CHAPTER 386
I'm Jared's girlfriend! Tonight is supposed to be the night Jared introduces me to his friends. So shouldn't I be the center of attention?! But why is everyone gathering around Caitlin like she's the main star instead? Is Caitlin a jinx in my life? First, she robbed me of my position as the Campus Beauty. Now, she stole away the limelight that should've been mine! Resentment continued to surge within her as she thought of that.
Even so, there was nothing Heidi could do, despite how frustrated she was. Everyone was literally gathering around Caitlin while she stood outside the crowd. No one seemed to bother to cast a glance at her. She was being treated as if she was invisible to the point that she couldn't even chime in.
That evening, Lucian Wheeler, was the last person to enter the establishment.
Once he entered, he felt it was rather odd when he saw his childhood friends gathering around a young lady.
Nevertheless, the moment he took a clear look at the young lady's face, he felt the blood all over his body freeze in shock.
Yet, it wasn't entirely frozen. In fact, he felt it was more like shifting between frozen and boiling. But, all in all, it was a feeling that he couldn't describe in words.
Before he had the time to dive into his thoughts, he spotted the wound on Caitlin's forehead.
He instantly bristled with rage, and the inexpressible feeling he was experiencing earlier wasn't at the forefront of his mind as he felt himself exploding into a righteous fury.
At this moment, he only felt his blood boiling due to anger and protectiveness. He strode over and rushed to Caitlin. Finally, he stared closely at the wound on her forehead and asked furiously, "Who did this?!"
When he laid his eyes on the wound, his boiling anger turned into a biting one that promised vengeance, the furious and murderous intent in his eyes made him seem like he wouldn't hesitate to kill the person responsible.
Caitlin, on the other hand, was able to keep calm after Lucian's appearance. As they grew up together, she knew Jared, Gilbert, Fergus, and Theodore were all Lucian's childhood friends. Therefore, since the moment she encountered Jared and the rest of their group, she had been mentally preparing herself for the possibility of meeting Lucian tonight.
Now that they had encountered each other at this moment, Caitlin simply felt particularly amused when she saw the tint of anger and pity displayed in Lucian's eyes as if he was furious and worried about her injury.
"What's wrong? Why are you yelling?" She looked at Lucian with mocking eyes. "Wasn't it you the one who hurt me the most? Or are you trying to disgust me by saying something like no one else but you can hurt me? Please, I'm begging you. Don't you ever say words that would disgust me and make me puke. Although I'm living a tough life now, I still want more years to live and enjoy my life. So I don't want to be grossed out by you so much that I'll vomit to death."
When Lucian heard the familiar lilt coupled with her sarcastic tone, he felt like someone had slashed his heart with a sharp knife.
No.
It wasn't someone.
He felt like countless people were slashing his heart with countless sharp blades, creating a bloody mess.
Lucian involuntarily clenched his fists as he tried his best to curb the pain in his heart. Finally, after a while, he turned to look at Jared and asked, "What happened?"
"It's my fault. It's my fault…" Jared felt ashamed and guilty as he briefly explained what had just happened. In the end, he even raised his right hand and pledged, "I swear I really didn't know it was Katy. I'd never lift a finger on her if I knew it was her. Instead, I would rather beat myself up."
Lucian, Theodore, Gilbert, and Fergus believed him.
Since the Leighton Family and the Owen Family were neighbors, naturally, Jared and Caitlin grew up together. Moreover, Jared had always regarded Caitlin as one of his dearest family members, so he would never add insult to her current misfortune, even if the rest of the world did.
Despite believing in the truth in his words, it still couldn't wipe off the sense of anger within them. Hence, Theodore and Gilbert couldn't help but punch Jared while saying to Caitlin, "Katy, we'll help you beat him up!"
"Yes. Yes. Yes," Jared, who was punched twice, said humbly, "I deserve a good kick in the head. So don't hold yourself back."
Caitlin said in exasperation, "Forget it." She didn't really hold any grudges against Jared. "I'm not angry. It's just that I indeed need you to help me ask for a leave tonight."
If it were her own job, she would've resigned and left right there and then. Still, this job belonged to Josephine. Since Josephine didn't come from a well-off family and was in dire need of this job, Caitlin would rather let herself feel wronged than cause Josephine to lose her job.
"Sure! Sure! Not a problem!" Jared nodded repeatedly. "Don't worry. I'll help you inform the supervisor. Also, I'll reserve this room for tonight. I'll have the final say regarding where you're going tonight. I won't let them count this as a leave and will tell them to pay you the salary as per agreed."
"Well then, thanks!" Caitlin smiled. "I'll go first. After that, you guys can just help yourselves."
"Don't go!" Lucian abruptly grabbed her wrist. "Katy, let's talk."
Caitlin shook his hand off. "We've already made things clear between us. So I don't think there's any need for us to talk further."
Alas, Lucian was unwilling to let things end like this. Thus, he blocked Caitlin's path, glanced at Heidi and her three friends coldly, and demanded. "Get out!"
Yvette, Xandria, and Andrea were so frightened by his cold glare that they instantly left without protest.
Only Heidi still stood in the room, feeling reluctant to leave just like this. Therefore, she turned to look at Jared with her pitiful eyes and called out, "Jay…"
"Go away!" Jared frowned in disgust. "Don't you ever tell others that you know me in the future!"
Heidi was so shocked to the point that she wasn't even able to shed tears of sadness. Don't tell others that I know him? What does he mean by that? Is he breaking up with me? B-But I haven't done anything with him yet! I haven't gotten to know his friends yet. I have yet to let more people know that I have become his girlfriend. For goodness sake, I haven't managed to get a chance for my family's company to become partners with the Leighton Family's company through Jared yet. In fact, I haven't even kissed him yet, not to mention having s*x with him. Yet, everything's over before I can do anything?!
At this juncture, she was so shocked that she felt her heart was about to stop beating. Still, she wanted to give it one last try. "Jay, I… I…" Heidi stammered.
She wanted to explain. She wanted to apologize. Regardless, she didn't know how or where she should start.
In her perspective, everything that happened this evening wasn't her fault. She felt that it was all Caitlin's fault. Regrettably, no matter how Heidi racked her brain, she couldn't think of any words of apology to persuade Jared to forgive her and mend their broken relationship.
"Don't call me that ever again!" Jared frowned impatiently. "Leave now! Don't force me to call security!"
Heidi was genuinely heartbroken when she saw the apparent repugnance in Jared's eyes. Finally, she couldn't bear it any longer. She turned around and dashed toward the door in tears.
When she ran past Caitlin, she shouted bitterly, "I hate you! Caitlin, you deserve the karma that landed upon you and your family now! Today is just the beginning, and you'll suffer even worse than today in the future. I shall wait and see what other misfortunes that will happen to you!"
With that, she ran away sobbing without giving Caitlin a chance to refute her. Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Since Heidi was yelling those words to Caitlin just now, Lucian heard them too, and his face instantly became livid with anger. Then, he shouted at the door, "Tucker, follow that lady and slap her hard!"
Tucker, who followed Lucian, stood outside the door and responded. "Yes, Young Master Lucian."
As soon as he responded, he moved his feet, wanting to chase after Heidi. But, before he could do any of those things, Caitlin's voice rang from inside the room. "Tucker, get in here."
In an instant, Tucker retracted his feet that were about to move.
He was in a dilemma, for he didn't know whose orders he should obey.
Theodore took pity on him as he decided to rescue him from his dilemma. "Come in here, Tucker."
Tucker breathed a sigh of relief. "Yes." It's two against one, so I should listen to the side with more people.
He swiftly entered and addressed them respectfully, "Young Master Lucian. Young Mistress Caitlin."
"You don't serve me anymore, so Caitlin will do," Caitlin said as she looked at Tucker, "But we're still friends, so I advise you not to chase after her and beat her up for no reason. Otherwise, you'll be arrested by the police.
"It's not for no reason," Lucian retorted while clenching his fists, "She scolded you."
"I don't need you to meddle in my affairs." Caitlin looked at him sternly. "Like I've said before: the person who hurt me the most in this world is you! If you ask Tucker to slap Heidi's face just because she cursed me, then you should let Tucker slap you first."
