Chapter 18 : Crystal Hope

[It has started.]

Green looked at his watch. The zombies had finished their evolution; it was time for chaos.

"Liu Mei, we've to go now! The zombies may jump out at any time."

Roars echoed, and Zhang Guoling anxiously urged Liu Mei away from the muscular zombie's head.

Liu Mei also heard the terrifying roars; she was scared and teary-eyed. Her gaze remained fixated on the headless Gym Monster as she attempted to get up.

Zhang Guoling helped Liu Mei, and the three quickly walked up the stairs.

As Green had already taken care of the zombies on the upper floors, the three didn't encounter any zombies on their way to the 10th floor,

When they returned, Zhang Yuling went forward anxiously to check her father's body.

"I'm okay, I'm okay." Zhang Guoling chuckled, waving his hand.

(The god of war is with me.)

Throughout the entire rescue mission, not a single zombie crossed his path. The endeavor felt effortless, resembling more of a leisurely stroll than a strenuous task.

What could possibly happen to him? It would be a miracle if he were to meet his end instead.

"Lu Chen really took care of me," Zhang Guoling said, pointing at Green. However, although he looked calm on the surface, his sweaty back told a different story.

Zhang Yuling turned to Green and bowed. "Thank you for taking care of my father."

"It's okay,"

Green waved his hands and looked down the window.

Once more, the small garden transformed into a battlefield. The humans, helpless, could only watch in horror as the zombies and monsters engaged in brutal and bloody conflict.

[It's even more intense today.]

Indeed, the chaos was great on this day, with the arrival of more monsters, and the presence of red-eyed zombies in the horde.

Green witnessed a fierce battle unfold between a red-eyed zombie and a tall monster wielding a giant wooden stick.

The red-eyed undead leaped at the towering monster, aiming to bite off its face, but the tall monster effortlessly slapped it away.

Before the tall monster could revel in victory, a white-eyed zombie lunged forward and bit into its leg.

Angry roars echoed as the tall monster slammed its head into a pulpy mess. However, before it could react further, the red-eyed zombie pounced, tearing open its throat.

In an instant, the towering monster lost its vitality and fell liflessly to the ground.

Despite being a higher-level creature, this monster met a miserable demise in the chaos of battle.

Green watched in silence as the red-eyed zombie fought fiercely, competing with the others to feast on the fallen giant.

He turned his eyes away, ignoring the rest of the mayhem.

[The zombies are becoming stronger.]

Green glanced at the pale faces of Liu Mei and Zhang brother-sister.

Zhang Guoling seemed to have adapted by now and didn't flinch at this scene, only having some stiffness in his face as he looked on.

Green asked, "Miss Liu, what are your plans now?"

The young lady was still in shock and was hesitant in her response. Liu Mei turned to him, opened her mouth but didn't answer.

Zhang Yuling from the stepped out, she felt pity for this survivor. "You can stay here until you figure out something."

She turned to her father and brother, and they did not seem to reject her suggestion. Liu Mei was so happy that she bowed to thank Zhang Yuling in tears.

Indeed, what was a lone woman in the apocalypse to do? At least it was better if she was with others.

Green was not surprised by Zhang Yuling's action. He had observed the Zhang family's behavior for a while and somewhat figured out their standing.

"Alright, I should go," he said, turning around.

[There is nothing more to be done here.]

Suddenly, he remembered something and came to a halt.

Reaching into his pockets, Green retrieved three finger-sized crystals. "Here, take this," he said, moving forward and placing a crystal in the hands of Zhang brother-sister and Liu Mei.

"Now, crush the crystal in your hands," Green instructed without further explanation, leaving the three people with confused expressions.

(What is this?)

They were dumbfounded and didn't know what to do.

Under Zhang Guoling's expectant gaze, the always cheerful Zhang Jiahao was the first to take action. The crystal transformed into white light, and flowed into his body.

"Wow! What's this?" His eyes turned to Green, excitement flashing as he felt newfound strength surging within him.

The two women were shocked, also turning to Green for an explanation.

"Ehm...actually," Zhang Guoling coughed on the side, drawing their attention.

Green fixed his gaze on Zhang Guoling's confident face.

[Does this old guy want to pretend?]

Unaware of the thoughts crossing Green's mind, Zhang Guoling calmly explained to the three shocked individuals.

The faces of the two women wore expressions of bewilderment.

(A crystal can be found in the head of a zombie?)

(Crushing the crystal and absorbing the white light allows you to become stronger?)

They couldn't believe it; this truly shattered their entire worldview and understanding of reality.

(Why does this feel like a cheap online novel?)

Zhang Jiahao, however, reacted differently. As a youth who had frequently indulged in online literature, his mind swiftly embraced the reality before him.

(So, killing zombies means becoming stronger? Then what are we doing here? We should be outside getting crystals.)

"Brother Lu, we should immediately go and kill zombies!" Zhang Jiahao's face beamed with excitement as he urged Green to join him in hunting down zombies.

Green was amazed by this reaction. Which normal person would think like this? Unless you are a mad person.

(Of course, that doesn't include me.)

Although zombies seemed harmless to him now, requiring only a single stroke from his sword, Green never allowed himself to be careless facing them.

A brief moment of oversight, and the tide could change in an instant. With just a small scratch, he would become 'Green of the horde.'

The sole reason he even dared set foot outside his house was because he was not an ordinary person.

He had gone to the dungeon, faced the terrible monsters, leveled up and become stronger. But even then, he didn't dare to underestimate the zombies.

(This kid is really courageous.)

Bù zhī zhě wú wèi, the ancients didn't deceive me.

[The ignorant are fearless,] Green silently shook his head.

"Jiahao! What are you saying?" Zhang Yuling reacted first, angrily glaring at Zhang Jiahao until his shoulders sank and all the excitement disappeared.

On the side, another voice suddenly emerged.

"Although going out to kill zombies may be dangerous, Jiahao is right," Zhang Guoling said. He fell silent after uttering these words, and his face stiffened.

(The old world is gone.)

He realized this fact now; it had already been a month, and the authorities were nowhere to be seen. The situation was completely out of control.

The whole earth had probably gone to hell, and the only way to safeguard themselves is by becoming stronger.

(There is no other choice.)

They have to go out, fight zombies, obtain crystals, and become stronger. If they only knew to hide without doing anything, they would likely starve before the zombies could reach them.

Surprised, Zhang Yuling turned to him, yet he remained silent.

"Crush the crystal in your hands first, Yuling," he motioned toward her hand.

Finally remembering the mysterious crystal, Zhang Yuling, under Green's gaze, rubbed it in her hand and the white light flew into her body.

Liu Mei also crushed the crystal, and the white light emanated from it, slowly sinking into her body.

[Everyone can use crystals.]

Green wore a blank expression, thoughts racing through his mind.

[There should be people who have figured out this thing, right?]

He pondered the likelihood that the government and army were aware of the situation. With their powerful weapons, even if many people turned into zombies, the army should be capable of restoring some order in their immediate surroundings.

Though uncertain why the authorities hadn't responded more intensely, Green believed they wouldn't simply vanish.

Perhaps other individuals had also uncovered this secret. Green harbored a quiet hope for the future.

People could grow stronger with the power of crystals. If there were enough individuals hunting down zombies, the current situation would change.

The world, filled with zombies and monsters, proved too depressing for Green.

[Maybe the order in Xincheng will be restored one day.]

But to see that day, he would have to survive first.

Although he had enough supplies for now, they weren't infinite and would eventually run out.

Suddenly, a thought struck Green.

[There should be supplies in the building.]

Many people had been zombified, and he didn't think they would need any food now.

[I should gather more supplies.]

Green observed Liu Mei's distressed figure, and he could somehow piece together what had happened to this young lady.

[But, it doesn't really matter now.]

[She should live well for now.]

[That's all any of us can do.]

In this damn apocalypse, everyone was like a helpless dog; swept along by the unforgiving currents of world changing events.

Green looked away and walked to the door, it was time to go home. While he was on his way, Liu Mei cried behind him.

"Thank you! Thank you, Mr. Lu."

Green's eyes froze, and he halted at the door.

Without turning around, he waved his hand and walked out of the house.

Even after the door was locked, the sound of Liu Mei crying lingered in the air.

Surveying the hallways filled with zombie bodies, Green sighed and made his way to his house.
