Chapter 5 - First monster encounter

It has been around six months since my brother and sister left for the capital, things are finally starting to be normal again. Today is a big day for me, I turn six today and that means my father will hire a sword master to train me starting today.

I'm so excited I can barely wait, I wonder what kind of person they are like. I bet they have all kinds of experiences as an adventurer, I just want to meet them already... But according to my father it will be about five days until they make it out to our estate.

Although that killed my hopes for training with them right away, I'm still excited to spend this day with my family. My mom let me stay home today for my birthday, so for the last two hours I've just been reading adventure books in our study.

"Onyx where are you?" Yelled my mom from the kitchen

"I'm in the study mom, one second I'm on my way!"

As I get up to head towards the kitchen, someone jumps at me from the door way scaring me.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY ONYX!!!!" Yelled Sophia with a giant smile on her face

"You...you remembered?" Said Onyx trying to hide his embarrassment

"How could I forget the birthday of my hero?" Sophia just looked at him confused why he would ever think that

When she looks at me like that, I cant help but blush. She really is my best friend

"Oh...uhm aren't you suppose to be at school Sophy?" Onyx stuttered

"My father let me stay home, so I can hang out with you on your big day. I think he's happy I finally have a friend" said Sophia shyly

"Oh tell him I said thanks, I cant wait to spend the day with you!" Onyx grabbed her hand and started heading for the garden

Right before he was about to reach the door, he heard someone yell his name

"And where do you think your going son, come over here and sit down. I just finished cooking lunch" Emily said while holding her hips

"Oh.. yes mom, of course how can I forget your cooking" Onyx hurried to the table while still holding Sophia's hand

"Thank you Mrs. Quill for the meal, and for inviting me today to be with Onyx!" Sophia bows to Emily

"You're welcome Sophy, You and Onyx are inseparable how could I not invite you on his big day." Said Emily proudly

"Mom... you're embarrassing me" Onyx's cheeks are flushed at this point

"I'm just teasing you, don't mind me just eat your food" Emily walks to her bedroom

"I'm sorry for my mom Sophy" Onyx apologized while still hiding his embarrassment

After the meal, me and Sophy started our daily training. I usually swing my training sword one-hundred times, them Sophy heals me. And then we repeat, until I've swung my sword one-thousand times. After that, I walk her home and talk about growing up and the future adventures that are to come.

But today was a little different then our usual routine, you see as we were walking home I spotted something slightly inward the fields of potatoes. A little green humanoid figure, I cant make out any of its facial features but my whole body is screaming danger.

Sophia hasn't noticed it yet, and I hope it doesn't notice us... But I spoke too soon. I hear a shout and then it full sprints towards us, its about 30 seconds away at this point.

"Sophy you need to listen to me right now, no questions asked okay!" I yelled at the top of my lungs

"Huh... What's going on?" Sophy then turns to the yell, and freezes in place

"You need to run as fast as you can, I will fight it... Please stay safe, so after I finish you can heal me. Let me be your hero for real this time!" Onyx readied his sword with unwavering resolve as the approaching goblin comes.

Sophia turns back the way we came, and sprints to my house. It's about two minutes away, her goal was to get my father who can definitely slay the goblin.

Without turning back, she has full faith in Onyx surviving until someone can come and help him.

"Come at me you filthy Goblin, let me show you my resolve" Onyx readies his sword, and points it towards the goblin

The Goblin reaches Onyx, and tried to tackle him to the ground.

Too slow.

Onyx quickly side steps and slashes its back, the wooden Training Sword easily slashes the meat on its back.

It's bleeding a green liquid, but it shows no sign of going down.

As it circles Onyx looking for a weakness, Onyx makes a bad move. He charges it full of confidence, He connects a shot on its neck but the sword doesn't go all the way through. He is now stuck face to face with the Goblin and it scratches his arm, he now has four deep gashes in his forearm that wont stop bleeding.

Onyx takes a step back, the Goblin tries to come in and finish him off. As it gets close Onyx Thrusts his sword into the open wound on the Goblins neck, this time it goes through thanks to Thrust. Which he got through levelling up Swordsmanship.

While his sword is embedded into the Goblins neck, he leg sweeps the Goblin taking it to the ground. He is now on top of the Goblin, He pulls out his blade and then shoves it through the Goblins mouth and it pierces its spinal cord before going out the other side.

Onyx has just won his first fight in this world, He wanted to use Gluttony but he see's his father and Sophy approaching him. Maybe another time, but for now he basks in his glory.

Huh.. I levelled up from that? I will have to check my stats later, I'm still gushing blood from my forearm.

"ONYX! are you okay!" Yelled my father, his voice filled with fear

"O...Onyx.. your arm, hurry let me heal it!" Sophia runs to me full speed, clearly panicked

*HEAL* *HEAL *HEal* *heal* heal...* *smack*

Sophy falls on her butt, after spamming her holy magic, but the wound on my arm was gone the first time. She was just scared and kept on casting it, she's really too sweet to me. I don't know what I did to deserve a friend like her.

"Onyx did you do this?" My father completely shocked while looking at the mutilated Goblin with my sword still piercing its skull

"Yes father... I told Sophy I would protect her no matter what" I said exhaustedly while winking at Sophy

Sophia fidgets with her fingers completely blushed in the cheeks

"I knew you were a ladies man, but this is too much don't you think?" Thomas just stares at Onyx blankly before continuing

"I never would expect a six year old boy to slay a goblin, they have the same strength as a grown man. Even though they are still rank F monsters" Thomas still in shock as he looks at the corpse

"Sorry father, I didn't mean to worry you. But I have good news!" Onyx switching the mood of the convo as he yells excitedly

"Let me guess, you levelled up?" Said his father while shaking his head

"Uh.. how did you know?" Onyx tilts his head in confusion

"Because, your first few levels are easy to get slaying monsters. But that's when it gets dangerous, you hit a wall and feel like you need to find stronger monsters to satisfy your growth." Thomas looks up at the sky

"Please heed my warning, take your time. I've lost many friends to monsters, I don't want to lose a son as well. If you hit a wall, form a party and conquer monsters together at your own pace. Never put your stats above your safety you hear me!" Thomas yells at Onyx

"ye... Yes father I understand" My hands still visibly shaking from all the adrenaline during my battle. I look at my forearm and still see four outlines on it from the scratch I took earlier, I guess the scars are proof of my battle.

"Now look alive, grab your sword and then the Goblins legs. We have to carry it to the Adventurers guild before dark, they will buy it from us and process it for parts. If left here it will attract more unwanted monsters" Thomas pulls out Onyx's training sword and hands it to him

"Sophy you should go home, It should be safe from here. I will talk to you tomorrow!" said Onyx as he grabbed the legs of the Goblin

"O..okay, thank you again for saving me... My hero!" Sophia's cheeks went red as she ran home, not giving Onyx time to process it

"hahaha, I miss young love. You cherish her you hear me boy!" My father yelled that at me out of nowhere

Of course I will cherish Sophy, she's my best friend and my future companion. I would do anything to keep her happy, even if I have to slay a dragon tomorrow.

"I will father... today has taught me a valuable lesson." Onyx looks down at his feet

"I need to get stronger, no I must get stronger to protect the ones I love" Onyx squeezes his fist tightly, you can start to see blood leak from his hand

As Thomas saw this, he couldn't do anything but watch. His son is determined and that makes him proud as a father, but he's also worried shitless now. What will my son do, how far is he willing to go for the ones he loves.

{I just hope he doesn't forget about himself, and continues to live for himself as well...} Thomas is just staring blankly in thought while still holding the Goblin.

"Dad... you okay you aren't moving and this thing is heavy!" Onyx pleaded while struggling to hold up his end

We entered the adventurers guild after a 10 minute walk from where I slain the Goblin, as we came in a Woman greeted us at the desk then quickly had someone come grab the Goblin from us.

"Welcome to the Adventurers guild Lord Quill, Did you slay that Goblin?" She asked curiously

"Actually believe it or not... It was my son here, it attacked him as he was walking home a friend" He said awkwardly

"Uh... you mean the child next to you? He slayed a Goblin?" her eyes wide open, as if she's not believing what she's hearing

"Yes this child here is Onyx, my youngest son. And trust me no ones more confused then I am, I never ran that fast in my life when I heard he was fighting the Goblin" Thomas has tears coming down his cheek thinking about it

"But when I finally got there, I saw my son with his foot on the Goblins chest pushing the sword through its neck. I'm honestly shocked..."

"Wow, I cant believe this. Is the young Lord interested in being an adventurer?" She asked quickly fumbling for the registration papers

"ABSOLUTELY NOT!" my father yelled

"He's still only six years old, if he wants to be an adventurer when he grows up that's fine. But he's way too young as he is now" Thomas furious at the gesture of the guilds woman

"err... Understood sir, Well Onyx I await your business in the future. I know you are going to do great things."

"U-uhh... yes I await the time for me to be an adventurer" I bowed at the woman

"Oh here I almost forgot" She pulls out three copper coins and hands them to me

"This is the payment for the Goblin, usually you get five copper but the body of the goblin was mutilated" she said still in shock

"I understand, thank you very much"

Me and my father head home, dreading the moment we tell my mom what happened....

Before we even made it inside, my mom comes rushing outside full speed and picks me up into a full on hug. She has tears rolling down her cheeks, and she's rubbing my back saying "everything will be okay, you're home now".

This is really embarrassing and my father isn't helping me out, he's trying to sneak away.

"Mom, I'm okay I promise. The Goblin attacked me and Sophy but I killed it, It was no match for me..." I stated proudly tightening my hug

"Huhh... y-you killed a Goblin?" she releases me and I fall to the floor

Not cool mom that actually hurt as I land on my ass

"THOMAS!" she yelled catching him before he got inside the door

"Is what he said true? He slayed a Goblin without your help!" She is furious but also can see she is still in shock from what she just heard

"Yes honey... I hate to admit it. I ran as fast as I could, but the Goblin was already dead on arrival. So I had to take it to the guild before it attracted more monsters." My dad looked at her wet eyes

"I'm sorry we took so long, leaving you here worrying if he's okay or not. That must have been hard for you, I'm sorry!" He slowly walks up to her, and embraces her

After about 10 minutes of apologizing and comforting my mom, she finally led us inside to have dinner. I bragged about how I levelled up finally, but you can clearly see she was not entertained by the thought...

"I think I'm going to bed first tonight, you both worried me to death" She gets up after dinner and heads to her room

"Goodnight mom, I love you..." I feel bad I put her through this trauma today

Although it was good for me in the end, how could I have guessed there would be a Goblin in our field. I'm just happy Sophy is okay, and that I decided to walk her home today. Who knows what would have happened

I make my way to bed, just four more days and my tutor will be here. I can't wait to finally get strong, strong enough to where Goblins stand no chance, strong enough to protect everyone I love and care for. Strong enough to not fear dying even in the eyes of a dragon, and for that dream to become a reality I have to accept the fact that I'm weak right now.

I'm so weak, if one wrong move happened I would be in the Goblins place...

With this resolve, I will train even harder then I ever have. I will no longer be weak, please train me diligently my future master. For I am weak, but I wish to be strong... I fade into a deep sleep...
