As the carriage left a trail of dust, I turned around to see many slack jawed commoners, maids, and the Duke. Duke Adolf slowly started clapping his hands and walked toward me. With my new upgrade to the Analysis skill, I immediately knew he was the right choice to add him to the Kingdom.
“Ma boy, that looked like a fate worse den death. You gave ‘em a good thrashing, you even tore off der wings!” His wings twitched a little. “One question, where’d ya take ‘em? Ya disappeared for a while.”
“I took them to the Void. I gained a few tricks from the trip as well.” I say proudly.
He looks amused, “The Void? Isn’t that the homeland of your people?”
I gave a shrug. I wasn’t sure, but I have heard of that theory.
…
I enter the castle to find Louise. I found her sitting in her chair looking at the ceiling, as if a scene was replaying in her head. I knock on the door, bringing her back to her senses. After she acknowledged my presence, I walked in and closed the door.
Before I could speak she interrupted, “Why didn’t you kill them?”
I was taken aback, so I said, “Pardon?”
She repeated, “Why didn’t you kill them? I was watching the whole fight. I used clairvoyance to watch. I saw you were holding back so you wouldn’t kill them. Why?”
Ah, I see, “Aria told me the story. There was pain, much of it. I wanted to kill them as well. Along with that pain, there was a friendship that kept her alive. She valued your friendship, that she wanted me to spare them, not as people but as your parents.”
She was getting a little chocked up, “She said that?”
I nodded, now to bring up a pressing matter, “So now that I ruined your parents’ lives, I owe you. I will accept anything you wish to cast on me. Aside from that I guess you are now the Baroness…”
“I decline the office. I have a no desire to the rule the fiefdom; the commoners know about my parents, they’ll likely suspect me as well. As for you owing me, if it’s anything I want then,” she blushed a little before continuing, “I originally followed you to see how you would treat Aria, but my new goal is to become your bride.”
She started to approach me slowly and wrapped me in a hug. Wait, what? I question, “Wait, you do realize I killed half your family, and put the other half in critical condition right? They could die within a few days, and now you want to marry the monster that is killing off your entire family?”
She looked dissatisfied for a moment, “Geez, I was trying to work on the mood. Monster? You? Not even close. You are a monster when it comes to punishing the real monsters. My family… No better yet, those monsters that call themselves my family are the real monsters. I didn’t see it until I was 12.” She paused then continued, “It was when I was coming home from shopping, and that is when I saw a peasant family. They were begging them to forgive them.
I don’t know the offense but ‘dad’ invited them into a basement for negotiations, not knowing what they were up to, I followed secretly. My brother, Zaebzhar, was already down there. They drugged them, tied them up and beat them for days.
Eventually starvation killed them off. It terrified me. So I watched my family’s action more closely. They had ghastly high taxes, killed off peasants that offended them, bribed and threatened the cowardly Counts so they wouldn’t tell the Duke. They were parasites Alex. When I knew where the money came from, I was sickened, so I worked for my own money; I chose to go to a boarding school. When I graduated I was going to move out. That was when I learned they got a poor slave to abuse. Since I wasn’t shopping with their money, they had enough to purchase her with ease. So it is partially my fault that she wound up in that situation. Alex, I always wanted to help the commoners, but there was nothing I could do. You are a hero Alex.”
I was just thinking how awful her family when she pushed me onto the bed, I then received an Ultimatum, she said, “Since you discarded my family, I am going to need a new one. And since you owe me, you have no right to decline. So, you have two options,” she climbed on top of me, “Either you marry me, or you give me a child.”
I started looking around for an exit, “Can you give a few days to…”
I was cut off, “Rejected.” She moved in closer till she was inches away from my face. “Choose now, I will not let you escape. If you refuse to make a choice, I will make one for you.”
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
It’s not like it’s not tempting, it’s just I have no idea what kind of consequences will happen later on. So I choose option number one, “Marry! I will marry you!”
“Oh, will then I can’t wait to have many children with you! <3” She leans down lays her lips over mine.
Just then the door swung open, Princess Chloe and Aria fell to the floor while Imperial Princess Ashley was standing above them saying, “No fair! I get Chloe, but now even an ex-Baron’s daughter is your fiancée? I’m also pretty sure Aria has the ticket to be concubine number one. I am feeling left out!”
I was to make a comment on them spying on my, or why they are even here but we all heard a scream from down stairs. The room below this is my Uncle’s! I jump out the window and used my wings to slow my descent to the ground. Once I touched down I climb into the already open window to see a Cliff Elf freaking out, pacing beside my Uncle Ares. His skin had gone from the light purple to Bone White. There was purple powder and black feathers were everywhere.
“No, no. no. no. Uncle!” hearing my calls he slowly opened his eyes, ah he is alive! Good, there is still time! I put my mana into the air, it shimmered grey as I slowed down time to an almost stand still.
I watched my uncle closely; his feathers were all but gone, and his face looked twisted in pain. Slowly he lifted hand; I grasped it, suddenly time picked back up to normal time. He just cancelled my skill!
I looked at him with confusion; he just shook his head and let out a hoarse throaty voice, “I was ready… when I came down with… this. You are a blessing… to this family. You pulled this… family from depression before… you were even born.” There was a twinkle in his eye as he looked at me.
“Why?” was all I could mutter.
He ignored my question and continued, “I heard… you got to… the Void. It has been awhile… since I went there… myself. It must have… been lonely. Hey, Al can I… ask for a favor?”
I smile sourly, “You know I hate being called Al. Yes, tell me anything. What is it?”
He let out a sad, sad laugh, and said, “Can you please… treat Mariona like family? It seems… I am unable to… do it myself.”
The Cliff Elf stopped pacing and kneeled beside me, began stroking Uncle’s face, “Please, do not leave me! I... I am with child! Please, please don’t leave us! You can’t leave! Please don’t…” she was crying so hard she got choked up at the end.
Uncle Ares raised a slow, unsteady hand and touched her face, “I have… to go… my love.” his words getting weaker and weaker until they were but a whisper. His hand went limp but the Elf grabbed and held to her face and continued to beg. His spoke once more, “Live… on…” The light in his eyes faded. When Mariona noticed this, she cried uncontrollably and had her arms across his chest.
I heard stomping followed by the door being slammed open. The King had arrived with an urgent look on his face. He strode into the room and bent over my Uncle. When he learnt he was no longer in this world, a grim look came across his face. He looked at him and was shaking his head for hours. Eventually he reached inside Uncle Ares shirt and removed a pair of worn out dog tags. He studied them for a long time. When he looked up, he noticed the grieving Mariona.
He walked over to her and patted her on the shoulder. He then slipped the tags over her head and left the room without a word. She looked at the dog tags and her cries were rejuvenated.
Hours later we had the body moved to cemetery. There were many tears, and stone faces in the crowd. A Colonel was in the crowd, he was the one that said the eulogy. No one in my family could do it because of we would get choked up half way, so we had to have his closest peer do it. My father had uttered a single word; he just stared at the coffin, even when it was covered in dirt.
Days would go by and my dad would still be at the cemetery watching the grave. Eventually mom pulled him from that spot and into the castle. The very next day my mother couldn’t get out of bed. We were all crowded in the room with her.
“Come now, I will get better soon.” She lied. “I just need some rest. This room is getting a bit stuffy, so if you could…” she trailed off. Immediately everyone but my father and I left the room.
“Ah, good. Hey don’t look at me like that. I will be fine. You know what I am going to sleep, weather you are here or not!” She said defiantly, she twisted the covers over her head. Seeing any further conversation was not going to happen, we left the room.
I decided to make a resolution right then and there, “Dad, I’m going to leave the palace to look for someone to fix this.”
Dad just shook his head, “We had the best doctors here, and the most pious people out there come here. None could save her. Be they saint or sinner, this… this curse can’t be cured.” My dad walked away with his head between his hands.
“We’ll just see about that.” I whispered to no one.
I turn around and pour every drop of mana I had and formed an invisible dungeon small enough for to cover this room. I gave my Slow Time skill to the dungeon. With all my mana poured into it, it froze the very air. I am not going to let my mother die on me! My Uncle may have accepted his death, but I won’t let my mother accept hers. I just won’t.
I walked out of the room and walked briskly to my room. All the girls were sitting on my bed; Princess Chloe spoke up, and said “We’re coming too.”
