Emma was in her office listening to the whining of a man she had thought was smart enough to not piss off the owner of the settlement. But here she was about being attacked by someone and dragged here by one of the settlement guards.
“I want that man killed for harming me and this man here locked up for his stupidity. To think you believed the ramblings of a janitor and not the person who was put in charge of that research facility?”
“Mr Bernette, I need you to be quiet for now.” Emma said.
“why should I? This man dragged me against my will here and I won’t be quiet till I get justice.”
“Mr Bernette, if you don’t be quiet, you will never get justice.”
“I will be quiet for now, but if I don’t like the outcome, I will become the loudest voice in the settlement.”
“Whatever you want, Mr Bernette. Now, can you tell me why you have brought this man here?”
“The owner directed me to do so, and he also said tell you to send someone he can actually work with.”
“So it was Jake that sent you here?”
“Yes, I met him at the main gate. I could never not be able to recognise him.”
“Mr Bernette, do you know what you have done?”
“What I have done?” Mr Bernette asked, confused.
“If I got this right, you verbally abused the owner of this territory, then tried to make him your janitor. Did I get that right?”
“No, I didn’t. That man clearly wasn’t the owner. He was a janitor.”
“Mr Bernette, have you ever met the jake?”
“No.”
“The answer to that question is yes, Mr Bernette.” Emma yelled before making her voice softer and said, “Mr Bernette, take a seat. I will talk to you about your next assignment after I find your replacement.” As she said this, a group of people walked in with Eric. Lady Emma, this is the team that found the mining site.
“Can you tell me your names and if I’m not wrong, two of you can use blueprints?”
“Yes, my lady, our team originally had five members, but one didn’t return. I am Joel Spencer, one of the two you just mentioned. This is Harrison Lopez, the other one, and finally our team’s fighters, Mary Jones and Lewis Walker.”
“Your team will receive the rewards promised to you but I have a new mission for all of you Mr Spencer and Mr Lopez you two will work for the demon’s hand mercenary group’s founder and Miss Jones and Mr Walker you will work with the guards at the new construction site the nice man here will take you all to the site.”
“But, that’s my job.” Mr Bernette said
“You lost that job when you fucked up and attacked the owner of the settlement.”
“But, I didn’t know.”
“That’s right, so you treated him as you would one of the others, and might I say you shouldn’t be in charge of a shita.” The man just looked confused at Emma. “It’s a fuken toilet, you idiot. Now go look after the new mining site and don’t let me see you again till the job is done.” Emma turned to talk to the group. “You four will be working directly under the founder, and his commands are the only ones you need to worry yourselves about. But you two.” Emma pulled Mr Lopez and Mr Spencer aside. “technically you will work for the founder but he is going to leave the job to you. He will just do what he wants and won’t think of any problems that may arise because of that. So here is a side job for you to clean up the mess he creates.”
“Yes, lady Emma.”
“Ok settlement guardsmen, take them back to the construction site please.”
The group of mercenaries entered the site. “Let me ask where the owner is.”
The guard walked off toward the only fully constructed building.
“James, you’re finally back.” The officer said
“Yes sir, I’ve brought the replacements and two demon’s hand mercenary fighters that will work with us under the command of the owner.”
“Well, where are they, then?”
“Outside, sir, I thought it would be wise to take the to the owner first. That could be an issue. He went out with some men for training his helping us work better as a team if you would like to take them out there. He said that they would be close to the old military camp. But leave me the replacement for Bernette. I really hate this job.”
“Yes, sir.”
James left the building and walked over to the group. “you two can enter the building. The officer will get you organised. While you two can come with me.”
“Where are we going?” Mary said,
“to find the owner, he is said to be training some of our men.”
The group left
Walking through the bushland, the group of three walked in to the abandoned military camp. Sitting around a campfire, there was a group of guards. Their faces were as white as sheets. Walking up to them, James asked, “where is the owner?” All the people at the fire shifted onto their feet and raised their weapons in unison, making a line with each guard watching another’s shadow and the surrounding area. A voice came out of the tree’s shadow behind them. “it’s okay, we are not in training right now. You can stand down your defence.” All the men lowered their weapons at the command.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“Sorry boss, we failed to detect you again.”
“Oh well, you will get there one day. Just keep trying.”
“Jake.” A female voice screamed, but before she could get to him, the team of guardsmen had already reached and had the lady pinned to the ground.
“Now that’s some good reactions.” James said
Jake spoke to the guards. "Let her go. She’s not going to do any harm, are you, Mary?”
“No, I won’t.”
After the guards released her, she walked over to Jake and hugged him. “Thank you for all the help.”
“Don’t mention it, but I donate to ask what brings you out here?”
“They assigned us the job of working under the owner’s command and helping the guards.”
“Really, that’s interesting.”
“Yer, but he won’t be able to compare to you.”
Jake just laughed. “So you think I’m a good-looking guy and the owner isn’t?”
“Well, I haven’t seen him yet, but yes, you have to be better looking than a demon.”
“Now that’s just mean.” One guard said before turning to the lady and saying in a censer tone, “They're the Same person. The man you are talking to is the owner of the settlement.”
“Now that was rood I was having fun.”
“You were just going to hurt the young lady once she found out about you, boss.”
“Wait, so you’re the owner and founder.”
“Yes, I am. It’s nice to see you again, Mary.”
“I, I’m sorry.” She said as she released her hug and took a step back.
“What have you got to be sorry about? It’s not like you have done anything wrong. So just relax. I won’t bite.” Jake said
But out of the blue, Mary muttered without thinking the word hard. The area went so silent you could have heard a pin drop. Until all the guards that Jake was training laughed loudly. “Okay, if you’re having this much fun, let’s training again.” Jake said with in a voice that could freeze a man solid.
“No boss please, we just started our break.”
“What do you mean by just started? You have been resting for at least three minutes by my count. Now start running. Ill give you a head start.”
“Why did you have to say that?” the guards said to Mary as they ran as if their lives depended on it.
“Okay, so you came out here to do what exactly?” Jake said
The two mercenaries were confused.
“Fine, see if you can hunt down those guards. It will be good practice for you all. And how about you did you wish to join in with the training?” Jake asked James.
“No, I think I will leave for now.”
“Oh, too bad. You could have joined your fellow guards in the fun.”
James said to the two mercenaries as he left, “good luck.”
Ten days had passed with Jake and the two mercenaries hunting down the guards repeatedly. In the beginning Jake was working with the two mercenaries but as they got better Jake switched it up and began hunting them as well as they tried to hunt the guards. Jake popped out of a shadow behind Mary and Lewis and said, “do you know what? This has been the most fun I have had in quite some time.” Bringing his hands down on their neck, both of them had been knocked unconscious.
“Well, I guess it’s time for a break.” Jake said out loud. As soon as he rested his head, the group of guards jumped down from the treetops on to his position. Jake had been waiting for this moment just before they grabbed him Jake teleported away only to dash back at them kicking one in the back and throwing another into the tree trunk leaving four more to take down the guard regained their composure and regrouped “formation 4.”
Jake popped out of another shadow and grabbed the man that was giving commands. Once the commander was taken out, a group like this would normally crumble but it didn’t “formation 3.” Another guard said as the group moved to protect each other when Jake struck again making another man fall “formation 2.” A man yelled. Followed by a crashing sound, “formation 1,” the last guard yelled as he swung his body around every few seconds. Jake stepped out of his shadow as the man swung around, hitting Jake with his wooden practice weapon. Stepping back, Jake smiled
“well done, training is over. You win. What reward did your team decide on?”
“we have decided that we would like you to create a special operations group when you bring the guards under your command.”
“I can do that, but you are going to have to train the people and pick the people.”
Joel Spencer was sitting in the office fending off the constant stream of angry scientists and smith’s about how small there budgets are and issues of why they need more space for their specific areas there was one that came back every day to whine about how the research into glass was the most important factor in creating spaceships he would go on and on about it and today that man was here trying again to get more resources.
The door swung open as a group of ragged looking people walked in.
“Mary, what happened?” Mary looked up at Joel.
“I lost.”
“Lost what?”
“My reward.”
“You’re not making any sense. Why are you in this state?”
“She failed to win against us. She had plans for her reward, but since she failed, she didn’t get it. Now she’s moping around,” one guard said.
“What is this? I was here first, so why are you talking to these people and not answering my question?”
“No, your department will not receive any more resources. You have already received an increase to your budget and you will not receive any more.”
“But glass is the most important thing we need to figure out. It’s not as easy as throwing sand in a fire.” The door cracked open and Jake walked in looking directly at the man and said, “sit down. I’m going to show you how to make it. Then the only job you will need to do is figure out how a profession user can reproduce the technique.”
“Oh, it’s you again. I’m not listening to the ramblings of an idiot that doesn’t know what his talking about.” The man started to leave when Jake grabbed the man’s long hair as he walked past and slammed him to the ground, making a crack in the floor.
“Jake, what are you doing? He is one of the settlements.” Mary walked over to Joel and spoke with him. Joel almost shouted his next sentence “his, the founder.”
Jake sat down beside the man and pulled out his cauldron. “Just shut up and watch.”
Jake heated the cauldron, then added sand and let it get to an appropriate temperature before saying, “with the way I make things, I will be creating the housing for the glass to fit in, then I will make the glass. Making glass itself is a relatively simple process. It just requires heat sand with a high silica content. Then all you need to do is pour in a whole bunch of mana and you will get glass.”
“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard. Glass requires you to have at least these principal ingredients Sand (Silicon Dioxide), Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate), Limestone (Calcium Carbonate).”
“Just shut up and watch.”
“I will not shut up when you are wrong and wasting my time.”
Jake not listening to the man pulled out a simple window frame the same size as the one to the one the building has inside the frame sat a beautiful pane of glass with the image of the man sitting beside him with he was worshipping a cauldron and there was writing on the glass that said glass is heat, sand and mana.
“Is that proof enough for you yet we are in a universe where magic exists, not the old world you seem to be stuck in? Now go do your job and stop complaining, or I will personally take all of those resources you got away.”
