Sipher was smiling.
“Which part are you?” The brown-haired, brown-eyed, golden man looked between the three of us, then focused on Gall, who had just taken his helmet off. “Gall! So this is a rescue!”
“Here.” Nyssa put one of the silver chips in the first guards CB and the restraints clicked open.
“Ah…” Sipher began rubbing his wrists. “It feels good to be free.”
“You’re not free yet.” Nyssa growled as she turned to him. “Leader or not. Is this rumor about you knowing the secret of immortality true or not? Because if it’s not, I say we leave him here.”
“It’s true! It’s true!” Sipher held up his hands, then pointed at the CB that had freed him. “Do you think I could have that?’
Nyssa held up her hand as Gall started to hand it to him. “That was too easy…” She eyed the bandit. “You’ve been here for days. Probably had Kire dance around in that head of yours, yet everything we’ve heard says you’ve not said a word…”
“That’s because they aren’t friends like Me and Gall are!” He looked between Gall and Nyssa. “Family?”
“Daughter.” Gall folded the uniform he’d just taken off the guard over his arms. “But she makes a good point.”
“Okay, did Kire come and try to poke around in my head?” Sipher grinned and tapped his head. “I’ve got a mind trap in here. Try to poke around in there and you’ll get your finger stuck. Try to pull your hand out too fast and…” He smacked his fingers and thumb together like something was biting his brown hair.
“So Kire didn’t get anything. Is that why he’s executing you?” Nyssa leaned against the table.
If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
“That’ll cost you.” The older man grinned and shrugged.
“I’d say a rescue is worth a lot.” Nyssa stood up, forcing Sipher to take a step back.
“You’re pretty bold for the daughter of one of my captains.” The golden man eyed her. “You do know what I can do?”
“Die tomorrow.” Nyssa looked around the room.
“That’s not going to happen..!” Sipher closed his mouth when he realized what he said.
“WHAT!?!” Nyssa grabbed Sipher by the shirt collar.
Levelwise, they were probably pretty close, but if I had to bet on who would win right now, I’d easily pick Nyssa. Which was the same conclusion that Sipher came to.
“Okay-okay-OKAY!” The golden man put his hands up. “I cut a deal with Kire that he’d let me go if I stayed in here for a few days so that he could root out any spies he had in his city.” He winced. “And he wants a demonstration about how it works!”
“He WHAT?” Nyssa yanked Sipher close to her, then pushed him away from her into the wall.
“Kire is going to the demonstration?” I swallowed. The God I wanted to see dead was going to see what the secret to Immortality is. As much as I wanted to take Kire down for the things he’d done, I knew that the Tier difference was too high. Kire’s main stat was magic and if I had to guess I’d say it was over six-thousand. Nothing I had could touch that.
Sipher nodded. “So you see? I’m not really in any danger…”
An explosion shook the room.
“E, was that you?” Gall threw the uniform at Sipher.
“Nope.” Ella was still chewing. “Gimme a sec…By the Gods! You need to get out of there NOW! That’s a lot of firepower. And they’ve got something that’s making holes in the walls!”
This Jail was made out of Tier Five and Six materials. It would take something at LEAST the same Tier once things got that high to break it. Which meant there was probably a Tier Six going our way that wanted to take Sipher.
I held out the stolen CB. “Maybe this will hide you long enough for us to get away.”
