Chapter 18: Doing Stupid Things

Chapter 18: Doing Stupid Things

I'm currently in the hospital wing getting my mouth treated by Madam Pomfrey. What happened you ask? Oh nothing, I just burned my mouth. Don't ask how.

I got extremely frustrated with my spirit animal. Why does it keep pacing around 5 meters away from me? Come on, I'm right here, you big dumb cat. Should I get some snacks for you or something? Sorry, I can't bring tuna inside my fucking mind.

Haah~

You'll feel really frustrated if you were in my spot. It's like someone waving a piece of cake in front of your eyes but you're bolted to the ground. After 3 or so hours, I felt pissed. Pissed enough to lose my mind. Jesus, what kind of black cat is that? Why is it as big as a dog? Why doesn't it approach me? No, I'm not going to use the other methods. If I can, then I'll use the best one.

As I think about what to do to get that cat near me, hours pass away. If you think I'm wasting time, don't worry today was an Animagus training day. I kept thinking of things and acted on them. I manifested a tuna in my mind space but that cat didn't come. Guess it wasn't real enough. Ahh, it must not like fish. Chicken? Still didn't come. Should I sing it a song? Fine.

Hymn For The Sleepless

Jesus, you're still not coming. I played the song in my mind so there shouldn't be any mistakes. I finally give up after 2 hours. My mental energy almost spent and I become delirious.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no. I can't let today end like this. I can't have an unproductive day. Fuck no. I didn't just spend 5 hours of my free time doing nothing. For fuck sake, I haven't eaten lunch for this. NO, I refuse to let my day end like this.

.....

THAT'S IT. I'll try out new ways to cast magic. I'll try breath casting. I'll become a fire-breathing dragon. I'm a genius. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Long story short, because breath casting is really hard to do for some reason, and the fact that I wasn't right in the head, I tried to cast Incendio with my mouth. It's not that I failed, it's that I really had no preparation. Trying to breath cast is really hard and I mean really hard. I kept pouring in mana, but it kept dissolving. After close to 5 tries, I half-succeeded. I say half because I did manage to breath cast but the Incendio I cast had too much mana, so it manifested into a huge fire and then dissolved after a split second. So if one saw what had happened, they'd say I got hit with a Confringo to the face. Point Blank.

It hurt. It hurt so much, I woke up from my delirium. And if it was enough to wake me up then it was really painful. Should've used Total Body Reinforcement. But I guess I wanted to be a dragon as quickly as possible. As for my face, the bottom half was scorched. The insides of my mouth got hit the worst. The insides had third-degree burns. I would've tasted burning flesh if my taste buds weren't seared in the process. Some of my teeth looked like they melted or got blew off, I didn't know which. Rather, I didn't care. Because IT HURTS.

I hauled my ass over to Madam Pomfrey in the hospital wing, covering my mouth. Madam Pomfrey looked like she had a heart attack. So, now I'm getting treated by Madam Pomfrey. She gives me a potion to drink and dabs the lower half of my face with another potion. As I drink the potion, a cool sensation flows throughout my mouth. It HURTS. What the hell! Did you add ice to a burn wound or something?

"Mr. Balor, the burns inside your mouth are a bit serious. It seems they would need a bit more time to heal.", Madam Pomfrey diagnoses.

"...", I mean what can I say? Do you think I'm in a state to say anything? Instead, I just nod.

Madam Pomfrey continues, "I healed the burns on your face, but your mouth needs two or three more days. You can't eat solid food during this time."

Madam Pomfrey stands up and goes to a cabinet, presumably where she keeps medicine and potions. She takes a potion from the shelf and gives it to me.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

"Take this three times a day and you'll be healed within three days."

I nod to express my thanks and as I turn my back to leave, I feel a hand grasping my shoulder. The temperature of the room seems to have lowered? I feel a shiver run down my spine. I turn around only to see Madam Pomfrey smiling at me, menacingly.

Oh, God.

"Mr. Balor, shall we have a talk as to how you got these injuries?"

Someone save me.

No fuck, what's happening? Why is my return to Hogwarts so cursed?

Argh!

My violin... Should've seen this coming. I just try to use Transfiguration on my violin. No, in all honesty, my thought process was perfect. The songs you could play on a violin were not much. I wanted to play more songs but they didn't have the violin in them. But I didn't have enough money to buy myself another instrument. I bought the flute with my own savings and got the violin as a birthday gift. No way in hell can I buy another instrument. So, I was at a loss.

After two days, I still didn't have a solution. Then as I was in Professor McGonagall's classes, it hit me.

Eureka! Why not use transfiguration to acquire the instruments? I'm such a genius.

So, I went back to the room. I thought about what to do, really carefully. After the last fiasco, I'd rather not have more accidents. I finally formulated a plan. I'd transfigure the violin into other instruments of the 'string instrument' family. I mean it's perfect. To transfigure something into something else which just has a slight difference from the original doesn't require that much concentration and has a less chance of making mistakes. And there are many instruments in the 'string instrument' family.

My genius know no bounds.

I aim my wand at my violin, form a picture of a mandolin in my mind and start transfiguring. It worked but... the strings... they uhh, broke.

NO, fuck I'm so stupid. Of course, this would happen.

I thought that the strings would also transfigure but contrary to popular belief, they did not. A mandolin has eight strings while my violin had half that. The strings also had different thicknesses and lengths.

No, wait, the situation is still salvageable. I can just use Reparo on the strings.

And I did exactly that, I separated the torn strings from the oak-colored mandolin and set them aside. I pointed my wand at them and cast Reparo. And it worked! The strings were fixed. But then another thought popped up.

Can I transfigure the strings as well?

I found the question to that answer the next day as I didn't have the strings with me in the room. Yes, I can. I transfigured violin strings into mandolin strings. I was elated. I attached them to the transfigured mandolin and started playing.

Lullaby For The Departed

Haha, it works. But as I finished another thought popped up which left me utterly depressed.

Couldn't I have asked the room for a mandolin?

In all my time studying and practicing this world's magic, I've come to understand something. The magic of this world is really weird. It doesn't follow the grades. The magic is categorized in grades to make it easier for people to learn them. But this world doesn't seem to rely on grades. Rather, their attributes are a lot looser and thus they really can't be put in grades. One can argue that the grading system is not that efficient as magic if used correctly can show usefulness and power above its grade. And I agree. But the magic I have knowledge of could still be graded. Whereas magic here relies on its usefulness.

For example, the Cruciatus Curse is 4th-grade magic, however, it could never show usefulness or strength above its grade. From what I've seen even if it was just a bit, the curse can only casted on a single target. Well, this analysis of mine can be easily changed since it is highly possible that the curse wasn't used to its full potential on my father that night. I can actually see that being true. After all, why would you use a Cruciatus Curse on multiple targets when there was only one, to begin with? Well, let's not delve deeper and use the first scenario I mentioned. If the Cruciatus Curse can only be used on a single target, then it could never show its usefulness above 4th grade. However, a well-cast Oppugno which is a 3rd Grade spell can kill someone instantly. Thus, showing usefulness belonging to a 4th-grade spell. And this just goes to show how wrong how I was with my analysis of this world.

This is a huge mistake on my part. I've underestimated this world. Now, I'm not even sure if my guess of this world being limited to 4th-grade magic is correct or not.

Haha... Guess, those words I remember were the truth, "Even if you have knowledge you might not necessarily have power. It all depends on how you use your knowledge." I still have a lot to learn.

What a life!
