Chapter 26 Substitute

Chapter 26 Substitute

We stayed a few days before we even thought about leaving again. The others got on friendly terms with Fire and talked a lot, while I showed my little sister how she could grow her own plants.

She was a fast learner and only needed some hours before she could create similar ones. Lucy was a talented person, but she was missing the basic knowledge in about everything.

I was the same when I first left the island. It was a problem of staying secluded from others. I did my best to teach her the most important basics in those few days. It was a lot of fun, but we had to leave eventually.

Whenever I had the time, I would stroll around the house to search for something of value for us. It was only wishful thinking and I was already aware of the fact that there was nothing to loot for me, but at least I killed some time with it.

After the fourth day, Takeshi and Hiro went back to the forest and started to build our boat, so we could at least return to the human continent. It looked like; we would just return like that and take another boat to the Spirit’s continent.

That also meant we would leave Lucy and Fire behind. They were capable comrades though and could be essential for us, or at least for me. I knew the boat would be finished soon, so I didn’t have much time to convince them to come with us.

Luckily, I was able to talk to Lucy one more time at the last day.

“Fire said you had something you wanted to talk about?”(Lucy)

I knew the demon butler was a loyal servant, so I already informed him of everything beforehand and asked him to help me.

“Yes. I wanted to know if you feel lonely here on this island.”(Me)

“This…I…” (Lucy)

“The thing is I would like you and Fire to come with us.”(Me)

She looked troubled. Perhaps Lucy already anticipated my proposal and wanted to travel with us, but she couldn’t just leave our homeland behind, like me.

“But…”(Lucy)

“Don’t worry about the island. I have the core with me and as long as it is safe, this island will be as well. Moreover no one will be able to even reach the mountains because of that damn forest.”(Me)

I obviously didn’t have the core with me. I had some suspicions as to where it was though.

It was hard work to convince her, but in the end, I succeeded with sweet-talking her. After telling Lucy about the outside world and a few good things that happened to me, I was finally able to convince her.

“Before we leave, I’d like you to do me a favour.”(Me)

“There’s something else you wanted to talk about?”(Lucy)

“Yes. You see, I have done something wrong in the past and I’d like to correct it before we fight the bad guy. The problem is I have many responsibilities and I would need someone to replace me during that time.”(Me)

Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.

“Wouldn’t the others fit better?”(Lucy)

That was true. Something just told me that I should trust my six year old little sister more than them.

“No one would fit better than you, but I’ll ask them to support you alongside Fire.”(Me)

I already discussed everything with Fire. He knew what he had to do. After convincing, Lucy came the riskiest part. I let Fire assemble everyone.

“I have something important to tell you guys, or actually only two of you.”(Me)

“Hm?”(Takeshi)

I was looking at Takeshi in that moment. He had no idea what was about to come.

“But before that, I want you to promise me that you won’t come jumping at me and try to kill me.”(Me)

“Wait. Is it what I think it is?”(Hiro)

He wouldn’t be able to kill me anyways. I just wanted to make sure that talking would be enough.

“Spit it out. What can be so bad for me to try something like that?”(Takeshi)

“Ah. Well the thing is…” (Me)

“You still think that he is the cause for your parent’s death.”(Hiro)

I know Hiro tried to help, but it wasn’t the right timing.

“You mean…” (Takeshi)

“Ah. Yeah, I’m kind of the nightmare everyone is talking about.”(Me)

Hiro and Hayate already knew. I told Fire as well, but he hadn’t heard about me before. Same with Lucy. Sakura was shocked, but I knew she wouldn’t act rashly. The only risk was Takeshi’s reaction.

We stared at each other and I had absolutely no idea what to say.

“They would have died anyways and from your story I still don’t think Hikaru did anything wrong.”(Hiro)

Seriously, man read the mood.

“I was hoping that you can tell me how you want me to repent on whatever I did, so we can get over with it.”(Me)

Takeshi still didn’t say anything. Suddenly he took a deep breath turned around and hit the air. While doing so, he used a lot of mana and created a huge attack.

“Fuck!”(Takeshi)

He burned away the little plants; Lucy and I created, while shouting.

“I know we shouldn’t argue with each other… Just don’t let me see you for at least the next year and I should be able to calm down.” (Takeshi)

“Are you fine if I go to jail for the next few years until the battle starts?”(Me)

“I…”(Takeshi)

I just suggested something extreme. Everyone made big eyes when I did. No one thought about the positive aspects of that. Free meal, a lot of free time, no one to think about and I could devote myself to training.

Now after finding my substitute, it was a perfect way to clear Takeshi’s grudge and to finally have some free time.

“If that’s all let’s go.”(Me)

“But the boat isn’t finished yet.”(Hiro)

I didn’t even listen to him and just activated my teleportation stone. This time it worked somehow. Probably, because my mana didn’t get drained. Still I had no energy left afterwards, because teleporting seven people was hard.

We were welcomed as soon as we arrived. No one knew what was going on and I was too exhausted to explain.

“We will stay one night. Prepare boats for us to leave tomorrow morning.”(Me)

Was the last command I gave before I fell asleep. It was already dark when I woke up and found myself in the first normal bed since we left the human continent.

“You awake?”(Hiro)

I only nodded.

“Good. I wanted to talk to you anyways.”(Hiro)

“What about the others?”(Me)

“They are all asleep.”(Hiro)

I received special treatment. The others were thrown together in one room. Because most of them knew Sandra, she went ahead and explained where we were.

“What is it?”(Me)

“I know that from all of us, you are definitely the strongest.”(Hiro)

It was a weird start. I wouldn’t deny that fact though.

“And?”(Me)

“I understand that you are trying to hold us together, but theoretically, you could just dispose of one… you could probably go alone and would still win in the end.”(Hiro)

I got what he wanted to tell me.

“That’s the problem. It’s only probably. And we already failed once.”(Me)

“Without you though.”(Hiro)

“We don’t know. By the way, if you ask me, there is a hidden meaning, why we always hear about search for only gods and not build up an army. It’s probably quality that is needed.”(Me)

“Still did you have to go as far as to say you’d go to prison? Moreover for something you aren’t responsible for?”(Hiro)

“Why? I get free meals every day, no one is there to get on my nerves and I can train all day. Is there a better place?”(Me)

He just realised it.

“It is a dangerous place though. And you would be treated really badly.”(Hiro)

“Nope. I already sent a message to Arthur and he will treat me well.”(Me)

He also just realised that I already planned everything beforehand. Hiro wanted to say something, but I didn’t let him.

“Haha. Give it up and just go to sleep.”(Me)

I ended our talk as sudden as he started it. On the next day, I told everyone about the substitute thing. They were sceptical, but no one dared to say anything against me.

We split up. Takeshi, Sakura, Hayate and Hiro took the boat and headed to the Spirit’s continent to search for the last god. Lucy and Fire stayed behind, because they had to adjust to their new environment. Especially my little sister.

Last but not least was me. I went back to the human continent to go to jail. Luckily, I arrived there safely.

As discussed through my personal messenger Sepp, Arthur awaited me and with a good cover up story, I was locked up in the deepest cell they had.
