Chapter 37: Electricity Hurts Bad

Chapter 37: Electricity Hurts Bad

Next day, Sol woke up in the morning and headed downstairs. He saw his family gathered around the dining table having their breakfast. His mother smiled at him, “Had a good night’s sleep, dear?”

Sol's eyes flashed with hesitation for an instant but he covered it up with a smile, “Yep!”

“Come sit down. I made some pancakes.”

“Is that so?” Sol walked to the table and took his seat. He looked over at Faye who was in her baby chair and making baby noises. She looked at him and he smiled at her. This entire time, his father was glancing at him with questioning eyes. Sol looked at his father and said nothing, only eating his pancakes and slathering some syrup on them.

His father made some gestures asking, “What happened last night?”

“Not much. Mom exhausted herself,” Sol didn’t want to tell his father what happened as he could see it having a similar outcome if not worse.

His father made another series of gestures, “I heard screaming.”

“Don't ask questions you won’t get the answers to,” Sol said a bit forcefully. He pointed to his mother, “Don't ask her either. Wizarding business.”

His father paused and after a while reluctantly nodded. Seeing his father agree, he smiled lightly.

That's one problem out of the way. Let's not mention Voldemort anymore.

After everyone finished their breakfast, his father headed off to work and his mother started doing chores around the house. Sol, on the other hand, tried to get closer to Faye. So, he started playing with her.

He sat her down on the floor of her room and waved his wand. Soon, orbs of lights started floating out of the tip of Sol's wand. He cast Mediocris Gloria but lessened the output of mana. As such, the orbs were a bit dim so that they wouldn’t hurt her eyes. Faye watched the orbs float around with fascination in her eyes. As soon as one of the orbs floated close to her, she reached out a hand and tried to grab it. But as it was a ball of light, her hand couldn’t grab it but went through it instead. She tried to grab it a few more times but to no avail. She puffed up her cheeks in frustration which Sol found rather cute and amusing. He immediately dissipated the light orbs and cast Bubble charm. This time bubbles flew out of his wand and danced around the room. Once the bubbles came close to her, she tried to do the same thing. But this time the bubbles popped when she touched them. Since there was no soap in them, it wouldn’t get in her eyes. Her face wore a look of shock but soon she started laughing and popping the other bubbles. Casting various spells, Sol played with Faye until lunch and got much closer to her.

At night, he would sing her to sleep. At that time, if one were to carefully observe Faye, they would see that she had fallen into a trance-like state. Sol also knew this yet he didn’t know who or what she saw.

Next Night

During this time, Sol could be found sitting on his desk with several books by his side. He would flip through them and check them with his notes or checks them with other books. After a while, he closed all the books and leaned back on his chair.

There are no lightning attribute spells, huh. I know of: Ice, Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Lightning, Holy and, Dark attribute spells. Yet out of the 8 types of spells only Lightning, Dark and Earth are missing from my arsenal. I can scratch off Earth as there are no direct spells for this. Though Transfiguration can help in that department to a certain extent. It’s a bit problematic not to have Earth attribute spells as most spells can be blocked by solid objects. It’s especially true for this world where the magic level is low. I reckon an Avada Kedavra can also be blocked by hiding in cover. But right now, I need Lightning attribute spells the most. Aside from being especially destructive and causing status effects, it also can hurt souls. Though it can only do that if the souls aren’t whole and aren’t attached to the main body. This means it will be especially effective against Voldemort who from what I’ve seen has imbued a bit of his soul in Harry. But I still wouldn’t use this to expel Voldemort's soul out of Harry lest I accidentally harm his soul as well.

He got up from the chair and headed downstairs. He held his chin with his hands and walked, seemingly deep in thought.

Where do I get a Lightning attribute spell? There are no base models for Lightning spells, so I can’t even modify them or create them by fusing two other spells. I can create them out of scratch. But that would require me to get a feel for lightning. I really didn’t focus on the feeling of getting hit by lightning. I really regret not doing so.

As he walked around in the living room, his eyes wandered around and got fixed on the light bulb above his head. His eyes lit up as he finally found an answer to his dilemma.

Haha! Now, that’s a good idea. Electricity is basically the same as lightning. All I have to do is get shocked. But how?

He looked around and saw the television. It was turned off as no one was watching it. His parents were in their room and Faye was napping in hers. He got closer to the TV and started observing it. He noticed the plug attached to the socket in the wall. He grinned as he had a wild idea. He turned off the switch on the socket and whipped out his wand. Using Ventus Cogo, he cut the wire connected to the plug. Now the plug attached to the socket had a foot-long piece of wire stuck to it. He sat down in front of it and started to separate the plastic covering from the inner copper wire. After a while, the shiny brown copper wire was jutting out of the plug and was spread out like the tip of a paintbrush.

He looked at the wire and gulped subconsciously. He didn’t have a good grasp of the electricity that would come out of the socket but he still activated Total Body Reinforcement. He has been hit by lightning before and knows how destructive it is. Though he had confidence that the electricity here wouldn’t be destructive it still didn’t hurt to be prepared.

He started at the site for a while before he closed his eyes and bit down.

Bzzt!

Immediately he started shaking like he was having a seizure as an...electrifying feeling coursed through his body. His head snapped back at reflex and he let go of the wire. He kept shaking as he laid down on the floor. After a while of shaking, he became completely still and was unable to move. He laid still as he savored the sensation.

Hmm~ that certainly reminded me of getting struck by lightning. It’s causing paralysis for now. It seemed to affect my nerves and heart a bit. Nothing serious(for me). I can only guess what will happen once the voltage rises. Stopping someone's heart, burns, and nerve and muscle problems should be possible.

As he was thinking of all these, his father came downstairs. He came to the living room and saw his son lying on the ground with his eyes open, unmoving. The two stared at each other for a long time. His father then sighed and went upstairs. Seeing this, cold sweat started running down Sol's back. He knew he was going upstairs to call his mother. Although he wanted to get up and leave, he was still paralyzed and even if he wasn’t, she would’ve known just by looking at the ripped TV cord. His mother came downstairs followed by his father. Once she looked at Sol's plight, she immediately went into ‘preach’ mode. Sol couldn’t even leave as she berated him for his reckless actions for hours on end. He could bitterly smile and resign himself to his fate.

A Few Days Later

Within a room in Sol's house: “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!” Manic laughter could be heard and it quickly echoed within the house. It was Sol who laughing like a lunatic as small sparks and bolts of lightning ripped around his hands. As he kept on laughing, his mother's angry shout could be heard from downstairs, “STOP LAUGHING!!”

He immediately quietened down and sunk his head low. “Sorry!” After apologizing, he turned his attention towards the rippling electric current in his hand. He dispersed them and took his wand out and left for the backyard.

He cast a Serpensortia and a snake emerged from his wand. He then took a few steps back. He aimed at the snake and flicked his wand. A bolt of silver lightning shot out of the wand and struck the snake. The snake was burned and a piece of its flesh exploded. Sol had a beaming smile as he saw this happened. This was one of the three spells, he focused on making the past few days.

Fulmen

Electrical Intensity: 180 mA

Total Magic Power Required: 200 mu

This is the first Lightning attribute spell he created. But basing it on the electricity supplied to homes, it doesn’t have the lethality of actual electricity. It has enough power to burn and incapacitate humans. Shifting his gaze from the dead snake. He again wishes his wand, a small little lightning bolt dances on the tip of his wand but doesn’t fly out. This is his second Lightning attribute spell.

Debilitas

Electrical Intensity: 75 mA

Total Magic Power Required: 75 mu

This is a fairly harmless one as all it does is paralyze someone. Much like what happened to Sol a few days ago. It will mostly be used to incapacitate someone and it is a rather niche alternative to Petrificus Totalus.

The last spell is not a Lightning attribute spell. It is a fire one. Sol disperses the small lightning bolt on the tip of his wand. He again flicks it and small balls of orange fire shoot out the wand in quick succession.

Ignis Pila

Number of Fire Balls: 2 – 7

Temperature: 1100°C

Total Magic Power Required: 50 – 175 mu

This is a combination of the Bubble Charm and Incendio. During his spell-making process, it occurred to Sol that he had no offensive Fire attribute spells. This spell is the end result of his efforts. It’s a basic spell but versatile nonetheless.

As all of the spells worked as intended, Sol went inside the house with a huge smile on his face. Going along with this happy trend, he intends to play with Faye again. It’s always a happy day when you create new spells.
