Chapter 16 : Zhang Guoling's Three Questions

Chapter 16 : Zhang Guoling's Three Questions

Zhang Guoling observed the young man's cautious actions, and he was even more certain that they had made the right decision to involve him.

Although he didn't know what this person did before the apocalypse, Zhang Guoling didn't believe he was just your average, everyday youth.

(Maybe he worked in a government agency, like special forces or something?)

Regarding what his daughter said about him, implying he might just be another regular guy working as a delivery man; Zhang Guoling scoffed and shook his head at this laughable suggestion.

(What type of delivery man is this?)

(Which delivery man can be so awesome against the zombies?)

Still, even though Zhang Guoling had experienced life and had a thick face, he couldn't just shamelessly send this person to rescue the survivor alone.

As a former policeman, Zhang Guoling felt like he should contribute in the mission to the 8th floor.

Moreover, he had witnessed this person's capabilities in dispatching zombies, and he was somewhat filled with a surge of courage to face the undead head on.

____________

[Four zombies, not bad]]

Green was not a witch and couldn't read Zhang Guoling's thoughts. After he saw Zhang Guoling cooperating well, he let go of his worries and turned around to face the zombies.

Of course to deal with the undead he used the old ways.

Green took out his sword and tapped it lightly against the metal railing.

"Clink! Clink!"

The sound was barely audible but a nearby zombie was easily lured over by it.

[Such a big guy!]

The approaching undead was exceptionally tall, and Green couldn't help but imagine it playing basketball with Yao Ming.

Although its height was intimidating, this zombie would at most correspond to a level 2 monster, and Green was not afraid.

He backed off, and waited patiently for the zombie to walk past, as he hid behind the wall, he held his breath, closely following its path with his eyes.

After it passed the threshold, Green pounced, and his sword flashed like lightning, decapitating the tall zombie in one swift motion.

That was all it took; this zombie was just a low level creature and a single strike to the neck would do.

Green nervously peered out from behind the wall to check if the zombies were alerted.

Thankfully, they weren't.

[Pheww~]

Although he found this zombie weak, he didn't want to attract all the undead on the 9th floor. Plus, he had another survivor with him.

Even if he could escape safely, he didn't know if Zhang Guoling could do the same if the zombies were alerted.

Green didn't waste time and crouched down next to the tall zombie. Using his sword, he pierced through its head. Wearing his white surgical gloves, he wasn't worried about the blood.

The zombie's head, when cut open, was not like a normal person's. The brain was pitch black, shrunken like a sponge without water, and there was a nasty yellow liquid that filled the entire head.

The red blood and yellow liquid mixed together in the head, creating a gruesome mixture that looked like something out of a horror movie.

When Green saw this thing for the first time the other day, he almost vomited.

Prying its head open, he looked inside the revolting zombie head.

He was disappointed and shook his head, there was no crystal inside.

Green clicked his tongue in annoyance; this tall zombie was no good. It seemed like big is not always better.

From the sideline, Zhang Guoling bore witness to the entire process of luring, hiding, decapitating, and then the gruesome scene that followed afterwards.

He was tense at the start, during the prolonged drawing out and the exhilarating hiding. Then came the shock of the decapitation. When the head hit the ground, Zhang Guoling's jaw almost dropped.

It felt as if he had just watched a great play unfolding before his eyes.

The practiced way of zombie eradication was almost like a seamless fluid motion, done continuously without stopping. Like a piece of music or a flowing river. However, Zhang Guoling couldn't appreciate the beautiful workmanship displayed here.

His face turned white, and his eyes froze as Green bent down and began cutting open the zombie's head.

Zhang Guoling had witnessed numerous horrific incidents throughout his lengthy career: domestic disputes, gruesome crime scenes, human trafficking, gang violence, drug related crimes....

The list goes on and on, as a seasoned officer of the law, he believed that he had seen it all.

However, when he caught sight of Green picking at a zombie's brain, he suddenly froze in place.

Zhang Guoling watched blankly as Green cursed and got up after opening up the zombie's brain.

(What is happening right now?)

He suddenly found himself asking the three fundamental questions of life.

Who am I,

where am I,

And what am I doing here?

_________

Green didn't have eyes at the back of his head and failed to notice the change in Zhang Guoling's expression. He stood up and shifted his focus to watch for zombies. Although he was unlucky with the first try, he refused to give up.

Green tapped against the railing, luring another undead. A female zombie in a blood smeared white dress stumbled forward, drawn by the noise.

At the moment, Green truely embraced feminism, advocating not only for equal rights but also delivering equal left kicks to the heads of zombies, regardless of gender.

He dashed forward and savagely kicked down the female zombie in the white dress. Swiftly, without waiting for it to rise, he stabbed it through the neck and severed its head.

Green flicked his sword to remove the traces of zombie blood and bent down to dissect the undead's brain.

Suddenly, he had a strange thought; breaking open zombie head was alot like cutting open a cool watermelon during summer. The watermelon could either be sweet or not; you would only know once you open it up to check.

Green shook his head; regrettably, this particular watermelon wasn't sweet.

(A psychopath! This was undoubtedly a psychopath!)

Zhang Guoling suddenly regretted rushing to judge this person's nature.

His lips quivered, and his hands shook slightly as the gruesome act of head splitting unfolded once again.

A chill ran down Zhang Guoling's spine when he noticed Green glancing at him, his face appearing displeased. Subconsciously, Zhang Guoling tightened his grip on his wooden stick.

Green felt he was spending too much time on this zombie luring method; they had to reach the girl before the zombies did. Leaning towards Zhang Guoling, he whispered, "I'll jump out and take care of the other two."

When Green leaned close and whispered, Zhang Guoling felt as if his soul was about to escape from his body. He nodded nervously without uttering a single word.

Not hearing a reply, Green turned to look at Zhang Guoling.

[Why is he suddenly nervous?]

[Maybe he is afraid I can't handle the zombies?]

Leaning forward again, Green reassured him, "Don't worry; the zombies are not that tough."

Without waiting for a reply, he gripped his sword and observed the only remaining zombies; a thin, bamboo like zombie with long hair and a fat zombie in shorts.

Confident in his ability to handle the fat-thin duo, Green rushed out with a few large steps and kicked the nearest one.

The fatty, resembling a rolling barrel, tumbled away. Green was not distracted by the obvious [Distraction technique] employed by the fat zombie. Undeterred, he swiftly cut down the thin, bamboo like zombie with long hair.

The fatty couldn't roll his way out of a beheading either, and Green cleared the 9th floor in this peculiar manner.

Holding the two crystals, he was happy and smiled.

Zhang Guoling slowly stumbled out of hiding and stared blankly as Green bent over next to a fat zombie with a grin on his face.

He really didn't understand; this young man looked normal earlier, but now his behavior was like that of a mental hospital patient.

Zhang Guoling felt like he had lost 10 years of life in this one trip; he just wanted to go and lay down somewhere.

Green noticed Zhang Guoling's listless face and suddenly thought of something. He took one of the crystals and handed it to him.

Zhang Guoling was surprised by his actions and looked at the crystal in Green's hand, confused. Before Zhang Guoling could say anything, the crystal was pushed into his palm, and Green explained from the side,

"Crash it between your fingers like this."

Green clenched his fist in demonstration, and as expected, the crystal burst into white light that flowed into his body.

Zhang Guoling was dumbfounded when he saw this magical scene.

(What was this, ghosts and demons? Illusion?)

Zhang Guoling couldn't understand what he just witnessed.

Under Green's intense gaze, he nervously clenched his fists.

The crystal crushed gently; the white light emerged again, and this time some of the white light drifted off into the atmosphere.

Observing the white light float into his body, Zhang Guoling was amazed.

(What!)

Suddenly, his face changed; he could actually feel a sort of strength rising up in his body.

Green saw this change, and his eyebrows shot up.

[So others can also use crystals!]

But there was a particular thing. When Zhang Guoling crushed the crystal, there seemed to be a pulling force that took away half of the white light.

[Did this mean Zhang Guoling received only half of the Exp?]

[Why?]

Green's eyes turned into question marks.

After the white light entered his body, Zhang Guoling could feel the mysterious power in his body

Suddenly shocked, he turned to the zombie bodies, his eyes widened, a realization dawning on him.

Green observed his epiphany, unsurprised by the bewilderment that came with this discovery.

Who could have anticipated such a revelation in a zombie's head? Green himself stumbled upon this secret by chance. Which normal person would really go looking in a zombie's head if they even had the chance?

Green didn't intend to conceal this information from the other survivors either.

The more survivors there were, the better it would be for him. Even if he was strong now, he couldn't outmatch all the zombies in the world.

And, whether he disclosed it or not, the truth would surface in due time.

"Some zombies have such crystals in their brains," Green tapped his head and explained. "You can become stronger by crushing the crystals and absorbing the white light," he elaborated further to the confused Zhang Guoling.

Green couldn't explain further, he really didn't know much more than Zhang Guoling about this matter either.

Plus, they had already wasted enough time here; they needed to get to the eighth floor, otherwise, the girl might have joined the horde before they could get to her.

Green motioned for Zhang Guoling. "Let's go"

Zhang Guoling was still shocked as he followed in a daze.
