Mistflower 32: A Way Home

Mistflower 32: A Way Home

2 months had passed since Muqu had left. I was still here in Nesher; procrastinating. I used my [Acedia] as an excuse but it wasn’t bad enough to not make the flight back. I just didn’t feel like going through the whole ordeal. Isn’t magic supposed to be magical? Why can’t I snap my fingers and teleport to Kaledon?!

I knew the answer to that. Spatiotemporal teleports and warps have their failure rate increase drastically beyond a certain distance. Lightning and light-based teleports send out mana pings which also have a range and can die out. The teleport fails if the ping doesn’t return.

The last alternative was teleportation with a set point or mana circles. I haven’t drawn any of those so that’s out too.

Why is teleportation so primitive?! A Misha in Witchaven had researched it but I couldn’t remember what she came up with.

I went over my list of supplies for the umpteenth time. I had everything but I always found a way to add more to it as it was preferable over flying for 4-5 months...

The ocean breeze was relaxing. The locals were nice and the food was good. I had almost messed up as I had forgotten that mana was the currency here.

“Over a decade since I came here eh? The brats that I left behind will be full-grown men now. Any human I knew would have aged significantly.

The full duration was nearly 13 years. 13 years had I spent on this continent looking for Verruka and getting into trouble.

I dropped my head in my hands.

“Why am I so slow?”

13 years is nothing in the timespan of an immortal. The problem is that the world doesn’t sit still while I waste time.

I chugged more energy drinks as I tried to find the motivation to start the journey back. Or... how about I try to solve this teleportation problem so I don’t have to fly back?! Work smart, not hard!

I opened the magic circle of my spatiotemporal teleport and looked through the 2 folds it had.

Some skills are so complicated that they have folds, like pages in a book. Most skills are a simple sheet of paper but some might need more pages. Only a simplified version gets shown when cast as if showing the book’s summary.

Skills like these are harder to copy and steal because of these folds. It also makes them a challenge to adjust.

My eyes went over the many mana rune clusters and i was at loss on where to start.

Nothing suggested that this teleport had clusters that were responsible for the distance it could traverse.

While magic circles and mana runes are my specialty; the quirks, theory, and various applications of different elements aren’t. I might be misunderstanding something about spatiotemporal magic.

”Hmm, ignoring distance... Is this it? What’s the point in having something coding for distance if it’s supposed to ignore distance? But how do I tweak this then?”

I spent days and weeks going through the magic circle. I went around trying to find out if any villager had any documents or knew anything about the nature of spatiotemporal magic or teleports.

Nothing... It wasn’t surprising as magic isn’t this continent’s strong suit but still.

Do I continue looking into teleports? What if I never find it? Or what if I find out but I still can’t cross the ocean due to range limitations, mana limitations or limitations I can’t think of? Is flying back the only option?

Time and information were the resources I lacked. Time was the most important as it had almost been 3 months since Muqu left. At this rate, it might take a year before I finally get myself to fly back.

I went to sleep early and drank many energy drinks to get my [Acedia] under control. I would just go and depart tomorrow. It would be unlikely that I would return after flying for 2-3 hours. I would have to commit to the flight and that’s how I will get this done!

The morning came and all I needed was 2 more hours.

I woke up and the sun was setting.

“I... I suck...”

How did this happen? All I wanted was 2 more hours of sleep. I went out and purchased an alarm cock. It would cuckle-doodle-doo when the morning came. The vendor assured me that it was the loudest alarm cock in the village.

The loudest and most obnoxious sound woke me up the next morning. It even gave me a headache.

“Ok mr Rooster. I’m awake now, you can stop.”

The alarm cock kept going and going and going. It ran away from me when I tried to catch it. Was it mocking me?

I tried to catch it peacefully but the mocking cuckle-doodle-doos pissed me off so I started using fire magic and turned my alarm cock into crispy breakfast. Nobody had noticed my use of fire magic luckily.

I was wide awake and fed! It’s time to go!

Everything went into my dimensional pocket, I hopped on my fan and flew off.

“Just 2 hours Azu, after that it will be too much of a pain to return so you will commit.”

10 minutes passed, 20 minutes passed, 30 minutes passed and I wanted to turn back.

The ocean sipped by below me, nothing going on in the sky. It was one of those rare moments where I could use a random fairy attack but... nothing.

I calmed down as I could feel my unwillingness to return. I did it, now to keep this up for several months.

The previous map I had made of my route was unreliable so I made a new one but the validity was questionable as well. Some islands to rest on would be nice but I can’t count on it.

A week passed and the first island came in sight. It wasn’t planned but it was a pleasant surprise. The island looked strange, however. It was as if the water had receded from it. I also noticed it on Nesher but thought it was a local problem.

The island had fresh water and strange fruits. It felt great to have solid ground below my feet and I spent the day strolling on the beach.

This island won’t get hit by a tsunami right? Many colorful shells had been stranded. No animals though. This might have happened a long time ago. I haven’t been near the ocean in 13 years.

There were red shells, blue shells, orange and green shells. Some were multi-coloured and some looked like crystals. I collected these treasures as they were too pretty to pass on.

I enjoyed my 2 day beach holiday before I continued my flight. My laziness and unwillingness to fly back to Kaledon had disappeared. All I wanted to do was get back home, no matter what it takes.

A miracle happened a month after I departed.

My hands glowed blue and a mistflower made out of mana grew out of my hand.

I had given a [Mistflower Stone] to the 4 men that had saved me. They could use it when they were in trouble and I would fly to their aid; or more accurately, teleport.

I was excited but worried. It’s a free teleport but it means one of them has gotten into trouble, severe enough to use the stone that had gone unused for 13 years.

I had hoped that one of them used it for a free ride but their problem might be on the same difficulty tier as the Boshi town barrier.

A moment of hesitation. Would it be worth it? I accepted the teleport as I knew that it certainly would be worth it.

My body turned into blue glowing mist flower petals as the [Mistflower Teleport] went off. The setpoint; the [Mistflower Stone].
