Chapter 44

The Sands lost two people.

The teammates they lost were Kerl Sands, their Healer, and Hunt Sands, their Shooter. Even Sipher was silent as we carried them through the gate and dug a grave for them beside the gate to the fifty-first floor.

“They made it to Tier Five.” Lace put his hand over his heart after we’d filled in the grave. His bloodshot eyes glared at Gall. “What was that in there?”

Gall turned his CB so the other man could see. “It’s the elite variant, but that only for when there is…” His voice drifted off as both men turned to Rishard. “More than ten.”

“I wouldn’t do that.” The High Priest pointed his hand at them as I started to back up. I felt something sharp poke my back. I didn’t have to turn around to know that there was a dagger in my back.

“Everyone needs to just stay calm and this will all be over soon.” Rishard eyed the rest of the group, then turned to Sipher. “I believe we had a deal?”

“I don’t have the item on me right now…” Sipher nodded at the gate. “But I can go get it real fast.”

“Sipher, you Heathen!” Lace tried to stand up, but an Adventurer in shiny metal armor became visible next to him and pushed him to his knees.

“I told you to stay calm…” Rishard shook his head. “Meson, restrain them.”

A man in a tan robe materialized behind the High Priest and started pointing at us one at a time. Each time he pointed at a person, chains wrapped around them, binding their arms and legs. When he pointed at Gall, the bald man smirked and Mesi staggered backwards and grabbed his head.

The golden man started to raise his hand, but a knife appeared in his neck. The milky-white woman in what looked like tan rags pulled the knife out and she flashed as he hit the sand.

“NO!” Nyssa started to get up and her father’s killer turned to face her.

“Stop!” Rishard grabbed the other woman’s arm, then blasted Nyssa with something that knocked her out. “That was the one we wanted to test it on!” He pulled the knife out of her hand and I could see the rage on his face. “Lyssa!” Rishard shook her. “I told you NOT to kill anyone unless I told you to.”

“But he…”

“NO!” Rishard slapped her to silence her. “Go with Sipher to make sure he brings back the item.” He looked over at the open gate where the golden bandit was waiting. “Nise, go with them.”

An ebony woman with white hair and red eyes in tan leather armor materialized beside him and began walking with Lyssa towards Sipher. I watched the three of them disappear while the milky man continued to bind us.

“You’re using the item on us?” I was looking for an opening. I could use Shadowstep to get behind whoever was poking me in the back, but unless I knew how many there were, I didn’t want to repeat what Gall had done.

Rishard chuckled. “All we had to do was leak that it was immortality and the flies came buzzing.” He shook his head as I was bound and dropped to the ground. The High Priest knelt down in front of me. “I think you’ll be our first subject.” He smirked. “For Immortal servitude.”
