The Psychopath's Journey
CHAPTER 38: A Gamble

CHAPTER 38: A Gamble

Three seemingly endless days flew by, but for Levi, they crawled at a snail's pace. Each morning, he was up at the crack of dawn, starting his daily routine at 6. Training was his first task, followed by a balanced meal, and then he would diligently weave silk for the cloth business. The usual classes and the unusual Blake always challenging him to fight.

After his morning training session, Levi would head to the academy's management office, taking care of various administrative responsibilities. His dedication extended even further as he continued to work in the hospital, tending to the needs of the afflicted.

Levi's return to the dormitory was always past the curfew. His late arrivals were only made possible because Ryan, recognizing the gravity of the situation, had secured special permission for Levi to work such long hours. The revelation that Levi had become Ryan's disciple sent shockwaves through the academy. An esteemed healer taking on an archer as an apprentice was an unusual choice, especially when the student in question was a commoner.

Rumors began to circulate about Levi's work in the hospital, but these whispers were eclipsed by the mounting jealousy and envy he faced. Levi's peers struggled to comprehend the significance of his actions. Envy, a blinding force, prevented them from understanding the tremendous effort Levi had invested in his achievements.

"Who would have thought that freak would be this capable?"

"Yeah! He is talented for a lowly blood."

"He must have begged Professor Ryan to make him his disciple."

Irene who heard these rumours could only control the burning in her heart. Nobody truly knew Levi, nor did she. But, she did knew, he wasn't someone who begged others for something. She also didn't like the fact he was called the "freak."

In the past, she didn't care and now she cared but didn't have the chance to show it. Levi didn't allow it.

'I hate these kind of people. They label someone just because of one thing about them, without trying to find out who they truly are….but I was one of those people as well.'

"Loser" that what she called Levi after she threw a book at him. She also labelled him later to realise he never was what she thought of him.

Irene remembered those mesmerzing eyes of his. A color of blood and the striking hue of moon, that what his eyes had, except that, nothing. Not a single sense of fear, happiness and sorrow. But, Irene didn't hate it.

'I felt at peace looking at his eyes. A eye that didn't judge me.'

She did try not thinking about him but his actions were always on her mind, bothering her.

'Why can't I get him out of my head?'

"Achooo..."

"Are you sure you are fine?"

Ryan inquired, concern evident in his voice. Levi had sneezed three times in the span of two minutes.

'Someone is cursing me to death.'

Levi took a bite of his sandwich, although the taste remained a mystery to him, feeling only rough and slimy textures.

Ryan remained unaware of the strange purple substance, but he knew its potential danger. A pandemic could emerge if this substance affected a large number of people in the city or the kingdom.

"Are you feeling alright….you know with all the work you're doing?" Ryan continued, his concern deepening. Levi responded calmly, "I have been sleeping well, and the pay is too substantial for me to neglect my work."

As Levi spoke, his expression suddenly shifted from calm to worry. Ryan noticed the change and asked, "What happened?"

"I need to go,"

Levi replied urgently, hastily leaving the hospital. This abrupt departure surprised Ryan, as he had never seen Levi so flustered and hasty.

"It's raining. Take an umbrella at least,"

Ryan suggested, but Levi had already vanished into the downpour.

The sound of wind rattling the door and rain drumming on the tin roof filled Tyson's house, signaling an ominous event

"We must get her to the hospital," Tyson insisted, even though they knew that seeking medical help for her was a complex matter. Luna's illness had become far more severe than anticipated.

Irina desperately tried to channel her mana into Luna's body, even though she lacked healing abilities.

Luna had always been frail, her upbringing in less than ideal circumstances contributing to her vulnerability. As the daughter of an S-rank individual, she had constantly battled illness, but this time, her genetics couldn't provide any defense.

Desperation loomed as Luna's condition worsened. Irina and Tyson were panicking, feeling helpless. Irina could only plead for divine intervention to save her daughter.

Then, suddenly, the door burst open. Levi appeared, approaching Luna's bedside.

"Levi?" Tyson and Irina exclaimed in surprise, wondering why he was there.

Irina too looked at Levi who was now beside them looking at Luna.

"Sorry bout the door, you didn't open the door when I knocked."

Irina and Tyson didn't say anything.

'Why is he here?'

Both of them thought.

Levi kneeled down and used his search skill.

'Her condition…is a lot worse than any other patients.'

It wasn't that there were tangled nerves or any bone deformity like other patient, her mana was not stable. It was brewing inside her to create something more ominous. Trying to destroy not her body but her soul and replace it.

"Her condition is."

He stopped speaking mid sentence.

Levi said as he moved his hand towards Luna forehead.

Irina wanted to stop him but right now, she wasn't in a position to stop him.

"When did the start?"

Levi asked as he chucked down a mana potion to replenish his mana from doing all those surgeries before hand.

"Just an hour ago."

Tyson said as he made another cold wrap.

"She was all good but suddenly she fell and since that this has happened."

"I need to treat her now," Levi said with determination. Irina moved out of his way, allowing him to work.

Levi was determined to do whatever it took to save Luna. He activated his [Essence] and golden string from his hand made way though Luna's nose. Luna's life hung in the balance, and the only option was to give it his all. Levi knew that every second counted, and with unwavering resolve, he delved deep into his knowledge and abilities to confront this dire situation.

As Levi's hands moved swiftly and skillfully, Tyson and Irina could only watch, their faces etched with anxiety. Levi's mind was racing as he assessed Luna's condition. The strain of his work in the hospital had prepared him for moments like these, moments when life hung in the balance.

"I'm going to need your help," Levi said to Irina, breaking the tense silence. He understood that he couldn't do this alone. Irina, despite her lack of formal medical training, had something invaluable to offer - her mana.

Without hesitation, Irina placed her hands on Levi's back and began channeling her mana. The energy flowed from her to him, replenishing his own energy reserves, and allowing him to continue his efforts. Levi could feel the surge of power, and it fueled his determination to save Luna.

Tyson watched the unfolding scene, feeling a mixture of hope and fear. He knew that this was their daughter's best chance at survival, but he couldn't help but worry about the consequences of Levi's actions.

Levi's concentration remained unbroken as he continued to work on Luna. He knew that he couldn't afford to let doubt or fear creep in. His singular focus was on saving a young life.

The minutes ticked by, and the atmosphere in the room grew increasingly tense. Luna's condition remained precarious, and the odds seemed stacked against her. Levi's efforts were relentless, his hands moving with precision and care.

As time passed, Levi's resources began to dwindle. The strain of his abilities was taking a toll, and he knew that he needed to make a pivotal decision. He had to do something drastic to turn the tide in Luna's favor.

Levi's eyes met Irina's, who was at the back barely holding her onto her tears. He could see the fear and desperation in her gaze. He knew that the next step would be risky, and he couldn't guarantee the outcome. But it was their only chance.

"I need to take a different approach," Levi said, his voice steady and resolute. Irina nodded, placing her trust in him.

Levi's hands moved with purpose as he redirected his energy, using it to create a channel for the illness within Luna. He needed to lure the disease away from her body and into his own. It was a dangerous gambit, and it carried grave risks. Levi understood that he was putting his own life on the line to save another.

The disease responded to Levi's efforts, moving towards him as if drawn by an invisible force. Levi's body became the battleground, a vessel for the illness to inhabit. It was a painful process but for a psycho like him it was nothing more than a walk in the park.

His body trembled as the disease took hold, seeking to overpower him. Levi could feel the insidious presence invading his very being. But he refused to yield. He was determined to save Luna.

The room was filled with tension as Levi's struggle continued. Irina and Tyson watched in silent anguish, their hope and fear intertwined. They had placed their trust in Levi, and now they could only wait and pray for a miracle.

Levi's vision blurred as he fought the disease within his own body, battling to save both Luna and himself. The minutes felt like hours, and the room seemed to close in on them.

Suddenly, a breakthrough occurred. Levi felt a surge of energy, a burst of strength that allowed him to push back against the disease. He could feel the tide turning, and Luna's condition began to stabilize.

The room was filled with a profound silence as Levi's efforts continued. Luna's breathing became more regular, and the color returned to her cheeks.

Levi's work was far from over, but the worst of the battle was behind him. He continued to channel the disease into himself, using his skills and the power of his [Essence] to weaken and neutralize it.

As time passed, Levi's body began to show signs of strain. Blue veins appeared on his skin, a visible testament to the struggle he was enduring. The disease was relentless, fighting to maintain its hold on him.

Levi's inner monologue resounded in his mind: "I can kill it." He repeated those words as a mantra, a reminder of his purpose and his determination to save Luna.

Levi knew that he couldn't do this alone. His unique abilities were a formidable weapon. He took one glance at the stabilising Luna and wondered.

'My actions tend to surprise myself. I really wonder what I would be feeling right now...if I could feel it.'

That was the last thing he thought as he lost all his strength and consciousness.

Irina grabbed his body before he could hit the ground.

The room was filled with a profound silence, broken only by the sound of the rain outside.

Tyson and Irina watched in awe as their daughter's color returned, and her breathing became steady. It was a moment of profound gratitude and relief.

Irina couldn't hold back her tears as she looked at her daughter, knowing that she had been given a second chance at life.

Tyson approached Levi, who was now unconscious, his body battered by the ordeal.

The room was filled with a mixture of emotions - relief, gratitude, and a deep sense of awe.

"Thank you."

Irina said as she held Levi's in her arms tightly, her hand trembling and her eyes crying tears like the rain flooding the streets.
