Nathan took a deep breath, while setting his sight on the humongous roulette wheel. Which is barely visible through the mist with undisguised greed and expectations.
Who doesn't get excited by such a thing, though Nathan never gambled or even played this kind of thing to pass time but he certainly knew a few hardcore gamblers in his past life, he somehow liked the irony of it. Novelty of the situation slowly got him.
« Alright! System now spin the roulette wheel for me? » Nathan commanded.
He even daringly used a rainbow ribbon on the luck attribute earlier, well partly because of this roulette chance. Luckily for him, his luck got permanently boosted.
Nathan knew how cruel a person's fate could be, Harry's life was the best example for it. If it was still his previous life simply would have dismissed this, claiming it's just meddling of the Author, rather than fate.
Since Nathan was reincarnated and going to live into this kind of surreptitious world and society it's all the better to take some unusual and extreme measures against a mysterious foe.
To counter something as fickle as fate one had to be armed with equally mysterious and fickle things in your favor. What is more suitable for this kind of reckless plan than luck.
He wasn't casually wasting precious things like rainbow ribbons, easily knowing how precious each of them was. He would have regretted if he casually used such miraculous things God forbid him, he vowed to have no regrets in this life.
He firmly believed every little bit of luck could make his life all the better here. Even if Thomas was a renowned potion master in Britain, Nathan couldn't possibly ask him one day to stockpile Felix Felicis in bulk could he?
Not to mention it's highly toxic and takes months to brew and he wasn't stupid enough to rely on external things in this dangerous world. Better to use such God given opportunity like this to raise his own luck and give him better results, possibly a halo of luck.
He subconsciously summoned the panel and glanced at his newly appeared feature which was weirdly named 'Unparallel Luck' he couldn't help but frown when he saw the unrecognizable symbols kept ceaselessly.
[@$@*#$@#*$$]( Ahem!...just pretend the characters are unrecognizable alien symbols will you?)
' The system really seems slow, it looks like it would take some time,' Nathan wondered, simply attributing it to how the system lay dormant for nearly four hours, in a way to encourage himself.
The roulette thrummed suddenly the mists surrounding it dissipated in mere few seconds, Nathan swam close to the wheel with an ever so eager expression.
The wheel was like a masterpiece carved in black obsidian boulder, which was solely supported by a thick and pretty Piller. Which looks more like white obelisk from ancient civilizations than anything else.
There were at least hundreds divisions rims of the wheel. Scattered with colors of white, green, gold, red and purple. Each of these divisions had names or some rare cases, pictures, or question marks drawn on it.
Nathan got a little curious here. As he reads Nathan raises his eyebrows at a few items on the feel which read "Soap" and weirdly enough " Cleopatra's shoes' '. Some of the names almost made him faint in shock.
Luffy D. monkey, King, Obadiah Stane, Matt Murdock, Mark Grayson, Nezu, Saitama, Clark Kent, Zeus, Athena, Broly, Yoda, Levi Ackerman and katsura.etc. His pupil froze at the wheel, some of these characters he knew about them or heard but most of them he doesn't have any clues.
As long as he touched the name he had a brief introduction, after a few minutes he resignedly sighed as he uncomfortably backed away. All he could tell was that there was no pattern or anything he could find or what basis they were arranged here he doesn't have clues.
At the moment he felt too overwhelmed to think about this kind of unusual thing, time was literally flying. He couldn't afford to waste anymore of it. He has another two rainbow ribbons to take care of.
Some were overpowered Franklin Richards, and SuperMan, some were unfathomable like Dr paradox and Whis, there were some names with useless powers or powers that can affect the user's mental and character or even outright kill him.
He was quite enthusiastic to spin it, at first now he became more and more apprehensive about this gamble. But he was kind of glad he had some luck on his side otherwise he wouldn't dare to risk his life.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Afraid he wouldn't dare to really spin it if he kept thinking about it and delaying this anymore. He shouted at the system «Hey, system are you daydreaming or what? Can't you...just spin it already?»
[The system already prepared the roulette wheel for Host's opportunity, please begin at your will]
'What the hell it's.... Huh! ' he looked at his transparent hand which was somehow holding a huge hook like thing. With one glass he could tell it should have been at least twenty something kilo at bare minimum.
But here he was simply unaware even holding it. He checked out this hook-like thing in his hand with curiosity. This thing really popped out of nowhere, God knows how long he had it with him. The thing glowed in subtle glow and he dropped it reflexively.
Unlike what he subconsciously expects, the thing Floated there unsupported. He gulped as he remembered the information, slightly abashed by his own surprise he gently nudged it forward.
The thing shot out like a cannonball, but there were no booming sounds or anything from the collision. It disappeared into the wheel and suddenly an extra needle-like thing appeared on its own.
With a *Swish* The wheel started to spin automatically, and started to pick up speed like an old electric fan. After about seven minutes the wheel gradually slowed down and could come to a stop any possible minute.
Nathan felt like his heart was on his throat, he approximately knew which part of the wheel needle was going to point. He has been constantly assessing this for the last couple of minutes. His face was very tense and pale.
Nathan clenched his hand in nervousness and frustration. ' Damn, who the h*ll are they?' he didn't recognize most of the names, some of the few names he knew were rather useless.
His breath getting ragged, his clenched fists and forehead was clammy (It's just an expression. Just pretend he wasn't in his astral form even Nathan forgeted he was in a special state) Nathan felt his chest get tight and light headed as the wheel's momentum waned off.
He concluded the needle will stop at Purple Man, Bashir, Charles Xavier or Danielle Moonstar. He only knew one of these names which he thought okay. He didn't want to get some worst power so he prayed silently to someone he thought he knew.
The wheel lost its momentum completely when it passed this 'Bashir' person and stopped at Charles Xavier only then he relaxed taut nerves. He kind of felt exhausted and wondered how gamblers felt while they were gambling in casinos or clubs.
' Well it's kind of exciting though ' he giggled in his mind while secretly wondering whether his mind got muddled in trauma.
[ Ding.... Congratulations Host, you have obtained the character card called Charles Xavier ]
[Would you like to extract character card Charles Xavier at the moment for use?]
' Huh! What's going on... I thought the information indicate that I will get this person's power what does this 'Character card' the system talking about'
He frowned heavily upon realizing something wasn't right with this.«Hey system? Care to elaborate what this Character Card thingy? Or why was there a 'card' will you?»
' What the hell? Am I playing poker or something?'
[ Ding... Explaining to the Host. Considering Host current situation and laws of this world, system commissioned this function for well being of its Host-]
«Speak in plain English. I want a clear explanation, not your technical blabberings » he interrupted, as he couldn't understand why there was a need for all this useless talk.
[ It's in system protocol to prevent anything from endangered host life. System has the right to interfere in anything, if it's considered a threat to Host's life and well-being.]
[ The system detected it's host won a supernatural power from unknown source, so System decided to verify it's threat to host thus it come to it]
«So you are saying this has nothing to do with mysterious force interference rather your meddling? Am I correct?» Nathan asked, realization dawned on his face.
[....]
« If I don't use the card, will it disappear or expire? Anything else I had to know you better explained to me or I will... Never forgive you?» he added this question after further thought.
[Affirmative, it wouldn't disappear anytime soon]
«Good...Then hold it for me will you?» he offhandedly requested it looking much more relieved. He didn't believe the world's will would bother with this kind of simple things.
Perhaps he was planning to do something even more daring and dangerous. So he didn't think deeply about his decision and he wasn't ready to extract this mutant power from Professor Baldy.
« System, cut off... Ahem remove the Mission Functions for me.... Here, take another rainbow ticket from me. This is how I want to use the second rainbow ticket so you don't have to ask for confirmation, » he said with a somewhat shaky voice.
[....]
The system seemed speechless by his audacity, it didn't respond to him immediately after calling it a few more times he got anxious.
This was his little plan with the system, he never let anyone control his life as he said earlier. He even dared to have designs against fate. Why should he let the system dictate his life?
Indeed he was having trust issues from his last life. It's not that he really thinks the system would enslave him or something but he had to be careful of everything nonetheless.
«Hey system...are you there?» he couldn't help but wonder whether the strange space affects the system in some way... It seems it's interrupt their connection he-
[Ding...]
« About the thing I asked...Ahem, use this rainbow ticket to remove the mission feature from your functions. I don't want that»
[Apologizing to Host, System doesn't have that kind of authority nor did the Host]
Stunned by this reply Nathan sarcastically commented « So you really have some hearing problems don't you?» he gestured his hand as the rainbow ribbon floated towards him.
Nathan waved the ribbon in front of his face while secretly marveling at the ethereal feeling he said « Did you forget what you said to me some time ago? I'm using these miraculous things to customize your functions. I don't need any freaking authority to do this. » he chuckled smugly, was this thing trying to trick him or something it's not easy.
[It's Host, who forgot what the system said previously, more like a deliberate misunderstanding on your part to be precise. System did says things shouldn't over the top]
[What host asking, is literally bloating the system please do customize another feature. Removing features wasn't plausible]
Nathan fell silent « I see! Then please lock this feature permanently for me, I don't want this in my life » he stubbornly insists on another way.
[Ding...It's advised that the Host had to think it through thoroughly, system functions pretty much based on missions. If Host insisting on doing this then be prepared shop function will be permanently disabled as well]
[This will lead to more dangerous possibilities, likely system collapse, or other undesirable effects on the host. Which will likely cost host's life]
*Gulp*
Nathan's transparent face had a look of horror but he struggled to go with his plan, his heart started wavering from this decision.
«Was there no chance for this?» he softly asked, all his confidence and arrogance gone. He was almost bent under the possible consequences.
[ Currently none, neither host nor system has power and authority to do anything about this predicament]
*Phew!* « Assuming there was a success rate to this ... How much is that?» his mind felt numb even though he wasn't sure why he was clinging to it.
[Ding... Calculating Probability of success... 3% success rate]
Nathan's mouth twitched slightly, ' Even hard core gambler wouldn't dare take a bet in this kind of situation' he self deprecatingly thought.
' Should I really have to let it go just like this?' he melancholically thought to himself.
