Chapter 1: The Beginning of Kali Yuga.
Three young men were sitting on the roadside, eating Chinese pork buns while watching the scenery in front of them. Girls from Fuzhou University girls dormitory were passing by them.
Those three were students who lived in Fuzhou University boys dormitory. Today was Sunday and many other residences of the boy dormitory, were having fun, but these three were rather spend their time sitting on the roadside to watch the girls.
Wherever you go, people always grouped based on their position on the social ladder. These three could be considered on the lowest level of that ladder.
Huang Wen, Ding Yun and Cao Bao. They all came from small village and it was their first time to live away from their family. It was also their first time to live in a big city. They didn't have any special trait that made them noticeable but probably their biggest mistake was their lack of self esteem. They didn't realize it, but actually it was their own behavior that prevented them from integrating with the other students.
Huang Wen sighed, "I'm bored. I'm going to sleep now. Aren't you guys have anything better than this?"
"Nah... I'm still waiting for my goddess. Chi Yang used to pick her around this time.", said Ding Yun.
"Bro... Do you want to get a beating from Chi Yang?", Huang Wen rolled his eyes.
"He he he... c'mon, I'm just looking at her.", said Ding Yun.
"Last time you stared so hard that he almost went to you. You're lucky Wang Mei stopped him. I think he was ready to give you some lesson by that time.", Huang Wen retorted.
"Aw... isn't she nice? Anyway, if that ever happens, you guys going to help me right?", said Ding Yun.
"Not a chance!", Huang Wen and Cao Bao shouted at the same time.
"What kind of bros you are?", Ding Yun lamented.
“Anyway, even if she isn't here right now, isn't this just heaven? Girls from big city sure are different.”, said Ding Yun again.
This time Cao Bao agreed with him, “You're right... ah rather than Wang Mei, I prefer Yu Lan, her curvy body... arghh.... I would give up my life to be her boyfriend...if only I could... argghh....!”
Some girls turned to look at them, due to Cao Bao. He cried while his hand, made a suggesting gesture.
Almost at the same time Ding Yun and Huang Wen rapped his head, “Shut up!!”
Huang Wen got up, "Whatever. Okay bye guys."
"Are you really leaving?",Cao Bao asked him.
"Yea... I got up very early today. Now I want some sleep.", Huang Wen answered.
"Okay, see you later... By the way, I need your physics notes, I missed the class last time.", said Cao Bao.
"Sure, just dropped by when you come back.", said Huang Wen as he walked away and waved his hand.
Huang Wen didn't have many friends in the first place. He barely accepted into the university after his parent loaned a large sum of money from their relatives. Since his early childhood, he always had this low self esteem. In his mind every other student always seemed richer or smarter or better looking, etc. He was diligent and got good grades ever since elementary, but that's all. He didn't have many other qualities. He might be handsome, but he didn't have any sense of fashion. With his awful hairdo and his poor dress, in term of physical attractiveness, from 0 - 10, one would give him around 5 to 6.
Cao Bao and Ding Yun probably his closest friends at his new school. Both of them were just as miserable as him. Pretty good with their head, but zero social ability.
Huang Wen threw himself onto his bed and closed his eyes. It wasn't that he needed some sleep, but rather the girl he secretly admire just passed them by as she went out of the dormitory. She won't be there until much later.
He began to visualize her in his mind. He thought about her eyes, the features of her face, her lips and kept on thinking about her. It didn't take long before part of his body reacting. With murky mind, Huang Wen got up and picked one of his roommate's pillow. That was Jiang Wu's pillow, he was well groomed and always knew how to get a girl.
Huang Wen rather envious about his good luck with girls.
With the spirit of petty vengeance, he went to lock the door into the room. It shouldn't be a problem, no one would return for hours. He got a box of tissue and with his 'girl' in his fantasy, he began to hump on Jiang Wu's pillow.
He was getting at the good part when he suddenly heard this jolly voice reverberating inside his head. It was cheerful, but there was something creepy about it. It felt like under that friendly tone there was cynical and malicious intent.
“Okay boys and girls, lets see the calendar. Oh ho ho... Look, its time for my show. Yes we finally reach the most exciting part of this long boring cycle but don't worry, you ole man here always thinks something new. Unlike the other boring dude, I always came up with something new each time my turn arrived. Let me introduce something new to your life, something that will make it more interesting. You watched it on TV, read it on comic book and play games about it. Now I will give you a chance to live with it.”
"... how come not even one soul say thank you? It's a present. No?"
"Confused? Tsk...tsk... tsk... you better get your head works fast dudes..."
A sinister laugh followed it.
"Well, I don't want to see too many of you died, so let me explain a bit. Some will die, that's unavoidable, but please try to survive okay? Now for our little explanation. Guys ... girls ... this is just the prelude for the last period of the never-ending cycle, or some of you call it Kali Yuga and I'm the one who is in charge, for this period. In order to make things progress a bit faster, I decide to introduce something new. Let's be honest, we all tired of this old and boring established order. Let's shake things a bit."
"Now gets yourself up. Grips hard that staff and be ready."
“My staff...? Uh... you mean this staff...”, for a moment, Huang Wen confused the staff in his hand and another staff he used to grip in a completely different situation.
It was really weird, he couldn't say for sure, but he didn't think he heard that voice using his hearing. Rather, it suddenly appeared within his mind and as the sound appeared, everything in space was frozen, even time was frozen. Nothing existed, but the sound. He unconsciously got up and somehow a staff was in his hand and he gripped it hard.
"4…"
"3…"
"2..."
"1…and we officially enter Kali Yuga, now struggle to survive!"
Huang Wen couldn't help, but trembled as he felt the dark, putrid feeling that speak in his mind, just left.
"What in the world just happened?"
He could feel his heart pumping faster than usual. Whatever just happened a moment ago, it was too weird and at the same time, too real to be called an illusion. He stared at the meter long stick in his hand, which appeared out of nowhere. Another proof that it was far from a mere hallucination.
Suddenly his heart filled with a dreadful feeling out of nowhere. Or probably it was the most rational reaction after that strange announcement.
"Struggle to survive?", Huang Wen silently repeated the information.
Last time he took an IQ test, it said he had a 139 IQ. But now, his brain sluggishly tried to churn this new information. It was just too other worldly to accept, but the wooden staff in his hand, insisted to stay in his hand. He wished the staff would disappear or suddenly turned into something else, then he would decide that it was just a dream.
No, the staff stubbornly stayed in his hand.
"Struggle ... only by becoming stronger I will be able to survive ... otherwise ... it's death...", Huang Wen was mumbling those few words.
As soon as he said it, he clenched his jaw and decided that this was reality. It was not some sort of dream or hallucination. Even if it was one, he shouldn't treat it as one. His eyes filled with determination. He held the staff with two hands. He held it like one would hold a two-handed sword.
He was standing in a fighting stance, with a knee a bit bent and his leg opened a shoulder wide, prepared for any sudden attack. Seconds passed by without anything happened and for a moment he felt how silly he was.
Suddenly another information flowed into his mind. This time the voice was different. It similar to generic female voice, used in answering machine or other similar applications.
"Huang Wen: Male"
"Level: 1 (0/5)″
"Class: None"
"Title: None"
"Strength: 6 (6)
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Agility: 5 (5)
Vitality: 11(11)
Stamina: 11/11
Spirit: 15/15
Health: 11/11"
"Skills : None."
"Equipment : Wood Staff."
His mind absorbed the information line by line. Every time, he focused on certain word, a more detailed information would appear.
In example when he focused on Wood Staff, a new information was appeared into his mind.
"Wood Staff is the basic weapon for everyone, loved by all. Deadly weapon in the hand of a master. Safe weapon without any sharp edges that could hurt themselves in the hand of a beginner."
"Attak power : 5. Durability : 10"
Huang Wen's mind was alerted. Strange info like these flowed directly into his head. Nobody at his age didn't have any experience with the game world. Most boys would at least understand the basic knowledge of RPG. All those new information certainly fitted with one.
Level, Class, Title and all those basic stat for a character in an RPG game. This new world was too bizarre and the first thing he wanted to make sure, was that he won't be caught unguarded. The door was locked but he wasn't satisfied with just locking the door. He ran to push one of the metal framed bed to barricade the locked door. He didn't really care if one of his roommates suddenly decided to return and found it weird.
The words "struggle", "survive" and "death", were whirling inside his head. He stared at the flimsy bed frame that blocked the door. It wasn't actually flimsy, but in his mind there were huge monsters out there and yes, suddenly, it looked flimsy. He decided that he needed more.
After barricading the door with two more beds, he felt a bit calmed. His room was located on the 3rd floor, so the only to get into the room is through the door. With the door locked and barricaded, somewhat he felt safe, at least for now.
He took long and deep breath, while focused on his hearing. There was no sound from behind the door. After a while, he could hear someone was screaming from outside the dormitory.
He ran quickly toward the window and looked outside.
"What's that?", he wondered.
It was coming from the front yard of the girl's dormitory. Three girls were running and behind them there was seven or so other girl, who was following them, walking stiffly and in awkward way. The way they moved reminded him of something.
"Zombies?", he raised his eyebrows.
"The old version of Zombies?", he couldn't hide his disgust.
Huang Wen snickered. He remembered the movie, "Shaun of the Dead".
He thought, 'Gave me all those zombies any day. Whatever happen there, I could take on any zombies if they moved that slow.'
But one of the girls tripped on something and the next scene wiped out any funny ideas in his head.
She fell and soon one of the zombies reached her. She was fast enough to kick it in the face, but it didn't even flinch. With the help of her friends, she struggled to get up, but more zombies catch up with her. Her friends began to give up and ran. The next thing he saw was just bunch of zombies crouching on the ground and the shrilling scream of a girl in extreme pain.
He felt cold sweat drenched his back. They might be slow, but they have numbers and endurance. Fortunately, it seemed that once they had something to eat, which was some fresh meat, they didn't chase for more.
He kept watching as if glued on the window. What surprised him, was one of the girls suddenly moved sluggishly. Her friend turned and it seemed she was trying to help.
Even before it happened Huang Wen screamed inside his mind, "No you fool !!! She must be infected !!!"
Sure enough, now we got two new zombies.
He sighed, suddenly he remembered of Cao Bao and Ding Yun. The last time he saw them, they were hanging around the shop in front of the girl's dormitory. He squinted his eyes and tried to look for them and to his relief he could not see them there.
"I guess they're already leaving. I wonder where they are right now?", he talked to himself, but now wasn't the time to think about other people.
It won't be easy, but with that slow speed he still had the chance to survive. He was never excelled in sport, but he didn't drink alcohol or smoke neither. He had good stamina and endurance due to his eight km morning jog. Never missed a day. He kept it closed by heart that a poor man should never be sick. Since medication costed you lots of money. So he did all he could, to maintain his health.
He wasn't after strength or well sculpted body, but he made sure that he always in good condition. Enough exercise, eating healthy food and enough rest.
He didn't have confidence in his fighting skill in this new world, but with their slow movement, Huang Wen thought that he might have a chance if he acted carefully.
Suddenly, the sound of loud knocking came at the door.
“Crap! Zombies! Here they come!”
With horror on his face, he watched the door. He already stacked three metal framed bed, barricading the door. Even if the zombies broke down the door, it wouldn't be easy for them to enter the room. In his heart, he knew what he needed to do now, but his leg felt so heavy.
One step at a time, he moved toward the door, the staff raised high above his head, ready to strike the first zombie to enter the room.
It took few strikes and the thin wooden door shattered; two claws pierce through the door.
"Too strong!", he whispered in terror.
"I'm gonna die... oh no... I'm gonna die now...", he muttered in fear.
But then he shook his head in anger, "No way! I don't want to die a virgin! I'll survive through this. Get stronger and then get laid!"
His hand sweating, his heart racing, he wanted to run, but he knew that he had to hold his position. The minute more than one zombies entered the room, he is doomed to die. He gritted his teeth and prepared for the moment when that zombie showed its head. With a vicious cracking sound, the upper half of the door was smashed open. A head with a big hole and white eyes, protruded out of that smashed door. A short haired zombie that was a student had stuck his head in, constantly struggling toward Huang Wen.
Huang Wen recognized him. It was Cao Bao. Cao Bao and Ding Yun lived in the next two rooms on his left. It seemed they or maybe just Cao Bao, decided to return not long after he left. Since Cao Bao turned into zombie, there was a good chance that Ding Yun too. Many other facts about him passed through Huang Wen's mind in a torrent, but none of that memories stopped Huang Wen from swinging the staff as hard as he can.
"Sorry bro. I'm sorry. But you're a zombie now. So don't blame me.", frantically he struck and struck.
Each time the staff hit, it bounced up and Huang Wen used the momentum to lift it high in the air and then used his entire might to swing it down again.
Huang Wen vaguely realized when the zombie in front of him, Cao Bao, fell lifeless onto the floor. His head smashed into meat pulp.
"Ding! You got 1 Exp."
Huang Wen's eyes fell on Cao Bao's lifeless body. He kept looking at Cao Bao's smashed head. He could feel, the pork bun he ate a few hours ago, made its way up to his throat. He fought the urge to puke because he could see another zombie already on its way toward his room. After a while Cao Bao's body disappeared, dispersed into the air.
Somehow the similarities to computer game made him felt a bit better, and the immediate danger who was now walking toward him, pulled his mind away from the thought of Cao Bao.
Huang Wen did a quick calculation while striking the next zombie who tried to enter his room.
On this floor, there were 40 rooms, 20 rooms on the west side and 20 on the east side. Each side consisted of 10 big rooms facing north and south. There were six boys in each room. In the middle was the common room, where the stairs leading to the other floor exist. So there were around 240 boys in each floor, five floors in totals. The last time he knew, there were almost 1000 boys living in this dormitory, but since today was Sunday, more than half would be out there.
At least there would be around 400 zombies in this dormitory and probably there were more zombies from outside would go to the dormitory.
For now there was nothing he could do, but gritted his teeth and fought. Huang Wen believed that some of his neighbors would survive the initial shock, which means the zombies would not concentrate on him. Later he might be able to group with other survivors.
He better focused his mind and effort to survive first.
