As Wu Guang had overheard, Lu Shuren indeed arrived a few minutes later. Still, his appearance was a bit unexpected, after all, he not only descended from the 7th floor but was also accompanied by two guards. The first one could be explained simply, that he had been meeting with someone. But the fact that he was accompanied by two guards was indeed something surprising.
Especially as those guards' cultivation was very strange. Not only they were actually concealing it with some kind of talisman, something that was ineffective versus Wu Guang's earnest examination, but it was simply too high. After all, how come those guards had respectively cultivations of the 2nd and 3rd level of the Soul realm? Here one should consider that an inner elder deemed enough to protect the Sect's manor was just a 2nd level of the Soul realm. In fact, the captain of the guard had a cultivation of the 4th level of the Soul realm!
At this moment, Lan Yanzhi suddenly lunged forwards, but thankfully Elder Di managed to catch her before she exited the cabinet. Noticing this, Wu Guang closed the half-open cabinet door and turned towards her, while asking the trembling young woman
"Lan Yanzhi, what's wrong?"
"Double Shadow Assasin!" She practically screamed
"Calm yourself!" After shouting in response, Wu Guang asked
"Who?
"The guard following that person" Lan Yanzhi seemingly calmed enough to regain her rationale, and so as she answered, Elder Di weakened his grip. Still, when hearing something like this, he promptly asked
"Young lady, are you sure?"
"Yes. How could I forget his face?!" As she grew agitated once again, Wu Guang neared the door as to obstruct her if she wanted to rush out.
Thankfully Lan Yanzhi was mature enough to understand that right now she could not do anything, and so sat down while forcibly calming herself.
After she was calm enough, both Wu Guang and Elder Di confirmed what they heard.
"Young friend Wu Guang... The matter seems to be far more complicated than we thought"
"No, with due respect, I think Elder Di is mistaken"
"Hmm?
"When the matter about me getting my inheritance was raised, did not a bounty from the Underhill group appear? And then it was recalled, at least from what I can understand. Or in the worst case, it was a fake bounty as Lan Yanzhi's findings suggest. In any case, who would have such influence as to do either?"
"Someone high in the ladder of the Underhill group"
"Right"
"Huh! You think that the person responsible for the assassination bounty was this 'Double Shadow Assasin'?"
"Indeed. Most probably he ordered my assassination after hearing about my claim. But recalled it after someone, like... Chun Zemin told him about the key"
"But what about Lord Lu? I don't think someone like him would be involved"
"No, he has to be. After all, Elder Di does not knows who was the one in charge of the investigation and informed me about the tragedy that befell my family?"
"Now that young friend asks, I don't. You mean it was Lu Shuren?!"
"Indeed"
"I see. Then this also explains why Lady Shenlan acted so strangely. If the matter was reported as solved by her closest aide, the guard captain, she would really doubt your words. After all, between someone that has served and helped her during almost a dozen years and you... She would obviously believe the former"
"Yes, I thought the same after seeing the guard captain here"
"But would not that mean that Lu Shuren is in cahoots with Chun Zemin? And worse, the Underhill group?"
"Regretfully it seems so" As Wu Guang said this, he turned towards Lan Yanzhi and asked
"I understand what are you feeling, but we can not act for now. At least not until they reveal themselves. Do you understand the reasons?"
"Yes, I do. If anyone from the Sect acts right now, it would practically mean a war against the entire city"
"Yes. But rest assured, even if this meeting is not related to my matter, we will not allow someone like the 'Double Shadow Assasin' to run free for long. Elder Di, may you confirm this?"
Elder Di was at that moment in deep contemplation, but he still listened to Wu Guang's words and so knew what he was asking for. It was simply a guarantee, a guarantee that the Sect would act against this 'Double Shadow Assasin'. Normally, Elder Di would be reluctant to do so as he knew of the threat from the Eagle Kingdom, but at the same time, the latter meant that they needed to clear ranks.
And so, after a brief moment, he confirmed
"Young friend Wu Guang is right. If this man is indeed part of the Underhill group, the Sect will act to apprehend or eliminate him. Even if he is protected by the City Lord himself"
"Thank you" The one to thank was surprisingly Wu Guang, but after he continued, it was understandable why he did it
"Lan Yanzhi, you heard Elder Di. We will make sure to settle the matter with your family assassin. But first, we have to confirm who and why is backing him. So, let me ask you. Will you discard your revenge for a few days and follow me?"
"...Yes"
"Thank you"
Even though Wu Guang was speaking with Elder Di and Lan Yanzhi, and the talk was important, he did not forget to eavesdrop on Chun Zemin's cabinet. Regrettably, he caught only a few phrases before he had to stop. As for why it was because someone inside used several concealment and alarm talismans to guarantee their privacy. Granted, the first ones would not stop Wu Guang, but the alarm ones did make him give up. Although his mind power was practically all-mighty on the plane, alarm talismans could be destroyed only if one knew their location, and in this case, Wu Guang had no way to find it out without spreading his senses. which obviously he could not do as they could be sensed by other cultivators.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Actually, he could conceal himself enough to do it without being noticed, but right now, how could he? After all, Elder Di would instantly sense that something was amiss if Wu Guang's presence suddenly disappeared.
So in the end, Wu Guang had no other option than to give up. Still, the few phrases he heard, were enough to confirm all his previous guesses. Although it was not said directly, Lu Shuren questioned Chun Zemin about why they were going so far as to help the boy enter the mansion. And although the response was a bit cut, Chun Zemin had replied something about a bloodline key.
After hearing this, Wu Guang instantly understood everything. And indeed it was easy, after all, bloodline restricted keys were something very easy to create and would activate only when close relatives of the original owner used it. Considering that the door that blocked the access into the cave where supposedly spirit shards filled up the walls was something unbreakable below the Warrior realm...
It was no wonder why Chun Zemin was so eager to make Wu Guang reach the manor and would even help him to do so and find the key. Afterward, they would dispose of him and use the key to open the door. Still, Wu Guang did not understand two things.
First, how could his father get someone to create such a door? After all, Wu Heng was only a peak Spirit realm cultivator that disregarding his minor noble status, dedicated his life to economic deals.
And second, what really was behind that door? Even if there was a spirit crystal shard mine waiting to be developed, would this explain such risks taken by everyone present? Even if taking into account that they successfully killed Wu Guang and his family and nobody interfered, would not the City Lord claim the land citing there were no successors? Obviously, he would do so, especially if enticed by the mention of the shards.
And so basically Wu Guang could not answer the most important question of all, Why there was so much interest in this 'Earth Cry's Ridge' closed cave?
Returning to the situation at hand, Wu Guang had no safe means to eavesdrop on the following conversation. And as he understood that taking a risk now would jeopardize his real objectives, he decided to think about an alternative.
And sure enough, there was one. Actually, it was Elder Di's initial idea of seeing Chun Zemin's reaction after hearing Wu Guang's name. Regretfully, it did not work or the latter had a very strong willpower and so it was quickly forgotten. But... what if they took this to a new level?
It took only a few moments to convey the idea to Elder Di and Lan Yanzhen. The latter would also play a big role in the gamble that Wu Guang planned. Unsurprisingly, both of them agreed right away and so the three waited for almost an hour with their cabinet door open. All this hour creating the image of small talk while consuming different refreshments.
They waited until the moment that Chun Zemin's cabinet door opened before quickly preparing themselves and standing up with the intention to leave.
Setting the bill took only a brief moment, and after this...
Wu Guang, Elder Di, and Lan Yazhi unintentionally crossed Lu Shuren's path. As for Chun Zemin, he was also nearby, after all, he had to courteously see Lu Shuren off because of the latter's public status.
"Wu Heng's son, Wu Guang, greets Lord Lu" Having planned everything, including what to say, Wu Guang acted right as Lu Shuren's eyes centered on him.
"Hmm? Young friend Wu Guang! You have arrived in the city. Excuse this old man, I did not know of your arrival" Lu Shuren did not expect to see Wu Guang here and so a slight panic was visible deep in his eyes, but even so, he was someone with a lot of experience and so he spoke in a tone and manner according to the moment.
"How could Lord Lu bother with such. After all, I have arrived mainly on the Sect's orders. Still, as I am here, I intend to claim my family inheritance, after all, Lady Shenlan informed me that the matter was solved... and the culprits were caught" Wu Guang continued along with the plan, which was to force Lord Lu to speak about the matter.
"Oh, indeed. Did this old man's letter not reach your uncle? I informed him right after we found the culprits. I also mentioned that your inheritance will be waiting for you at any time, even if you were not yet old enough" Lu Shuren even feigned anger after finding that his supposedly sent letter was never delivered. Still, this did not buy him any respite, as Wu Guang continued to talk and talk.
"So it's like this! Regretfully such a letter never arrived, it seems that something happened. In any case, Lord Lu is not to blame, after all, the matter was settled. As for the inheritance, Lady Shenlan told me that there were no issues for me to take possession of the manor right away. I will actually do so tomorrow as the Sect's mission is complete and we will be spending a pair of days more in the city. If everything is well, the day after tomorrow I will celebrate a small banquet to both pay homage to my deceased family and celebrate my new life. If Lord Lu is available, I would like to invite you. After all, Lord Lu did so much to help this Wu Guang" Speaking humbly but without giving any moment to interject, Wu Guang continued to both thank Lu Shuren and inform him of his plans.
"Oh... I see, if there is nothing urgent, this old man will surely attend"
"Thank you for everything you have done for this Wu Guang. I hope that Lord Lu will be indeed able to attend. This junior will take his leave now"
"Hmm" Lu Shuren nodded in response.
