There was naught, but a darkness so vast even the I now and of that time could not fathom it. Everything was darkness; I was darkness, but it all had to end, yes? I did not know how long it persisted to torment me, but it did end. When it did, the light blinded me for a time, and once I regained my sight, I noticed I was in a white space and not alone. Dozens of others were seen around me, which shocked and started everyone, but we all calmed down when she appeared before us.

"Everyone, please calm yourselves," this female called to us to calm, and calm we were. For she was beautiful, and her beauty even swayed the most timid of us. She began to speak once more, but I could not hear her. No, instead, I could only marvel in wonder at the beauty before me. Her figure was not in the shape of an hourglass, nor was it a pear, but somewhere in the middle. She was not well endowed, as with some females, but it was enough, and her pale, blue dress seemed to move and flow in an invisible breeze. However, her hair and eyes are what truly caught my interest, for they continuously changed colours, but never seemed to be the same. For instance, if her hair was molten silver in colour, her eyes were an ocean blue, and each change seemed to occur every few heartbeats.

Ah, forgive me for reminiscing. She is someone I hold near and dear to my still heart.

Anyways, as I continued to stare, the lack of people and its silence snapped me back into my own mind and body. I could hear a chuckle, and found her staring back at me. "Well," she began, "and who might you be?"

I could not remember my name in that instant, but had said, with a bowed head, "Your humble servant."

Her chuckle became laughter, which in turn flushed my own face as I recalled the words I had spoken. All I could do was sigh, stand up straight, place a hand over my left breast, and bow to one such as her. "Oh my," she giggled, wiping a few stray tears from her right eye, "I didn't know I needed that laugh. Thank you, and please, raise your head."

I did so, and looked upon a smile so bright and beautiful, I was again at a loss for words. I, who was outgoing and always had a few words to interject, was speechless to this goddess before me. "Are you alright?" She asked, and reached up to wipe a few tears from the corner of my eyes with a handkerchief.

I blinked a few times and responded with, "Never have I seen such radiant beauty upon this earth. Thank you for allowing me, but a glance upon your visage. I shall forever engrave all that is before me within my heart and soul, so that one day I may look upon all and proclaim to the heavens that I know what truly is beautiful." I did not bow again, but knelt before her as I proclaimed what was in my heart.

She did not know what to do, except to bid me to rise, and I did so. Her face was flushed, and she tried to form coherent sentences, but stopped when a hooded robed individual appeared before us, clapping its gloved hands together. "Marvelous," it said. I call it an IT, because the voice was neither male, nor female, but it was a haunting, neutral melody to our ears. "Simply marvelous."

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"I meant every word," I said to this being in front of us, and I did. She was beautiful, and still is to this day.

"I'm sure, I'm sure," it said to me, patting my shoulder a few times, "Come, we must explain what is to happen to you, and you must choose your race. Do not fret," it waved a gloved hand to the woman behind us, as it ushered me forward, "She will be around. After your little speech, she seems quite enamored towards you."

As we moved along, I noticed the world around me was still bright. So much so that it looked exceedingly white, and yet it wasn't. "Ah, you seem to have noticed it, too." The being before me chuckled, and whirled around exclaiming, "Welcome to Azzarath's world between worlds. It is here that we welcome those who would come to our world in hopes of a better future. What you make of it, and what you do, is purely up to you and your imagination.

"Now then," it brought up a globe of a world I could not recognise, and with a wave of its hand, brought into life thousands of avatars for me to choose from. "Before we get straight into the thick of character creation, I need to explain a few rules." A book appear in front of us, and the robed individual opened it, and began to leaf through its pages. "Here we are, and this is something interesting for you. There will be no annoying blue screens to appear before your eyes."

It waited until it became an awkward silence between us, coughed once, and asked, "What? No shocked look? No questions?"

I shrugged at him saying, "I didn't expect such a thing in any of my other games, so why expect it in this one?"

It coughed once more, "Anyways, there won't be any bars to show you how much health, mana, or stamina you will have." Again it waited, and again the silence became awkward. "Why aren't you surprised?! Everyone else was surprised!" It yelled at my apathy, to which I shrugged once more.

"My brother and I have an odd quirk. We tend to absorb information faster, and adapt to it between a few seconds, to a few hours. I didn't expect this, truly I did not, but after seeing the beauty from before, nothing you can say will surprise me. Oh, and before you try lying, saying she is married or some such thing, know that she is right behind you." The being whirled in place, staring at the empty void behind it, trying to see where the goddess might be. However, there was nothing to be seen. "Ah," I grinned, "Made you look."

It whirled on me, spitting out half words angrily, as I laughed in its shadowed face. We could hear a few wails of laughter coming from all sides, which calmed me down considerably. "Good show," came one voice, which was followed by a "Bravo". Others commented on what transpired, or were receiving the details. It seemed to me that I was a new attraction for this pantheon of unknowns. Even now, I wonder if I should have kept my mouth shut, as my life became forever interesting once I did.
