Chapter 11

The Draconic Book

BACK AT MY HOUSE

I believe the kid went to retrieve the treasure I told him about. Will he even return? After all, the treasure is within the Demon’s Spider cave. A Demon Spider is an existence comparable to a greater dragon. Of course, dragons hold the advantage due to their ability to fly but if they would fight on the ground, then there is no way a dragon could win. Well, nothing I can do about that now, is there?

I then show up from the forest. Blue comes running towards me.

“You’re back, kid. So, how was it?”

“You do know that I’m kinda your superior, right? So, you should cut the ‘kid’ crap when talking to me.”

“Oh, yeah. I never really got your name either.”

“Call me Allen.”

“Huh, what kind of name is that? Is it a made-up name or something?”

Says the guy whose name is that of a colour that is opposite to his hue. Well, it is a name Gram gave me.

“So, Allen. Did you find the treasure?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Really! Where is it? Did you leave it back at the cave because of the Demon Spider?”

He speaks like he was concerned for me but I can tell from his expression that he thinks I ran or something. I then take out a portion of the treasure out of my storage space.

“W- what!”

The geezer greeny seems shocked. I guess he didn’t expect me to find it, let alone obtain it. I glare at the geezer.

“What’s the matter, old geezer? You seem surprised. Did you by any chance think that I wasn’t going to find it?”

“No, no young human, I am just surprised. You surprised me, that’s all.”

“Allen,” I say, a tad irritated at being referred to as ‘young human’.

“What?”

“My name, it’s Allen.”

“Ah yes. Forgive me for my blunder Master Allen.”

“Anyways, I managed to find the treasure, so as per our deal, I shall protect you guys. Of course, that is if you are useful to me.”

The elder geezer then looks down. It seems he didn’t want to object. But what use could these guys be anyways? I mean, they can use spirit magic but I doubt they can even fully utilise it. I read that a monster can evolve when it eats magic cores. Both their magic capacity and physical abilities improve. Well even though they are semi-spirits, they are close to monsters so they should be useful somehow, right?

I then take out some magic cores that I had stored up.

“Here, eat these. With how weak you guys are, you can’t even defeat a goblin alone.”

The greenies are surprised. I don’t really care about it though.

To think he would give us so much magic cores. And sensing from the magic in them, they seem to be from high level monsters, monsters that can rival humans’ mightiest warriors. He should know this but monsters need magic cores to evolve but for us greenies, eating these won’t make us evolve. Instead, they’ll boast our physical abilities and our spirit magic. With these, we should be able to be as strong as orcs. No, we’ll even be stronger.

“Oh yeah, I be entering retreat for a few months so you guys absorb those cores, okay?” I say and sigh. “I guess I should summon her too.”

I then summon Gaia, the Spirit King of Nature. It seems she was taking a bath since the bath is also summoned. She is shocked by the sudden summon but with a snap of her fingers, she is already dressed.

“You summoned me, Master.”

The geezer elder and the other greenies start shaking with fear. Only Blue is fine with a smug grin on his face. I guess I’ll have to teach him a lesson later. He’s been getting cocky as of late.

“Yeah, I’ll be entering retreat for a few months so teach these guys spirit magic. I also leave the task of protecting my gram to you.”

“Understood.”

She’s a lot behaved from last time. I guess she’s been practicing. I’ll have to reward her later but what gift would be suitable for a spirit king? I then leave to my secret hideout in the forest.

“Hehehe, now he’s finally gone. Blue, was it?” says Gaia with an evil smirk.

“Umm, My Queen. I don’t understand. What have I done wrong?”

“Since Master tasked me into training you guys, then I’ll train you really good and I’ll start with you.”

The few months I was in retreat were hell for Blue, or at least that’s what they told me.

I arrive at my secret hideout. I created this hideout at the beginning of my monster hunting days as a break point. But after a while, I transformed it into a literal ‘man cave’. It has everything inside from a big spring bath to a bar to a game room and more. The game room is filled with games I’ve recreated out of boredom like a snooker pool table and a soccer table. The bar has the alcohol experiments I’ve been trying to recreate from my previous life to no avail. I thought I could recreate it like my previous life’s world but it seems my chemistry knowledge isn’t enough.

The other reason I created this place is for it to be a form of proof of my previous world just in case I forget about it. Of course, now that I have mindscape it’s inconsequential.

I then begin my retreat, starting with ‘The Draconic Book’.

“Kid, it’s best you forget about that book,” says Ray.

“Why?”

“That book never opens for anyone who isn’t a descendant of the Draconic race.”

“Descendants? You mean dragons are the only ones who can open this book?”

“No, dragons aren’t the descendants of the Draconic race. It’s the three royal families of this continent.”

“Wait what? Dragons aren’t the descendants of the Draconic race?”

“I guess I’ll need to tell you the story, huh. How annoying.”

And so, Ray tells me the story. The Draconic race is a race that lived in this world ten thousand years ago. No one knows where they came from, they just appeared. But not long after that, maybe hundred to two hundred years later, they disappeared. Legend says they perished under a great evil which descended onto this world with their companions who defended this world but no one knows the true story.

Before their demise however, they entrusted their will to a few chosen humans. They offered their blood to them, and those humans were thus known as the descendants of the Draconic race. Each of those humans, with incredible power which they received from the blood, were offered three sacred treasures by the Draconic race. Their duty was to protect those treasures and to never unite them as that would cause the fall of this world.

Each splinter group then built a kingdom of their own in the continent. Those kingdoms were known as The Great Empire, The Esteria Kingdom and the kingdom that fell 30 years ago, the Romelia Kingdom known now as the Virian Empire. Each of them guarded the treasure that has been passed down for generations without knowing anything about it.

“The Draconic Book is one of those treasures and the Esteria Kingdom was the one protecting it.”

“Huh, I see. Maybe there is some kind of magic making it unable to be opened if it is not the person who is a

‘descendant’. Let’s see.”

I then study the book. It has a cover made of a golden material. There is a kind of lock overlapping the pages and is connected to the other cover. I then pull the lock and the book yawns opens.

“W- what did you do, kid? Did you use some sort of spell?”

“No. I just opened it.”

“What do you mean you just opened it? It can’t be opened.”

“I did though. Maybe I’m just lucky.”

Lucky my ass. This book can’t be opened except by a person who is a descendant of the Draconic race. Which means, someone who has royal blood of the three kingdoms. Could this kid be… nah, there’s no way. Otherwise, what would he be doing here?

“What’s with this weird language?” I ask.

“Well, that book is written in the ancient tongue. And there is no one in the world who knows this language.”

“What!”

“Yeah. It is said that this book contains knowledge of the past. Secrets of magic, secrets of alchemy both potion and pill, and many more. But no one can read it, so yeah.”

“Hmm, these symbols remind me of Egyptian hieroglyphs.”

“Huh, Egyptian hieroglyphs? What’s that?

“You can look at my memories.”

The kid is willing to show me his memories just like that? Is he that naïve? Well, with the slave contract on, it’s not like I can do anything against this kid.

“Using mindscape, I think I might decipher it. But it’ll take at least six months even if I give it all my attention,” I say, and then smirk. “Good thing I have another brain. I’ll leave it to you, Ray.”

“You’re from another world?”

“Oh, yeah I am.”

“W- what! Were you summoned here or what?”

“Look at my memories you idiot.”

“Oh, I see.”

“But what did you mean by ‘summoned’?” I ask.

“Oh yeah, the Holyland has a way to summon people from another world. I think the current Hero is from another world too.”

“How do you even know this if you were sealed for hundred odd years?”

“I know most of these things because I once possessed a priest of the Holyland and discovered a lot of secrets from them, that’s why I was sealed. As for the rest, well, let’s just say I have friends who have been providing me with information about recent events when I was sealed.”

By friends, he probably means other demonic spirits. I wonder what else he learned from the Holyland. After all, holy magic is also on my list of study.
