Chapter 10 : Zhang family and Chaos

Chapter 10 : Zhang family and Chaos

The zombies down there were causing total chaos!

From what Green had previously observed, the zombies and monsters were like water and oil; mostly indifferent towards each other's existences.

But now, the zombies broke this aloof relationship; they seemed to have gone completely crazy.

Green witnessed three zombies encircle a goblin.

One zombie bit its neck, another its thighs, and one targeted its hands.

The goblin struggled hard but couldn't escape, eventually succumbing to the undead horde.

The zombies didn't stop and immediately started feasting on its corpse.

Seeing the bloody scene made Green feel disgusted.

Glancing to his side, Zhang Yuling and the teenage boy had pale faces and looked frightened.

The middle aged man maintained a stiff look, but the large beads of sweat on his forehead and shaking hands betrayed his true feelings.

Green realized that no regular person could handle such a brutal scene.

He turned his head to look down.

A small zombie jumped at a lion-like feline monster that was as big as a horse and was easily slapped away by its large paws.

The monster proudly shook its red mane and walked forward lazily.

Without giving up, the short zombie jumped up with a growl.

Along with three other undead, the short zombie surrounded the lion-like monster.

The red-maned lion monster took some time to swat away the annoying zombies but was in distress as even more zombies rushed at it.

"Roooooaaar!!!"

Mayhem broke out with loud roars and fighting sounds, turning the little garden into a chaotic battlefield.

Green maintained a calm face, but he was shocked by this sudden change, his eyebrows twitching as he watched.

The zombies seemed to have taken some special drug, fighting ferociously against the monsters.

However, the monsters were not easy to bully either and fought back harder.

A tall monster used its big club to flatten several zombies, while another giant, ant-like monster crushed a zombie between its mandibles.

The ant-like monster waved its sickle shaped limbs and stabbed several zombies in the head.

There were fewer monsters than zombies, but each individual beast was stronger than a single zombie.

Therefore, the fighting was never one sided; either side could overwhelm the other, and both sides incurred significant losses as the battle continued.

"Oh! Look! Look at the stairs!" Zhang Yuling shouted in shock.

Green turned his head to the staircase in another building.

He heard a quiet gasp from the middle-aged man and a yell from the young man.

Green noticed many zombies rushing down the stairs.

The narrow staircase was crowded, causing zombies to get trampled as more came from behind.

[That's why the zombies aren't banging on the doors]

Green realised that they had left to join the battle.

However, the gate in Green's building was locked, and the zombies were destined not to join in on all the fun.

Green could only watch the new situation unfold with confusion.

What was happening?

Green stared into space and stood dazed for a long time.

[This is not bad actually]

Indeed, the zombies and monsters seemed to have forgotten about the humans and went at each other's throats.

"Hello, thank you so much for saving us," he heard a soft voice from his side, startling him awake from his daze, and he turned to respond.

Zhang Yuling was a pretty woman with a small almond-shaped face and big eyes. She wore a dirty white T-shirt, and her face was smeared with dirt and tear stains.

Seeing the untidy Zhang Yuling with messy hair, Green couldn't help but feel confused for a while.

Was this the same lady who had greeted him in the hallways just a few weeks ago?

Back then, she wore a blue dress that he thought made her look very lovely.

The apocalypse had not been kind to her.

Well, at least she was alive, which was better than most; many unfortunate people had either become zombies or monster food.

"It's okay," Green nodded with a smile.

"Is the young man a resident in the building?" asked the middle-aged man with a rough voice.

He also had dirty clothes, and the sweat on his forehead was still visible. But Green felt that the middle aged man with a square face had a heroic expression between his brows.

"I'm from room 1013," Green nodded, responding to the middle-aged man.

Green noticed the resemblance between Zhang Yuling and this middle aged man.

[He must be her father, right?]

"We are on the same floor!" the young man chimed in, surprised. Green looked at the teenager and was stunned for a moment.

Indeed, he didn't go out much and had become like a hermit for the last few months.

He became paranoid that the apocalypse would come at any time, so he stayed behind closed doors.

It's possible that many people on the same floor didn't even know he lived here.

Green noticed that the boy resembled the middle-aged man very much; he should be his son and Zhang Yuling's brother.

An awkward silence filled the room, broken occasionally by roars from below.

"Your name is Lu Chen, right? Do you remember me? We've talked in the corridors," Zhang Yuling, with a good memory, recalled his name. She held her head and asked.

Hearing her call his name, Green was surprised.

He found it unusual that she knew his name, since they had only interacted a few times. Of course, he also remembered her name, so maybe it wasn't so unusual after all .

"Yes, Miss Yuling and I talked in the building hallways," Green admitted.

Another long silence filled the room after he finished his sentence.

"I am their father, Zhang Guoling," the middle-aged man broke the awkward silence and reached out with his hands. Green fumbled with the sword and reached out to grab the outstretched hand.

"Lu Chen, pleased to meet you," he felt a firm hand squeeze his hand.

[What a firm handshake.]

Green was surprised by the middle-aged man's rough action but didn't say anything.

"I'm Zhang Jiahao, thanks for helping us, big brother!" Zhang Jiahao excitedly introduced himself and thanked him with a bright smile.

His clothes were dirty and torn, but this didn't take away from his bright personality. Green was startled by his bright smile and nodded in acknowledgment.

"Yes, sorry for the trouble we have caused you. You have saved us all this time," the middle-aged man gave him a deep bow after he finished speaking.

"No trouble, not trouble," Green shook his head, waved his hands, and dodged the older man's bow.

Zhang Guoling was stunned; he straightened his back and took a deep look into Green's eyes. Green felt uncomfortable for a while, but Zhang Guoling eventually retracted his gaze and looked at his son and daughter.

"Really, thank you." With a smile on his simple square face, he thanked him once again.

The sound of fighting outside didn't seem to stop at any moment. Green stood in the middle of the room and looked around.

Everything is normal. Green wondered how the three survived for so long; had they also stockpiled supplies?

Green's wondering eyes suddenly met Zhang Jiahao's curious gaze. Not just him, looking at the father and daughter, they were also looking at him.

Was there something on his face?

Wait, no! He followed their gaze and understood immediately. They were looking at his armor and sword.

Green was disappointed that it wasn't his face that had become more handsome after performing such a heroic deed.

He opened his mouth to explain.

"I have a hobby of collecting ancient weapons," Green brought the sword out for them to take a look. A small lie that seems to be acceptable.

Zhang Jiahao came closer to take a look with curious eyes, and Zhang Guoling also had an interested expression on his face.

Zhang Yuling squinted her eyes and didn't say anything.

When Zhang Jiahao opened his mouth, it was like a machine gun.

"Big brother Lu Chen, this armor is incredible!" Zhang Jiahao exclaimed, touching the hard leather armor.

"Yes, very effective," Green nodded.

"And this sword, it looks very sharp?" Zhang Jiahao turned his eyes.

"Yes, the sword is sharp," Green said, with a sudden thought.

Indeed, the short-sword that came with the warrior class was very sharp and did not seem to dull after so many uses. He couldn't explain this and threw the mystery to the "it's all magic" hole.

"Awesome! Can you still find these kinds of armor and swords these days?" Zhang Jiahao asked curiously.

"You can find replicas, but authentic ones have to be ordered specifically," Green was unsure about such topics and gave out this answer.

"Interesting! How heavy is this armor, and could you move easily while wearing it?" Zhang Jiahao babbled on.

"It's a bit heavy, but I have adapted to the weight," Green answered after a pause.

This was a lie, of course; the leather armor from the equipment store was like an extra piece of clothing. But there was no need to say that here.

"Interesting! Could you dance wearing it?" Zhang Jiahao blurted out another question.

"I'm not sure...maybe?" Green was stunned by this question, and he didn't know what to say.

"Got it! And this sword, does it have a special name? Like Excalibur or Frostmourne?" Zhang Jiahao excitedly asked again, like an endless questions machine, continuing to stump him even further.

"The sword doesn't have a name," Green felt his head become muddled with each additional question.

Zhang Guoling on the side smiled, listening carefully and did not seem like he would help him at any time. In fact, it looked like he had questions of his own and was patiently nodding his head from time to time while biding his time.

Zhang Yuling squinted her eyes, looking at the scene. She rubbed her sprained ankles while hissing in pain from time to time.

Green looked blankly at the excited face of Zhang Jiahao and was dumbfounded.

"Jiahao, enough!" Zhang Yuling's voice finally rose, saving him from the predicament.

Zhang Jiahao had his mouth freeze in the middle of a sentence; he pressed his lips dejectedly and looked at him with his big pitiful eyes.

[Hey, stop! Don't look at me like that. It's not my fault.]

Green avoided his eyes.

The sound of battle echoed outside, and the zombies seemed to be preoccupied.

Green felt silence envelop the room again, and he quickly excused himself.

The family of three followed him to the door in silence.

Father Zhang took the lead and gave a bow of thanks, followed by Zhang Yuling and Zhang Jiahao.

________

When he saw the door close behind him, Green's eyes narrowed; it seemed like he didn't save the wrong people.

It is not uncommon for kindness to be repaid by evil. Even if he believed the internet stuff was nonsense, all fiction did stem from actual reality. Otherwise, how could there be so many white-eyed wolves in society?

However, there was one thing, Green wiped the sweat from his forehead, and his expression soured.

[Why did talking to that kid Jiahao seem more difficult than fighting zombies?]

Green looked around the empty building hallways, littered with fallen zombies and the ground dyed dark with red blood.

Sure enough, he couldn't see a single zombie.

He still didn't know what had made the zombies so mad to fight it out with the monsters.

After thinking about it for a long time, he only had a single idea.

[Could it be the rain?]

Indeed, the rain was the only variable he could think of.

While pondering this question, he walked past the bald zombie, and a white flash suddenly drew his attention.

Green stopped and squinted his eyes.

There was something in the split head of the bald zombie.

[What is that?]

Green bent down and fished out a small white crystal with a piece of cloth.

Hearing the loud roars echoing, Green stuffed the piece of cloth into his pockets and briskly walked to his house.
