Chapter 145 The Lady of Love.
I’m Love, Lust, Adventure and Wonder.
I’m Dreams come true, and a Fantasy in the making.
I’m a Pinch of Sugar in a Harsh Reality.
Yet you can only taste me for a Few Moments,
before I go down your Throat.
Koshavi, the Love Fairy of Long Lost Winds.
I glare at the Goddess who had descended upon our party. The overly attractive woman with the dark skin and smoky gray eyes smiles suggestively and tucks a long flock of silvery hair behind her sharp tipped ear.
“I don’t know what you’re scheming about me and Kolag or what you’re hoping to achieve by coming here, but whatever it is you’re offering, I’m not interested.”
“Oh? Have I done anything to offend you? Or am I merely treated with hostility for what I am?” The Goddess crosses her hands under her full breasts and raises a curved eyebrow. “I’m here because you said it’d be better if I came to meet Kolag and you face to face instead of using a mediator like Salik to ensure your love for each other grows.”
Right… “Why do you even care about me and Kolag? It’s not like I’ll ever worship you…”
Kolag steps between me and Koshavi, the claymore in his hands pointing at the goddess. I love him for not kneeling to her. Rot, I love how he points his sword at her to protect me. I doubt he can do anything to her, but it’s the gesture that counts.
“Maybe you will worship me in the future, who knows. And Kolag here already worships me.” She smiles warmly at my boyfriend. “Hello Kolag, keep that sword up and pointed at me, Marisha loves you for it so don’t lower it for a second.” She uncrosses her hands and flickers her hair with a pout I’d expect from a teenager. “You see, I take it as my personal responsibility to secure the love life of the people who worship me or at least to give them a good chance at love. I may have a touch of influence over fate, but I don’t control people’s choices. I’m here in person to alleviate any doubt you as Kolag’s significant other might have about my so called schemes. You said that if I want any semblance of trust from you that I should come in person and talk to you about what I want, so here I am in person.”
I can’t even argue with that… “Ok. Then what do you want from us?”
“Before I state what I want, can you tell me who taught you that ceremony, little Marisha?”
“No.” I’m not betraying Sharla. Not before I hear a full explanation for this. “You can tell us what you want now.”
“I want your trust as a start.” Never! “But I know I won’t have it, not yet, trust is earned. Should you ever trust me enough to come to my temple, there’s a lot we need to talk about, a lot I can tell you there. I hope you come soon, there won’t always be time for it. Can you at least give me the benefit of the doubt for the time being?”
“Go on.”
“I want you two to love each other. I want… Kolag?”
“Yes?”
“Kill Marisha.”
“Never!” he declares defiantly. "I refused Noxi, and I'll..."
She cuts him off with a snicker and a sharp gesture. “Yes. That’s what I dream about. I wish for your love to be stronger than the order of a god even my own orders. And I want it to stay that way for the rest of your lives. I want you two to be happy together. I want you to stop seeing the other as a possible liability or a threat just because he or she worships or doesn’t worship some god. And I want to kick Noxi’s fat arse for what he did to you two.”
Can she stop talk about our love in front of all of these people? Seriously, what is she after? What is her end goal? Why us?
Kolag lowers his sword slowly.
Oh great… She already sold whatever it is to Kolag...
“Keep that sword up and pointed at me, Kolag.”
He fixes his sword on her and glances back at me.
Really? That’s a low blow… “You can sheath the damn thing, Kolag, it’s not like it can harm her. Thank you for pointing it at her earlier though.” I pat his shoulder and step forward to face Koshavi. “Is that all you want from us?”
“I wish to take Kolag as my chosen, if you two are willing. To refuse the order of a god for the sake of love is no small feat, and naturally I have taken notice. However, this is an offer to the both of you. If there’s no mutual agreement I will not do so.”
Nice of her to include me in this at least…
The goddess turns her head to my armored boyfriend. “Kolag, if you become my chosen, I shall provide you with a room in any of my temples. A room where you can safely practice control over your demon. In addition…”
“How about you take his demon out entirely?” I cut her off. "You're a goddess, can you not do that?"
She smiles gently, as if my interruption was a mild amusement to her. “I can, but I won't. If I do that it'll make Kolag extremely vulnerable. He’ll die within the year if he’s unprotected. Besides, you grow in power every day, Marisha, it is only fair that he grows in power alongside you. Instead of removing the demon, I offer the training to have full control over it. A couple who have a large gap in power is prone to… Unhappiness shall we say. While some people can live their lives alongside a powerful significant other, none of your personalities will be content to be so weak while the other is so strong. No. I am here to ensure your love lasts for as long as I can. In addition, Kolag’s demon will prolong his lifespan. If I am to take it out, Kolag will be an old man in sixty years while you are still a young woman at least in body and appearance.”
Right… It’s hard to argue with that as well… Ugh what does she want in exchange???
She curls her hair around a slender fingers and turns back to Kolag. “Again. Should you become my chosen, Kolag, you shall have a secured room in each and every one of my temples to learn control over your demon. It won’t be easy, learning to control such an abomination is a harsh task, but it is doable. In addition, should your faith in me increase and our connection strengthen, you shall receive abilities from my wind, luck, and love domains as my paladin. The power of cutting winds, charming your enemies, blessings or curses of luck, and even flight. All within your grasp.”
“I…” Kolag starts, but the Goddess stops him.
“Don’t answer me now. Sleep on it. Take your time. Reach an agreement with the love of your life, and then come to one of my temples and I shall accept you.”
“I have another request, as your chosen.”
“You ask for more in addition to everything I’ve already offered you? Do go on. I want to hear this.”
“I want to remember Marisha’s name after you’re gone. I want to be able to say it. And I do not want it to put her in any risk.”
“Awwww!!!" The Goddess gushes over us like a teenaged girl who saw a fluffy animal. "That, my dear, I’ll grant you whether you become my chosen or not. Little Marisha deserves someone who can call her by her name. You’ll remember her name, and every time you use it the rest of the world will hear ‘Inara’. Likewise, despite the crowd around us, they cannot hear Marisha’s name. I’m not here to jeopardize your name, Marisha.”
Damn she’s way too nice! I can't even be mean to her without feeling like a total bitch...
Don’t be fooled by that. Janara was all too nice when we first met too, and they both have a clear ulterior motive.
“Thank you, milady,” Kolag says with a deep low bow.
“You’re most welcome, my dear. Now, before I go. Marisha? Would you be willing to tell me who taught you a wedding ceremony that belongs to the ancient Fae and no one had used for thousands of years?”
Ah, there it is… “No. I don’t think I will. Not without context to why you care so much about who taught me this, and even with context I can’t make any promises.” I’m not betraying Sharla! Even if Sharla betrayed me, I'm going to give her a chance to explain first...
“Context. Very well. Let me give you some. This ceremony invokes the Twilights.” The Goddess raises two slender fingers. “Long ago there were two Twilights.” She pats on her chest. “One was myself, the other was an ancient Fae Monarch who happens to have a deep seated hatred for me.” The hand on her chest turns into a shaking clenched fist. “The Twilight stars are no more. Both of us would take grave offense at the name ‘Twilights’ being invoked again after all this time, and you clearly did not know what the name means. Whoever taught you that ceremony wanted to lure the both of us here for a grand fight. It is most fortunate that the other Twilight chose not to come, or all of the people present would be dead, and daddy Lokamesh would’ve woken up from his deep sleep. Something the world does not need right now.”
Right… You have a lot of explaining to do, Sharla… Or Koshavi is lying to get answers out of me. “I’m still not telling you who taught me this, for all I know you could be making this up.”
“Lokamesh is asleep?” Kolag asks.
“Oh yes. With a single brief exception, daddy Lok lok is asleep for over a millennia now. None of the gods wish for him to wake up. He tends to have too many rules when he’s awake. When he’s asleep there’s only one rule, gods are not allowed to kill mortals directly, simple, right?”
“Isn’t he supposed to ensure peace between the gods?” Kolag questions.
“Oh… Sweetheart. Asleep or not, he ensures peace by merely existing.” She turns to me. “Marisha, if you chose to trust me and come to my temple, it needs to be before Lokamesh wakes up again. Once he awakes there’s not much I can do to help anymore.”
Right, so there’s the time table to pressure me. “You’re expecting him to wake up soon?”
“Possibly. A lot can happen that will wake him, but I can’t know when or if any of that will happen for sure. I’m not the Lord of Time. Will you still not tell me who taught you that particular ceremony, Marisha?”
I can trust her... She's just so... NO! I WILL NEVER TRUST A GODDESS! “No. I just met you, I’m not sure whether or not I can trust you yet, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, for Kolag’s sake.”
“Very well. Trust is earned and I will earn it. Good luck you two. Please think about my offer. Sleep on it for a few days. Make your choice, and come to me once you do.”
The Goddess disappears in a breeze and I note that my garden is sprouting an assortment of beautiful flowers I’ve never seen before.
*
“Koshavi herself!”
“—My word…”
“—Hail the Lady of Skies.”
“—Please bless me with a healthy child, Koshavi!”
—O Koshavi, let me meet the one true love.”
I look around in the goddess stricken crowd, searching for Sharla, but there’s no sign of her. My eyes meet my prophet's frown. “Jerro! Where is Sharla?”
“She went to the dungeon below the palace. What’s she’s doing in there I cannot tell you," he replies indifferently.
I cross my hands and get into his personal space. “Why? What is she doing there that you’re hiding?”
He doesn’t flinch, a flash of understanding goes through his brown eyes. “Oh. Forgive me, Queen, I misspoke. I cannot tell you because I do not know. I cannot see the future below ground as my god’s influence does not reach there.”
Ah. Of course. He did mention that before. Makes sense. If Tiyadi can't see below ground, Koshavi can't either, no wonder Sharla is hiding there. I turn sharply and head for the dungeon with a hurried step. Kolag, Salik, Zoe, Ryon, Jerro, Berthold and Ovin following along.
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
“Never boring around here, is it,” Salik remarks sarcastically.
Ovin chuckles. “If I had known yo’ll be so fun I woulda travel north sooner.”
Ryon nods sagely. “Ye, Goddess and she devil playing games. And now a fairy freak too.”
“Fairies aren’t freaks! You don’t even know anything about fairies, city kid,” Berthold retorts angrily.
“Nah ah, I know plenty. Town has this freak fairy girl who eat da hair off people’s belly button while they sleep. Fairies are freaks.” Ryon's detailed elaboration would earn a reaction from me any other day but today.
“You don’t know anything! Not all…”
I shut out the animated argument behind me and step faster through the castle halls for the dungeon.
The darkened dungeon is built from featureless gray stones and all the cells are open and vacant. I pass them one by one until I find Sharla chained up in the last one.
“Sharla. You have a lot of explaining to do, you better start talking.”
Sharla is wearing her Fae form, autumn leaves dress shedding a few dried crimson leaves on the dirty dungeon floor. Bronze chains hold her wrists and a collar is tightened around her fragile neck. “I’m at your pleasure, Your Majesty. What do you want me to talk about?”
“Can you tell me why you gave me an ancient Fae ceremony that would provoke a Goddess and some ancient Fae being while disguising it as a wedding ceremony?”
She grins madly, and after a blink her smile stretches all the way to her temple in an inhuman expression. The others who can see into the dungeon flinch and back off, but this smile looks awfully familiar to me, despite its apparent monstrosity. “Oh wow, the Serpent of Love didn’t hold back at all, did she? I never imagined she’d tell you or anyone exactly what that ceremony was. It had to hurt, how mad was she?”
“That wasn’t an answer. That was a confirmation. Please tell me she was lying, Sharla.”
She shakes her head, her mad unnatural smile still plastered on her artificial looking face. “But she wasn’t. In my defense, it is a legitimate wedding ceremony. I did it to make a friend happy. Another friend I mean, not you. And you were never in any danger despite what...”
“Not according to what Kosh…”
Sharla’s abrupt shriek silences the word on my lips. I wince and look at her. What was she trying to do by screaming like that? “Stop screaming and tell me.”
She nods in her bronze collar, her smile disappearing into her neutral gentle expression I’ve known for a while now. “I will. But first, don’t mention Lady Love’s name, or any name of a God or a Goddess for that matter. Using their names calls their attention on us. Why do you think I’m underground? It’s a place Lady Love can’t see being the Goddess of Wind and all that.”
I cross my hands. “Very well. It still doesn’t excuse putting me and the whole city in harm’s way.”
“The Serpent of Love wouldn’t hurt you, you’re too valuable to her alive, nor would the other Twilight hurt you, it was actually done on her request.”
“Oh? And what does this— Twilight want with me?”
“I’m not sure really. I’m to tell them if any of the major gods make contact with you, I’m to distance myself if the Mother of all Demons, the Lord of Creations, or the Peacebringer make contact with you. And if I’m able to use you somehow to anger and provoke Lady Love, Mother Dragon, Lady Life, or the Lord of Light, I am to do so even if it leads to you knowing about their meddling.”
“Them? Who is that Twilight?”
“Twilight is one of the stronger Fae Monarchs. There are group of Fae Monarchs who are very interested in you and she represents their coalition. She has many names. You can call her the Maiden of Darkness if you want.”
Kolag clears his throat. “Sounds ominous. Do you Worship this Maiden of Darkness?”
“Worshiping? Nah, she’s not a foul Goddess. She’s more like a friend and we’re doing each other a favor.”
Salik crosses his hands leaning on the wall of the cell almost squeezing in the tight space. “And what kind of favor is she doing for you?”
“Um… I’d rather not say?” She gives us a large fake smile, starry eyes blinking rapidly.
“You’ll tell us everything, or you’ll leave our group, Sharla,” I insist.
“Can’t a girl have her secrets?” She pouts and averts her gaze with a fake sniff.
“Not today, not after what you pulled. You should be thankful I’m here asking questions instead of casting spells or out right telling Lady Love who taught me that ceremony, she did ask.”
Sharla licks her lips. “Aw fine. I tried. She promised to free me from the… From the one you call the hag if I carry a few tasks for her.”
I roll my eyes. “Some friend. A friend would’ve freed you first and asked for favors later. She’d also let you choose whether you want to help or not. I am your friend."
Sharla shrugs lightly. “You can't really free me, can you? Nothing’s free in this world, we’re doing favors for each other, right? So what now? Will you kill me? Will you finally cast me out of your little group? You don't want me as a friend anymore, do you?” She sounds eager, not terrified. Her starry eyes are hard to read due to the lack of pupil, and I catch a falling star crossing the tiny version of the night's sky in her eyes.
“No. You’re still my friend, and you’re still under someone else’s control. I’ll stay your friend until you’re free to decide what you want to do. You’re all my family to me, I said it and I mean it. Family is family, I won't hurt you no matter what. Actually, I will hurt you a lot if you kill someone else I care about, but otherwise I'll accept you no matter what your crime is. I won’t trust you, Sharla. Not after this. But I also won’t throw you away or kill you because someone is using you. If you want to start making it up to me, you better eliminate that assassin guild in Sajarev with Jerro.”
“Marisha? What if she wants to leave?” Kolag asks.
I pause for a moment, hearing him using my real name is an odd feeling. “She’s free to do so of course, but I doubt the hag will let her. Sharla, you sounded eager. If I release you from my service, will the hag leave you alone? Do you want me to release you?”
She shakes her head with a frown. “No… I supposed not… I was... I was hoping you'd hate me, not this...”
Ryon squeezes himself between Kolag’s armor and Salik into the tiny dungeon cell, followed by a loud tactless fart. “Oy, tiny jugs, there’s this devil lady who gives me candy to rat stuff about you.”
Kolag slaps the back of his head and Ryon would’ve fallen if not for the nearby wall.
“What?!” I turn around sharply.
“Ow! What was that for? Metal freak! Ye, I rat stuff about you for candy and magic tricks. The old scary lady with da’ weird laugh wanna know stuff too.”
Right… “And you just tell her?”
“Ye. Me? She'd kill me if I say no. I’m no dummy, I don’ wanna die for ya, ye?”
“Then why tell me?”
He looks at me as if I asked a stupid question. “'Cause you a dummy, you don’ kill me for knowing it.”
“I guess I am, and no, I won’t kill you for being forced into spying on me.” Some family we are… I turn to the rest of my group who are mostly outside of the cell, Kolag and Salik in the entrance. An amused smile plastered on Salik’s face. “Anyone else want to confess? Ovin, who are you reporting to?”
“I worship Ra-“ Sharla shrieks again but he ignores her and continues slowly. Sharla's hand stretches beyond what's humanly possible in an attempt to block his mouth, but he catches her hand and continue like he had never been interrupted in the first place. “Rakisha, but my Goddess never responded to my prayers nor asked for any reports.”
“Will you tell me if she did?”
“No.”
Some family…
“What about you, Salik?”
Salik raises his thick eyebrows. “Hey, don’t look at me like that, kid. I was the one telling you I wouldn’t cut a deal with a Goddess, remember?”
True... At least there's someone here I can count on... “Yeah, sorry, you’re a good man, Salik. Zoe? What about you? If this Jalier asked you to tell him stuff about me, to spy on me… Would you?”
She wiggles uncomfortably. “I don’t know, Master…”
Some family…
“Jerro? Are you reporting everything to Tiyadi?”
“Yes, but I don’t have to. He already knows everything there’s to know about you. I’m loyal to my lord first and to you second, Queen," he states coldly.
Some family…
“What about you, Berthold. How is Tonisha doing nowdays?”
The scrawny man scratches the back of his head “I wouldn’t know. I stopped worshiping her a while ago…”
“Oh that’s some good news at least… Oh and Jolla is probably Tukado’s spy. Rotten gods everywhere.”
“You forgot the Fae Monarchs coalition,” Sharla adds with a grin somehow free of her shackles by now.
“And devil lady,” Ryon nods.
“Who is the devil lady, Ryon? What’s her name?”
“Dunno. She has big horns like this.” He imitates long curly horns above his head. “Five eyes, like on her forehead and cheeks, and white salt skin. She a devil freak. Dunno her real name. Her street name is Hot Iron.”
Right.
“I didn’t know devils have street names…” Ovin remarks, amusement in his voice.
“Ye. That’s what she told me to call her. No one’s name is Hot Iron, gotta be a street name, ye?”
I raise an eyebrow. “What kind of candy is she giving you?”
A large sweet smile overcome his boyish face. “The tip of her big jugs. She got those b...”
Yuck “Ok, I’ve heard enough. Out! I need to get out of this cell. Make way!” Kolag and Salik back off and I make my way out of the dungeon, leaving behind a confused group.
*
I climb up to the third floor and my chambers and lock myself inside.
The gods, ancient Fae, Devils, powerful beings who can shape the world itself, all focused on me. The hag and the Sapphire Tower are nothing but a mere joke. How did I even get here? How did I reach this state?! It’s all Kolag! Kolag and his stupid god brought all this attention to us! Why me?! Why did I have to fall in love with that idiot?! I find myself hyperventilating in pure fear.
I ought to kill them all right snaking now! They don't care about me. None of them see me as family the way I do. They all have their loyalty to whatever snowy god they worship and can all turn me at the word of their god.
I clench my eyes shut, leaning back on my bed.
Ok. Breathe. It's not like any of them act directly. It's not like I can do anything about it. This can't be just Kolag. Kolag was used as a pawn just like Sharla and Ryon. The only difference is that Kolag is dumb enough to not believe he's being a pawn...
No. None of these ancient beings with the exception of Koshavi and Noxi have acted directly, but they're all using my friends and I’ve had enough of mixed loyalties.
It’s not like I can do anything about it, the people who follow me have their own problems. Family means accepting them with their problems.
What are they scheming? Those ancient beings, why are they so concerned with me? First Noxi, I thought Noxi was just a fluke, but no, now that Koshavi meddles too, this Twilight lady and that Hot Iron whoever she is... It can’t possibly be just a random accident that Noxi picked Kolag as his chosen. What in the world is going on? Why me? Does it have to do with my mother? Does this Fae collation know my grandmother somehow? Or is she a part of them? And if so, why use me as their mean in their dispute with Koshavi? Wouldn’t gaining my trust be more important?
Not necessarily. I don’t know the rules of this game. Noxi didn’t care one bit about my trust and I can assume the same applies to whatever the Fae want… Koshavi however… Koshavi clearly wants me to trust her, and so does Tiyadi. Why?
If anything, those two scare me more than Noxi or the Fae. As scary as having Gods as enemies, they can’t directly harm me… But I don’t think I’d feel comfortable with trusting a God… And I trust too easily, with all of my paranoia I just trust my so called family to have my back like a snaking stupid child… Yet half of them are spies and I doubt they’re even my friends… Koshavi could easily gain my trust and then use me for whatever she plans… I can’t let that happen! I won’t! I WON’T! I won't be controlled by those filthy gods!
I will kill all of their rotten pawns! I'll end it! They're either my pawns or they're dead!
Or I can earn them as my pawns again... I can compete with the gods for their loyalty. Yes, I made Noxi lose his very valuable pawn at the best most critical moment! I'm simply going to do the same for each and every one of them. I will turn them on the god or ancient being they serve. I'll turn it into a full on betrayal streak!
Let's see... Jerro is controlled by Sharla, and I have some control over Sharla's actions. I can order her to be with him at the right moment to turn him against his god.
Sharla wants freedom from what she says. In reality, she wants people to feel sorry for her. I'll feel sorry for her so much she'll become addicted to me.
Berthold wants to cure his mother. And now that he believes he's going home no matter what he does, he's no longer as obedient as he was before. Threats can work, but it's too simple. No. I have to constantly dangle his mother in front of him like a bone for a good little dog...
Salik and Kolag are already good little pawns. Salik is a slave to his glitter which is the perfect pawn, and Kolag loves me more than he loves his precious gods.
Zoe wants magic. As long as I'm her only source for new magical discovery, she'd even turn on her precious Jalier. The problem is that Jalier can offer the same. And this is where Salik comes in and keeps her short. He's her other weakness.
Now I have to figure how to control Ovin and Ryon.
Enough! They aren't pawns, they're my friends. They're family.
Keep telling yourself that... Sure is convincing. No. They want to be good pawns to the gods, I'll just fix the gods part. Yes...
A knock on the door and Salik's bushy eyebrows peeks in, ready to back off as if he's afraid I'm indecent. Once he sees I'm still dressed, he enters the room. "Hey, kid."
Good little pawn, running to his mistress to help... Now go away, shoo! I'm busy thinking... "Unless you have a way of removing the attention of all the snaking gods from me, I don’t want to hear it,” I say, still trying to calm down my panicked breath.
He smiles bitterly and shakes his head. "I don't. But I do have the experience of someone who's been in your shoes once upon a time. I'd be more than happy to share if it helps your current predicament."
"I'm listening."
"Not here. I... I've never been comfortable talking in some posh room. Come on, follow me." He turns and walks slowly down the hallway, like the old man he doesn't look like anymore.
