The glow of the computer screen illuminated his weary face as he typed furiously, trying to finish his homework before fatigue overtook him. His stomach grumbled, a stark reminder of the hours he had spent lost in his work. He glanced around the cluttered room, his eyes landing on the tower of empty instant noodle cups and crumpled chip bags scattered across the floor. A heavy sigh escaped him, mirroring the emptiness in his eyes—a silent testament to countless nights of exhaustion and solitude.
'I'm hungry! I'll just grab something to eat at the convenience store.'
Haruto thought as he pushed himself away from his desk, stretching the stiffness of his limbs. Making his way downstairs, he checkedthefridge, hopeful for a quick snack.
Finding it nearly empty, he realized that his parents on vacation overseas with his younger sister, leaving him with the responsibility of managing the house all by himself. The quiet of the house reminded him of their absence, filling him with a mix of independence and solitude.
His parents stood by the door, their suitcases packed and ready. "Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" His mom asked, her voice tinged with concerns.
He smiled, leaning casually against the doorframe. "I'll be alright," he assured them. "Besides, I've got a few things I want to finish off here, and it will be nice to have a some quiet time."
His dad raised an eyebrow, glancing at the video game console left running on the desk. "Alright, but give us a call if you need anything."
"I promise I won't forget. Enjoy your trip!" He chuckled, shrugging.
As the car pulled away, he watched as it disappear down the street, feeling a sense of relief. Finally, he had the house all to himself and time to do as he pleased.
He opened the fridge and sighed 'I knew it. There is nothing in here,' he muttered. 'I should have stocked up on some groceries.' The shelves were bare, save for a few unappealing leftover.
Feeling too lazy to cook, he decided to head out to the convenience store instead.
"Thank you for shopping here!" The cashier said with a friendly smile.
"Welcome," Haruto replied, taking his bag and heading out of the store. He carried his snacks and some other groceries, feeling a contented buzz as he walked home.
As he navigated through the crowd, a flash of recognition stopped him in his tracks. Amid the sea of faces, he spotted a familiar figure—one he hadn't expected to see here. It was a girl from his class, her silhouette district even in the dim streetlights.
He blinked, puzzled. It was already dark, and seeing someone from his school out so late, especially someone like her, felt oddly out of place.
'Misaki-chan? What is she doing all alone at this time? I thought that the school's festival had ended earlier in the afternoon...' He wondered.
Misaki is the most popular and prettiest girl in Haruto's school. Almost all the boys have a crush on her, including Haruto himself. Although she's popular, it doesn't affect the way she treats people.
Screams pierced the night's air, cutting through the bustling streets where people were either heading home from work or having a night out with friends. Amid the clamor, a car hurtled down the road, its headlights slicing through the darkness. The vehicle swerved dangerously toward a group of pedestrians, Misaki among them, caught off-guard by the approaching menace.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"Watch out, Misaki-chann!!" Haruto yelled out, to get her attention. He dived in front of the car, pushing her out of the car's way.
(Car brakes)
'Well, I guess it's probably the end for me. At least I get to save a beauty like Misaki..'
Haruto lay in a pool of blood, the warm, sticky liquid soaking into the pavement beneath him. His vision blurred as he turned his head to face Misaki, her face streaked with tears.
"Are you okay, Haruto-kun?" She asked, her voice trembling as tears spilled onto his face.
He managed to faint smile, though the effort made him wince. "Heh,I'll be alright.Don't worry about me."
Misaki's grip tightened on his hand, her voice chocked with emotion. "Good to hear. Just stay with me!"
Haruto's strength waned, making it harder to form words. "B-B-but are you okay?" he rasped, his voice barely a whisper.
Misaki's tearful smile was the only response he needed, reassuring him that she was fine, even if tears were flowing down her cheeks.
Suddenly his consciousness began to fade away, with every second that passed by his consciousness drifted. He tried to fight against the cold arms of death, but he found it difficult. The last thing he saw before his consciousness faded away was the crying face of his crush, Misaki.
"Somebody call an ambulance!"
.......
"....."
Later, Haruto woke up in a dark, unrecognizable place, submerged in a water-like state. He couldn't feel his body.
'Where am I?' he wondered.
'Is this what dying feels like?"
Haruto was in a state of confusion. To make things worse, he couldn't fulfill his dreams. All the precious memories he'd made with his family and close friends, all the good times he had with his friends, and all the things he wished he'd done while he was still alive flashed before him.
'I can't feel my body or my heartbeat...' he thought.
'If I die and become a ghost, what will befall me? Will I wander around? It's a headache. I'm frustrated... I should've gone with my parents!'
Nothing made any sense to him in that moment. On one hand, he's dead, and on the other hand, this could all be a nightmare and he would wake up on his bed in the morning. He tried to move his body, but his body refused to obey his commands. He felt like he was floating around in space, lacking the ability to move his hands and feet.
He felt all alone with the darkness for company, as the darkness threatened to consume his entire body. The feeling of loneliness persisted.
'I hope Misaki is doing alright. I hope you didn't get traumatized..' He thought.
Suddenly he began to regain consciousness, his body enveloped in light, the feeling of warmth taking over him as the strange light carried him. He found himself in a strange room surrounded by many people eagerly waiting. The first thing Haruto saw was an old man flashing a light in his eyes; the light floated around the palm of his hand.
Haruto blinked, trying to clear his vision and make sense of the scene before him. The room was adorned with intricate tapestries and glowing orbs that hovered mid-air, casting a soft, ethereal glow. Whispers filled the air as the onlookers exchanged glances and murmured amongst themselves.
The room was old fashioned and looked like the rooms in the old castle that are in Europe, or like a picture you'd see on the internet and paintings.
"Well, doctor, how is our son's condition?" A woman's voice asked the old man who wore a lab coat.
"I hope there isn't anything wrong with the recovery magic that was used," a male's voice chimed in.
'Hmm... where am I...? Wasn't I dead a few seconds ago? This must be an illusion or something...'
'Wait, did he just say "Magic"? I must be misunderstanding something here!'
He tried to figure out how he got to this place. At one point he had been in a dark watery realm, but now he was in a room surrounded by people...
The room wasn't the hospital or anywhere he knew. It was an ordinary room built for a person of high status.
"Ah, your son is doing well and recovering. Please ensure that he receives adequate care," the doctor explained. "And please give him something to eat or drink."
"Yes, I will make sure of that!" The man exclaimed.
The doctor left the room after running some more examinations and checkups on Haruto. But the couple remained in the room with a couple of maids.
"Oh, finally you're awake.." The woman said as she got closer to Haruto.
'Wha, who are you people? And where am I?'
The woman hugged him and said, "Finally you're awake, Leon dear." And the man who was standing next to her joined in too.
'So that means that these two are my new parents? Hmm, I guess I must be isekai'd, then?'
Haruto couldn't believe that he was reborn in another world. He was totally confused about the event taking place in front of him.
It felt strange to him...
