30: Animal Stampede!

Major Kylie led Captain Dick with his team towards one of the eagles flying last in the group. All the other eagles flew at a steady pace following Michael’s Order, as he was in charge of them and they needed to listen to him for any action.

Kylie and the team reached the eagle and flew along at its pace. Kylie looked at the soldier on the eagle wearing full body armor in a sky blue color and asked “Ella, what's the problem?”

Ella replied to Kylie with a flustered expression on her face “Major, my eagle's wings slightly strained a few minutes earlier, and was struggling to fly with the pain.”

Kylie nodded her head at her and said “Okay, you control your eagle to fly steadily. We will apply the emergency medicine and, after that, fly slowly till we reach the land.”

Ella nodded her head obediently, then Kylie ordered Dick to apply the medicinal ointment on Ella’s Eagle. Dick executed her order obediently by flying below Ella’s eagle and applying medicine to its strained body part. Within a few minutes, everything was solved and Kylie took back her role as a commander of the flying troop and resumed the journey as usual.

They encountered a few more inconveniences on their trip, but they solved them efficiently and reached the wilderness.

John wandered around the forest aimlessly as he checked out memories of the animals he considered interesting and also checked for any animals with unique mutations and noted them down leisurely. On one fine day John as usual woke up from his sleep and began morning hunting to refill the wasted energy. He formed it as a habit, like brushing his teeth in his past life as a human.

A group of cows with oversized feet grazed on the leaves of a medium-sized tree leisurely. They are nomadic species that constantly travel and leave no traces of their presence as lightly as possible, to avoid becoming hunting targets of a particular species. Just as they settled in this area of forest and grazed on the leaves, grasses, and plants leisurely.

One of the fully grown cows was particularly lazy with its square-shaped teeth; it broke the hard branches of the trees and chewed while looking at the surroundings.

Then suddenly, the lazy cow disappeared from where it stood in a fraction of a movement. The surrounding cows sensed something and looked at the empty place blankly, as some of them remembered there was a cow there a moment ago. But seeing a silent atmosphere and no trace of the cow, with their limited memory capacity and reasoning they left that thought process and continued with what they were doing.

Just above them, in one of the largest trees shaped like a spear that pierces the sky. John circled around the main trunk of the tree and swallowed the lazy cow he abducted silently from the herd of notorious cows that he named them because these cows replenished his hunger more than any other animal.

John climbed to the top of the tree and left deep prints of his scales on the tree trunk which made the tree look like a snake-scaled sky-piercing tree. He didn't care about this; he climbed the tree that was taller than some of the mountains he had seen in his past life with a myriad of emotions due to changes in the scenery and the beauty of the vast nature. From the top of the tree, John looked at the wide land covered with trees, and the river in the distance which were all illuminated by the morning sun rays, and hissed in a passion.

~Hisssss~

The creepy hiss traveled through the atmosphere for a very long distance and made most of the animals freeze in a deep fear that made their body tremble. The cows and the animals surrounding the giant tree ran away from the surrounding hastily, killing some other animals in the process. Most animals from herbivores, and carnivores to omnivores all ran without any discrimination or desire to hunt each other.

They all ran away like they were running away from natural disasters like floods, and storms.

John looked at what was happening with an overflowing arrogance that came from his human emotions and hissed again which came as thunder to the ears of the animals running away and intensified their fear and speed. For the first time in centuries, the wilderness experienced an animal stampede.

The native tribes with no cohesion like a kingdom suffered the most, with most of the small tribes surviving vigorously in this hell-like environment. Perished under the animal stampede created by John.

Miles away from the giant tree, a small tribe of people wearing animal clothes lived depending on gathering, and hunting. The people from this tribe lived in a hut made of mud and clay.

A five to six-year-old brown-skinned kid with crusty long black hair wearing only small cloth covering his lower private body parts was hanging on a tree with his legs as an anchor. Outside the tribe waiting for his dad who was gone hunting. The tree the kid was hanging was a little taller than the surrounding tree, so the kid had a better view of the surroundings for a mile.

Suddenly the kid heard a deep-penetrating hiss. The kid's survival instinct kicked in hearing this hiss, with a jolt the kid climbed up the tree top, and with goosebumps covering his body, he looked towards the side where birds were all flying. His father had taught him many things about the forest to increase his chances of survival in this cruel forest.

The kid's eyes showed a puzzled expression upon seeing numerous birds flying everywhere with the giant tree as the center. As his father hadn't taught him anything about what was happening in front of him, with a puzzled expression he climbed down the tree, and ran toward his home.

Some other children who were also hanging around the other trees returned to their respective homes. Even if they couldn't understand what was happening, they all felt not safe alone in the forest. A few moments later, they all returned home and informed the elders about what they saw. The tribe’s people didn't waste any time as they abandoned their tribe area and ran away to a safe place from the incoming stampede of animals, after confirming it.

A few minutes after the tribe’s people ran away, an animal stampede reached their settlement range and trampled everything that they built, destroying the traces of their remains, and making the place into one of the many places that were obliterated.

While the animals are destroying everything in their path and making it look like the end of the world. A group of black figures in the sky reached the location of the tribe and hovered over it.

The group of black figures was the troops sent by the kingdom of Vika to hunt down the giant snake that entered the Black Bear City region and unleashed merciless cruel slaughter on the various military camps of the border defense group. Major Kevin and Kylie looked at the chaotic animal stampede that left nothing but destruction in its path with solemn expressions on their faces.

Major Kevin broke the silence with a question “Kylie, have you seen anything like this before?”

Kylie replied to him as she controlled the eagle to fly closer to the ground “I have not seen anything like this. But I heard a thing about Beast Riot or Animal Stampede.”

She explained as she looked at the red-eyed animals “It is said that whenever anything disastrous was happening that could threaten their survival, something like natural disasters. Animals could sense it beforehand and would try to escape that catastrophic event. That's the most reasonable thing I can think of, comparing the current circumstances.”

Major Kevin nodded his head and said with a sigh of relief “Thankfully nothing like this has happened in the region of the kingdom. Otherwise, it will be very hard for our people to survive.”

Kylie shook her head at this statement and said solemnly “This kind of thing has happened in our kingdom, more than once, when our ancestors came here first. Only after numerous fights and wiping out the majority of the powerful animal species, did the beast stampede stop happening.”

Kevin asked with a doubtful expression “You said that the beast stampede only happened because of the natural disasters. But from what you explained there seemed to be multiple beast stampedes when the kingdom was founded, does that mean numerous disasters happened at that time? And you also said something about powerful animal species. Is there any connection between the two of these?”

Kylie nodded her head at this statement and said “Yes! The reason for multiple stampedes was some of the king-type species.”

Kevin raised a question in a dubious tone “King-type species!”

Kylie showed a tired expression on her face. Seeing this, Kevin waved his hands and said “Let's take a break. We can continue this discussion later."
