Even for this outing with Ms. Sophie, Mr. Gordon had burned the midnight oil, working several late nights just to handle the Aldridge family's top brass. Why would he suddenly change his plans now?
Rick knew he shouldn't meddle in Gordon's personal affairs, but he couldn't keep quiet. "Sir, Ms. Sophie really wants to go to the amusement park with you. No one else can fill your shoes. If you back out, she'll be heartbroken." With that, Rick turned on his heel and left Gordon's study. Gordon, who had been engrossed in his book, looked up once Rick was gone.
Before long, afternoon had arrived. Sophie stood in front of the mirror, twirling with delight. The dress she wore was a recent gift from her brother.
Since she was little, her brother had always picked out her clothes. He knew her style better than anyone and would go out of his way to make her happy. The thought brought a warm smile to her face.
As she grew older, her brother's time with her became less frequent.
"Miss Sophie, someone's here to pick you up."
"Okay, I'm coming!"
Sophie gave her hair a quick touch-up and dashed downstairs. But when she reached the front of the Russell family estate, it wasn't Gordon's car she saw-it was Colby's.
Colby was casually leaning against the car, waiting patiently. Seeing him, Sophie's brows knitted in confusion.
"What are you doing here? Where's my brother?"
Her face was a mix of suspicion and annoyance.
"Something came up for Gordon, so he couldn't make it," Colby explained, opening the car door. "He asked me to take you to the amusement park and stay with you till it shuts." "Why should I go with you? I don't want your company."
Sophie didn't bother hiding her displeasure and turned to head back inside, but Colby quickly caught her by the arm and gently pulled her back.
Startled, Sophie let out a small scream. When she gathered her wits, she realized she was already seated in the car.

Colby slid into the driver's seat with ease. He drove smoothly, though his speed was carefully maintained.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Sophie
grumbled, "Why did my brother send you? Are you two buddies or something?"
"Ask him."
"My brother says he barely knows you!"
"Then he barely knows me."
"I don't like you!"
"I don't need you to like me."
"You!"
Sophie's expression darkened, and finally, she threw a bit of a tantrum. "I want out of this car!" "Are you sure about that?"
Colby pulled over abruptly. Just as Sophie reached for the door handle, he remarked, "Wandering around in high heels, a lady like you is sure to attract some unwanted attention. I heard you never go out without a squad of bodyguards. Think you can handle it alone?"
"I..."
Sophie hesitated, then muttered, "I can't. I'll call my brother to come get me."
"He's swamped and can't come."
"You're lying! My brother cares about me more than anything. He'd never lie to me!"
