Who were these people? What did they want? The two men tied his arms and walked him towards a vehicle. As they neared it, he tried hard to free himself, but they used martial arts to hold him and injected something that stung. He yelled for help, but he lost his voice. Then it all went dark.
