Selfishness

William stood on top of a three-floored building, kneeling bent, like a wolf, staring at their prey in the moonlight. His aim had not been war from the start. His goal was the riches brought by the war.

It would make him extremely happy to encounter the spirit stone mountain in the tower opposite him, as he had encountered the previous one.

He looked under the tower. He saw dozens of soldiers around him. He didn't care about their lives, but he didn't want to take lives unnecessarily. It was an absurd habit from his old world, empathy. He knew that they too might have a family waiting at home. But it wouldn't be nice if someone more powerful than himself killed him without question. That's why he wanted to give it a chance.

He knew that what he was about to do would be extremely stupid and unnecessary. He was aware of this. Maybe he was already tired.

As far as he felt from the men around the tower, there was no one among them strong except for two iron levels. Killing them was a piece of cake for William.

He jumped from the third floor. He landed on the ground like a bird. The tower's guards had noticed his descent. They immediately took up their spears.

William's firebringer was at his waist. He was holding the sheath with one hand and the hilt with the other, waiting. He could see the sweat-drenched fearful faces of about twenty or so soldiers. Their scent was particularly appealing, giving him the feeling of a ready-made steak at his table.

As he took a few steps, one of the soldiers shouted. "Stop! This is a forbidden zone! You can't come here!” said. They all pointed their weapons. They thrust their spears forward, anxiously hoping William would stop.

William just smiled at them. Then he stopped walking towards them. He spread his hands to the sides and spoke innocently. “Guys, how about if you let me pass?” He gestured to the ongoing battlefield behind him, at the east gate. “You see, the situation there is not very encouraging.” Said.

Soldiers didn't know what to do for a moment. One of them wanted to turn to the door behind them and say something, but halfway through, he froze, as if something had occurred to him. Not only he, but the soldiers staring at him in front of William also froze. They all rushed forward with sad, tearful expressions, intending to thrust their spears at William.

William was taken aback by what had happened. Everything was going well before. He found it strange that the soldiers suddenly reluctantly attacked him with hostility. At that moment, a symbol appeared on the foreheads of the soldiers that did not exist before. It was a symbol of a two-bladed sword. It shone with golden-yellow light like daylight.

William frowned. 'Some kind of contract?' he thought. Even the heaviest contract they used in their own families did not involve forcing men. Yet their will was there. But here, it was just the opposite. Their faces said they didn't want to attack, but their body language said otherwise.

William sighed helplessly. He guessed that this probably had something to do with the mage inside. “Sorry guys.” He said and pulled the firebringer.

He made sure that they died as painlessly as possible. William felt himself starting to feel a little numb. It was as if he was cutting a straw target. Not being able to catch his speed, he killed twenty soldiers in the blink of an eye.

Since they were already under a heavy contract, he hadn't even blinked while killing them. He thought that killing these people cleanly and painlessly was the same as helping them. As for the one who forced them into this situation, anger rose in him.

It was anger, similar to the occasional bad thought that came to his mind. It started after the Moon-swallowing Wolf's bloodline got its power. From Reyis's words, he thought that he shouldn't worry, but things were not going as he had expected. He felt that he too was affected by this situation.

William did not put his sword back in its sheath. He carefully approached the door. The danger he felt from within was not as great as the mage he had killed in the previous tower.

He opened the door all the way with a kick. The scene he saw shocked him.

Inside, a blond-haired man in his twenties was running back and forth, packing soul stones, bookshelves, and anything else that seemed valuable into his dimensional bag.

“Fuck!” the man said as William kicked the door open. He turned to the door. He cast a spell when he saw the well-built and handsome William in leather armor. He then continued to collect soul stones as if he was completely safe.

William was extremely surprised. 'What is he doing?' he thought. The young mage before him had cast an invisibility spell just like Arthur, but his strength was pitifully weak. It was so weak that William could vaguely see him outlines in the glass cup, like a pencil in the water. The light around him was refracted. William felt that his intelligence and strength had been underestimated. He could even easily see the soul stones slowly disappearing. But he made no sound. He just watched the man empty the tower.

In a short time, the man had emptied the entire tower. He left a hundred soul stones under the small seal where only the defensive magic was. This seal was very different from the one he found in the other tower. It was just a Hexagonal metal plate. A few symbols were carved on it, but it did not look as beautiful as the other.

After the young man had cleared the entire tower, he headed for the door where William was. He was moving very slowly and carefully. William felt he had to play with him. He continued to stare at the place where the soul stones were. The young man thought that William had not noticed him. He tried to pass him silently.

Just as he got to the door next to William, William lifted the sword and placed it where the man's neck should have been. It fit right in. The sword rested on the young man's Adam's apple. William looked where the man's eyes should have been and spoke. "What are you doing?" he asked.

The man froze for a moment. William's sharp eyes met directly with his frightened eyes. He then frowned. He took a step back and read a spell. William did nothing on purpose. He wanted to see what this idiot would do.

Light magic began to form in the man's hand, just as he had encountered it before. 'Perhaps this magic is the standard for this family,' he thought. But this time the spell was so weak that William took a step and came in front of the man. He took his light-gathering, enchanted hand and forcibly closed it. The invisibility spell was broken when William made contact with the man's body.

The young man looked down at William with an extremely confused and frightened expression. William was at least a head taller than he was. Then, when the spell was over, William let go of his hand and slapped him. The man was so weak that with a slap he flew several meters and crashed into the wall of the tower. He passed out instantly!

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

William looked at his slapped hand. “Did I hit that hard?” said. Then he looked at the man again and walked over to his unconscious body. He pulled the dimensional bag from his waist and took it.

When he looked inside, he was met with a small surprise. He had more soul stones compared to the one he got from the other mage. It seemed strange to him that this weaker man had more soul stones. He quickly transferred the contents into his own dimensional bag. The man's dimensional bag was ten cubic meters, extremely small. Hang it around his waist, maybe give it to someone later.

He then looked at the man's unconscious face and tried to wake him with a light slap. It took five slaps for the man to wake up again. As soon as he woke up, he immediately shielded his hands in front of him.

“Please don't kill me!” said. Even though he couldn't pee, the snot running from his nose with tears showed how scared he was.

"Why is that?" William asked, looking calmly into his eyes.

“Well? Why is that? Because I have a lot of money! I can give you as much as you want!” said.

“What money? I think you are extremely poor!” said. William pointed to it.

The man then thought he might as well act as he thought he could negotiate with William and reached for his dimensional bag. But he couldn't find anything there. “I—I—My money was here!”

“Looking for this?” William asked, pointing to the now-empty dimensional bag.

"Oh yes! Oh—” The man could not speak out loud, but it was said from within. 'Damn it!'

He remained in his seat with an embarrassed face. He couldn't speak.

“ So —you don't have any money, why shouldn't I kill you now?” William asked again.

“ Hmm —Well—.” The man tried to think. But now that he had no money, there was nothing to brag about.

Then a big idea came to his mind. He raised a finger and spoke as if he had come up with a brilliant idea.

"Secret! I have a secret! I'll tell you if you promise not to kill me!” said.

“ Hmm? What secret was it?" William asked thoughtfully.

“But you will promise not to kill me!” said. The young man thought his secret would work.

“It depends on how valuable your secret is. If it's too valuable, I promise I won't kill you." Then he made a fist and hit his chest through his leather armor. "Warrior word!" said. His expression was very serious, but he was smiling inside.

The young man frowned, thinking for a moment that he shouldn't trust William. But the fear of dying prevailed, and he spoke.

“Well--Okay then. The king's brother teleported away!” said.

William's eyes immediately widened. “He is teleported? Do not tell me!" said. He grabbed both sides of the man with his hands.

The young man immediately began to speak more. "Yup! Yeah! Exactly! He escaped, but the teleport sequence was a one-shot, and it is unknown where it landed.” Said. He had a disappointed expression on his face. He also wanted to escape with him, but the teleport array could only send one person at a time and it was too expensive to use.

William's grip did not loosen but instead began to choke more violently. He frowned and spoke, suppressing every word. “What do you mean it was a one-time thing?!!!”

The young man was so choked that he could no longer speak. He slapped William's strong arms with his hands.

"I can't spea--." His voice was too low to be heard.

Later, William realized that he was dying and forced himself to stop. He removed both hands from his collar and pretended to straighten his wrinkled shirt. "What did you say?" said.

“Cough—Cough—Damn!” The man corrected himself and took a more comfortable sitting position. “Yes, there is one supreme soul stone on the entire island and enough space stone to activate the array once. So yes, it's a one-time trip.” Said. He still had a disappointed expression on his face.

William frowned again. He approached the wall of the tower and gave a kick.

“ Booom!” "Damn it!" said. There was only one opportunity on the whole island, and the king's brother, seeing the difficulty, chose that opportunity to save himself. Then he turned and went to the young man sitting by the wall. He took his sword. He looked at his swollen face angrily.

"You're not going to kill me, are you?" the young man asked with great fear.

William was torn between killing him and not killing him, but then he made a decision.

“Your secret was really big.” A smile appeared on the young man's face. “However, your secret is useless now that that teleport array is used up.” Said. He slid his sword through his neck with perfect speed. Even a few inches of the wall behind the young man had cut through as if it were mud.

This time he was really angry. Tired of these selfish sons of bitches. The young man in front of him was not innocent at all. Even the slaves at the entrance were reason enough to kill him.

"Ah! Damn it!" William threw another kick at the tower wall as he walked out the door.

“ Boom!” He then turned his head towards the other towers. “Sons of bitches, I will kill you all before sunrise!” he said and started running at full speed in the dark.

The battlefield was in lights. Arthur was drenched with sweat. He was kneeling in the middle of thousands of corpses, allowing one of the apprentice magicians to pour a potion into his mouth. It was surrounded by earthen spikes of various sizes. The fires left by the fire spells, the little green pools caused by the poisonous potions, and the little swamps mixed with blood caused by the water spells. The traces of the war that two second-level mages had waged among so many people were still not erased. It was a very sad situation.

The air was too heavy to breathe. Arthur was able to stand up hardly. Frowning, he nervously looked at the man a hundred meters across, leaning against the collapsed wall of a house, with an earthen spear hidden in the middle of his chest. His body was still glowing with golden light. Although he was dying, he had not lost any of his grace.

Arthur slowly approached him. When he was right in front of him, he gave a weak kick to the man's head.

“ Puahh!!” The seriously injured man, who had slumped against the wall, was kicked awake and vomited a mouthful of blood. He lost several of his teeth with this kick.

“You even killed your own soldiers! Do you have any last words?!” Arthur shouted out in anger.

The man at the foot of the wall began to laugh hysterically. His golden blond hair, stuck with blood to his forehead, shone again with his smile.

“ Heheh —Cough, Cough!” He couldn't help laughing and coughed. “What can I say, I lost it.” Said.

Arthur said, “Well, at least it's good that you know you lost!” said. He then took out a short dagger from his dimensional bag. It was a foot long. It didn't look deadly at all. There were three symbols on the body of the dagger, indicating that it had three strengthen. The hilt was inlaid with precious stones.

Arthur grabbed the man's bloody gold hair. He held the dagger to his throat.

The man, on the other hand, was still laughing hysterically, not caring that his head would soon be cut off. Then he moved his lips and said the last words that would leave Arthur in bed for years to think. “ Heheh! We lost, but you don't win either. Just wait, my brother will come to take our revenge. He will make this island one of the countless places that only serve him! When that time comes! —Cough Cough !” He started coughing before he could finish his sentence. Arthur didn't want to hear the rest of the man's words, but he was talking about something that piqued his interest.

“When that time comes, you will all be his slaves! Academy, wizard tower! All of you!" said. He shouted his last words. Arthur couldn't take it anymore.

Putting all his strength into the hand that held the dagger, he slaughtered it like a sacrificial sheep. He then took his severed head in his hands and lifted it into the air towards the battlefield. "We won!" yell.

Everyone who was fighting at the time had heard Arthur's voice. This had created more momentum than Thedo had before when Cassdo lifted his head.

Everyone raised their fists with exhausted and somewhat happy faces. "Victory! Victory! Victory!"

Sitting next to a headless corpse five hundred meters away, Thedo shouted out exhaustedly to Theo, who was kneeling by his sword twenty meters away. “Find a horse, tell the whole army! Let them enter the capital! It's time to clean up." Said.

Theo already looked like he had rested enough, half of his face was covered with burns, but as a bronze rank warrior who had been through hellish training, these would only fall into the category of minor injuries.

"Alright." He then drew his sword from the ground. He walked to a horse tens of meters away, and when he turned again on the same road, he passed Thedo. At that moment Thedo gave the order again. “Remember, no looting or pillage!”

"As you wish," Theo replied calmly. This war had been extremely heavy for everyone. They knew that from now on it would be much simpler. They had killed almost all powerful enemies here within an hour. All the enemies whose names were known… were dead. The ancient magicians of the kingdom, the loyal guards of the palace, the noble citizens of the city, had all died here, under a door.

Theo calculated that they had lost too many men in this war. After all these years, almost half of these people had just died in the war.

The war was a sad event for those on this island.
