Chapter 82. Huang Wen after his father's death.

Chapter 82. Huang Wen after his father's death.

From the top of the small hill, Huang Wen watched the battle between the army from Ningde against the zombies from Fuzhou.

The army from Ningde slowly moved toward Gutian Town's defense line from the east. Every time they gained a foot hold, they would assign a team to defend the position. But as they moved further toward the town, they were forced to spend more men at defending their territory. At one point they would be forced to stop.

If only the army from the town would move out and attacked the zombies from the other side, they might be able to divide the zombies and created a gap in their siege, allowing movement from and to the town.

But the army inside the town did nothing.

Captain Zhao Qing who angrily argued with his superior, decided to act on his own, despite the threat of insubordination. He couldn't move his men to attack the east side, since he had to fight Colonel Wen Liang's men first, in order to reach that position. He decided to attack from his own post. Captain Zhao Qing hoped that the attack from Ningde would draw and weaken the siege on his side.

Unfortunately, that day, the zombies still too much for them to defeat.

The day passed by. The reinforcement from Ningde built entrenchment around their camp. They had to spend many of their men to watch over their camp, less they would be surrounded by their enemy and end up just like their companion at the Gutian Town. Several attempt were made to contact the army inside the town but failed.

Captain Zhao Qing watched them from afar miserably.

Secretly he wondered of Huang Wen. Would Huang Wen fulfilled his promise and brought reinforcement from Nanping?

Meanwhile Huang Wen, Chen Fang, Xia Bao, Zhang Xuan, Chen Yao and Xia Yue, watched the battle from their secured base. Sometimes Zhang Xuan and the girls watched Huang Wen with opened mouth, wanted to say something. But when they saw his serious expression, they changed their mind. Chen Fang and Xia Bao on the other hand, seemed to approve Huang Wen's decision. They watched the battle scene through the binoculars quietly.

Yu Heng, Yie Tang, Jian Bao, Mi Fang, Deng Zheng and Yan Chou, who now acted as Huang Wen's captains, had different opinion among them. They quietly discussed Huang Wen's inaction among themselves, but in general they still had their faith in him. Besides, unlike the common soldiers, they knew of Huang Wen's plan to win the town for himself.

Everyone else in the camp was anticipating a battle. Some were relieved, some were disappointed, when they saw the day passed without any instruction for battle. Rather they were commanded to rest for the night, aside from those who were on guard duty.

It was Yu Heng's and other captain's responsibility to keep their spirit high.

The 3,000 men who came from Nanping was led by Chen Fang and Xia Bao. But as soon as they met Huang Wen, Huang Wen re-arranged the structure of command. Chen Fang, Xia Bao, Zhang Xuan, Chen Yao and Xia Yue now were his staffs and advisers.

In rank they were higher than Yu Heng and his comrades, but they had no direct command to those 3,000 men. Instead Huang Wen assigned Yu Heng and the other five as his captains. Each was commanding 500 men. Assisted them in their duty were the other 24 men out of 30 who were assigned with him in the beginning. They were promoted to lieutenants and each was commanding 100 men.

Chen Fang and Xia Bao knew that Huang Wen decisively separate them from their men, but didn't oppose his decision. Zhang Xuan of course, supported his decision. While those 3,000 men, they came for Huang Wen, as such they naturally had no objection with Huang Wen's arrangement.

Inside the tent, Huang Wen and the others held a meeting.

"I think, the reinforcement from Ningde had enough power to break the siege. The commander didn't act rashly. He carefully defend each of his territory and didn't greedily advance.", said Xia Bao.

"The zombies army from Fuzhou tried to lure them several times, but the Ningde's army refused to fall into their trap.", Yu Heng added.

"But they don't know that Colonel Wen Liang betray them.", said Chen Fang.

To which Mi Fang said, "I think both the army from Fuzhou and Colonel Wen Liang's in Gutian, are waiting for that moment. The moment that colonel shows his true color, it will be a devastating blow to the army from Ningde."

Xia Bao then turned to Huang Wen and asked, "Are you waiting for that moment as well?"

Now, everyone turned their attention to Huang Wen. Huang Wen was staring at the map while attentively listening their discussion, until Xia Bao turned the focus on him.

He lifted his head and looked around, "I was wondering ..."

No one interrupted him. Everyone was waiting for him to continue.

"... will it be better for us if they thoroughly defeat the reinforcement from Ningde?"

"Or..."

"Will it be better for us, if we make the reinforcement retreated back to Ningde with most of their forces intact?"

Huang Wen then silently thought over the options. His expression didn't show any request for advises. The others quietly waited for him to make the decision. It took a while, some of them who attended the meeting began restless.

Finally Huang Wen made a decision, "We'll inform the reinforcement of Ningde of Colonel's Wen Liang's betrayal. They might not believe us, but at least they will approach the town cautiously. We will inform them of the attack to Ningde from Fuzhou, as well."

"Mean while, we should keep our forces ready. Whenever that moment happened, when Colonel Wen Liang openly betray the army from Ningde. When the battle at the east side at its peak. We'll move to destroy them from the west."

"Is there any questions?", Huang Wen ended his explanation.

They looked around and saw no one asked any questions, then Xia Bao said, "We understood. Let's go with your plan."

Chen Fang then asked, "Who will go to give the information to the reinforcement army from Ningde?"

Mi Fang then stood and said, "Leader Huang, let me do it."

Huang Wen looked at Mi Fang and asked, "Are you sure? Do you think you can do it properly?"

Mi Fang nodded his head, "I do."

Huang Wen scratched his chin and then nodded his head, "Alright, you may go. But before you leave, I want you to see me in private first. When are you planning to leave?"

Mi Fang gave it a though and then answered, "Tonight, I'll make a round route toward their camp, avoiding the army from Fuzhou. I'll enter their camp early in the morning. It will be less suspicious rather than coming to their camp at night."

Huang Wen asked again, "Do you plan to take your men with you?"

Mi Fang answered, "I'll bring 20 men with me, only until we reach the other side. I will approach their camp alone. In case they capture me, at least we have people to let you know."

Huang Wen gave it a thought for a while. Yue Rang chose the elites among his men, when he assigned 30 men to follow Huang Wen to his village. Among those thirty, there were six who were more prominent compared to the rest. Among them was Mi Fang. Huang Wen had watched him for quite some time and knew that this man had some crafty mind.

In leadership was Yu Heng. In loyalty was Jian Bao and Yan Chou. In discipline was Deng Zheng. In courage was Yie Tang. In craftiness, that would be Mi Fang.

He hated to risk them in dangerous mission. But at the same time, he realized if he didn't give important task to an able men, they would be disappointed. Sooner or later, he would lose their loyalty. Mi Fang still waited for Huang Wen's last approval.

Huang Wen nodded and said, "Okay, then you should wait here. We'll discuss a bit of your mission after this meeting."

Huang Wen then turned to the other, "Does anyone want to discuss something else?"

Shortly the meeting was ended. Everyone left with different feeling of Huang Wen's way at handling the meeting.

Xia Bao silently walked toward his own tent, thinking, "He wasn't the same boy. He grew up a bit now. It won't be easy to control him now."

Chen Fang walked beside him and thought, "He's going to be a good leader. Let's hope he doesn't lose his gentle side."

Zhang Xuan silently walked with her sisters and wondered, "He looks like a leader more and more... shouldn't I feel happy? But why do I feel anxious? ... I'm afraid of losing him, he seem a bit colder and calculating now."

Unlike the others, Xia Yue freely chatted, "Don't you think Brother Huang Wen looks much cooler now?"

"Oh, shut up... you already become his fan girl for too long.", Chen Yao snorted.

Zhang Xuan force herself to smile and join in, "I told you, he's going to be great."

Mean while, inside the tent, Mi Fang had some private conversation with Huang Wen.

"So what do you have in mind? When you see the commander of reinforcement from Ningde, what are you going to say to him?", Huang Wen asked.

Mi Fang answered, "Just as Leader Huang decided. I will tell him of Colonel Wen Liang's betrayal and the threat toward Ningde from Fuzhou. That the siege in Gutian Town is nothing but a bait for them to divide their force."

Huang Wen nodded his head, "Is that all?"

Mi Fang nodded his head, "Yes."

Huang Wen softly hummed and then asked, "And what do you think will happen?"

With a gleam in his eyes, Mi Fang answered, "He won't trust me easily. He will sent someone to check the situation at Ningde. He will keep moving forward toward Gutian Town, but he will be prepared for any sign of betrayal from Colonel Wen Liang."

"He will wait until he has confirmation from his men before made his final move to break the siege. By the time Colonel Wen Liang shows his true color, It will depend on the situation. If he think he could win, then he will force his army to wipe the enemy and occupy the town. But most likely, he will think that it won't be possible and chose to retreat."

"The moment he retreated back to Ningde, we will break through the siege from the west and joined in with Captain Zhao Qing's force to occupy the city. By this time, Colonel Wen Liang's betrayal will be known to all and we would easily win Captain Zhao Qing to our side. It won't be easy but we have a good chance to occupy the town. Even among Colonel Wen Liang's soldier there will be many who lose their morale once his betrayal is known to all."

Huang Wen then asked, "But will Captain Zhao Qing willingly give the control over Gutian town to me?"

Mi Fang chuckled and said, "He will, because he can't expect any reinforcement from Ningde anymore. Even if the army in Ningde win the battle against the army from Fuzhou, they will see their comrades in Gutian town as traitors, thanks to Colonel Wen Liang's betrayal."

Huang Wen sighed and said, "But Captain Zhao Qing doesn't betray his comrades from Ningde."

Mi Fang said, "If I say nothing about it, then how could they know about it?"

"Hmm....", Huang Wen didn't say anything and seemed reluctant to the idea.

Mi Fang added, "It's not like we're lying. We tell them the truth when we say that Colonel Wen Liang planned to betray them. Of the 'fact' that Captain Zhao Qing doesn't, we don't even have any proof of it. We could only assume he doesn't. Since we don't know for sure. Isn't it just acceptable that we don't tell them anything about it."

"This Captain Zhao Qing is a good man.", said Huang Wen.

Mi Fang smiled and said, "I believe we all will be a good friend in the future then. I know Jian Bao and Yan Chou will be happy to have a friend like him."

Huang Wen finally smiled, "If you already think that far, then I think I could entrust this mission to you without any worries. Just be careful on your way. Bring two men with you when you go to see them. Let them know you have 3,000 men waiting for you. That should be good enough to keep away any nasty thought they might have."

Mi Fang nodded his head, "Thank you for your concerns. I'll be careful when dealing with them."

That was how the day ended in Huang Wen's camp. After the meeting he didn't go to see Zhang Xuan or the other. He rather went to his own room and once again purifying his soul from external influences. He found himself become a bit detached and less emotional as he kept on purifying his soul.

Sometimes he wondered if he was taking the right path, but he made up his mind and decided to see where it was going to lead him to.
