Chapter 10

My name is Ruri and I’m what humans call a beastman. I’m from the Silver Fox clan, a race of foxes. The Silver Fox members are known for their unique silver hair and eyes. We are a race that specializes in ice magic, and we live in a small village that is close to the Empire.

We are also considered one of the weakest races from the other beastmen because we depend too much on magic. Because we descended from the ancient beast, the Nine-tails fox, other beastmen races have been jealous of our bloodline for years.

Overtime, our bloodline from the nine-tails fox dwindled to the point where no one in our village was able to use even a single high-level magic spell. We were pushed down from our pedestal and reduced to nothing.

Even though I am from the silver fox clan, I have an attribute for fire instead of ice. I was an outcast in my village, and I hated that. People called me a curse and the destruction of the silver fox clan since the fire attribute was the exact opposite of the ice attribute.

A week ago, our village was attacked by the men in iron from the Empire. Since they believe in the Goddess Athena, beastmen are considered an abomination. Men dressed in iron came charging in, killing and trampling on all that was in sight. A lot of my kind died at their hands and not only that, but some were also captured as slaves.

My parents died in that incident. Now, I’m alone. I do have a sister but since she left a long time ago to pursue her dream of being an adventurer, I never saw her again.

I managed to slip under the noses of the men in iron who captured us and ran after the efforts of the other clan’s men’s sacrifice. I’ve been running for many days now. I haven’t slept a wink all this time or ate for that matter. I don’t even know how I reached this forest.

It’s cold. I’m hungry. I’m scared.

The images of those men in iron killing my kind keeps flashing before my eyes.

I don’t want to die. I want to live. At least, until I get my revenge. But I’m going to die. If I don’t die out of hunger, then I’m going to die in the hands of these monsters.

A tiger monster jumps out of the bushes. It’s been observing me ever since I entered this forest. I know this because I felt like I was being watched ever since I entered this forest. At least my death will benefit it.

My eyes start getting blurry.

Huh, I’m still not dead? Why is that tiger monster just standing there? Is it afraid? Did a stronger predator come?

“Scram!”

A voice? A human? No, not a human. Please, anything but a human.

“Sara?!”

Huh, Sara? Who’s that?

“A beastman, huh? Come to think of it, I haven’t met a beastman yet.”

Oh no. He’s getting closer. Is he going to eat me? Is he going to sell me as a slave? If something bad is going to happen to me. At least I must see my aggressor with my own eyes.

With all the strength in my body, I open my eyes. And there he is. Beautiful white hair that is complemented by the falling snow. Blue eyes that reminded me of the open blue sky on a summer day. Pretty.

Wow, how can anyone look so beautiful?

My admiration stops when I feel a chill down my spine. This person is dangerous. A beastman’s instinct is never wrong. Even though he looks innocent, I can tell he can kill me without batting an eye.

“There are a lot of questions I want to ask you, but I guess they can wait. What I will ask you however is do you want to live?”

Even though every hair in my body is screaming out of fear. There is something about this person’s eyes that just makes me want him to save me. Why do I feel this way?

“Y-yes. I-I want to l-live!” I say as my voice shivers from the cold air.

“Then from now on, you can call me big brother Allen or Brother Al for short.”

“B-brother Al?”

“Starting from now on. You’ll be my sister. I can promise you that as long as I live, nothing will harm you ever again.”

His smile is so soothing to look at but It’s too bad that I don’t have the strength to open my eyes anymore. And then, darkness fills my eyes.
