Chapter 37 to make an example

Chapter 37 to make an example

Looking over his levels, Jake came to understand that for him right now, the easiest way to gain levels would be to work on his profession. So he asked around to find out what things people needed only for Joel to catch on to what he was doing and began getting a list together for items the construction site needed and gave them to Jake with an amount of materials. Jake sat in the bushland with countless people, watching him as they went about their day. It had been a month since he showed the glass man how to make glass. And now they redesigned every building on the site to include glass windows.

“Boss, how many items have you made?” James the guardsmen asked

Yes, he and all the other guards now called him boss as Emma had made them all work for the settlement and, as such, make an oath to the owner of the settlement.

“950 glass windows for the buildings at common ranking, 2000 simple daggers, 500 self loading rifles and 32 sets of swords and shields for the mercenary group all with a rank of uncommon or higher. 900 sets of assorted tools for 90 different professions at common ranking and lastly 15 weapons pods for the new light fighters we will build when everything here has been built at common ranking.”

“Just wondering how many profession levels did you get? I’ve been wondering if I should find a profession.”

“You should, otherwise you probably won’t be able to get stronger when you reach your class cap and the levels I got were not grate but they will do. I got 100 levels.”

“Dose that mean you got 100 points to spend on your stats?”

“Ha, no. That’s the base level you get per level. If you get titles, you will probably get a multiplier for the points. For example, I have a bunch of titles that give me 70 points per profession level.”

“So then you have 7000 points.”

“From just the profession levels, yes. But like I said titles give you multipliers and other things like reductions in levels needed to level up your grade for example if you had a reduction of 5 then at my grade with it I only need 15 levels per grade and without it I would need 20 levels.”

“how do I get a title?”

“the easy way is to join the demon’s hand mercenary group as every member gets these two things first is the skill and the title.”

Path of shadows (rare) you hide in the shadows and strike fast cost of use, arcane energy and stamina. Create a barrier around yourself to hinder vision and dash from shadow to shadow. Gives 5% to damage if the target is unaware of your attack.

Member of the (Demon’s Hand Mercenary Group)

+10 points to grade level advancements and reduces levels needed to get next grade level by -5

“But as for other ways to get them, you can complete a dungeon if you can find one, that is.”

“That’s a good reason to join the mercenary group. How come it’s not spread? It would bring in lots more people to the mercenary group.”

“That information would bring in a lot of people but they would just be there for the title and not actual mercenaries, they wouldn’t stand and fight if it was required they would just be bloating the ranks and that would take resources away from those that need it.”

“But if you had more people in the demon’s hand mercenary group, then you could probably role the country.”

“No, that’s not how we operate. It may seem that we are one big army but it’s in the name we are fundamentally mercenaries that means any member can take on any job that is offered to them it could even be a job that goes against the groups goals for example if Jess and Matt were members of the group and they only decide to sell information to the US embassy because they were offered it as a job. I would have had no grounds to attack them. That is why, as the demon’s hand mercenary group, we offer rewards to try and limit those potential issues from happening.”

“But that would leave your group members always watching their backs. How could they live like that?”

“If you're not watching your back, then I would recommend you start to now. And on that note, talk to the group I trained. They should be setting up a training program. You need to join it.”

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

“I will think about it. I should get back to work before my commanding officer sees me slaking off.”

“It’s too late for that, isn’t it?” Jake said in a louder tone.

“It most definitely is. James, you should take him up on that training program. The men he trained have become actual monsters in battle.”

James left a minute later, after receiving orders from his commanding officer.

“So, what brings you out here on such a fine day?” Jake asked

“Well, I was going to ask you if you could help with the training, but after what I heard, you should really start working on gaining levels, you lucky bastard. How is it possible that you could have so many points when we have to go through so much just to get 1 point?”

“Tell me if I gave you the choice to join the demon’s hand mercenary group, would you?”

“How would that work?”

“Okay, so I have an idea you already work for me kind of right.”

“Well, yes, the settlement council employs us.”

“Yes, so if I set up an open-ended job for you and your men to protect the settlement and its interests, would you take it? The reward would be the same as you get now and your ranking in the mercenary group would need to be worked out, but in time, you could end up with a lot more benefits.”

“That’s too big of a decision for me to make alone. I will need to discuss it with my colleagues.”

“You do that. I was thinking of making a special forces unit for ground and one for space battles. Once we get there, would you be interested in that?”

“Well, that I can answer with a definite yes. But what would my position be in this unit?”

“It would be your unit to command. You have the right attitude for the job.”

“When do I start and who will be in it?”

The team I trained and that man, James, for now. But I gave the team I trained the job of finding members and to train them. It is going to be a dangerous job. Are you sure you want it?

“Yes, sir.”

“You don’t need to call me that. I’m not a sir. Just call me Jake or if you must call me boss, that at least doesn’t make me fill like an old English royal.”

“Yes boss. I will go talk to my colleagues about your offer and I will start working on putting together the special forces unit and tell you when it’s ready for deployment.”

Jake sat there for a bit longer, working on his long ass list of items he needed to make until the area’s arcane energy drained, then he moved to a different spot. By the time he got to the end of the list, Jake had gained another 50 levels, but to get the levels, he had to do three times the amount then what it took to get the 100 levels.

It had finally happened. Jake had drained an area the size of an Australian football oval. So he has started down the same path as Aaliyah. He would probably drain a galaxy soon enough. Jake opened up his interface and scrolled through the information it looks like he could fix it in time but doing any more work in this area would be detrimental to the research facility and production site being built so Jake got up and left the construction site heading into the settlement. Jake was looking around the settlement when he noticed a man selling some kind of cooked meat on a stick. Many people were interested as the line went at least for twenty metres. “It’s nice to see that businesses are opening up.” Jake said before continuing to walk to his destination. It took Jake longer than he would have preferred as on his way there wasn’t just one stall selling stuff, it just so happened to be a market and Jake just so happened to walk straight through the centre. But at least Jake got to see what was being sold and for what prices they were being sold at it seemed to be that there was a new currency being used by those that lived in the settlement but those that didn’t live in the settlement would pay with a different product. Looking closer at some of the strange currency, Jake noticed something very formal on the back of it. It was an image of himself in his demon form and it had writing going around the rim. It said freedom through adversity.

“Alright, that part’s not bad. But why an image of me and why we’re the people calling it demon credits?” Jake was saying as he entered the settlement hall to ask if they knew where Emma was. He wanted to get a quick rundown on what has been going on with the settlement lately before he went to see if the school has started yet. As he had time to take people to the other world. Jake walked up to the first person he saw and asked what he thought was an appropriate question.

“Excuse me. Can I ask where is Emma I would like to speak to here?”

“Excuse me?” The man replied in an abrupt tone

“I said excuse me, so what’s the problem?”

“That’s got nothing to do with it. People like you should call her lady Emma. And for your rudeness, no I won’t tell you where lady Emma is.” jake reached out and grabbed the man by the throat, lifting him into the air.

“Now, shall we start again? Where is Emma?”

“You dare attack a worker of this hall.” The man grunted out as jake slowly squeezed his wind pipe. The door to one room opened. “What in the hell is going on out here? I’m in an important meeting and you are causing such a commotion outside my fucken door. Explain yourself or I will kick you out of this settlement myself.” A man yelled.

“who the fuck are you to tell me what I can and can’t do in my settlement? You will get Emma now. There is clearly an issue with the people she has been hiring.” Jake shouted back as he changed to his demon form to get the point across. The man in Jake’s grasp shit himself while the man that was doing the yelling just stepped back in the room he came from and closed the door. Jake’s anger rose to heights. He didn’t think possible. Not only did this man threaten him, he also just ignored what he just said. Jake walked over to the door and with a solid kick blow the flimsy wooden door into tiny little splinters. Throwing the man he was holding into the room Jake stepped through as he looked around Jake noticed something he wished wasn’t real in the room's corner there lay a small bed made up of stacked chairs and tied to it was a beast folk of the feline type she was naked with bruises all over her body her hands tied above her head and her mouth covered but what was even more painful to see was the fact that she was not breathing the man had come back in to the room just to kill her. Jake dashed over to the man, knocking him to the ground. He placed his foot on the man’s chest. Jake grabbed both of his arms and, with a solid tug, ripped one off, then repeated the action with the other one. The man was screaming bloody murder, but to Jake’s blood filled ears it was just a whisper. After ripping off the man’s arms, Jake reached down and used his healing skills to stop the bleeding. As he did this, he looked over at the other man on the floor. To Jake’s relief, the man was still alive. It wasn’t his fault for what happened here. He didn’t deserve what Jake did to him. Jake was just getting sick of all the arrogant people he kept running into. But as for the piece of shit under his foot, Jake was going to make an example out of him.
