Chapter 15 - the sword hero

“Alright the clothes look great on you guys.” Ray stated, impressed with his work. Ray had made 5 coats and shorts made of brown bear fur for the 5 kids, as well as pear of sock like boots for them. The girls seemed ecstatic to be out of those rags at last, whilst Leo and Tom were more amazed that Ray had turned the king of animals in this area into clothes.

Ray had also made clothes for Lilly too, for her he asked her what she would like to wear and so tailored clothes to her request. Ray had no idea what it was, but it was a sort of strapless top that flowed into a skirt that went just above her knees, apparently it was useful for combat as it meant arms weren't restricted when using her bow and the skirt was easy to move in. He also made sock like boots for her that went halfway up her shins and arm warmers that that protected her hands from injury when using her bow.

For himself he had made himself a pair of shorts and a cloak, that used the bears head as the hood, his head would sit in-between the bears jaws, and that flowed down to halfway down his shins, the reason for this? Simply because he thought it was cool. He also finally made a scabbard for his sword. Although the fur was soft to touch cozy to wear, it was surprisingly tough and durable, it was like extremely light weight armour that should offer them all some slight protection.

“Alright, lets continue our journey.”, Ray said.

The kids cheer and they set off once again on their journey.

The group continued journeying through the small woods they were in, when they heard the sound of a horse drawn carriage, Ray put his hand out to signal to the others to stop and hide in the bushes. As Ray alone ventured forwards he realised that they had arrived at one of the many winding roads that he had witnessed when searching for a place to wash, as he looked left, he spotted a group of 5 men, 4 of them were walking whilst the other acted as the coachman. As Ray examined the wagon, he noticed it was a tarp over a cage, but what were they transporting Ray wondered.

Suddenly, the cart stopped, and Ray felt a great pressure of force that made his blood run cold. As he looked right, he noticed a heavily cloaked figure, he was unable to identify the person, but from the height, the small, metal Knight boots and the shoulder length, blonde billowing hair that flowed with the wind out of their hood, but as soon as Ray looked at the figure the pressure had vanished, could he have just ben imagining it? Ray reconned it was a girl or a very young boy, nonetheless it was odd. The men had appeared to be frozen in fear at the sight of the strange figure. Before them.

“What's in the carriage boys?”, a mature yet feminine voice asked. Suddenly a strong gust of wind blew the cloak open, revealing a female knight, clad in a sparkling silver breast plate, metal boots that went up to her knees, a blue skirt and silver arm guards. She had shoulder length blonde hair and blue eyes... well one blue eye, her other was covered by a blue headband that lowered into an eyepatch.

“That's none of your business little missy, I suggest you scram before we add a female knight to our list. I’m sure some rich noble would just love to buy you.”, The man said with confidence in his voice, yet the look on his face suggested otherwise. 3 of the men drew swords, whilst the other 2 pulled out magical wands. They were preparing for a fight. Ray was conflicted, 5 vs 1 was an unfair battle, but they were humans... they had committed such atrocities towards Demi-humans, did she even deserve his help?

“You have Demi-human slaves in there don’t you, I would kindly as that you relinquish them from your custody and set them free... or else.”, the woman said sternly.

Ray was shocked at what he just heard. A human knight was asking these other humans to free Demi-human captives even though it’s within the law to do so? But why would she do that? What was her motive for doing so? Could she... not be an enemy. He had to know? Maybe she could give them some valuable information.

“As if woman, if you're going to get in our way, we won’t hesitate to mess you up. With looks like yours I'm sure someone would buy you even if you were missing a limb or two or had burns all over your body.”, the man said with a grotesque smile.

“O’ great flame I summon...”. The 2 mages chanted.

“FIRE BLAST.”.

As the balls of flames flew at the woman, who hadn’t moved an inch, Ray instinctively moved, he darted out of the clearing, Lilly and the kids shouting his name. The group of men and woman looked at him in shock. Ray out himself in between the blasts and the woman. He hadn’t tried this before, but he knew he could do this. He put both of his hands out and grabbed the air, he then threw his arms upwards, bending the flames and changing their trajectory to match his movements, the flames flew sky wards and exploded in the air.

“Tsk, what did that damned Demi brat just do?”. The front man said looking back at his mages who shrugged.

“Just stay behind me.”, Ray said in human guarding the woman. She put her hand on his shoulder gently, as he looked at her, he saw a beaming smile. This woman was different, she wasn’t pretending, he could tell, he sensed no prejudice in her.

“Thanks for the save, but I’m alright, I’ve got this. Just wait here and let me show you.”, she said in Demi-lang kindly as she walked past Ray.

Ray was shocked.

She raised her hand forward.

“Excalibur!”, she said boldly.

“Y-you're the sword hero?”. Ray looked on in shock... as a storm of mana appeared in front of her and left behind a sword in the earth before her. It was a truly magnificent blade; it had a royal blue handle with a rectangular moon shaped guard with a sapphire streak in the middle. The blade was around a meter long made of pale, sunlike gold, with the words Excalibur etched into them in human.

The woman looked back and smiled, “I’ll explain everything to you once I've delt with these lot. There's something important that I need to tell you... about the darkness that's occurring in the Human lands.”.

“Darkness... does this have to do with the poor treatment of Demi-humans?”, Ray asked frantically.

“Yes, the truth about the events that took place, at least that I know.”.

As the woman walked towards the group, Lilly and the children tentatively came out of hiding

“Ray what's going on, who is that woman...”.

“I don’t know... but she’s not our enemy. In facts, she may be a potential ally.”.

“That sword... could it be Excalibur, the sword heroes' weapon?”.

“Yeah... she’s the sword hero.”.

“Maybe she knows where Alysia is.”. Lilly said eagerly~

“Alysia?”. Ray asked

“Yeah, my childhood friend and rival, the bow hero, though... I haven't seen her for 10 years now, ever since she left for her hero training. She'd be around 20 now.”.

There are 5 heroes in the world of Evoden, sword, bow, axe, spear and shield, they are all born on the same day at the same exact time. They have a unique power which is unlike anything else in the world. Heroes possess mana just like everyone else, however unlike everyone else, their powers don’t manifest itself as magic or skills, it manifests itself as one of the 5 weapons. Heroes in this world are seen as national treasures, rarer than the rarest artifact and at the ages of 10 all the heroes are rounded up for 5 years of intensive training so they can learn how to us their powers correctly.

It was stated that it was the 5 heroes along with a brave adventurer who ridded this world of demons, or so it says in the game's history blog. However, the heroes are all connected, there can never be more than one of each hero at a time, meaning the new cycle doesn’t begin until all of them are dead. Heroes are truly amazing, they’re like the unique monsters of humans, with power alone to take on the previous demon king and his army.

The real question, was what a hero was, let alone the sword hero doing all the way out here, didn’t they know there was a demon on the loose. Surely, they knew right? The tradition of training heroes has remained in this world just in case the demons retuned. It's all stated in the blog.

The encounters were completely one sided, heroes can’t use magic or skills although their weapons which are made of mana, allow them to perform superhuman abilities, in the space of one second of getting into stance. The sword hero was on the opposite end of the carriage, the 5 men fell backwards, completely unconscious.

“What was that.”, Ray said amazed.

“It was combination of my own power and what I observed from sword skill. Although I can’t use them, I can replicate them and create my own attacks that are more powerful.”. the woman said walking towards him.

“But you’re more of a rarity then I am... tell me, how did you manipulate that spell like that.”, She asked, curiosity in her beautiful Sapphire coloured eyes.

“I have the power of the Phoenix; I lost all use of magic and skills however I was granted new abilities all around fire.”.

“I see, so the legends of the Phoenix were true. Very, very interesting.”, the woman said as she began to examine Ray who quickly became flustered.

Ray took a step back.

“You can talk Demi-lang.” ray queried.

“Yeah, an old friend taught me.”, The woman said somewhat sadly.

“WAS THAT THE BOW HERO?”, Lilly asked excitedly.

“I-it was... did you by chance know Alysia.”, the sword hero asked taken aback.

“Yeah, she was my childhood friend... do you know where she is? We haven’t seen her even though she should have returned to the village about 5 years ago.”, Lilly asked excitedly.

“Actually... that relates to what I need to tell you guys, you're the first Demi-humans I've met that were adults, since that happened.”, she said a mix of sadness and anger in her voice.

“What happened... this has to do with the hatred humans have for Demi-humans right? What happened. Why did things change suddenly.” Ray asked desperately.

“we’ll get to that soon, but first, help me get these kids out of here”, she said pointing at the carriage.
