Chapter 20 - PvP, Fishing & getting Corporal

Alterac Valley, the grand battleground of Vanilla WoW, has a history that’s as sprawling as its battlefield. It was once a prosperous region in the Eastern Kingdoms until the conflict between the Horde and Alliance turned it into a war zone. The valley, now a battleground for dominance, features dense forests, icy peaks, and endless fields where the battle for control rages on.

In this chaotic setting, players can engage in epic battles where objectives include capturing enemy bases, defeating commanders, and securing strategic locations. The battles could drag on for an entire day or even two, a marathon of conflict that tested the endurance of every participant.

While Kersey was grinding away to achieve the coveted Knight Captain rank, I, fresh off a successful stint as a priest in an up-and-coming raid guild, had to master fishing and cooking. Because nothing says “I’m ready for high-stakes raids” like catching fish in Darnassus and making sure I had enough cooking skill to whip up some epic feasts.

Our fishing sessions were legendary—or at least, that’s what we told ourselves. Darnassus was supposed to be a tranquil place, but when you’re stuck fishing for hours on end, even the most serene environment can start to get on your nerves.

Kersey: “Another day, another fish that isn’t a boot. Maybe we’re just fishing in the wrong spot.”

Me: “Or maybe the fish have started a protest. ‘We refuse to be caught!’”

We spent so much time fishing that the locals began to recognize us as “those weirdos who are always trying to catch the invisible fish.” The moment a fish was caught, it was either something useless or something Kersey would immediately turn into a running gag.

Kersey: “I caught another boot. Guess I’ll be opening a footwear store soon.”

Me: “Great. Now I just need a fish tank to hold all these bootfish I’m collecting.”

Our fishing escapades were only the appetizer before the main course: Alterac Valley (AV). Vanilla AV was the ultimate test of stamina and strategy, where battles could drag on for a whole day—or even two. Imagine a sprawling battlefield that’s part war zone, part endurance test, and you’ll have AV in a nutshell.

Kersey: “I heard a rumor that AV is so long, they need a calendar just to track how long the matches last.”

Me: “Yeah, and you get a badge of honor just for surviving the first hour. Anything beyond that is a bonus.”

Entering AV for the first time was like walking into a never-ending chaotic symphony. The sheer scale of the battlefield, with its dense forests, snowy peaks, and endless fields of battle, was overwhelming. It felt like every corner you turned, you were about to stumble into another ambush.

Me, in party chat: “I’m in AV now. Just found a nice cozy spot under a bridge where I’m trying to blend in with the rubble.”

Kersey: “Perfect! Hide under that bridge and don’t come out until it’s over. You’ll make it through the day without a scratch!”

Of course, hiding under bridges wasn’t exactly the heroic path, but it was effective. I quickly learned that staying alive often meant avoiding the front lines and finding creative ways to stay out of sight.

Me: “I’ve set up camp under this bridge with a few stray NPCs. They’re not much for conversation, but they don’t mind my company.”

Kersey: “Nice. You’ll fit right in. Just remember not to try any sneaky moves while you’re in hiding!”

Despite my best attempts to be a courageous warrior, I eventually managed to achieve the rank of Corporal. It took a lot of dodging and weaving, but I made it. The journey from nervous hide-and-seek artist to battle-hardened soldier was a long one, but it was worth every bit of effort.

Kersey: “Look at you now, Corporal! Remember when you used to hide under the bridge? Good times.”

Me: “And remember when I thought fishing would be the easy part? Turns out, both fishing and AV are more about surviving the madness than anything else.”

So there we were, a priest who had spent more time hiding than fighting, and a Knight Captain who had mastered the art of fishing in the most unlikely of places. Despite the endless battles, the fishing mishaps, and the occasional bridge-dwelling, it all made for one epic, laughter-filled adventure.
