Day 33
Light was out at last, and the dark clouds parted to reveal the bright sun. Green opened the curtains and took a look down.
The zombies were moving around sluggishly. Some stood still, as if in a deep trance.
The parking lot's ground was wet, and the scattered garbage made the whole place seem like it wasn't inhabited just over a month ago.
Looking at the zombies' weakened figures, Green's eyes filled with a glint. The zombies were affected by the weird rain, as he had predicted.
[Just like yesterday]
But he wouldn't be tricked by their weakened state like he was before. After some time, the slow zombies would go ballistic and start another chaotic battle with the monsters.
Green just did not know when that would be, but he had some guesses. Now he only needed to wait patiently and observe the zombies to prove his hypotheses. Green felt like he was a scientist doing some experiments.
He closed the curtains and walked to the kitchen. He opened a bag of sausages and turned on the heat. He needed some meat in his body for his next actions.
Green looked at the cooked sausage and opened a can of beer to go along with it. He opened his mouth and ate quickly.
"Burrrp!"
[That was good]
In the apocalypse, having a good meal was rare. Now, with the need to ration food, Green found that each simple meal tasted better than they did before the end times.
He finished eating and checked the time.
[Still good]
He reached out, and a short sword appeared in his hand. The leather armor was also summoned.
Green looked anxiously at the small hole that had formed on the armor and checked its status.
[ Level 1 Armor
Item bonus
Defense: + 10
Durability: 190/200 ]
Indeed, the durability had fallen as he had expected, but looking at the still large number, he knew that the armor would still perform its duty for a long time.
He put on the leather armor and gripped the sword in his hand tighter. He looked at the door, and his face grew serious.
[Haa! Let's do it]
Green gave himself a small cheer and pushed open the door.
The building hallways still had the same decayed smell in the air. But at least, there were no zombies moving around on the tenth floor.
The chilling silence that hovered made for a gritty reminder to Green that the apocalypse had truly taken down everything.
Looking at the corpses of the zombies laying around, Green's expression changed.
The foul smell they released drifted in the air, making him want to vomit all the food he just ate.
Green looked at the terrible conditions of the corpses, and he wondered if it was really okay to leave the corpses just laying around.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
He was secretly anxious about a hypothetical plague that might actually break out because of all these zombie remains.
Green had read that corpses which weren't buried in ancient battles would spread disease to the remaining soldiers, and numerous people would die after a major battle, more so than the actual number of people killed in battle.
Many kingdoms in the past were awesome in waging wars and went around conquering other places, but finally in the end, they knelt down before the true conquerors; tiny microorganism they couldn't even see with their bare eyes.
Even Gengis Khan, the ancient warlord of the East, used the corpses of dead soldiers to infect and massacre whole cities.
Green recalled some of the history knowledge from his university days. He was secretly astonished that he had not yet returned all the teacher's knowledge.
He avoided all the zombie corpses and walked towards the stairs.
Actually, he don't dare think about the zombies much.
The fact that in the end, each person laying there on that cold, hard ground was alive just over a month ago.
His mind kept avoiding the issue, and he had to look for other distracting thoughts to occupy himself.
Looking down the corridors, he remembered the Zhang family of three.
[Were they doing all right?]
After he rescued them yesterday, he was too busy with all the dungeon business and forgot all about them.
He can't be blamed, though. When someone risks their life every night, playing a life or death game with monsters, their attention is bound to be diverted.
They should be okay right?
The Zhang family of three must have obtained some food yesterday, food that may last them another two, three days.
He really didn't know how other survivors were doing in this situation.
Green wanted to make a pit stop to them before he began hunting down the zombies, but after looking down at his watch, he gave up this thought.
[We still have work to do]
Green cautiously walked up the stairs and pressed his body against the wall. Peeking out, he spotted a number of zombies walking around the 11th floor.
Their movements were extra sluggish, and they stumbled around without much strength.
[Yes, good!]
This was what Green was hoping for.
He had thought about the zombies' various strange behaviors yesterday and became certain about his speculation. The zombies would be in a sort of weakened state before they could evolve to a higher rank.
[Like the snake shedding its skin]
And like the snake, they would be vulnerable at that time, and this is where he would come in, of course. He would strike mercilessly when they were on their weakest moments.
However, he didn't know exactly when they would be able to successfully evolve, but he still couldn't give up the opportunity to get an edge on them right now.
He imagined himself jumping out from nowhere and catching off the weak zombies and grinned.
[Hey zombies, here I am!]
Green was not a newbie and never dared dream of actually jumping out to announce his presence to the enemy.
Even if the zombies were at their weakened state, a hundred ants could take down an elephant; why wouldn't a hundred sluggish zombies take him down?
No, he was going to use a secret method. A method that had never failed him before.
The forbidden skill, [luring godly technique].
However, there were no stones laying around here unlike the dungeon, so he improvised.
Green took his sword and lightly tapped against the metal railing, hoping to draw the attention of a nearby zombie.
The zombies were very auditory creatures, as he had learned. The trick worked, and a short zombie nearby walked forward towards the noise.
[Aha, gotcha!]
Green jumped out from his hiding spot and caught the zombie from behind, decapitating it with a single strike.
Avoiding the blood, he went forward and pried open its head.
[Too bad]
Green shook his head in disappointment. The zombie didn't have a crystal in its head.
Green felt like he would not be lucky today, but he was not discouraged. He stood up and tried again.
"Ping! Ping!"
The muffled noise of metal on metal arose again in the hallways. This time a female zombie stumbled forward.
Green could see that her eyes were white. In the same way, Green jumped from behind and finished it off with one hit.
[Phewww~]
Hope was restored at last! This zombie had a crystal in its head.
《 Exp gained +5 》
Looking at the Exp coming in, Green smiled. He stepped forward and looked out.
Unfortunately, he couldn't continue relying on his special method as the remaining zombies were too far away.
The drawing method could only work for nearby enemies after all.
Green held a serious expression and counted the number of zombies that remained on the 11th floor.
[Just three more]
It seemed like most zombies had rushed downstairs to join the battle yesterday, and only a few remained.
[Okay, we can do this!]
Green cheered himself on and jumped out from hiding.
Without making a sound, his feet shuffled forward, bringing him to a young male zombie. The zombie's head full of hair was very distinct. It stumbled around, showing him its back.
Green aimed for its neck and shot his sword forward.
[ what!]
Unfortunately, he could only cut a portion of its head as it had tilted its head at the last moment. Did this zombie achieve ultra instinct?
"Arggghh!"
Green didn't know if the zombie had reached some sort of godly state, but he didn't care. He jumped up and chopped off its head.
The noise was not much, but for the zombies, it might as well have been like a bomb going off next to their ears. They turned their heads and pounced on him.
Still, they were very sluggish, and Green jumped away with ease. He used a few steps to move around a female zombie and chopped at its head.
Feeling the resistance from the sword, he squatted immediately and ducked the black nails of the zombie. He kicked the female zombie on the chest and withdrew the lodged sword from its shoulder.
He sidestepped with agility and dodged the rushing middle aged woman, this zombie was especially vicious and went for his neck.
But its movements were too exaggerated. Green sidestepped and used its stagger to decapitate it in one go. He turned to the female zombie and finished the job. Its head rolled forward, its body falling in place.
Stamina 140/150
Green turned to his status, and his eyes widened. The stamina had decreased! He didn't realize yesterday, but the stamina would decrease after every fight with the zombies.
It was only two point each time, negligible really, but this was new information.
Although he couldn't see any titles above the zombies, they were very much like the monsters in the dungeons.
They even gave out experience.
[Except there was no gold]
Green shooed away the distracting thoughts and bent down to harvest his reward.
Green's eyes flashed in happiness.
Two of the zombies out of the three actually had crystals in their heads. Green crushed the crystals between his hands, and the white light floated into his body.
《 Exp gained +5 》
《 Exp gained +5 》
Green had a swift pace as he didn't waste another second. He rushed towards the 12th floor.
The building had only 13 floors, and there were no zombies on the 10th floor where he was, the 11th floor was now cleared, he wanted to clean up the 12th and 13th floors next.
