Chapter 15 : The Eighth Floor Dilemma

Chapter 15 : The Eighth Floor Dilemma

Green carefully hid behind the wall and peered out; thankfully, it wasn't a zombie that had learned how to knock, but some familiar faces.

He saw people standing before his door, knocking anxiously while talking in hushed tones.

The Zhang family of three. No, only two. Zhang Guoling and Zhang Yuling.

Green frowned, he didn't know why they were here. He stepped forward.

"Hey"

His steps had begun to become soft from all the creeping around he did in the dungeon, and the two did not hear a thing before he said something.

The Zhang father-daughter duo were startled and jumped to turn their heads.

Green's eyebrows twitched at their panicked looks, and he stepped forward in apology.

"Sorry, did I startle you? " His eyes still alert as he looked at them.

Zhang Guoling was the first to recover, he looked at Green and nodded. "Lu Chen, it's okay."

Zhang Yuling didn't answer "Mr. Lu, we have been knocking on your door for a long time. Where ha..."

Before she said could finish her sentence, she caught sight of his blood stained sword, and her expression changed.

She gasped and involuntarily took a step back.

Green observed her alarmed reaction and discreetly concealed the blood stained sword. "Just went out to take care of some business."

(What?)

Zhang Yuling was rendered speechless by his response. What business is there to do at this time in the apocalypse? The words formed in her heart, but she couldn't bring them out.

Zhang Guoling looked at his daughter's expression, and he interrupted.

"Mr. Lu, there is a situation, we came to hear your opinion."

His eyes were involuntarily drawn to the leather armor and the numerous battle scars on its' surface.

Zhang Guoling's eyes were confused for a moment.

Who is this person exactly? The armor is obviously used. And it seems like it had received some heavy blows, it couldn't be from some sort of play sword fight.

Zhang Guoling had also seen the sword that Green tried to hide, and he came up with some ideas in his head.

(This person is not simple)

Green was unsure and asked, "My opinion?"

This time before Zhang Guoling could answer, Zhang Yuling's voice rose in anxiety.

"You need to come with us to check yourself." She looked around fearfully, like a zombie would jump out of some hidden corner at any moment.

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Green was unsure, but he knew that the Zhang family trio were not bad people. At least from what he had seen so far.

"Lead the way"

Green agreed simply. Zhang Guoling raised his eyebrows, and Zhang Yuling's expression that was tense was relieved for a while.

The three walked forward together, avoiding the bodies on the ground and they reached the Zhang family door in no time.

Zhang Jiahao seemed to have been anxiously waiting for their arrival, and he quickly opened the door.

"Big brother Lu!" Zhang Jiahao was still cheerful and greeted him as he entered the house.

Green nodded, turned his head to look at Zhang Guoling and asked, "What's the problem?"

Zhang Guoling was quiet, and he silently walked towards the toilet. Green was unsure, but he followed him in.

Zhang Guoling stepped on the toilet seat and motioned him to follow suit.

Green was already confused by this point, but when he stepped closer to the bathroom window, he could hear the faint echo of sobbing and muffled cries for help.

Zhang Guoling went down and gave him the whole place. Green with a stiff face stepped up and looked out the small window.

The building design was such that he could see the verandas of some of the units from the toilet window.

When he looked out, he saw a startling scene.

A woman was desperately leaning against the door on one of the verandas, Behind the door, there seemed to be a strong force attempting to prey it open. The woman in red pressed against the door and cried in fear.

Green's eyes turned serious.

[Another survivor!... But, maybe not for long]

[This should be the eighth floor]

Green diverted his attention from the dire situation of the woman. He observed an expectant look on Zhang Yuling's face, and next to her Zhang Guoling maintained a serious expression.

Zhang Jiahao wore a worried expression and broke the silence to explain.

"That's Liu Mei, she lives on the eighth floor, room 807."

This piece of information came out of nowhere, did Zhang Jiahao know that woman?

Zhang Yuling and Zhang Guoling turned their heads in surprise, and Zhang Jiahao turned away in distress.

(That pretty older sister is always walking around the community garden.)

Green was secretly amused by the kid and turned to face Zhang Guoling.

"So you wish to rescue this woman, Liu Mei?" He asked without any emotion visible in his tone.

Zhang Guoling's face turned red, and he didn't answer. Zhang Yuling wanted to open her mouth, but she couldn't in the end.

Green studied their expressions. In fact, he had already made a choice in his mind.

Humans are inherently social creatures.

He recalled this sentence from a book he had read before.

Throughout the last month of the apocalypse, Green had not seen a single survivor. Though he was managing well with enough food and water, the prolonged isolation was slowly affecting him.

Adding to the fact that he had to face monsters in the dungeon every night, he didn't know how long it would take before he would snap.

That's why he jumped out to save the Zhang family when he saw them surrounded by zombies.

The case with this survivor on the eighth floor was no different.

However, he didn't want to give off the impression that he could be influenced by others easily.

Green looked at his watch and stayed silent for a second. The Zhang family of three were like ostriches with their heads down.

Indeed, it was challenging to ask the benefactor who had just saved their lives a day ago to undertake such a difficult task.

They didn't have any personal ties to begin with; they were even indebted to him, but now they threw such a difficult problem onto his lap.

His decision would ultimately determine the life or death of the woman on the eighth floor.

Zhang Guoling was too ashamed to raise his head.

"Okay!"

Green agreed and walked forward, out of the bathroom.

This quick, one word answer surprised the Zhang family. They raised their heads and watched as Green walked away without turning back.

Zhang Guoling suddenly jumped and followed behind, carrying a wooden stick with a determined look on his face.

Green felt the presence behind him, he turned around and observed Zhang Guoling's determined expression, seemingly ready to walk on a road of knives and swim through a sea of fire.

[Does this old guy want to join in the fun?]

"I will go alone." Green's eyes turned serious as he immediately rejected this assistance.

Zhang Guoling heard this, and his face froze before turning red. "Young man! Don't look down on my old bones. I used to be a policeman, I won't slow you down."

Green stared blankly at him.

"I can also watch your back for any opponents in the dark." Zhang Guoling added hastily, before he could open his mouth.

Green was speechless at his reaction.

He understood that two are sometimes not better than one.

For anyone who has played games, they know well that tough opponents are not to be feared. However, if there was another pig-like teammate next to them, they should absolutely be mortified.

If Green took such a pig-like teammate out to hunt zombies, then he wouldn't even know how he died.

Although he admired the middle aged man's courage, he wasn't assured enough to leave him his back.

He wanted to do a heroic deed, not go into a perilous journey where 8 of 9 lives would be lost.

Green pat his chest and assured the middle aged man that he could handle the zombies alone.

However, Zhang Guoling was like a stubborn donkey, refusing to listen even when his daughter chimed in to stop him.

Green was unsure if the girl would survive at this rate.

He could only stop persuading and allowed Zhang Guoling to come along.

"Listen, stay close to the wall, and don't come out before I say so, okay?" Green instructed firmly.

"Okay!" Zhang Guoling nodded and promised to follow his lead.

Zhang Yuling had a fearful face but didn't speak under the winking of her father.

Green took another look at Zhang Guoling' s resolute expression. While unsure about his ability to handle zombies, he thought that his moral character was commendable.

The two hurried out of the house and descended the stairs. Green hugged the wall tightly upon reaching the 9th floor.

Peering around the wall, four zombies came into view.

Green looked behind him, and Zhang Guoling was actually mimicking his actions and also pressed his body against the wall. He had a serious face and looked around nervously.

[Good!]

Green nodded; this one didn't seem like a pig teammate. He eyed Zhang Guoling and motioned for him to be quiet.

Zhang Guoling stiffly nodded in agreement.
