CHAPTER 330
Angie had the audacity to scheme against Philip's wife and son?
How many lives did she think she had?
The worst part was that Angie had also dragged him into her mess!
Now, Jeffrey finally understood everything.
He understood why the subject of his ex-wife was suddenly brought up when it had been buried for so long, and they even discovered proof.
It was all because of Angie!
At this moment, he was very regretful.
If he had known, he would have stayed far away from her; even if she grasped his leg and begged him, he would have smacked her away.
Danger hides in beauty and beauty in danger.
Then, the lawyer stated, "Mr. Jeffrey, your current circumstance is extremely unfavorable to you. Therefore, I suggest that you plead guilty and seek leniency."
"Perhaps... Perhaps the surgery will fail?" Jeffrey was still holding on to that last shred of hope.
"Even if your ex-wife's surgery fails, the current evidence is enough to convict you," the lawyer stated.
"Why? Could Cara's nonsense be enough to convict me?" Jeffrey was not convinced.
"The one million you gave Cara to bribe her is not actually legal," the lawyer added, "We cannot win this litigation as long as the opposing side employs a skilled lawyer."
''You're telling me that I'm doomed regardless of the outcome of Charlotte's surgery?'' Jeffrey's complexion started paling as the realization set in.
He didn't want to go to prison.
He was just in his fifties and wealthy, powerful, and well-connected. He was still in the prime of his life with a great career and was living his best life.
If he was imprisoned, all that remained was anguish and torment. His entire life would be doomed!
"Yes," the lawyer said. "And it was also the president of the Hart Corporation who sent you in here... Mr. Jeffrey, think about it. Given Hart Corporation's power, would you ever stand a chance of being released?"
Jeffrey's expression turned pallid.
Right.
How could he forget that the head of the Hart Corporation sent him in?
With their strength and ability, they could always find a way to prove that he was guilty. But, of course, it didn't hurt that he was indeed guilty, either.
Not only that, but even if he was fortunate enough to find a loophole in the law and avoid imprisonment, they had the capacity to make him lose everything, bit by bit.
If so, he might be worse off than being imprisoned.
He eventually realized he had no way out.
He had been on a downward trajectory since the day he fell in love with Angie.
Even if he didn't shove Charlotte down the steps, the Hart Corporation wouldn't let him go because of his status as Angie's husband.
That bitch Angie really destroyed him!
If only he had known…
But then again, twenty-twenty hindsight.
Despite getting older, he was lustful and refused to settle down. He demanded a divorce from his wife and married a lovely young woman just to indulge himself as much as he could before he turned too old.
Unfortunately, he had forgotten the fact that there was no reason as to why a young and lovely lady would marry an old man like him.
It was as though his thoughts were clouded, and he believed Angie had genuinely fallen in love with him and married him because she was charmed by him.
But now, he instantly understood that Angie married him because she didn't have a better option.
Whoever married a vicious and ruthless woman like her was destined for misfortune, and everyone but him was wise enough to stay away.
At this moment in his life, his love and lust for her turned into a pot of simmering rage and hate. He despised Angie so much that he wanted to strangle her till death just to vent his wrath!
Jefferey clenched his teeth and asked, "When can I be released?"
The lawyer hesitated. “If your ex-wife hasn't woken up after 48 hours and the police don't have any new evidence, I can apply for bail; however, if your ex-wife wakes up while you are out on bail, you will lose the chance to ask for leniency. Hence, I advise you to confess to the police immediately to reduce your sentence.”
"No, I have to leave! I still have a lot to deal with!" snarled Jeffrey.
He had to take care of Angie personally, or it would be impossible to eliminate the hatred in his heart.
Moreover, there was something more important... He had to transfer his assets before entering prison; otherwise, he wouldn't know how his children would treat him after learning that Charlotte was pushed down the stairs by his own hands.
His children were already at odds with him due to his marriage to Angie, and if they knew that he pushed their mother, Charlotte, down the stairs, he was afraid that his children would join hands to embezzle his assets.
If he were lucky, even if he were convicted, he would be able to leave prison in about three to five years.
Yet, he needed money after being released to maintain his comfortable lifestyle. Content is property © .
Without money, he would be utterly ruined.
"Okay." Since he insisted on leaving, the lawyer had no choice but to follow his client's will. "I'll take care of the arrangements for you if the police don't have any fresh evidence in 48 hours."
Even if he didn't shove Charlotte down the steps, the Hart Corporation wouldn't let him go because of his status as Angie's husband.
The two came to an agreement, and the lawyer left the police station. He returned to his car and pulled out his phone to call Billy Miller, Jeffrey's son. "Mr. Miller."
“How did it go?” Billy questioned.
The lawyer replied, "He didn't plead guilty, but I tried to question him based on his guilt, and he didn't refute it. So it's unlikely that Cara lied. Your father did, in fact, shove your mother down the stairs."
Billy bribed him, so he laid a trap for Jeffrey while he was speaking to him earlier.
Jeffrey didn't verbally admit that he had shoved Charlotte down the steps; instead, he hinted as much, and Jeffrey didn't dispute the fact.
This was sufficient evidence that Jeffrey indeed shoved Charlotte down the stairs.
On the other end of the phone, Billy clenched his fists tightly. His face darkened as he ground his teeth in fury. Then, after a long while, he finally bit out two words, "I understand."
He hung up the phone and swept the items on the desk to the floor in order to vent his anger.
Then, he gripped the table tightly as he tried his best to suppress his wrath while taking several deep breaths, chest heaving. Then, he made a call when he had managed to wrangle his emotions into submission. "Prepare the car. We're heading to Windview Villa."
Windview villa was where his father allowed Angie to live.
His father intended to bring Angie back to the main house when they had legalized their marriage. But Angie had to spend all of her time at Windview villa because he and his sister protested vehemently at her existence in their lives. Thus, his father had no choice but to make arrangements for Angie to stay in that villa.
After he hurried to the house, he rushed into the living room and immediately noticed Angie curled up on the couch.
She was on the phone, smiling while cradling a cat in her arms and relaxing on the couch in her maroon house robe.
As Billy entered the room, she flashed him a seductive look before saying on the phone, "I still have some stuff to do. I'll talk to you soon."
She hung up the phone and set it aside. "Bill, why are you here?" she said as she stood up while holding the cat.
She spoke in a coquettish manner. The wine-red house robe barely covered anything, exposing a considerable area of her fair, tender skin. Nonetheless, Billy felt nothing but disgust for her instead of finding it attractive.
