Unexpected acquaintance

Meanwhile, Fablo and the others had almost left the estate at this time. They were currently at the place where Lucas had died, zombie corpses littered all over the place and the remnants of destruction caused by the storm yesterday made the sight of them even worse.

The group moved in silence through the streets, although the place had been cleared, yesterday's event had taught them that there was nothing wrong in being overly cautious. This was especially true for Priscal's and Lia's group, yesterday's incident had caused a new seed of fear for the zombies to sprout in their hearts.

Fablo moved closer to Edward as they continued walking.

"Hey, you smelled that yesterday, right?" Fablo whispered to Edward. He made sure his voice was very low so that even if someone was standing next to Edward, they would not hear him.

"Mmm," Edward gave Fablo a short Stare before nodding in response. Since he was already aware that Fablo was just like him, it did not take him long to realize what the man was talking about.

Yesterday when they had gone to the bathroom to wash up and change into better clothes, a sweet aroma that was akin to candy had suddenly spread into the bathroom from the main hall. Edward and Fablo had exchanged a glance at that time as they both knew what that sweet aroma truly was, it was human blood.

Edward had discovered long ago after his transformation that a lot of things no longer made sense to him and one of those was his sense of smell which had almost given him a shock, Fablo was most likely the same.

Zombie eyes and human blood smelled so nice and alluring to them that they would feel a sudden desire to taste it, which was just unbelievable and unacceptable!

How could they bring themselves to eat other people or chew on the disgusting eyes of the zombies? What different would they be from these mindless flesh-eating monsters?

They had concluded the moment they smelled the sweet scent yesterday that it was human blood because if a zombie really wandered over, they would still be the first to pick up their disgusting smell.

But White Fang and the others acted like nothing had happened when they came out, Fablo did not bother asking as it would be weird no matter how he would try to explain why he asked such a question.

Seeing as Edward did not say anything, Fablo turned quiet as well and they all resumed moving without uttering a word.

They arrived at the area where their shelter was located, the place still looked the same and they did not encounter any zombies as they moved closer to the building with the metal door.

Bang! Bang!

Fablo hit the metal door with his hand twice before taking a step back, silence followed for a while as they all waited under the mercy of the scorching sun.

The small opening on the metal door was pushed open and a pair of cautious eyes peeked through it, those eyes immediately lit up when they saw Fablo and the others outside.

"It's them! Fablo and the others are back!" Edward heard an excited voice from behind the metal door as a few clinging sounds followed and the metal door suddenly swung open. Standing at the entrance was the scrawny old man and the fat lady who had welcomed them the first time Edward came here as well.

'It had barely been a minute since Fablo knocked on the metal door. How did the fat woman get here so fast?' Edward wondered inwardly as he followed the others inside.

Just like the previous time, Fablo, Edward, and the few men in the group followed the skinny old man to the men's bathroom while Lia, Priscal, and the others followed the fat woman to the women's bathroom for a checkup.

They all went to the top floor of the building after they had finished with the inspection.

Fablo did not delay the matter after they finally returned, not even giving the others a chance to catch a breath because of the urgency of the task at hand; the sooner they reclaimed the military base and armed themselves with better weapons, the safer they would be and the more people who were wandering on their own and barely managing to survive they would be able to save.

Fablo called an emergency meeting that included everyone, not even the elderly who were part of the shelter were excluded. After all, since they did not go out to fight, their opinions were still needed since their next cause of action would affect their future as well.

When everyone gathered, Fablo first told the people who had been left there ( the skinny old man, the fat lady, and the other old women) what had happened when they went out, Priscal as well as Lia also narrated their experience to them.

The old man and the others were shocked by what had transpired when Fablo and the others went out, giving words of gratitude to their maker as it was a miracle that Fablo and the rest had survived the ordeal.

Fablo went ahead to talk about White Fang, how they had assisted the group, their shelter, and the plan that both sides had agreed on. Of course, he also told his people about the odd feeling he got when they were still in White Fang's shelter; he didn't know if he was the only one who felt that way and he could not say about the sweet scent of blood, so Fablo had to present the matter in a way that it sounded like it was a strong hunch feeling of his. Unsurprisingly, Lia, Priscal, and the others also said the same thing; they all suspected that there was something wrong with the people in White Fang's shelter.

"White Fang? White Fang, you say!? Did he…, did he…?" The skinny old man suddenly reacted when he heard about White Fang and his shelter, he immediately went on and described White Fang with the only difference being that the White Fang he described wasn't as fierce-looking as the one Fablo and the others had met but it was easy to tell that the Chang must have been due to the three years of the apocalypse.
