CHAPTER 342
Stumped, Frank tried to retort, "But you're a doctor…"
"Who cares if I am one?" Leigh insouciantly answered as she fixed her sleeves. "If a doctor has to save everyone, wouldn't they be bushed?"
Frank parted his lips but didn't know what to say for a moment. He had never met a doctor like Leigh before.
Isn't it a doctor's job to save lives? How can Dr. Shefford turn them down so justifiably?
"Thank you for saving my daughter's life, Dr. Shefford!" Jennifer didn't get upset because of Leigh's poor attitude. Instead, she was genuinely grateful toward her.
She understood Frank's words well. It was all thanks to Leigh that Luna managed to survive.
Moreover, she wasn't one to look down on Leigh and think that Frank was exaggerating just because Leigh was young.
Abilities and age never always went hand in hand, and she was the perfect example.
Her mother was one of the best relic conservators in the country as well, but she herself had surpassed her mother in her twenties and accomplished tasks that not even her mother could.
People always believed diligence could make up for lost talent, as well as the fact that success was one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. This might be the case for the average person, but it was only when one wanted to climb to the peak of an industry that they'd realize no
perspiration in the world could make up for the one percent of talent.
She believed prodigies were more capable than some of their elders, for she was the perfect example herself.
Thus, she believed all that Frank had said and was certain Leigh could help her poor daughter.
Since she was the nation's greatly treasured relic conservator, she received the highest regard no matter where she went. However, she didn't show even a sliver of loftiness because of this. "Dr. Shefford, could you please nurse my daughter to health? We can agree with whatever request you make!" she entreated.
"Dr. Lawson's right. I am a doctor, but I also have a rule—I don't treat three kinds of people." At that, she listed unhurriedly, "One, anyone that throws their weight around. Two, anyone that is fated to die. Three, anyone that I have a problem with!"
Then, she smiled at Jennifer. "I saved your daughter today because she did something that pleased me, but you can forget about having me nurse your daughter to health."
"Why is that so?" Jennifer asked anxiously. "Is it because she has done something wrong and pissed you off? If so, I'm willing to apologize on her behalf."
"It's not her—it's someone else." Leigh shifted her gaze to Brandon before turning back to Jennifer, asking, "You guys are from the Penham Family too, aren't you? Who is Ava Penham to you?"
Jennifer was stumped for a split second before she answered, "Ava is a niece from my husband's
side."
"Your niece, huh…" Leigh smiled, still as insincere as before. "Do you know how your niece insulted my nephews? She called them b*stards and said they would be slaves to others in the future!"
"Leigh!" Madeline frowned. Do you have to repeat something so unpleasant in front of so many people?!
Leigh tilted her head and looked into Madeline's eyes. "Don't shy away from it! Who knows just what people say behind your back when they even dare to insult you right in your face! Do you really expect people to shut up just because you turn away and say nothing?"
Madeline was at a loss for words. Oh, forget it! Everyone in the office is a weirdo. Am I their boss? Huh, I'm more like their nanny! I can't get them to do anything I say until it's about their livelihoods!
Jennifer already loathed Ava to the core, and upon finding out that Ava was the reason behind Leigh's refusal to treat her daughter, she loathed the young woman even more, wishing she could skin Ava alive! Belongs to © n0velDrama.Org.
At that, she fought back her anger and explained to Leigh, "Dr. Shefford, Ava's the reason for my daughter's injuries today. The two girls have always had a terrible relationship, so I—"
"So what?" Leigh interrupted. "It's evident that your family has parenting problems when you guys can raise someone so ill-bred like Ava. Who knows how horribly you Penhams insult my two nephews in private when Ava dares to do so in our faces?"
Jennifer shook her head at once. "We don't! I—"
"Forget it. There's no point talking about it," Leigh interrupted again. "I'm already willing to save your daughter because she belabored Ava. Nursing someone to health is a tedious and complicated process; it's pretty draining mentally and physically. Why should I help a disreputable family when there are so many people in the world waiting to be saved?"
"Why is that so?" Jennifer asked anxiously. "Is it because she has done something wrong and pissed you off? If so, I'm willing to apologize on her behalf."
"No, it's not like that! We—"
"Come on, Maddie. Let's go!" Jennifer had wanted to explain further, but Leigh couldn't be bothered anymore. With that, she grabbed Madeline's hand and wanted to bypass Jennifer, only to be stopped by Brandon. "Please hold on, Dr. Shefford."
Leigh stopped in response and looked at him with furrowed brows. "I've already stood by the operating table for over six hours to save your daughter. I'm really exhausted right now, and I don't have the mood to continue chatting with all of you. If you guys keep at this, don't blame me for being heartless!"
Brandon swallowed his words back at once and could only watch Leigh shoot a nasty look at him before leading the young woman away.
Livid yet worried, Jennifer questioned Austin angrily, "Just what the heck happened?! Who are Dr. Shefford's nephews?! Why would Ava call them b*stards?!"
Just as lost as Jennifer was, Austin looked to Johannes, who answered hesitantly, "Dr. Shefford's n- nephews… s-seem to be… Mr. Sebastian Hart's sons…"
"What did you say?!" Austin couldn't believe what he had just heard. "Say it again. Whose sons are they?!"
Johannes lowered his head in response. "Mr. Sebastian Hart's sons."
Austin blacked out for a split second. "Just what the heck was Ava thinking?! Has she gone mad?!"
Anybody in Dusktown who knew Sebastian would certainly know that he wasn't someone anybody could afford to mess with! Does Ava have a screw loose?! How dare she call Sebastian's sons b*stards?! Right in their aunt's face, at that!
"Ava, she… she was drunk…" Austin's voice turned softer as he spoke.
"Does that give her the right to speak ill of others and act lawlessly?!" Jennifer was so livid that her body trembled, and her lips quivered for some time before she dropped a bomb. "I want to split our family up!"
The next second, she pulled herself together and turned to Brandon, enunciating gravely, "Brandon, I want to split our family up! Publish it in the papers tomorrow. The Penham cadet branch has nothing to do with the senior branch anymore!"
Austin blacked out once more upon hearing that, and he nearly passed out.
