Chapter 64. The Siege of Gutian Town (2)

The next morning, Huang Wen was standing over a small hill with Yan Chou and Jian Bao. He was going to break through the siege and enter Gutian Town. Yan Chou and Jian Bao were going to watch the road between Gutian Town to Fuzhou, but before that, they wanted to see how Huang Wen's going to break through the siege.

"I guess there aren't many zombies here compared to the other locations and there is only one man here leading the zombies.", said Huang Wen as he gave the binocular to Yan Chou.

Yan Chou and Jian Bao took turn to use the binocular. There were about ten thousands zombies, led by one man. The man wore leather armor. He carried a shield and a sword. Since the man had such equipment, without doubt, he was one of those who gained power by absorbing soul essence after the changes. Yan Chou and Jian Bao wondered about that man's level and stats.

Huang Wen on the other hand, after he learned about his soul realm and had an insight of how the unseen energy related to his stat. He no longer used his stat windows but learned to know instinctively of his own level and stats. He could also use his third eyes to roughly learn of other people's level and stats. He no longer thought in numbers, levels and stats. It was less informative but in its own way was far more profound. He could understand or feel every little nuance, things that could not be categorize in term of stats.

He watched that man and used his spiritual sense, to read his status and condition.

That man was watching over one of Gutian Town's defense post at that time. He suddenly felt a threat looming over him. He instinctively turned around to look behind him and drew his sword at the same time.

For a few seconds his eyes scanned his surrounding and slowly pulled toward the small hill where Huang Wen, Yan Chou and Jian Bao were standing and watching him. He squinted his eyes and could see three men were standing there. The moment his eyes fell on Huang Wen, his heart began to beat faster.

It was at that moment, when Huang Wen began to jog toward his direction.

They were still far apart from each other, no less than two km away. But fear already began to creep into his heart.

He was battle hardened man, how could he be terrified by such feeling. He gripped his sword hard and sent a command to his zombies to attack Huang Wen.

Ten thousands zombies moved at the same time.

This man obviously much better than Wang Shi, the zombies moved like an organized armies, they were divided in divisions and formed a battle formation. It was far from a mere horde of zombies, it was an army of zombies.

They were getting closer by minutes, two kilometers covered in less than ten minutes and the first few zombies began to fell under Huang Wen's bastard sword.

It wasn't a scene of mass slaughter, the way Yan Chou and Jian Bao imagined. Huang Wen chose to slip through the zombies instead killed them as much as he could. Only when he was cornered and forced to kill that he killed a zombie to open his way toward the man who commanded them.

Since he met Ding Yun, Huang Wen grew reluctant to kill a zombie.

After all zombies were victims too and unlike his previous thought, a zombie could actually regain their consciousness. While zombies killed human because they lost their memories and was driven by their natural instinct. People like the man who commanded them now, did it consciously. He made a choice to serve a demon and killed his own kin.

If he had to judge between who deserved to be killed, the zombies or the man who commanded them. It wasn't hard for Huang Wen to make the decision. He would choose to kill the man over the zombies, any day.

There was also another change in his heart, now that he had the ability to see pass-through the game like setting, experience points, stats and skills. He began to realize that this was a reality. Of course, he always realized that this was reality, but the game like setting became one of his psychological defense, when he had to do something that went against his conscience.

He still killed some of the zombies, because it was simply impossible to go through ten thousands of them without killing many of them. But he killed them sparingly.

With the game-like information and mechanic gone, some of his old self slowly returned. He lost some of his decisiveness. Even as he was getting closer to his target, there was part of him who wondered, would he really kill him?

On the small hill, Yan Chou asked Jian Bao, "Do you see anything special about Leader Huang's movement?"

Jian Bao watched through the binocular and answered, "All the training with the sword and the martial art, surely paid off. He moves easily even when he is surrounded by so many zombies. He doesn't waste any of his stamina."

The man who commanded the zombies also thought that Huang Wen was saving his stamina.

They were not entirely wrong, but the truth, after long practice, currently Huang Wen's passive skill, martial arts had reached another level. With his martial art and with his current insight, Huang Wen's movement's efficiency was much improved. He could slaughter his way through them without depleting his stamina.

The fight attracted many people's attention. The soldiers who were defending Gutian Town near that place watched it. Couple other zombie's commander also watched it. But only the man who became Huang Wen's target who could feel the threat coming out of Huang Wen and treated him seriously.

The others watched it as some fascinating fighting scene.

Some soldiers began to put a bet on whether he could break through the zombies and reached the town or not. While the zombie's commander who had no love for their colleagues, wondered how many zombies died before he took action.

The man was irritated as he watched Huang Wen kept moving forward and yet to be killed by his horde of zombies.

Wang Yuehei didn't take it lightly when someone who were entrusted with commanding zombies had too much casualties. Although they had abundant numbers of zombies, each killed zombies means lost soul essence which an alternative for demon's source of power aside from cultivating normally. Wang Yuehei wouldn't go as far as punished him for killed zombies, but when two men had similar achievement during the battle, number of casualties would be another factor in determining reward or promotion.

Gritting his teeth, he used his skill and suddenly disappeared from his last position. How could Huang Wen knew that his target wasn't there any longer? Even those who watched the battle attentively couldn't catch it with their eyes.

One moment he was there and within a blink he disappeared.

"Where did he go?"

"Did he run away from that young man?"

The soldiers who was watching the fight talked about the man disappearance.

"Jian Bao, this is bad. He must be planning something.", said Yan Chou.

"Where is he now?", Jian Bao asked Yan Chou who used the binocular.

"I don't know, I can't find him. What should we do?", Yan Chou frantically tried to find the man.

"Let me try.", Jian Bao took the binocular from Yan Chou.

He tried to scanned the battle scene methodically, but there were too many zombies there. And the man purposefully instructed the zombies to attack freely without following certain formation. More zombies were injured by Huang Wen's sword then before. It happened because they attacked viciously and didn't care of their defense. Huang Wen still calmly tried to minimize the casualty but he was forced to attack more decisively.

With his target disappeared, it seemed he didn't know which direction he should take. After a while, Huang Wen began to take the shortest route toward Gutian Town.

Ten minutes passed and nothing special happened, Huang Wen steadily moved through the zombies toward Gutian Town. Although it was something to see, how he could break through thousands of zombies, but it wasn't the scene that was expected by those who watched the battle.

"Is it really going to end like this?"

"Hah, I win the bet, I'm sure he will be able to pass them all and reach our post here."

"No, he doesn't fight against the commander. The bet is cancelled."

"No you can't, that's not what we're betting on."

The soldier began to lose interest.

Yan Chou and Jian Bao who kept watching the fight, scratched their head.

Yan Chou shook his head, "Now, there is no way he'll just flee or hide like that."

Jian Bao nodded his head, "He definitely have some plan, but surely Leader Huang aware this fact too."

"Let's trust him.", said Yan Chou.

Jian Bao nodded, "Yes, let's believe in him."

The man who suddenly disappeared, currently walked among the zombies. He looked like a zombies. He walked like a zombie. His appearance exactly looked like a zombie. The only difference was the fact that he held  a sword in one of his hand.

He carefully dragged it on the earth and positioned his hand that hold the sword, behind his body.

He actually had the skill to clone the appearance of other humanoid near him. He didn't really changed, but rather the skill was creating an illusion. Behind his zombie look, he was still wearing the leather armor. Only the shield, he had to leave it.

Now, he carefully moved along with the other zombies, sneakily approached Huang Wen from behind.

Even if Huang Wen saw him, he would see nothing but a zombie. Huang Wen steadily moved toward Gutian Town and the man slowly but surely crept closer.

Ten minutes passed without anything special happened to those who watched it from afar. Huang Wen pushed and slipped through the zombies, he rarely killed or injured a zombie if he didn't have to. Which was a good thing for that man who pretended to be a zombie. It was ten minutes of anticipation for that man.

The excitement and thrill of hunting, stay under the cover and secretly sneaked closer to his prey. He used to hunt, he enjoyed hunting, perhaps that was how he earn his special skill.

Now he was just few steps behind Huang Wen, like a tiger who crouched to pound its prey, he prepared himself to strike Huang Wen. Yan Chou and Jian Bao watched the battle from afar though the binocular. They still couldn't find that man anywhere in the battle field.

"Focused on area near Leader Huang.", said Jian Bao to Yan Chou who was using the binocular.

"Particularly somewhere behind him, or any place that was his blind spot.", he added.

Yan Chou nodded, now Huang Wen's fate might rest on their ability to spot the hidden hunter among the zombies.
