Azure 13: The Beast

Azure 13: The Beast

The beast roared and charged at me and swiped its claw. It was fast!

My fan unfolded and blocked the swipe. I don’t have to be afraid of it breaking but my physical strength was a problem. I was getting pushed back. Maybe that’s a good thing. I let it push me back, which caused me to get sent flying backward, and I swung my fan at it, turned around and swung the fan behind me to cancel out my momentum.

The thick fur of the beast prevented it from completely freezing over. I had expected some icicles to tear through it but they had been reduced to shattered pieces of ice. It lunged and I swung the fan behind me.

I might not be fast but I can blow myself away. The trajectory is quite linear though so it’s predictable but it works for simple movements. It comes at the cost that I have to cancel out my momentum so large areas will get blasted every time I have to move around like this. Not very environment friendly but I’m working on it.

The beast clawed at the air and sent enormous [Air Slashes] at me. I swung my fan at it and cancelled it out. The beast caught 2 enormous icicles and threw them back at me.

“Hey! That’s cheating!” I hid behind my fan to block the icicles. “Heh, how about…”

A shadow appeared above me as it had jumped up and tried to land on me. Another swing of the fan to blow myself away. I need something more energy efficient. The beast crashed and large rocks flew out in every direction so I had to hide behind my fan again, obstructing my vision.

Is this the goal of this beast? Does it have intelligence? Another shadow appeared above me and I had to blow myself away again to not get crushed. More flying rocks in all directions and I tried something else to deal with them but I got hit by some.

“Ouch! That hurts!” I was getting tired from swinging my fan like this. My physical condition is pathetic. I’m a Misha, I should be able to blow up anything with magic!

I thought back to the past me who preferred control over power. “Heh stupid bitch, control means nothing if you die before you can control your powers.” I mocked myself as the mana in my fan activated.

“How about it red beast? How about you skip to dessert?” I used my whole body to make a large swing with the fan. Freezing winds froze the beast to the ceiling as it had tried to jump on me again.

The ice started to crack so I started running. I found a corridor in the side of this mountain and ran through it. A loud crash behind me. Some growling that evolved into a roar followed by heavy thuds as it was chasing me.

I folded the fan and started smacking at the rock walls besides me, trying to collapse the corridor behind me.

It didn’t sound like it was working. My side hurt from all this running. I wish I could fly…

“Wait, fans can fly right?”

This might sound silly but if I can use my fan like a glider I can hang off it. I would prefer to sit on it though. This corridor was the wrong space to test this though.

I kept smacking the walls with the folded fan and bringing the walls down behind me. It only slowed the beast a bit. I emerged from the exit of the tunnel and tumbled down again. I have been living here for over 3 years but I’m still used to relatively flat areas as I’ve spent most of my life on the Boshi plateau.

This flight response had made me forget the last 3 years and the fact that hardly anything is flat on this continent. The upside was that I didn’t need to expend stamina to travel at a decent speed. The downside was that my hair was gathering twigs and leaves and getting messy as I was tumbling down the slope.

A red streak followed me down the slope. How fast is this thing? I used my tumbling momentum to swing my fan. It was easy to do like this but gravity was doing the heavy lifting, the only price was my hair and my balance after I came to a halt.

I crashed into a big tree. This didn’t hurt, what did hurt was seeing many strands of my hair fluttering before me.

“Noo! My hair!” I tried to get up but my dizziness made it difficult. The jungle was also getting quite dark. Luckily it was hard to miss an enormous red streak hurdling at me. I managed to dive to the side as a streak of red crashed into the large tree and took it down.

I managed to block a swipe of its claws with my unfolded fan and got sent flying again.

I need to reassess my methods of travel. Most of it is involuntary or gravity based. Nausea was creeping up on me as I was tumbling again and never recovered from the dizziness. I randomly swung my fan to try and catch the beast in a stray attack. The ground below me disappeared as I had been sent flying off the mountain. I suppose this is a good time to test my glider idea else this will end up ugly.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

It was limited but [Stabilized Flight] worked. I stabilized in the air, unfolded my fan and sat on it as my dizziness was slowly fading. The mana in the Hairpin Fan activated.

“It worked! Yes! I’m a genius!” The fan was pushing down on the ambient mana below it making it float. It wasn’t gliding but I don’t care!

The beast was looking at me from a distance as it couldn’t reach me.

“Ha! No dinner for you!” The beast roared and retreated. “Yeah you run!”

I could say all that because I survived but it did kick my ass. I don’t believe I did any damage to it. I concentrated on the mana in the fan I understand it a bit better now. I took out some snacks and a comb. My hair is a mess. It was dark but the sight was beautiful. Nature was the ruler of this continent and it made the continent gorgeous. All this jungle helped though.

Kaledon isn’t as rich in jungle as this continent. My hair looked presentable. I wanted to put my comb down on my fan when I got the scare of my life as I saw a red streak.

I got knocked out of the sky. This stupid beast didn’t retreat! He created enough distance to pick up enough speed to make the jump!

“Stupid stalker!” I sent icicles at the beast and it sent [Air Slashes] at me. How I wish gravity worked like in those cartoons humans love to watch. This thing is way heavier than me so in cartoons he would drop to the ground faster. Unfortunately, I’m bound to reality. However, I can use my fan to glide and slow my descent! This stupid beast made it hard for me to get to my fan though. What an asshole! It kept knocking the fan out of my hand with [Wind Blasts] every time I could get a hold off it.

The jungle was getting dangerously close. The fall wouldn’t kill me but I might pass out. This beast might not and claim me as it’s dinner if that happens.

I used [Enlarge] on the fan, grabbed it and swung the folded fan at the beast. It got pushed back enough for me to unfold it and glide on it. Its [Air Slashes] missed and it crashed into the ground.

“Ugh, why are these things so sturdy” I sent icicles and [Azur Petals] after that asshole.

A loud roar shook the jungle.

“Huh? You’re still not dead?!” A tree flew at me.

“Oh come on!” I had to evade a barrage of trees that had been pulled out of the ground. Some rocks were mixed into it.

“Stop it!” I hadn’t mastered flying on my fan yet so I was evading clumsily. Getting hit by a tree wouldn’t be funny.

The barrage stopped. This was concerning. This beast had shown intelligence so it might have hatched a plan to shoot me down. I tried to glide away.

I spotted a red streak down below, grabbed my fan and sent a large blast of freezing wind and icicles at it and got back on my fan. I repeated this whenever I saw a red streak moving down below. Surely this would be enough, right?

The barrage started again. It seems I either didn’t hit him or it hardly did damage to him. This beast had deadly accuracy. But it wasn’t stupid, it also threw trees at me that would certainly miss. It’s goal was to limit the area in which I could evade.

This beast scares me. Release this on Kaledon and it would take a very long time before someone would be able to put it down. Something tells me that this beast is one of many.

I evaded an enormous tree flying at me. it was a close call. A thick vine was wrapped around the trunk. A red streak entered my sight.

“Very smart… what am I supposed to do about this…” I got knocked out of the sky again. This stupid beast had found a thick vine and bound one end at the large heavy tree, the other end to himself.

The large tree had way more force behind it than the other trees, probably so that it was able to pull up the beast into the sky. The intelligence and the strength of this beast is so unfair.

I had enough of this beast. My first swing cast a [Tsunami] that was not cast by me but my fan, which causes [Tsunami] to act slightly differently but the main properties were the same. I spun around my axis while still falling and the second swing sent out an [Azure Spear] although it looked more like a large hairpin. I suppose this is an [Azure Hairpin] then.

The [Tsunami] didn’t do much against the beast but the [Azure Hairpin] pierced through its thick fur. The first attack that did damage to it. Another spin around my axis and the third swing used [Mistflower field].

Countless mistflowers made out of ice flew at the beast, exploded and cut into it. My fourth swing cast [Azure mist]. And my last swing just had me make half a turn around my axis as I blew my fan behind me to cancel out my fall.

I was panting heavily. The area had gotten covered in mist but hardly anything was activating. I heard the Beast crashing down, the [Mistflower Field] was still active though. It seems [Azure Mist] was unnecessary because the creatures on this continent don’t rely on magic and mana as this beast had painfully reminded me. It should be fine as long as it doesn’t use [Air Slash] or [Wind Blast].

So, the creatures here can use magic but its very limited. It reminds me of Jafliximus. I’ve only ever seen him use [Fireball]. Are the creatures here limited to only 1 or 2 magic skills? Generating mana takes way longer for them here though. It could be said that using magic is their ultimate skill.

The [Azure Mist] dropped as the beast had been defeated by the [Mistflower Field]. Using the magic from my Hairpin Fan also requires some physical feats. It’s a magical weapon after all. And it’s the reason I was being conservative with my skills. I’m not made for this.

Just swinging the fan and using the innate effects from the weapon are way less taxing than using skills. It seems that skills are needed to bring down an opponent of this calibre however.

My whole body hurt. I might have pulled some muscles. It was completely dark now but I’m too exhausted to make it back to the village now.

I managed to drag myself toward a small cave. Maybe ‘cave’ was giving it too much credit. It was an indent in the side of a mountain. It had enough room for 3 people. But it was enough to keep me dry in case of a tropical shower.

My unfolded fan acted as a door protecting me from the outside. I curled up in a ball and started to slowly heal myself. I wanted to sleep but it’s important that I get enough healing in before I fell asleep.

I allowed my consciousness to slip after my body had healed up enough.
