It was already morning yet the run was nowhere to be seen as thick dark clouds covered the skies while chilling wind ambushed everyone and everything in sight, it was obvious that it was going to rain today if not a downpour.
Most of the people shivered from the coldness of the wind despite the thick clothes that they were wearing, the weather on earth still did not change even after its inhabitants had experienced an unbelievable change to the point that not all of them were left after just three years. It would sometimes rain cats and dogs, at other times it would snow like crazy that the entire place would be covered in snow, and at times the sun would be so unbearable that people would want to go topless.
Despite all of these that would make it seem like Earth was trying to provide assistance to its dwellers by letting out extreme weather, the despicable zombies were still found everywhere and would refuse to disappear.
Currently, Edward, Fablo, Lia, and the others were making their way towards the direction of the military base. Of course, they would first stop in front as there was still quite a large area that was crawling with zombies and they could not sneak past even if they wanted to much less after Fablo wanted to clear them out.
The group was currently short of two members compared to when they had first come here and those two members were Lucas and the woman whom Lia had sliced her head off.
Edward could not help but throw a glance at Lia as a chill went down his spine when he remembered the scene of her cutting off the head of the pleading woman without a moment of hesitation. He sneakily moved a few more steps away from her.
Lia noticed this movement from the side of her eyes but she did not give any thought to it and continued to move forward with an expressionless face as if she was immune to the cold that was making others hug themselves with their arms.
Fourteen of them moved through the quiet road without making a sound and only the howling of the wind could be heard, they could see that the sky would tear open at any moment and there would soon be a downpour. They did not choose to retreat even though it was about to rain but instead increased their pace to get there quickly. The rain would be a good cover for them to carry out their plan since it would cover the sounds they would make and prevent the zombies from getting alerted, it was a perfect situation to ambush the zombies.
But that did not mean that they would want to fight under the rain, so they still had to move fast before the rain started.
They soon reached the place where they had fought the thirty or so number of zombies the other day. Corpses of zombies that had died in brutal ways littered the ground and on one side was the unrecognizable body of Lucas, they only knew that the corpse belonged to him because they were present the other day.
Seeing Lucas's corpse made the fourteen of them have solemn expressions on their faces and their hearts raced as different thoughts filled their minds, fear was slowly creeping in.
They had come with sixteen people that day but had still lost two members, what about now that their numbers were fewer? Some of the people could not help but turn to stare at Edward at this point. Even though not all of them knew the truth, they could still tell that Luca's death was somehow related to Edward. What if they encountered the same number of zombies as they did that day? Wouldn't that mean that more of them were just going to die as well?
They could only grip their weapons and hope that today would not be their last.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
Yes, hope. They could only hope at this point.
"Everyone wait here, I'll go over and take a look," Fablo said to them before going further down the street with his nail-riddled bat.
No one had any objections and they all found a place to take cover from the small drops of rain that were slowly falling.
"Hey, you alright?" Priscal asked as she moved closer to Edward.
Edward looked at her in confusion, he was not sick and he was sure that he was not looking sickly as well. Then what's with her question?
Of course, Priscal was not talking about that.
"I mean, you won't…you know, freeze today as well," she said with a short hesitation in her words.
The others also looked over when they heard her question and they all stared at Edward, waiting for his answer. Lia also glanced at him but only briefly as she snorted coldly before looking away the next second.
Edward's mouth hung open as he tried to say something but no words came out of his mouth for a few seconds. His mind was on overdrive to give an answer to Priscal's question but he could not find any. He could simply have given a positive response but that would be him blatantly lying through his nose and he did not want them to have that mindset else they expected too much from him.
Fine, he was now able to face zombies without freezing but he had to inflict harm to himself to achieve that for a reason that even he did not know but what he did not know was if this method would work if he was facing more than one zombie. Would it still keep his body under his control if he was up against three or more zombies? Edward was not certain thus his reason for not answering Priscal.
"I…don't know" he managed to muffle in response after a few seconds of thinking.
Priscal sighed with a look of resignation on her face while the others showed disappointed expressions towards Edward's answer.
Edward could only keep his head low while he hoped for Fablo to return quickly.
…..
Meanwhile, Fablo arrived at the collapsed building they had used as a cover when they first came here. He climbed and peeked over to see if any zombies had replaced the ones that they wiped out before.
"As expected," Fablo said to himself as his eyes landed on the ten to thirteen zombies standing motionless down the street behind the collapsed building.
"Thankfully, their numbers are not even half the previous horde," Fablo said to himself and circled the building to approach them with his bat ready for action.
He got within a few meters of the zombies when one of the zombies suddenly turned to look at him, Fablo did not pay attention at first and thought that it was only reacting to the sound of his footsteps but his eyes suddenly widened and his steps halted when he saw the colors of this zombie's eyes. They had a tinge of green mixed with the usual red color.
"An abnormal zombie?" Fablo gasped in surprise but he did not have enough time to be surprised as the zombie suddenly roared and dashed towards him. The other zombies also reacted as they mindlessly followed the first zombie even though they had not spotted any prey.
"Damnit!"
Fablo cursed as he instantly turned around and took off while the zombies chased after him. The abnormal zombie was unsurprisingly faster than the other zombies and was almost catching up to Fablo even though Fablo was currently running at his full speed, the zombie was faster than him and he was only ahead because of the initial distance between them. Fablo was honestly shocked by the zombie's speed, he had wanted to slow down a bit so that he could lure these zombies over to where his group was since he knew his speed was far ahead of those of ordinary people but this zombie did not give him the chance, he did not dare to joke or fake speed with this zombie behind him and even when he was already running at his top speed, the damned zombie was still closing in the gap between them!!
The rest of the zombies were not far behind and now had their red eyes fixed on Fablo's figure.
"Everyone get ready, it's an abnormal zombie!" Fablo shouted when he was close enough to where he had left the others, he could already see the bodies of the other zombies that they had killed just a distance ahead of him.
Crack!! Crrrrrrrkkk!!
Right at the same moment, a bright flash of lightning streaked across the sky as a loud thunderclap sounded in everyone's ears.
Drop drop drop drop!!
It started to pour immediately after the thunderclap.
Fablo also chose this moment to turn around and face the abnormal zombie that was madly chasing behind him, the zombie had almost caught up to him and had just leaped into the air when Fablo turned around and waved his bat at it.
Lia and the rest were also racing towards him while the remaining zombies rushed in from the other side.
