CHAPTER 79: Member of The Church

CHAPTER 79: Member of The Church

Levi walked through the empty hall, one of the academy's buildings to his right. Once he finished digesting that massive amount of info and mystery, he headed out of the restroom to Fiona's office, which was closed.

'She is taking an unnecessary burden for me. I need to have a proper conversation about this again.'

As Levi headed to his room, he could see the same academy staff that had just called him outside his dorm. When Levi was near, the woman handed him a letter, her ears turning red, and walked away. Levi looked at the light blue envelope in his hand.

The envelope was sealed by a small paper badge of the church. He opened it and, as he entered his room, took out the letter and started reading it,

"Well, as we had promised, the time has come for you to fulfil your part of the promise."

Levi kept reading, written by The Saint, Siras, as he started heating his food again.

"Tomorrow, go to the city's church; I have informed 'Quill' about you. Meet him, and he will let you go through the process of being part of a church ask him for the book I sent him. Don't ask him about the mission; he isn't and shouldn't be informed."

"Be safe, and if anything is out of your capability... run. No need to be a hero."

Levi finished reading the letter from his partner, more like a leader now.

Levi sat down and poured down his bowl of soup and salad, starting to feast on the tasteless meal. Not quite. He had brought that heaven of wine after all.

'I should limit myself to 1 glass per dinner.'

He thought as he recalled the conversation he had in the restroom. The previous Levi wasn't quite a normal, ordinary bullied commoner like he had thought. There was something deeper that Levi now had to figure out, not for saving the world but for his own sake.

"A life for life,"

Levi said as the red screen popped up right in front of him. The central eye gently flapped its small bat wings. [Master that-]

"I won't leave you, nor do I have any plans to do so."

Levi consoled his cute friend, but not petting its head.

He started reading the writings on the red screen where 80% of them were just weird writings, but he felt familiar with them. He had seen it and used it without knowing about it,

"My Mirror Magic, some of the writing it has is similar to the one on screen."

He created a magic circle in his hand and found only some of those engravings matched. Even knowing this much would help a lot. The red panel then had five characters written in big letters,

Seven years and eight months. It was a clear warning to make him know; Don't overuse it.

He kept reading at the bottom and saw two clear instructions on it.

[

1. The user can utilize their lifespan to increase the overall ability of the arrow they fire. At first, the user needs to coat the arrow with their mana and then say "A life for life." Then the user can sacrifice their life for the amount of power they need. For example, a year of lifespan can destroy the weakest of S-rank at your level.

]

This was huge for Levi. Now he could explore places he didn't dare to, only if he used it well. [Essence] could help him kill an S-rank, but it needed some time to activate. This wouldn't do well in a tight situation.

[

2. Two hours of sleep will be converted to a day of lifespan. However, the user mustn't be interrupted in the sleep. If the user wakes up even a second before the two-hour mark, then the lifespan will not be increased.

]

Levi then refreshed up and went straight to bed.

"Need to get that lifespan."

Levi got 7 hours of sleep adding three days to his life span.

Now he was headed to the church. Even though the festival had ended, the academy was closed to give students time to arrive without any hurry.

Before heading out, he went to Fiona's office, which was closed, and had no idea where to look for her.

'How did the headmaster even slip? His old brain probably has started rotting. Hope he doesn't do more than this?'

Little did Levi know, it had already been done. As he walked through the streets of Hilica, he noticed people taking down the decorations and paintings. The street was busy as usual, though less compared to other cities Levi had visited. As he walked to the church, he had decided to visit Tyson and Irina, but their shop had closed as well.

'Are they still not back?'

When Levi was at Uralitha, the lesser eye would constantly feed him information on Tyson and the family. For the festival, they had gone out to a different place to celebrate; after all, the business was doing well for him.

It did feel like too much stalking, so Levi didn't spy on them more and ordered the lesser eye to inform him only if something bad happened.

Once Levi reached the church, he could see a two-storey, marbled and chiselled building in front of him. It spanned half a football pitch surrounded by gardens and other small buildings associated with the church.

Unlike the church on Earth that had a cross sign as its logo, the church here was different.

'The logo was composed of a deity, his face covered in cloth, angel's wings larger than its body, and his hand on a sword piercing the ground.'

Levi had met that god not long ago. He didn't have a good impression of the god but dared not to say it near any of his worshippers. There were no gates, so Levi walked to the main building. Two guards in white clothing with chainmail armour stood there.

"You are in the wrong area. The door for the praying ceremony is on the other side."

One of the guards spoke, pointing in the direction Levi needed to go.

"I am not there for that," Levi said.

He could show the letter to these guards, but it would just cause a commotion. The pope personally writing letters to a commoner would shake society.

He took the ID he got from the hospital and showed it to them. The guard took the card and looked closely at it.

The name "Levi" was well known among the healers and knights of the church because of what he had accomplished with their senior, Ryan Floris. Though most thought of "Levi" as an urban legend because being able to imitate what Ryan does was supposed to be impossible. Not just that; his work ethic and calmness during those hectic hospital hours had amounted to quite fame for him.

Both guards again looked at Levi, and their mouths slightly opened. They were starstruck.

"Please, wait a minute."

One of the guards said as he opened the door slightly and squeezed himself in.

Levi waited for a while, ignoring the admiring glances the other knight threw at him. Soon, the door knight came out and gave Levi his ID back. "You can go in."

As he walked in, he could see a large statue of the God with a similar stature to the one in the logo. The statue was as tall as the building. Levi could see a man in a white cloak with a golden border, bowing to the statue.

Levi stood beside him and watched him clasp his hands and whisper his prayers. Watching Quill pray seemed similar to what he did when using [Essence]. He put the belief in himself and Quill in his God.

"You are patient that I thought,"

Quill spoke as he took off his hood and looked at Levi who had been waiting for twenty minutes for Quill's prayer to end.

"I just didn't want to seem rude on our first time meeting."

First impressions mattered a lot. Though Quill had heard many things about him from Ryan. He wouldn't stop yapping about him.

"He isn't the most talented one I have met, even when he imitated my technique. I don't know how to describe him, not the strongest but he is not someone weak. I wouldn't say he is the kindest nor the most evil. Never have I seen him work to death or slack off. But something about him feels similar. When I pray to our god, the world around me feels wonderful and peaceful. An unbounded strength enters me. That is exactly what Levi is, an observer and the will to pursue the good."

Now that Quill had seen him, he didn't even need to observe him to know if the words Ryan said were true. Quill walked into another room and brought out a sword with him. He didn't waste time and quickly wanted Levi to be part of the church.

Unsheathing the sword, he pointed the tip right at Levi's chest where the heart was located. Levi didn't feel any of his alarms go off. The man with such a mighty sword in front of him didn't feel dangerous. It felt like having a handshake... more of a holy handshake.

Soon, a soothing energy entered his body with some prickling pain within him. Time went ticking as Levi's whole body was now basked in a golden light that wore off in a second.

Quill opened his eyes and put the sword back in its scabbard.

"Focus your mana on any part of your body and imagine a gold light coming out of it."

Levi closed his eyes, imagining a flow of light in his mana veins and moved the mana from the core to his wrist. He opened his eyes and saw a bright sword imprinted on his wrist. It was a mark of being part of the church.

Quill then gave him a letter identical to the one he received last night. He didn't open it and kept it in his pocket.

"Place that letter on your wrist while activating the church seal; only then will the characters on the letter appear,"

Quill instructed, but Levi didn't open it in front of him.

"The pope and Ryan both have trust in you and now so do I. Don't reveal your mission to anyone, not me or Ryan. When you finish the job, come and meet me. You still need to go through some other formalities before being part of the church. For now, take this."

Quill then handed him a small dagger with black leather and the hilt of the dagger covered in pure iron.

"You could need this,"

Quill said as he again began praying.

Levi turned around and stood right in front of the door. He took out the letter and opened it. He needed to know about this mission fast, and right now he found the church to be the safest place to do so.

Taking out the folded blank piece of paper, he placed it on his palm. He noticed letters starting to form on the letter.

'Don't let it be anything hard.'

Levi unfolded the paper and sighed just by reading the first line.
