Chapter Three: Spells and Other Modern Magic

“Hey, Xena. I thought I would come in and meet your dad before we leave for church.” Becca said from the doorway. I was ready to leave but wasn’t expecting Becca to show up early.

“Okay, he’s in the library working but it should be fine to interrupt real quick.” Just as I said this I could hear dad coming down the stairs behind me.

“Oh. Are you girls leaving early?” Dad said from the bottom step. He always seemed to know just the right moment to show up.

One time, when I was little, I was playing at a friends house and fell out of a tree. I had just started to cry when he shows up out of no where and everything just seemed to get better. I was lucky I didn’t break anything and was able to walk away with just a few bruises. When I asked him how he knew to show up when he did he said it was a fathers intuition. It always feels like if I really need him, he’ll be there for me without me ever needing to call.

“Hey, dad. This is Rebecca, my friend from school. She wanted to meet you before we leave for church.”

“It’s nice to meet you Rebecca. I hope you’ll take good care of my daughter today.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll drop her back off after church, but, my parents tend to stay a bit longer to talk with everyone, so, we should be done by one.”

“Good to know. You can call me Sam, by the way. Or if you really want to remain formal, my last name is Kildare. I would prefer just Sam, though.”

“That’s an interesting last name. I didn’t know your last name, Xena. I don’t really hear anyone talking about you at school.”

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“I’ll make sure to have lunch ready when you get home.” Dad interrupted. “You’re welcome to stay for lunch too, Rebecca. We’re having grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.”

“Oh! Dad’s tomato soup is awesome! He makes everything from scratch.”

“I’ll ask my parents. I’ve only ever had tomato soup from a can before.” A car horn honked from the street. “It looks like we need to get going. Dad doesn’t like to be late.” Becca eyes widen at the book I retrieve from the table beside the door. “What is that?!”

I have a big smile appear across my face when I see her reaction. “This is my dad’s old bible. He said it was okay for me to borrow it for church, and I didn’t want to be the only one with out a bible.”

Becca gave me a wry smile and looked the book up and down. “Is it a holy bible? Like the King James Version?”

Dad spoke up. “It’s a bit older than the King James Bible but it is the Christian bible if that’s what you’re asking.” Becca might not have been able to see it but I could tell my dad was having fun with the reaction she was giving. “I told her I’ll buy her a new one if she wants to keep going.”

“I think my pastor might be interested in taking a look at this. It looks really old.” Becca gave a quick look over her shoulder towards the street. “We should get going. My dad is going to get annoyed if we are late.”

“Have fun you two.” My dad called out as we left.

I don’t really know what to expect with church but I still think it’s going to be fun learning something new like this. Dad always pushes me to try new things and broaden my horizons.
