The little demon turned out to be a chatty one. Apparently they didn't have many clues about the past, about the reason why the world split into two realms. There were many myths and legends to explain it in their world as much as it was in this world.
For centuries the demons began to believe that the world of human was nothing but nonsense. The incident that happened a few days ago was a surprised for most of them as much as it shocked humanity.
These little demons found the essence they needed to survive was thin in this world, slowly they grew weak and within months they might perished. If bigger demons entered this world, they almost certainly perished within a few minutes for the higher their level was, the greater they needed that essence to survive. Fortunately (for the demons) little demons didn't need much and based on what they remembered from the myth. The little demons began to feast on the human soul and found that the human soul had that essence. It even in a more concentrated form than the air in their own realm. It could be said as plants turned various substances into food for animals. Human turned various substances into food for these demons.
The little demons grew stronger as they ate more souls. Even their physical grew stronger and getting solidified.
As their victim turned into zombies, the little demons placed some sort of spiritual link in it, it was through that link the zombies became their hands and feet. When the zombies attacked other human, they helped the demons to consume more souls.
Killing the little demons won't turn the zombies back to human, since they already lost a part of their soul that made them human. However, since there was no demon who was linked to them, they won't infect other humans. At least until another demon placed that link to them, which then at that point the zombies will turn into that demon's hands and feet.
The demons could also sense that there were people like Huang Wen, whose souls was strengthened and enriched as they killed the zombies.
It made them grew wary. Many of them would run away as soon as they saw such human but there were some who couldn't help but tempted to feast on their soul. This little demon was one of them.
"Now would you let me live?", the little demon ended its long chatter and asked in fear.
Huang Wen closed his eyes, "... no... it's not good enough."
The little demon began to curse and swear at Huang Wen, but when Huang Wen's katana moved toward its neck, it quickly spoke, "Wait! There was a place in this city that we couldn't enter!"
Huang Wen's katana stopped in its track and he said, "Speak..."
The little demon could feel Huang Wen's excitement within that one word and with much hope, it explained, "There is some sort of gate within the city that leads to another place. There is some sort of barrier that prevents us from entering it. None of us could enter this place, neither zombies who are linked to us, but the way we sense it, we believe a human can."
"Where is this place?", Huang Wen asked.
"Right in the center of this city.", said the little demon.
"Good.... that's what I call important information.", said Huang Wen.
"Yes great master... this servant of yours knew important information. So would the great master let him live?", the little demon asked politely.
"Are you sure you don't have more information?", Huang Wen asked.
"Not at this time, o great master but let me live and I'll work for you. I'll search more information for you.", the little demon pleaded, it could see that the last information he gave to Huang Wen greatly moved him.
In fact, the little demon told him that information unwillingly. After all, if many people moved into such location, it will be hard for them to hunt.
"... but you held information from me many times before...", Huang Wen spoke.
"...no... no... master o great master, this time your lowly servant truly held nothing from you...", the little demon quickly pleaded in panic.
Huang Wen threateningly pressed his katana on its neck again and the little demon began to plead and flatter even more. After a while Huang Wen decided that the little demon really didn't have more information to give.
"... it seems that this time you tell me the truth...", said Huang Wen.
"Of course Master... this lowly servant of yours would not dare to hide anything from you, O wise great master.", said the little demon.
Huang Wen sighed, in his heart he began to pity this little demon. He was never a cruel person and it was against his conscience to bully someone that much weaker than him but how could he let this little demon free? Besides he knew he couldn't trust everything it said. According to the little demon, killing it wouldn't turn the zombies back to human, but who knows? Maybe it lied to save his life.
"Little demon... sorry...", said Huang Wen as he moved his katana to lope the little demon's head off.
The little demon started to scream and curse but it was shortly cut as the katana easily sliced its neck cleanly. Its body began to wither and within seconds disappeared in the air. At the same time, Huang Wen could feel power rushed into his body.
"Ding !!! You got 100 experience points!"
"You're promoted to level 11 and get two points to spend on your stat. Which stat you want to spend it on?"
As usual he invested it in his agility and he focused his mind to check on his current stat.
"Huang Wen: Male"
"Level: 11 (17/86)″
"Class: None"
"Title: None"
"Strength: 6 (6)
Agility: 22 (22)
Vitality: 11(11)
Stamina: 10/14 (14)
Spirit: 15/15 (15)
Health: 11/11 (11)"
"Skills : None."
"Equipment : Generic Katana."
Perhaps because that little demon consumed hundreds or maybe even thousands soul, killing it, actually gave so much experience.
Huang Wen quickly scanned the room and made sure that there were no other little demons within that room. Likely that previous little demon was the one who responsible for turning students in Fuzhou University boys dormitory into zombies. He closed the window before dropped his body on the floor and lay there, not moving even a bit for a long time. When he thought all the new information and speculated all the possibilities, suddenly he felt so tired and wanted to sleep.
He lay on the floor and closed his eyes. When Huang Wen finally slept, he slept like a dead man. He found so many things today, it was true that he didn't find more skill books but that little demon and the information he got from the little demon worth many times more.
Huang Wen woke up groggily, he barely slept an hour. His sleep filled with nightmares of demons big and small, weird demons and zombies. He wanted to sleep a bit longer but couldn't. His mind was running wildly, speculating his future. He tried to close his eyes and stayed still, but it wasn't working.
"Gah... I believed I killed at least two hundred? Or is it three hundred zombies? ... and looks what I got? A katana and one weird little demon that kept haunting me even after I killed it.", Huang Wen groaned and forced himself to get up.
If he couldn't sleep, then it was better to kill some zombies. Previously he planned to make the boys dormitory as his castle, his home, the place where he would launch his attack and retreated. Now, he decided to explore the city and find that place where he will be able to sleep in peace, as soon as possible.
"I'm just lucky... If I happen to meet that little demon before I'm ready, right now I would be one of its zombie. I must keep my senses sharp and my third eye opened...", Huang Wen thought to himself.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"Its better if I can find that place... since they can't enter it, probably the zombies who have part of them within it, can't enter it too. It could be the only safe place."
"But let pass today here. In here, at least I'm familiar with the layout and have a safe place. Tomorrow, when I have fireball in my sleeve, I'll start searching for that place. This skill isn't that bad, it was just too limited for now...", after some thought Huang Wen made a decision.
He watched the street from the window and thought about his parents.
", hahhh ... I've been a bad son... I don't even think about my parent at all in the past few days.", Huang Wen sighed and felt guilty.
"But what's my option? Of course, I should go and see if they're fine but in this situation..."
For a time, Huang Wen's heart and mind were in turmoil. He closed his eyes and bit his lips.
"Hahh...! I guess after all, I'm a bad son. Perhaps I have the strength to leave this city and went to check on my parent but I can't.", Huang Wen smiled bitterly.
"It's... it's too frightening...", he thought to himself.
He could make up many believable and realistic reason that would explain both to himself and to other, why he couldn't make the journey to home now. After all, it was literally hell out there.
"No, it would be a lie to say I don't have the power. I have it. Probably more than most people out there... But... I'm too coward to take the risk.", Huang Wen said in self mocking way.
It wasn't honest as well, the truth if he knew his parent were in danger and it was within his reach to save them, he would. The situation right now was too severe, not only the journey back to his home would be a dangerous journey that would easily kill him. There was no guarantee that his parent still in their home or even alive. The risk was extremely high and the chance of it being fruitful was small. Eight out of ten, or even nine out of ten, if he made that journey then he would die. If he made it to reach his home, then most certainly his parent won't be there.
If they managed to survive the first wave, then by the time Huang Wen reached his home town, most likely his parents already joined a group of survivors and their chance to survive in this new era was high. If that was the case, then spending a few weeks or months to level up, wouldn't make much difference.
If they didn't then most likely, whether Huang Wen made the trip back home today, or couple of months later, it will made no different.
He still could not believe it that within three days, he transformed from normal civilians, into a killing machine. His skill with swords, his speed and agility, the small fireball spell; he gained it all within three days. Despite the fact that now it was getting harder to gain even one level, the progress itself was still something that seems against any logical explanation. He didn't want to risk his life. He had a glimpse of what he could be, if he kept on leveling up.
"I couldn't afford it to take it easy now. I must focus on leveling up and moved toward the central of Fuzhou where the entrance to that safe place existed.", he already made up his mind.
As his mind and his eyes drifted from one place to another, he happened to see the girls dormitory.
"But before that... why don't we check on the girls dormitory there?", Huang Wen stared at the building.
Something stirred within his heart, after all that building had become a symbol of something in the past few months he, Cao Bao and Ding Yun spent here in Fuzhou. That's the place, in that place there were the girls, the girls they wanted to date but couldn't. They could only fantasize about dating with one of them.
"Who knows maybe I could find another little demons like that.", his heart desired something but his mind purposely tried to come up with another reason to give a visit to the girl's dormitory.
"They're not that tough. The only problem is that we can't see them with our eyes but I can use my spiritual eye to actually see them. Also even without using that skill, as long as I keep my senses sharp, I can feel their presence. If I could find more little demons I could cross check those information and as a bonus I could get hundreds of experience points.", the more he thought about it, the more interesting that plan was.
As he thought about that plan, something aroused within him. His face reddened, something below reacted toward the passing thought.
"Damn! Never knew I was this kind of guy...", Huang Wen cursed himself, he couldn't lie to himself.
He secretly thought of those apocalyptic novels. It seemed in those novels, the main character always got his hands on the most beautiful female characters in the story. There was even one, where the main character had his pretty neighbor turn into zombie and spent his first few days, literally had sex with her.
"Hmm... with the lack of rules and law. Is it how the collapse of our society affects us?", he sighed.
Who would criticized him, if he did that now? Most of the time, it was the fear of how other people judge him that stopped him from doing any out of the norm behavior. Now with no one around to judge him, what would stop him from capturing a female zombie and did that?
Suddenly Huang Wen felt his heart raced. He was confronted by another side of him. Of course he faced it many times in his life, but never he was confronted by it with such strength. In the past, there were the rules, there was law enforcement, there was other people's opinion. It helped him to choose the "right" path.
Now, it was all gone. The only thing that was left was the survival of the fittest.
For the first time in his life, he saw his most base desire raged in full power, without any external power to put a leash on it. It was only a passing idea, but that idea triggered something that now like a tsunami crashing on his consciousness. Back then he already realized how the new world will affect the society. He worked hard to grow stronger, driven by his fear of his past experience, being a victim of bullying.
Now, when Huang Wen began to feel secure and confident in his own strength. Suddenly he realized, the power to defend his own right, he can be used to fulfill all of his desire.
"No wonder people say that power tends to corrupt and absolute power, absolutely corrupt...", Huang Wen closed his eyes and calmed his breathing.
"What is right? What is wrong...? When you have the power to back you up, aren't you the one who decided right or wrong? No wonder many idealist activist would turn into a corrupt official when they gain power within the government...", he asked himself.
"Hahh.... even if I gain supra natural power, other might be as well... to think that now I have the power to do anything I want to do is a foolish illusion...", he reprimanded himself.
After a time his heart calmed, "Hmm... it is still the fear of punishment that rein over my desire."
"But when my power grew.... what would I be? When other gain such power, what kind of person they would be?"
...
"Truly... This is the world could turn even a good man into a demon...", Huang Wen sighed again.
"So... should I check on the girls dormitory?", Huang Wen peeked again toward the building across the street.
"Definitely... I need to find those little demons."
"About the girls... most likely they all turned into zombies by now."
Pervert thoughts and ideas passed his mind. Quickly he shook his head.
"For now, let's hunt some zombies. I think I could break through one more level before I have to sleep.", he decided.
