Kyle felt like he woke up 2 years after arriving in the blank space, and when he looked around him, it looked like a hospital room from a big city.
"Um, hello?" Kyle had enough of the blank space. Right now, he was glad to be in a real place.
"Hello?" A woman in white robs walked over to Kyle and looked at his face. She blinked a few times but did nothing else.
"Yeah, can you tell me what day it is?" Kyle had been in the black room for 2 years. He just wanted to make sure 20 years had not past.
"It's January 17th. 3009." The nurse was not quite sure what to do. The boy in the bed had been there for 4 and a half months, but nobody expected him to wake up. It was a mystery why Marvin Akira wanted him to be kept around.
"3009?" Kyle was stunned. Not only had it not been something crazy like 20 years passing on the outside, it had been less time than he was in the void.
"Right. We are not sure how you did it, but you are alive." The nurse was not an optimistic person. Nobody thought Kyle was going to live even a week, but he did. Nobody thought he would live without food or water, but he did. Kyle was in zero upkeep mode for the last 4.5 months.
"But it's January?" Kyle was in a tough situation. Mana could not be felt, it was just known when you had none left. Secondly, the abiit form was not a spell, so it should not have used mana.
"That's right. January 17th."
"So, can I leave?" Kyle felt more or less fine. It probably would not be the case when he stood up, but that was not a problem for healing magic.
"I'd like you to stay here for the rest of the day to see if anything happens. Your mother came by and told me this sometimes happens, but I would just like to make sure." The nurse was an average woman. Her saying 'You naughty boy, you need to stay in bed, all, day, long.' was not exciting Kyle very much in the least.
"So I can leave tomorrow?" Kyle was fine if he just had to spend one more day in the bed. He could see Beth the next day, and do whatever else he needed to.
"You can leave tomorrow. I'll get someone to make a list of your classes and the rooms. I just need to check somethings on you if that is fine." The nurse walked to the side of the bed that Kyle was in and waited.
"Yeah, sure." Kyle mentally prepared himself for the hot nurse archetype, even if the nurse wasn't so hot.
----------------------------------------
"Kyle wake up!" Someone was furiously shaking Kyle, and he did not like it. He was only gone for 4.5 months in the real world, but to him it was 2 years. Fate could've at least had a hot girl wake him up.
"Wake up you idiot." Beth was in the room, but she was a little further than whomever was shaking Kyle currently. Kyle opened his eyes and looked at an unfamiliar black haired girl.
"Hey, i'm up, stop shaking me." Kyle said this and then the shaking stopped. Kyle rubbed his eyes and tried to think of who the person was...
"Kyle, who is Florianne?" Beth asked from the foot of the bed. Florianne was the one who was shaking Kyle, and she stood to the left of Kyle.
"Florianne..." Kyle could remember a little about her. Was friends with Micky and Jocelyn, healing type. He had only known her for 2 days, and then he was gone for 2 years. If she was a monster that could eat him if he slipped up for a second, Kyle would have remembered everything about her in a second, but she wasn't. She was just a girl.
"You don't have to lie about being sickly Kyle. Some people just can't do as much as others." Florianne thought Kyle had some kind of disease that after walking around the whole day had got him.
"Hey I'm fine. What happened while I was under?" Kyle was not sickly. He didn't like people thinking that he was sickly. He didn't like people calling him 'cutie' either, but he could live with that. Kyle now wanted to know what events happened in the last 4.5 months.
"Well, I had a special friend for a little while, but he wasn't really anything important." Florianne started speaking about her personal life, but Kyle wanted to know more than just about her.
"I mean with the school, or outside of it. Has any event that I need to know about happened?" 4.5 months was a long time. Kyle wanted to know if certain things happened.
"Nothing important happened while you slept." Beth was able to give a clear answer for Kyle.
"Do you two not have classes?" Kyle was wondering what day of the week it was for the two girls to be in his hospital room.
"We have class, but they are not far from here, so we came to check on you." Florianne shot a glance at Beth and then looked back to Kyle.
"When is your next class at?" Kyle was not sure about how the class schedule worked, so he asked.
"We are in Ethics class right now." Florianne took a few steps and looked at Beth and then back to Kyle.
"You girls should go back to class soon. Kyle will go to class once he fully wakes up." Kyle looked around and saw the nurse sitting in a chair across the room.
"Alright, but I will take you to healing next period." Florianne made her way to the door and exited. Now it was just Kyle Beth and the Nurse.
"You should go too." The nurse said while looking at Beth.
"It's okay Beth, I found a way." Kyle tried to smile as Beth walked out of the room and took a few looks back. Kyle had indeed made the abiit form for Beth, but he had not used it in so long. He was confident in being able to do it again.
"I'll see you later." Beth closed the door behind her and now it was just Kyle and the nurse.
"Your mother picked up your stuff a few months ago. But we still have a school robe for you, and a couple personal items she left behind." The nurse went to a cabinet on the left wall beside Kyle and pulled out a blue robe. She also pulled out the ribbon Kyle was given on the first day. Kyle could see a stack of paper and ink inside the cabinet, and wondered if the red string was still there.
A few minutes later, Kyle put on his old set of clothes that were in a different cabinet, and then pulled the robe over them. It was an alright fit, but a little small. Kyle looked inside the cabinet and also found the red string, so he wore that too.

----------------------------------------
A little over an hour later, Florianne came to take Kyle to healing class.
"Oh good, you got a robe. They didn't get us our robes for at least a week." Kyle walked besides Florianne who was also in the same blue robe. There was no difference between the boys and girl's robes, except the way she wore her's.
"It looks like my mom took all my stuff home, so these are the only clothes I have." Kyle really only did have these. After a week in bed, his stuff was taken from the dorms and moved into the medical ward that Kyle was staying in.
"Oh, that's um... At least you'll have lots of practice doing laundry." Florianne tried to make the best out of it and they got to the healing classroom quickly. It was in the same building, and when they entered the room, only a few desk had been filled.
"There is a 30 minute break time for mana to recharge between classes. You can really do whatever you want during that time." Florianne took a seat near the back, so Kyle took the seat next to her.
"Is it far from Ethics to here?" Kyle had forgotten the locations of the buildings of each class, but it would not take more than a couple minutes to walk from one to the other.
"It's not far. I can get here in a couple minutes if I hurry, but Micky and Jocelyn like to hang out for a little bit after class." Florianne relaxed in her chair, and Kyle tried to do the same. He was a little achy from laying in bed for 4.5 months.
"Hey Florianne, who is that guy?" Someone walked in the room and sat down on the other side of Florianne. He had short blond hair and blue eyes. A pretty boy.
"This is Kyle, the one who was sick for a while and could not attend." Florianne could not lean back any further in her seat, but still pointed at Kyle. Kyle leaned forward.
"Hey." And then Kyle leaned back down.
"Alban Lavone. Fire Ice Ground Healing." The pretty boy on the other side of Florianne introduced himself and stated his types. Alban did not know, however, that Kyle was a full-types mage.
"Kyle Mercer. Fire Ice Ground Wind Lightning Healing." Kyle leaned forward again to speak, but he did not pretend to be friendly. Alban was clearly challenging him.
"I don't believe that you are full-type." Alban was skeptical.
"Well he-" Florianne was cut off.
"I don't care what you believe." Kyle turned to look at Alban without moving his body. Kyle had interrupted Florianne speaking, but she seemed fine with it.
"You..." Alban's intestines turned green and his face became very ugly. Kyle truly was 'The smaller fish has the shinier scales'.
They sat in silence for a while and then the professor came in.
"Good morning class." It was a woman, probably in her 30's.
"That is professor Riz." Florianne whispered as she leaned over to Kyle.
"It looks like we have a new student." Riz said while looking at Kyle.
"The new face in the back is Kyle, who due to a mysterious illness has not been with us until now. Please try to make him feel welcomed." Riz held out her hand to where Kyle was and then turned to the board.
"Today we will continue to practice the Heal spell, and once again here is the chant." Riz wrote the chant for the spell on the board. It was a long chant, about 30 words.
"Just try to observe the other students Kyle and try to get a feel for what they are doing."
Everyone in the classroom went to a cabinet and took from it a little box. The box was black and had each student's name on it. Kyle looked at the box Florianne brought back, and inside of it was a little monster. The monster was dead, and one of the strange quirks of healing magic was that the target did not actually have to be living for it to work. Dead creatures could be put back together with the spell [Regrow], but it would not make them come back to life.
"So Kyle, healing is really simple." Florianne started to explain to Kyle as she took a knife and made a cut along the side of the monster's belly.
"You just need to say the chant like any other spell and vision yourself putting a bunch of tubes together as you push the skin together." Florianne put her hands on the monster skin and started to say the chant.
"[Heal]" The skin closed back up. It was not pretty, and a scar was there, but it worked.
"It's okay to be a little squeamish on the first try. Alban barfed when he did it the first time."
"Hey shut up!" Alban was upset at Florianne saying such things. It was embarrassing for the new kid to show him up, but how Florianne was broadcasting he vomited when he tried to heal the deal monster.
"I think I can get it Florianne. [Heal]" Kyle cut the monster open again and chanted the spell. It worked wonderfully and the scar was even gone.
"Wow Kyle, that was really good, and you didn't even have to read the chant from the board." Florianne was impressed.
"Yeah, I tried to memorize as many spells as I could before coming here." Kyle lied, but anyone would believe him.
"Oh really? That's impressive." Florianne looked down at the monster corpse and cut it again. Florianne cast heal on the corpse another 6 times before she was out of mana.
"Erg, can you still go Kyle?" Florianne was holding her head as she asked Kyle. Mana exhaustion came suddenly in the form of headaches, at least for normal people. In Kyle's case, it would been being unconscious for a period of time 7 times longer than the last while his soul was moved into Nirvana or Oblivion.
"I think I can one more time. [Heal]. Ooh yeah here it is." Kyle put his hand up to his head too as he faked a headache. He was able to cast [Heal] dozens of times in his past life before having to recharge, and in this one it would be a huge amount. Kyle did not understand how he kept running out of mana when his mana pool was much larger than before.
The class finished soon, and Alban only bragged a few times about being able to cast [Heal] 9 times. Alban was the only other boy in the room other than Kyle, and he must have gotten full of himself. Male Healing mages were the rarest, but it was more common than the ratio in the classroom.
